Databse Restore is very slow

Hi,
I was trying to restore the database which usually took 50 minitues maximum, but since last couple of days it is taking more than 2 hours
In Activity monitor I see BACKUPTHREAD & BACKUPIO with status as suspended.  In locks by object area of activity monitor, I see sew lines on tempdb database with subtype as DATA_SPACE, INDEXSTATS, request mode Sch-S & Sch-M
SQL Server Logs show "cachestore flush for 'Bound Trees', 'Sql Plans' and 'Object Plans'... lines when restore process started.
Can anyone explain the reason ,solution and where i can more information about it ?
Thanks in Advance.

Hello,
Keerthi is correct, backups and restores are EXTREMELY IO intensive which is why you see BACKUPTHREAD and BACKUPIO waits. SQL Server is telling you it's waiting on your IO subsystem. Here you don't really have a choice... either get more/faster disks or
use multiple backup files and backup/restore to them (called backup striping) which either way you'll need more physical disks to do.
For other intangibles, when restoring a database there are 4 phases.
1. Create files if they don't exist or REPLACE isn't used on an existing database. The only thing to speed this up is to, as Keerthi has said, give your service account perform volume maintenance tasks. Note that this will not change the performance of the
log part as the file will still need zeroed out if it's created and not re-used.
2. Copy data from the backup file to the destination. To speed this up, have multiple fast disks/luns/etc that the backup is taken to and have the same for where it needs to be restored. SQL Server creates one reader/writer thread per volume/mount point
which is why this CAN, if there is no IO bottleneck, speed  up backups and restores. When this phase is complete, SQL Server responds that the restore is 100% complete which is technically not true.
3. REDO. This is where crash recovery comes into play. Redo replays any logs that need to be applied. The only thing that can speed this part of the restore up is to have as little data in the log file that needs to be replayed as possible and not have many
vlfs.
4. UNDO. This is the last part of crash recovery. Once Redo is finished, anything that wasn't committed or is in an inconsistent state will need to be rolledback. The only thing that can speed this part up is switching to Enterprise edition which has fast
recovery (it still does undo but uses locks and opens the database) OR have as little transactions that need to be rolled back as possible (i.e. not taking a backup in the middle of a bulk load) and not having too many vlfs.
After UNDO completes (again, unless using enterprise edition), the database will finally be open and available for use.

  • Disk Utility Restore function very slow

    Hi,
I'm using Disk Utility to migrate my Time Machine backup from a USB 2.0 Western Digital My Book 2TB drive (1 TB RAID 1 configuration) to a 1.5 TB Seagate drive in a miniStack (FireWire 800). The WD drive is connected through the USB hub in my old Cinema Display and the mini is connected directly to my Mac mini. I have about 320 GB of data on the WD drive.
I started the Restore procedure in Disk Utility a couple of days ago, and as of now, I still have 5 days and 20 hours left before this finishes--according to DIsk Utility's estimate. Is this normal???? The progress bar is moving as expected, but it's just very very slow. I also noticed when I run Disk Warrior on the WD drive that it can take a few hours to do the analysis and then another few hours to copy the new directory onto the WD drive. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

Copying TM backups is slow, but that's just ridiculous!
I'd be very suspicious of the WD drive or something, somewhere in the connections to it.
I'd be inclined to just start TM fresh on the new drive. Keep the old one "on the shelf" for a while until you're sure you don't need anything from those backups. You can always browse and restore from the old backups via the +*Browse ...+* option, per #17 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.

  • Need help restoring a very slow MBP ... no OS Disc

I have been asked by a colleague to 'sort out' her MacBook Pro.
It has been running increasingly slow and often becomes non-responsive.
Now it is not letting me log into the normal (not administrator) account - accepts password and takes me back to login.
The administrator account wich does not get used has no problem logging in - but is equally as slow.
She doesn't have/can't find the OS discs to reinstall.
Also, when plugging in an ext. HD, Time Machine does not recognise it as an available device... is it safe to manually move files onto the HD?
Someone has suggested creating a new user account, moving files over, deleting old account.
Will this have any impact on the slow running of the MBP in general?
    About This Mac:
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.6.8
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 6GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
I have been waiting for 'Opening System Profiler' to load assuming it will display more information but I have been waiting for 20 mins now.
    Please Help!
(I'm relatively new to Mac products, used Windows for years!)

