Dataguard PROTECTION_LEVEL
Dear All
Hi
I want to know when you have Data guard in 10g Rel2 and your primary database protection mode is configured as MAXIMUM PROTECTION , when the standby database goes down , how long the PROTECTION_LEVEL remains RESYNCHRONIZATION before the priamry database shutdown ? and how we can change this time ???
Thanks
Choosing a Data Protection Mode
To determine the appropriate data protection mode to use, review the following descriptions of the data protection modes to help assess your business requirements for data availability against user demands for response time and performance.
Maximum Protection Mode
This protection mode ensures that no data loss will occur if the primary database fails. To provide this level of protection, the redo data needed to recover each transaction must be written to both the local online redo log and to the standby redo log on at least one standby database before the transaction commits. To ensure data loss cannot occur, the primary database shuts down if a fault prevents it from writing its redo stream to at least one remote standby redo log. For multiple-instance RAC databases, Data Guard shuts down the primary database if it is unable to write the redo records to at least one properly configured database instance. The maximum protection mode requires that at least one standby instance has a standby redo log and the LGWR, SYNC, and AFFIRM attributes be used on the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter for this destination.
Maximum Availability Mode*
This protection mode provides the highest level of data protection that is possible without compromising the availability of the primary database. Like maximum protection mode, a transaction will not commit until the redo needed to recover that transaction is written to the local online redo log and to at least one remote standby redo log. Unlike maximum protection mode, the primary database does not shut down if a fault prevents it from writing its redo stream to a remote standby redo log. Instead, the primary database operates in maximum performance mode until the fault is corrected and all gaps in redo log files are resolved. When all gaps are resolved, the primary database automatically resumes operating in maximum availability mode.
This mode ensures that no data loss will occur if the primary database fails, but only if a second fault does not prevent a complete set of redo data from being sent from the primary database to at least one standby database.
Like maximum protection mode, the maximum availability mode requires that you:
Configure standby redo log files on at least one standby database.
Set the SYNC, LGWR, and AFFIRM attributes of the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter for at least 1 standby database.
Maximum Performance Mode
This protection mode (the default) provides the highest level of data protection that is possible without affecting the performance of the primary database. This is accomplished by allowing a transaction to commit as soon as the redo data needed to recover that transaction is written to the local online redo log. The primary database's redo data stream is also written to at least one standby database, but that redo stream is written asynchronously with respect to the commitment of the transactions that create the redo data.
When network links with sufficient bandwidth are used, this mode provides a level of data protection that approaches that of maximum availability mode with minimal impact on primary database performance.
The maximum performance mode enables you to either set the LGWR and ASYNC attributes, or set the ARCH attribute on the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter for the standby database destination. If the primary database fails, you can reduce the amount of data that is not received on the standby destination by setting the LGWR and ASYNC attributes.

My Active dataguard is not applying archives.
Dears,
Following is my setup
=====================
Primary:
prod on RAC with 2 nodes
Database : Oracle 11.2.0.3
OS OEL 5.7
storage : ASM
+DATADG
+FLASHDG
Standby:
sync on single node
Database : Oracle 11.2.0.3
storage : ASM
+DATADG
+FLASHDG
I've configured Active dataguard successfully and was able to apply archivelogs successfully instantly.
Archive log locations are +FLASHDG/prod/ARCHIVELOG/ AND /u02/arch --- on primary
Archive log locations are +FLASHDG/stby/ARCHIVELOG/ AND /u02/arch --- on standby
On Standby

Upto now everything is ok, means same data is sync on primary and standby. As my archive location was getting full, i've used this SQL query to clean them
SELECT 'alter diskgroup '||dg.name||' drop file
''+'||dg.name||''||SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH(al.name,'/')||''';'
FROM v$asm_alias al, v$asm_file fi, v$asm_diskgroup dg
WHERE al.file_number = fi.file_number(+)
AND al.group_number = dg.group_number
AND fi.type = 'ARCHIVELOG'
START WITH alias_index = 0
CONNECT BY PRIOR al.reference_index = al.parent_index;
SELECT 'alter diskgroup '||dg.name||' drop file
''+'||dg.name||''||SYS_CONNECT_BY_PATH(al.name,'/')||''';'
FROM v$asm_alias al, v$asm_file fi, v$asm_diskgroup dg
WHERE al.file_number = fi.file_number(+)
AND al.group_number = dg.group_number
AND fi.type = 'BACKUPSET'
START WITH alias_index = 0
CONNECT BY PRIOR al.reference_index = al.parent_index;
In order to delete ARCHIVE logs which are stored in ASM FLASHDG, which will have a type of "ARCHIVELOG" and "BACKUPSET" i've used this above two queries.
After performing this steps , my Active dataguard is not applying archives.
On the primary server, check the latest archived redo log

