Dataguard Active/Active Vs Golden gate in 11i environment

is there any difference between setting up 11gR2 RAC + Dataguard in Active/Active mode Vs 11gR2 + DG + Golden Gate in 11i environment? Besides, are there any pros and cons in setting up one over another?
environment: RH5.x, 11gR2, 2-node RAC, 11.5.10.2

Data Guard with Physical Standby & Real-Time Query (Active Data Guard) is for Disaster Protection in the first place. Additionally, you can use the Standby for Reporting (Read-Only)
Golden Gate or Streams is for Replication in the first place. You could do much more than just read-only reports. You don't need to replicate everything. You could do Multimaster-Replication. Additionally, you get some protection against damage of the source database(s).
The question is: Do you want Disaster Protection or Replication as the most important Business Requirement.
Kind regards

  • Golden Gate functionality during new deployments

Hi can anybody tell me what can be done during deployment activity is performed for Active-Active(bi-directional) Golden Gate configuration?
In our case during new deployments we fail-over complete traffic from once Data centre to another active data centre.
After traffic fail-over we perform deployment work on Database. Which might insert/add columns etc.....
Adding columns and inserting data on once database makes Golden Gate to replicate them to target database which is not desired for a running database.
Anybody suggest what can be done in such scenario?
Also if we try to ignore those tables, we have seen a situation where Golden Gate will fail saying parent keys not found.
Any suggestion on handling such situation will help me a lot.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Maybe a late reply, but have you thought of creating an extract process specif to the deployment (active data center)?
You could use the extracted trails and pump them over to the other data center and run the trails/changes as a batch job.
I recently had a similar scenario, and create a specific extract(active center) and batch replicat(passive center). The parameter nodbcheckpoint tell Oracle GG that you are running a batch job.
    Here is an example:
GGSCI> ADD REPLICAT LOADDRP, EXTTRAIL ./dirdat/tx nodbcheckpoint
    GGSCI> EDIT PARAMS LOADDRP
    REPLICAT LOADDRP
    SETENV (NLS_LANG = "AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252")
    EXTTRAIL ./dirdat/tx
    HANDLECOLLISIONS
    --END RUNTIME
    USERID GGATE@MYDB01, PASSWORD *******
    ASSUMETARGETDEFS
    DISCARDFILE ./dirrpt/loadtemppassive.dsc, purge
    STATOPTIONS RESETREPORTSTATS
    DDL INCLUDE ALL
DDLERROR DEFAULT IGNORE RETRYOP MAXRETRIES 5
    REPORT AT 00:01
    REPORTROLLOVER AT 00:01
    REPORTCOUNT EVERY 60 SECONDS, RATE
    DDLOPTIONS REPORT
    MAP I_S_L_2.*, TARGET I_S_L_2.*;
ETC......Hope this gets you on the right track.

  • Active Data Guard VS Golden Gate

    Hi Experts,
I am looking for High Availability and Disaster Recovery architecture for my data layer i.e. Oracle Database 11g R2
We have two physical locations and the distance between two sites is around 20 miles.
    Site 1:
We already implemented RAC setup with two node in site 1.
    Site 2:
We are going to implement standalone database. (Not RAC)
    My requirements:
    1. Both databases at Site 1 & Site 2 should be replica of each other.
    2. Both databases should be in sync always.
    3. Site 1 is active and Site 2 is stand by.
    4. Client applications on Site 1 & Site 2 should always talk to RAC database on Site1.
5.. If RAC at site 1 goes down completely, then ONLY client apps should connect to Site2 database without human intervention.
How can acheive my requirement ? I was doing some research & found two solutions. 1. Active Data Guard 2. Golden Gate.
    Questions:
    1. Do Data Guard and Golden Gate offers same features ?
    2. Which products offers solutions to all my requirements or Do I need to use both ?
    3. If Data Guard and Golden Gate are different from each other then What is the difference between them and what are the overlapping features among them ?
    Thanks

    Hi;
Both tool are HA tool. Please see below link

  • Dataguard vs Golden gate

    Dear All,
I want to know the difference between Dataguard , Active dataguard and Golden gate.
Scenario: I want to replicate only between oracle 11g database.
    Bala:)