You only have 2GB of RAM, which is not enough to run OS X 10.10 smoothly (it's the bare minimum requirement to run it at all). Consider buying more at http://eshop.macsales.com (there are other vendors as well). Find the correct RAM for your model by searching for your iMac's model identifier - iMac8,1. Also look at their installation videos.
You have several failed Apple launch agents, you may need to re-install OS X to fix that. Boot the computer while holding down the Command ⌘ and R keys at the same time. This will boot to the Recovery partition. Choose the reinstall OS X option.

Ipod classic 160GB very slow sync and cannot connect to itunes store windows 7 ansd itunes 10.6.0.40. I have now been trying for 3 weeks to restore my iPod. Really frustrated, any ideas would be welcome.

Cured the problem! Reinstalled an earlier version of itunes from oldapps.com (version 10) now everything works as it should. I would suggest that if you are experiencing these problems that you do the same. I must say that it is a brave business decision on behalf of apple to effectively lock out all windows 7 users from their products and sales channels and I can only wish them luck in this very shortsighted policy.

Thank you very much for your reply gdgmacguy :) I did all you suggested apart from restore as new device . Didn't know I could do that . After restore I did restore from back up only,  as I didn't want to end up without contacts details on my phone. If I restore as new device how do I get my all contacts? Still will have to use back up? Sorry if it sounds like I don't know what i am doing, i just have no one to ask who would know. Thank you

  • My mac mini is running very slow all of a sudden, how can i restore it's speed?

my mac mini is running very slow all of a sudden, how can i restore it's speed?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Woke up today to new firefox update installed. Now Firefox VERY slow & all of my Bookmarks are gone as well as Bookmarks Toolbar empty. IE runs fast like usual, but Firefox barely loading.
Tried Restore from available dates, but all come back unable to process.

Some of you will want to shoot me; Mozilla may yank this reply. BUT I had the same problem for about a week, struggled in vain, poured over the help section and got 3 replies to my posted question. Nothing, absolutely nothing worked.
Want to know what solution I finally came up with? '''''CHROME.'''''
It imported my precious bookmarks from IE and FF. I'm going to uninstall IE now and leave FF as an emergency backup browser which I don't expect to need anymore.

  • Very slow restoring volume on MacBook Pro

I had my external USB 2.0 drive plugged in to the USB port on the right side of my MacBook Pro (1,1) and the estimated time for completion for a full Time Machine restore was about 25 hours. Needless to say I quit and shutdown my MacBook Pro, I plugged my external drive into a powered USB 2.0 hub and attached the hub to the USB port on the left side, rebooted and now the restore is going to take about 2 hours. That's way better...
I thought that both ports on the MacBook Pro where high-speed 2.0 ports. I guess not. From prior experience trying to sync my iPod with this MacBook Pro, I didn'ttry the left port by itself.
A couple of notes for those restoring on a MacBook Pro:
    - When it was restoring at the slow speed I first clicked the Stop button, it asked for confirmation, I said yes and then it disabled (grayed out) the Stop button, but the restore was still in progress. I waited a long time for it to gracefully stop, but it never did. Instead I Quit the Mac OS X Installer.
    - Before starting the restore again I used System Profiler in the Utilities menu of the Mac OS X Installer, to make sure that the drive was in fact connected to a high-speed USB 2.0 port. It was, so I used the Restore System From Backup command to start the restore.
I hope this is helpful to someone.

I find the volume to be very unsatisfactory, at least on my 13" Early 2011 model.  The sound is very weak (with the exception of when using quality headphones).

  • DB2 restore very slow

    Dear Experts,
We are setting up a DR server for the existing production server. The OS is Windows 2003 R2 SP 2. Database is "DB2 v8.1.12.99"
We have bought new HP hardware to setup the DR server. While restoring the database backup of Production server from filesystem (local) on the DR server the restore is extremely slow. Its about 1 GB per hour. I have checked whether the restore is running using the "db2 list utilities show detail" command and it shows the restore progress in bytes and it is definitely running. I have tried to restore on an IBM server with same configuration and the restore is complete in 4 hrs.
I cannot figure out what the problem is.. There are no errors in db2diag. I have the feeling if it is a hardware issue and the RAID 5 read / write cache has to be set??
Please advise if any DB2 parameters are to be changed and how to change those so that the restore is done normally.
    Thank you