Hello Everyone,
I am facing a issue with Dataguard setup. Following is the description:
Purpose:
Setup a Dataguard using Oracle Data Guard Solution between Production & DR(Physical standby) databases.
Problem Statement:
In case the network connectivity interrupted between Primary database and Physical Standby database, the Primary database is unable to respond to application servers. This issue occurred when the log shipment process is on. However, if the log shipment of Oracle Data Guard is stopped then production database/ system is working fine even if the connectivity between Primary database and Physical Standby database is interrupted.
Standby database is configured in high performance mode.
Environment:
Database Software Primary and Standby Server – Oracle10g Enterprise with Partition option, 64 bit, Version – 10.2.0.4
Primary Database server is configured with Two Sun M5000 nodes in OS cluster environment, Active and Passive Mode, Sun Cluster Suite 3.2 and OS Solaris 10
Standby Database Server is configured, Server – V890, OS Solaris 10
Java based multiple application are connected with Primary database using JDBC type 4 driver to processed the request.
Two independent IPMP are configured on Primary database server, one for application network and second for data guard network.
Application network are configured with dedicated switch and data guard network is connected with different switch.
Single listener is configured on Physical IP and Application is connecting to database through virtual IP dynamically assigned through cluster serviceSQL> SELECT PROTECTION_MODE, PROTECTION_LEVEL, DATABASE_ROLE FROM V$DATABASE;

Hi,
We have dataguard on Oracle 10g. The logs are shipped from primary to physical stand by but when I look at "Last Applied Log" under EM on the primary db, I see 0. The logs are shipping but not applied to physical stand by.
I restarted the standby to mount stage.
I can tnsping both the database from other servers

Dataguard 'max protection' mode failed
Testing Dataguard in MAX PROTECTION mode on Oracle 10.2.0.4 on Solaris x86_64.
Test 1: Primary remained up allowing transactions to continue inspite of the fact that the server running the standby database was not reachable. Waited for over 10 minutes and then cancelled the test. All that happened was the protection_level changed to resynchronization. I could not believe my eyes. Is this possible?
Test 2: The primary shutdown automatically but after about 6 minutes of the standby database was shut abort. So what about all those transactions that took place during those 6 minutes? Those would be lost - isnt it?
I just cant believe this. Where am I going wrong? I confirmed that LAD_2 was set to lgwr sync affirm. And that protection mode was set to 'maximum protection'.
Somebody, pls enlighten me?
Thanks
Edited by: user12022918 on 27-May-2013 08:42If you have several physical standby database for the same primary database then this could be expected behaviour otherwise this looks like a bug that you should report to Oracle Support who will very likely ask you to upgrade at least to 10.2.0.5 patchset or 11.2.0.3.

Dataguard recovery not happenning
Hi,
I have configured physical standby dataguard for maximum availability and was working fine. When i did switchover i found that the archives are transfered but the recovery is not havppening. I created a table on my present primary and log switched, but the table is not recovered at standby.

Hi,
I just would like to understand as how Dataguard protection mode works. I have changed from the "ARCH" attribute to "LGWR" attribute of the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n initialization parameter as below. But I have not changed the protection mode. I do not know whether there is any impact in the behavior of the database, if we do not change the mode from "MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE" to "MAXIMUM AVAILABILITY".
Your clarification will be appreciated.
log_archive_dest_2 =
SERVICE=O01CAS3DR VALID_FOR=(ONLINE_LOGFILES,PRIMARY_ROLE) DB_UNIQUE_NAME=O01CAS3DR LGWR SYNC NOAFFIRM
sql> select PROTECTION_MODE,PROTECTION_LEVEL from v$database;
PROTECTION_MODE PROTECTION_LEVEL
MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE
Set Appropriate Database Protection Mode:
You can choose between three protection modes, with different logging options. Each mode for your environment has a different impact on availability, costs, data loss, performance, and scalability. Choose one of the following depending on your service level agreements:
· Maximum Protection mode with LGWR SYNC AFFIRM option for an environment that requires no data loss and no divergence. Performance overhead is incurred.
· Maximum Availability mode with LGWR SYNC AFFIRM option for an environment that needs no data loss but tolerates divergence when sites are temporarily inaccessible.
· Maximum Performance mode with LGWR ASYNC (AFFIRM or NOAFFIRM) option for an environment that tolerates minimal data loss and divergence when sites are temporarily inaccessible. Performance overhead is minimized.Hi..
Do you know at what time do you want to open the read only database.I thinks the steps will be
1. alter database recover managed standby cancel;
2. alter database open read only;
This will open the database
After the batch report is done, then a script must be run where
1. shu immediate;
2. startup nomount
3. alter database mount standby database;
4. alter database recover managed standby database disconnect from session;
Now, you need to put all these steps in the script.