    Hi Bala,
This is pretty high level but I hope this helps:
    * Data Guard
    - Ships redo logs from a source Oracle DB to target Oracle DBs (uni-directional)
    - Targets databases are not accessible for user activity
    - Both source and targets must be on the same OS platform and Oracle version
    - There is no license for this feature though of course all software installations must be licensed
    - Primary use case is for DR or standby
    * Active Data Guard - Similar as Data Guard except:
    - Ships redo logs from a source Oracle DB to target Oracle DBs (uni-directional)
    - Targets databases are accessible for querying by end users
    - Both source and targets must be on the same OS platform and Oracle version
    - Is a licensed feature ($11,500 per core list price)
    - Primary use cases are query offloading combined with DR or standby
    - Is for 11g+ databases
    * Goldengate
    - Reads redo logs and utilizes its own transaction logs for distribution to target systems
    - Heterogeneous (i.e. source and targets can be different databases such as Oracle and MySQL, platforms, and versions) and bi-directional replication
    - Replication can also be done from non-database systems such as JMS queues
    - Can also do data light transformations
    - Is a licensed feature ($17,500 per core list price), though the license also includes Active Data Guard
    - Primary use cases include process offloading, data distribution, useable standby, DR, near zero downtime migrations/patching/upgrading, replication, CDC, light weight data transformations

  • 24/7 Active - Active database

    All:
I would really appreciate any answers to this question.
We are a global organizational and pressure is mounting on us to keep the operations a 24/7 operation.
Our SAP instances run on HPUX 11i and Oracle 9i (9205).
Maintenance is however mandated, such as Operating systems patches, Frame maintenance, switch maintenance etc. on a routine basis to support the huge database that we run (almost 2.5TB now).
We have MC service guard and a EMC frame as well as HP XP frame for our disks, although we are not using SRDF or Qasa or even HP sommersault, which are expensive options and require huge bandwidth. MC Service guard is really a failover does not allow for things such as frame maintenance. So in effect the only way to do it would be to have an additional database, for which we already have adequate hardware.
Without SRDF or Qasa, it seems like we can still have an active-active database using Oracle Dataguard which seems to be a feature at no additional cost in 9i Oracle Enterprise and is included in it. Does anyone have any experience in implementing Oracle dataguard in an SAP environment?
Also 10G has some additional features but SAP support is only commencing Q4 2005, which means it will probably by 2006 when things iron out and get stable.
    Thanks and regards,

  • Data Guard Vs Golden Gate

    Hi Experts,
I am looking for High Availability and Disaster Recovery architecture for my data layer i.e.
    Thanks

    1. Do Data Guard and Golden Gate offers same features ?No, there's simple compare here :
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/availability/dataguardgoldengate-096557.html
    2. Which products offers solutions to all my requirements or Do I need to use both ?Data Guard will work and you don't need anything else. I cannot speak to Golden Gate.
    3. If Data Guard and Golden Gate are different from each other then
What is the difference between them and what are the overlapping features among them ?Again this document :
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/features/availability/dataguardgoldengate-096557.html
    1. Both databases at Site 1 & Site 2 should be replica of each other.
    Data Guard can do this.
    2. Both databases should be in sync always.
    Data Guard can do this.
    3. Site 1 is active and Site 2 is stand by.
    Data Guard can do this.
    4. Client applications on Site 1 & Site 2 should always talk to RAC database on Site1.
You can set your tnsnames to handle this and more. Using DBMS_SERVICE you can create an alias
    to handle this.
    Ex.
    ernie =
    (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = primary.host)(PORT = 1521))
           (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = standby.host)(PORT = 1521))
           (CONNECT_DATA =
           (SERVICE_NAME = ernie)
)5. If RAC at site 1 goes down completely, then ONLY client apps should connect to Site2 database without human intervention.
You can set your tnsnames to handle this and more.
    Best Regards

