DataRescueII won't recover mail

Help....
I trashed the mail.plist file in my users/xxx/library/prefs because I thought that would solve a problem I am having with Mail. When I went to re-open Mail.app, it asked me to start a new account. YIKES! Where are my several POP accounts and all my mail. I did not restart or open other apps. I quickly ran the demo of DataRescue II, but it didn't recover the .plist file
The Mail folder in the library is still intact, and it has all my POP / IMAP accounts listed. I backed this up.
Have I lost all my messages?
Back Story...
I got a used MacBook Pro running 10.4.7. I wanted to switch over to it from my G4 15". I had very little time and did NOT do a back up before doing the Migration in Taget mode. The Migration Asst. would not work (long story involving Apple care on the phone). I had to reinstall the MAC OS and use CarbonCopy to bring everything over. I tested almost everything after the transfer, and only lost some utilities (Drive Genius, TechTools, MAc Stumbler) and the Statnano widget - all these would not run on the intel.
When I tested Mail, e-mails were coming in on all accounts.
All my mail from the old computer was where it should be. Great.
But when I tried to create a new e-mail or reply to an old one, the SEND button and REPLY buttons would not work (just clicked but no actions). I've had this nightmare of a problem with Mail in the past. I thought that trashing the pref file was what worked before. Did I just make a huge error?
MacBook Pro 15"Pbook G4 15" Aluminum, iBook 14" 1GHz, Tbook 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Since the Mail.app preference file stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences, when moving the preference file out of the Preferences folder requires re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
This is the procedure I recommend when targeting the Mail.app preference file.
With the Mail.app quit the using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file to the Desktop.
I quickly ran the demo of DataRescue II, but it didn't recover the .plist file
When targeting an application's preference file, better to move it to the Desktop first and not delete it. If an unexpected problem occurs, you can quit the application and move the preference file from the Desktop back to the Preferences folder to restore previous application settings.
Since you already trashed the original preference file, do so again with the new/existing com.apple.mail.plist file and empty the Trash.
Note: Deleting or moving the com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After re-entering all email account information and confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder placed on the Desktop.

The laptop's too far away from the router to be connected by ethernet. It's all wifi.
No separate server app on the laptop, it's all samba
The files are on a windows laptop and a hard drive hooked up to the windows laptop. The windows share server is pants, so I'd need some sort of third party server running. Maybe you weren't suggesting to use Samba to connect to the windows share though?
I'm glad that you've all understood my ramblings and taken and interest, thanks The way I see it, I can't be the only netbook user these days looking for this kind of convenience, and I certainly won't be once chrome and moblin hit the market.

  • HT201250 How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

    This worked for me:
From Time Machine, restore a good backup of the entire  "/Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book"  folder to a different location, like to a folder on your desktop.
(note: the Library folder typically won't show up in Finder. To make it visible, in Terminal, issue this command:
            defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
then restart Finder:  killall Finder  )
Go offline.  Do whatever you need to do to get completely disconnected from the internet (turn off Wireless, unplug the ethernet cable, etc.).  Otherwise, iCloud will immediately overwrite your restore.
Delete the real folder:  /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book
Copy your restore (at the different location), to the real location ( /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book )
Restart Contacts.  Your restored data you want should be there.  Before going online again, Export all these contacts (File - Export - etc...)
Go online again.  iCloud will wipe out your Address Book with what's on iCloud. Re-import contacts as needed from your Export.

  • Filevault won't recover disk space

I have filevault on on my macbook pro. When I shutdown, it usually recovers the disk space that is replaced from the files I deleted (when I emptied the trash), as it should. However, this is the second time that I've had this problem where, when I shutdown or restart or logoff, filevault won't recover my disk space. And I need that space...now! What do I do? Why won't it show the "recovering disk space" thing when I shut down?! In the past, I just waited a while, and eventually, it worked one day.

I'm using ipad2 with ios5. My outbox won't send mail. I guess i need an outgoing server and can't find it anywhere. Any suggestions on how to get it to send. I have tried everything, rebooting, ensuring passwords are correct, etc.

My problem is i don't have an outgoing server spot on my menu.  These are my selections. After getting to the menu that where i enter my password for hotmail, i have the following menu choices:  Email, then server (bay-m.hotmail.com, then domain (empty), then username, then password, thendescription, then Use SSL, then S/MIME
I don't see or can find an outgoing server choice. My daughter has an ipad2 using Ios4 and she has all the choices that are illustrated on. All the help sites. I only have the ones listed above.

  • Outbox won't send mail

Had a problem earlier with my email account (Yahoo) being hacked, After resetting password all seemed to be well, but now my iPad won't send mail, it goes into OUTBOX but won't send. Receiving mail is no problem.
I am new to iPad and need a bit of help.
    Thanks
    John

    Brilliant! Thanks Jaimi E.
My iPad did resume 'normal service' after an overnight rest. I did not know that there was an imposed 24hr quarantine, but I do know that all's well now.
I found The BT staff in their technical help desk were good at fixing the original hacking problem on my laptop, but totally helpless at sorting the iPad issues out.
I had to talk to Apple help desk in UK who in turn put me through to the USA. Their consultant was great, but he undoubtedly didn't seem to aware of the quarantine imposed by Yahoo. I will try to get this information through to him for future information
Thanks to all for your assistance.
My message to anyone who reads this topic and has been hacked on Yahoo (or btinternet) is
1 update security passwords on laptop. New password required. Delete all traces of hacked messages (inc failed delivery notices and real people's responses)
2 uninstall your mail settings on iPad and reinstall with new mail password on iPad.
3 the iPad mail system should then receive, but not send mail (goes into Outbox)
4 wait 24 hours then everything will be back to normal.
As a brand new user and about to go on a long holiday, it was a nightmare, but ended up fine!
Now in Singapore at 6am local time, can't sleep so catching up on my machine which functions perfectly!