9i Dataguard Problem in MAXIMUM PROTECTION mode
Dear All
Hi
I have 9i Rel 2 (9.2.07) dataguard environment on Linux Redhat Advanced Server 3
The Pretenction mode is Maximum Protection
One day I noticed that my dataguard Database is about 100 log files before than the Primary:
On priamry the current log sequence# was 7804
But in standby the last log that was transfered and applied was 7716
In primary I executed the following select:
SQL> Select protection_mode , protection_level from v$database;
the result was:
protection_mode=MAXIMUM PROTECTION
protection_level=SYNCHRONIZING
What I want to know is:
Why the primary database did not become shutdown when it is in MAXIMUM PROTECTION mode and why it has continued working when the log files could not transfer to standby database ????
Thank you in advance for your replyAnybody any idea ??????

Hi everybody!
I have a problem. Some weeks ago I opened a post related to this issue. We have two dataguards with dataguard broker. One of them is resync (thanks to mseberg and this forum) and now I have problems with the other.
Once I have learned how to configure and start/stop dataguard broker, I have a more basic problem, which is to resync it. I follow a process, where I backup the primary with RMAN, I copy the rman files to the other server with the controlfile, at once, I recover with rman again.
The problem is that it is too big, 2 hours for backing it up more or less, and when I restore it, no archivelog list appears being syncronized.
I have followed the same process than the other one and I can't resync it. I think there is something at my params or something new at 11g version...

I have quick couple of questions on dataguard.
1) how much time time it will take to generate (move ) the logfiles from production to standby database ?
2) Can we speed up the transfer the logfile from PROD to Standby?
3) If 2nd Questions is YES. How can i speed up the process?
In IBM DB2 its just 30 Sec max to replicate the data from PROD to STANDBY. Becasue we dont want to loose the data for a while.
Thanks

Venkat.K.RajuWhat is your database version?
Assuming that it is 10g R2, the following white paper has all the answers you need:

5 Dataguard questions on implementation and maintainence
I have created Oracle10g Dataguard Physical standby. Everything seems to working properly. I switch a log@primary and i see it applied at standby. In OEM the Primary instance is shown as "Primary" and Dataguard Normal.
Questions
=======
1.I used cold backup to create physical standby where i copied just the datafiles. I DID NOT copy the online logfiles from primary DB . Is this ok?
Reason i am asking is, I am seeing this in alertlog (Please see in Bold below). Could this message in alert be ignored?
Fri Mar 14 16:11:55 2008

2. Physical standby was created in default mode " MAX PERFORMANCE" but i followed the manual and i realize i created standby redo logs at primary DB.
Is it true we do not need standby redo logs for MAX PERFORMANCE mode?
3. What is the quickest way to create a physical standby taking into consideration the downtime of the primary database.
4. Can we setup Dataguard for a live running production database (assuming prod is all set with prepare steps as laid out in manual) without downtime.
5. I hear dataguard management involves lot of shell scripting for log shipping, failover, switchover etc. Looking at 10g manual all these appear to be handled automatically if configured. Is it true that all the Dataguard functionality is auto and does not need shell scripting?
These are the things came up to mind. Please list any others you can think of for a Dataguard implementation. Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks and have a great time.
S~My question is , I havent created either online logfiles or standby log files on the secondary database, then how is RFS process applying the logs to the standby database?
If you do not create standby log files on the secondary database, then RFS process will apply logs from primary DB's archieved redo logs, refer 5.1 Introduction to Redo Transport Services.(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/log_transport.htm)
Also i see entries in v$log@standby, since i haven't created log files@standby where is this info getting from?
It will be through the entry in Stndby DB parameter file "LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT=
'/arch1/chicago/','/arch1/boston/','/arch2/chicago/','/arch2/boston/'
Thanks -
Not able to get data of primary in standby database (configured dataguard)
Hi all, I configured dataguard in my local system, i ve a few qsns (as i am new, ve patience)
1) scn differs wrt primary in standby (i checked, 1day difference), how to make scn same?
2)i created a table in primary, its not refelecting in standby, (below i ve pasted alertlog entries)

Hi all, I configured dataguard in my local system, i ve a few qsns (as i am new, ve patience)
1) scn differs wrt primary in standby (i checked, 1day difference), how to make scn same?Please do not use IM language here, instead of "qsns" use questions.
SCN can be differ in standby and it can be behind to primary based on the backup you have restored. Of course by performing recovery you can synchronize standby with primary database. You can use incremental backups for standby using link http://www.oracle-ckpt.com/rman-incremental-backups-to-roll-forward-a-physical-standby-database-2/
2)i created a table in primary, its not refelecting in standby, (below i ve pasted alertlog entries)