  • Golden Gate topology

    Hi,
I need your help to understand topology to be used for my new golden gate configuration. I need to have active-active replication on my 11.2.0.3 databases (2 databases) in Linux environment but topology seems to much complex. Please help to answer following questions. I will be installing latest oracle golden gate and management pack available
    1. I understand that I need to install Golden Gate on both databases servers.
    2. I need to configure replication using GUI, Do I need to install Golden Gate Director to configure the replication or there is a GUI with normal Golden Gate installation which I would be installing my both nodes?
    3. Does Golden Gate director need fusion middle ware first to be installed?
    4. Does this fusion middle ware also needs to have an oracle database to be installed?
    5. Can I have this golden gate director installed on either of one database server or would I need it on a separate server.
    6. About golden gate monitor server, can i also install this monitor server on same server as golden gate director utilizing same database as golden gate director?
    Thanks

    1. I understand that I need to install Golden Gate on both databases servers.
    - Yes, this is correct, however, there is off-box processing available. (It doesn't change the licensing scheme, but it can be used to make it easier to install / implement.)  So, you can use a connect string in any of the connection parameters (like USERID, or ASMUSER) and it will connect through SQL*Net. This can be used for applying the data remotely.  In the case of Extract, you could use ALO mode to do off-box processing, or you could use Downstream Integrated Capture.
    2. I need to configure replication using GUI, Do I need to install Golden Gate Director to configure the replication or there is a GUI with normal Golden Gate installation which I would be installing my both nodes?
    - This is part of Directory, yes, which is part of the Oracle GoldenGate Management Pack.
    3. Does Golden Gate director need fusion middle ware first to be installed?
    - Now, just webcenter and a database for it's small repository.
    4. Does this fusion middle ware also needs to have an oracle database to be installed?
    - It can be Oracle, MySQL or even SQL Server.
    5. Can I have this golden gate director installed on either of one database server or would I need it on a separate server.
    - It can be on either the source or target, or separate. There is no hard requirement for the location of the repository.
    6. About golden gate monitor server, can i also install this monitor server on same server as golden gate director utilizing same database as golden gate director?
-Yes, and it can use the same database repository server as well.

  • Golden Gate pump lag

Hi all, i was seeing 20 minutes lag in pump activity while working on Golden Gate for our SIT environment. Any way to minimize the lag caused by pump activity?
For only 300MB of trail files to be pumped it took 20 minutes of lag to pump them on to target server. Any help on this is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance..

    Hi steven for your questions:
What have you done to tune your network?
    I did nothing.
Are you using a data pump? Do you see checkpoint values increasing in primary extract, but not as fast in the data pump?
i am using golden gate pump process, but not data pump. Actually i am seeing lag in checkpoint time. It goes on increasing.
Are you using multiple process groups?
Yes i am using one extract and two pump process for different targets.

  • How can we achive active/active cluster setup with Oracle

    Hi Experts,
How can we achieve active/active database setup with oracle WITHOUT USING RAC.. As far as I know it's impossible (unless I'm wrong)..
We are using Oracle 11.2.0.1 64bit on Windows 2008 server. We deployed Oracle FailSafe but that's more of an active/passive solution based on a windows cluster.
The other solution we were thinking about is to use DataGuard and replication.. two servers.. the oracle instance running on one server generating logs, and the other server receive the logs and apply them to the physical standby db.. Still, this is not a real active/active setup.
So, is it possible to run 2 servers in an active/active cluster and have the oracle database in an active/active setup or have the instance running on multiple nodes (at the same time)?
    Thanks

Let me give you a brief explanation of what the situation is and you can be the judge..
My client have four databases with the smallest one being 20GB and the biggest around the 35gb (SGA 750mb to 1.4gb (Tiny by DB standards) and probably on a normal day, you can run all four of them on a decent desktop).. The DBs are used to keep track of people information. Through out the year, the databases are almost sitting idle, and by idle I mean, the odd update here and there, the odd report..etc. No hard real processing of any sort. Two days of the year (end of year) we have all the operators consolidating records and what's not and they will be pounding away entering data and updating the tables - with hourly reports that goes to 3rd parties. The client expects a 99.99 up time and availability during those 2 days.
Now, tell me, How can I justify using RAC and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing and what ever extra costs introduced by the complexity of the environment for the above scenario knowing that I don't have any real use for RAC for 363 days of the year; and we MIGHT need it for 2 days of the year? This is the dilemma we're facing.
    Thanks