  • Where is "Recovered Mail"?

Time Machine recovers a complete Mailbox to a folder set Time Machine>Recovered Mail. But I can't find an .mbox file in my Home Library>Mail with either of those names.
Does anyone know where they reside?

The easiest way to deal with them is via Mail -- the folder(s) should appear in the sidebar, something like this:
    |
    |
They should be in +*<your home folder>/Library/Mail/<Mailboxes>/com.apple.Mail.backup+*
Note that it's a "package:" you'll have to right-click it and select +Show Package Contents+ to get at the individual messages.

  • Really weird problem -- won't download mail from one sender

I'm having a really weird problem. Apple Mail won't retrieve mail from my Gmail account via POP3 from one sender only. All other mail is downloaded normally, except from a particular sender. What could be causing this? Thanks.

I am trying to remember and research something about the Junk filter and Gmail accounts. Have you checked in your Junk mailbox, if Junk in enabled and there is a separate Junk mailbox?
If you click on my name to the left, and look in the bio line of the resulting Profile, you will find an email address you can reach me with. If you email me at that address, I will send you a Gmail address that your sender can test sending a message to me at my Gmail account.

  • Mini 210 won't recover

My Mini 210 Netbook with Windows 7 Starter won't recover.  When I turn the computer on,  a screen with 2 options appears.  Either do a startup repair or start up normally.  Neither of these options work.  The start up repair takes me to a blue screen and goes no further.  I have no recovery disk for this computer and I'm not even sure the one HP offers at $45 will even work for this computer.  Anyone have any suggestions?  I'm almost at the point where I'm considering tossing this useless machine and buying a new one.....Not HP!!

Test the hard drive then the memory modules, post back the results.

  • Why won't Apple Mail utilize addresses from Apple Contacts ?

Why won't Apple Mail utilize addresses from Apple Contacts ?
Some of the people in my contacts have multiple e-mail addresses.   Using contacts from within Apple Mail I can see these e-mail addresses.  I then select the e-mail address I need to use and it is highlighted in blue.  However, when I drag that e-mail address into the e-mail it uses the first e-mail address on the list and does NOT use the one that is highlighted.
This worked perfectly with good old Snow Leopard. Why doesn't it work now?  What is the procedure for selecting an e-mail address that is not the first one in contacts ?

To see if there's a recovery volume installed reboot with the Option key held down and see what volumes are shown that you can book from.  If there is a recovery volume it will be displayed.  The arrow keys can be used to moved to the desired volume and the Enter or Return key to start the boot.
Yes I did that. I don't no why, but I have no recovery volume.
However, I do have mavericks on a USB flash drive. I booted from the flash drive and followed your procedure.  This did not fix my Mail problem.
I notice now that after I drag an e-mail address into the header there is a small down arrow next to the incorrect e-mail address, this allows me to choose from a small group including the correct e-mail.  I'm just wondering, perhaps this Is the way Apple Mail works in Mavericks.

  • MBP won't send mail

I have both a MBP & MBA.  For some reason the MBP has stopped sending mail from the mail app.  The out going server is the same with both; smtp.me.com:user name.  However, the MBP won't send mail.
I thought it was a MobileMe problem.  Then this morning I picked up the MBA and as soon as MobileMe did a sync there was the out going mail that was in my out box on the MPB.  MobileMe did a sync and immediately sent the mail.  I'd already tried MobileMe Express Lane this morning, but the site isn't working ... come back later.
I'm stumped as to why the MobileMe mail works on the MBA and not the MBP where the mail originated.
    Any ideas?

Double check with your ISP for the correct Outgoing Mail Server format.

  • Can you recover mail from deleted account?

Using Mail 2.0.5, I kept getting a message that port 25 was blocked, and couldn't receive mail from that account. I didn't think to check .mac for solution, but created a new mail account under a different name, with the same settings. When it worked, I deleted the original account...but didn't realize I'd lose all the mail associated with it in my mail program. Thought it would be stored someplace, but I can't find it anywhere. Is there any way to recover mail from a deleted Mail account?

Never did find a solution to this. However because we are using IMAP accounts most of the mail was cached on the client Macs. So I offlined them, loaded Mail, copied all the mail into local mailboxes, recreated the users, went online and copied the mail back into the new hierarchy.
Still can't believe I did such a daft thing!

  • HT6154 Iphone 5s randomly won't charge anymore and won't recover or go into DFU mode

My Iphone 5s randomly won't charge anymore and won't recover or go into DFU mode. It died and it only shows the bolt symbol with the charger on the screen. When I plug in my charger the screen lights up but doesnt charge. I bought another charger to be safe and that didnt work either. My phone was working fine and this randomly happened

Carefully clean iPhone charging port with clean dry toothbrush. If still problem, iPhone 5S has Warranty, make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send iPhone to Apple for resolution.