  • Bidirectional full active/active sites replicaion methods

    Hi.
We have 3 servers with Oracle Data Base on three sites.
A full active/active site and servers configuration is required, including bidirectional changes.
All Data Base may be replicated at least once per some minutes.
What replication technology can be used?
“Data Guard”, “Streams” or something else?
“Streams” requires more investment and expertise to build and maintain.
Is it still possible to implement our requirements with “Data Guard” Logical Database and SQL mode or in some other way with some limitations?
    Thanks,
    Anatoly

By active/active, do you mean that insert/update/delete transactions will be executed against all three systems simultaneously? If so, DataGuard would be inappropriate—
    1. Yes
Streams and Multi-Master Replication would be the two options.
    2. Why Multi-Master Replication is not mentioned in the Oracle’s manual named:
    Oracle® Database High Availability Overview 10g Release 2 (10.2)
    3. I would, however, question the wisdom of such a requirement-- why do you need the 3 nodes in the first place? You might well be better served by building a 3 node RAC cluster if the goal is to distribute load over multiple servers and/or to provide redundancy for node failures.
    The goal are:
    - to distribute load over multiple servers
    - to provide redundancy for node failures
    - to provide usually Enterprise users with the nearest (quickest access) available server (1 Site - US office, 2 - Site AU office, 3 Site - Europe Office)
So as a solution for each Site to provide replicated DataBase and active server and active Database.
How 3 node RAC cluster can serve this requirements?
Or you see something not sensibly in the requirements?
Can you point to advantages and disadvantages?
    4. How quickly does a change to one node need to be propagated to the other nodes? "Some minutes" may mean very different things to different people-- every minute? every 2 minutes? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 15 minutes?
It is no so critical for the system. 10-15 minutes is OK may be even more…
    5. How much data is going to change in a given time period?
The system has it’s peak hours… Also it depends of number of users...
Usually it may be some 150 kB during 10 minutes
    Thanks,
    Anatoly

  • Failover active/active cluster

I want to create a failover cluster where both the database servers are active. If one of them fails, then the other should take over. I don't want to create shared storage system like the RAC. What are the hardware requirements? I think 4 network adapters, 2 on each of the servers plus two switches, 1 for public network and the other to connect between the 2 servers while synchronization is being performed should be sufficient, Isn't it?
How should I install oracle? Do I have to install cluster software on 1 of those servers before installing oracle on the same server. What do I have to do while configuring the oracle software so that synchronization will be automatically performed?

Probably you don't want RAC then. RAC is about shared storage. Check:
    1) DataGuard wih Active DataGuard
    2) multimaster repliaction (Streams etc)
btw: RAC nodes are connected to filers/storage arrays that have high level redundancy than servers so it is much harder to find failing storage array. You can even utilise ASM to have mirrored storage arrays for even higher redundancy... (N servers with M filers/storage arrays).

  • Asa in active/active vpn solution licensing question

    Hello All
I have a customer with the following requirements:
    1) A Cisco VPN Solution that will be support SSL VPN and Cisco Client VPN - The  solution will be a failover configuration running in an active-active set up.  The solution offered will be fully supported (i.e. it will not go into End of  Life or and lower level of support etc) by Cisco for the next 5 Years.
    a. We  would expect the devices to be similar to the ASA 5520 Appliance with  SW,HA,$GE+1FE,£DES/AES (Including ASA 5500 Advanced Endpoint ASS)
    2) User  licenses for the above - Please quote for both the following
    a. 500 appropriate SSL VPN User Licenses
    b. 250  appropriate SSL VPN User Licenses
I am quoting them for the 500 ssl vpn bundle
    ASA5520-SSL500-K9 and for the
    ASA5520-BUN-K9.
Is it right that in active/active  software 8.3 and above that the 500 ssl vpn licenses will be shared between the 2 asa's or will I need to have 250 licenses on each asa.
Also I have read that in active/active I cannot use shared licenses, is this relevant in a vpn solution?
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa84/license/license_management/license_86.html#wp2003381
Url above has this “The  backup server mechanism is separate from, but compatible with,  failover.
Shared  licenses are supported only in single context mode, so Active/Active failover is  not supported.”
    Also “Failover  Guidelines
•Shared licenses are not supported in Active/Active mode. See the "Failover  and Shared Licenses" section for more  information.
I also need to purchase the
    ASA-ADV-END-SEC and
ASA-AC-M-5520 (any connect mobile) as the vpn client is eos/eol.
Do I need to buy this for both asa's or can they share them in active/active mode.
    Thanks in advance.
    Feisal

Hi Vibhor and thanks for the quick reply. We will be using version 9.3. I was aware that the ASA does not support PBR but I thought with the new code you could do some policy nat that could help influence the outbound flow?
So in this case we have 2x ISPs and 2x public address space, one from each ISP. How is the NAT and routing handled by the ASA in this design?
Can I not identify the guest subnet (192.168.0.0/22) and NAT this to a public address from ISP1 and also identify the corp subnets (10.x.x.x)  and NAT them to ISP2?
My understanding (which is probably wrong) is that the NAT will select the egress interface rather than the routing table, so guest will be sent via ISP1 since the SVI interface of the ASA that connects to this ISP1 has an IP address from the same public address space..?
    Is that incorrect?
    Many thanks
    Rays

  • Unable to failover the services in active-active cluster node

    Hi,
i am applying the sp2 patch for sql server 2008 r2 in active-active cluster, we have 3 services in the cluster , node 1 as 2 prefered owner and node 2 as 1 prefered owner, when i try to move the service from node 2 to node1 , i am getting the below errors
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXXXXXXXX using any of the configured protocols.
The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server XXXXXXXXX. The target name used was RPCSS/XXXXXX. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client. This can occur when the target server principal
name (SPN) is registered on an account other than the account the target service is using. Please ensure that the target SPN is registered on, and only registered on, the account used by the server. This error can also happen when the target service is using
a different password for the target service account than what the Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC) has for the target service account. Please ensure that the service on the server and the KDC are both updated to use the current password. If the server
name is not fully qualified, and the target domain (XXXXXX) is different from the client domain (XXXXXXX), check if there are identically named server accounts in these two domains, or use the fully-qualified name to identify the server.
The Cluster service failed to bring clustered service or application 'CHCROCHC045' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered service or application.

    Hi PGR,
As the issue is more related to Windows Server, I would like to recommend you post the issue in the
Windows Server forums for better support.
In addition, below are some article about troubleshooting error ” DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXXXXXXXX using any of the configured protocols” for your reference.

  • Clustering of Oracle AS 10.1.3.0 nodes in active-active topology

    Hi,
The following requirements for clustering in our environment exist:
    * Active-active topology
    * External hardware load-balancer
    * Fail-over
    * Application session-state replication
We use multiple Oracle AS 10.1.3.0 nodes. Applications are deployed on 2 or more OC4J instances on those nodes.
I've read the Oracle docs on clustering and I have some questions regarding the clustering configuration to use:
    1. When an external hardware load-balancer is used, is configuring an Oracle AS cluster needed then? The docs talk about clusters, but in some cases I'm not sure whether an Oracle AS cluster or a hardware cluster is meant.
    2. It seems not entirely clear what type of application clustering to use in combination with an Oracle AS cluster: either multicast or peer-to-peer? If I'm correct the Oracle docs suggest to use dynamic peer-to-peer application clustering if an Oracle AS cluster is used and multicast for standalone OC4J. Is that correct?
    Thanks,
    Ronald

    1. Well, the idea is to have all clients route their HTTP requests to the physical load-balancer. The load-balancer will route/forward the requests to one of the Oracle AS nodes based on the load on those machines. If application state is synchronized between the application(s) on the OC4J instances, it would not be necessary to configure an Oracle AS cluster? Or are there advantages for having such a cluster? One of the pros I can think of would be that groups are automatically created so deployment/management of the application(s) becomes easier. Are there any other? Or is this configuration w/o Oracle AS cluster not a good idea?
    2. Clear.
    3. JMS, thanks for the tip.
    4. Yes we use Oracle RAC. Does that impose constraints on the Oracle AS clustering and/or application clustering?
    Ronald
