Datawarehouse and BW
Dear all,
What is the different b/w Dataware house and BW
Thanks
V>G>VG
Hi,
1.D/W is the concept, where as BW is the application developed by SAP uses this concept.
2. D/W concepts are used in other D/W applications, but compare to others SAP BW is having various functionalists like Extended star schema, interfaces and RSA1 - Administration workbench.

Hi Friends,
Iam new to Oracle dataware house and ETL,i have some some doubts please advice me.
1.i have installed oracle warehouse builder and stated trying mapping section.
Iam not using any ETL tool, without using ETL tool we can do the ETL process ???
please advice.
VinuThe Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) is an ETL tool. So there's nothing that prevents you from designing ETL processes apart from, maybe, missing knowledge. With OWB and an Oracle database you've got all what you need to create mappings.

Oracle Standard Edition and OLAP
Hi all,
Am I correct in thinking that datawarehouse and OLAP style features are only available as an extra option when you have purchased Oracle Enterprise edition?
Are there any OLAP related features that come with Standard edition, or do you have to go the whole hog just to make a basic cube?
Many thanks
Simon[email protected] wrote:

If you mean Multidimensional OLAP cube, then yes it is only available in the OLAP option that extends Enterprise Edition. But few people need that kind of power.
Or do you mean 'cube' or 'rollup' described http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10810/aggreg.htm#DWHSG8648 which os a completely different animal. A LOT of ROLAP capability, including cube and rollup, even exist in Express Edition. -
Webservice so applications can request images (jpg) from BI datawarehouse
Hello all,
We would like to have an integrated XI-BI scenario.
In BI we would like to store images in the Datawarehouse.
We would like to make these images available through a webservice and use XI as middleware application to call the webservice and show the stored image (as an attachment) to a website.
It is possible to store .jpg images in a BI datawarehouse to attach the image as a value to the info object. It is also possible to show the picture from a database when a hyperlink is requested (e.g. http://<SERVER>:<PORT>/SAP/BW/DOC/MAST/FLDMAST/test2.jpg).
We do not now if there is a shared webservice available in BI so XI e.g. can request the stored image from the datawarehouse and BI sends the picture as a response to XI.
Anyone an idea?
Regards,
LucHi,
I am not 100% confident... But I think it is possible through SOAP Attachments...

Discoverer without the concept of DataWarehouse
Hi,
Is it possible to "correctly" use Discoverer without the existence of a DataWarehouse? What I mean is, will I
get good results if my project is plugged on a 3NF (relationnal) DB?
Or, in an other way, could I schematized my data model in a star schema, without the concept of time (cause I won't be using a Datawarehouse) and without the concept of fact table (no summarized field)?
Thanks in advance.Hi,
Yes, you can use Discoverer against any Oracle database. However, you may no get good performance unless you summarise your data.

Hi,
We have OBIEE integrated with Oracle Apps. During installation we also get the Vanilla rpd. we are also using another new module which uses another database but not the Oracle apps. We have requirement of OBIEE reports on this module. This databse is an OLTP database. We are trying to add another source to the rpd and pull these tables and create a subject area. My understanding is that this is possible. So we will have two sources. One that came in the vanilla rpd which is datawarehouse and the other which is OLTP for the new module. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.hi User,
You are doing correct let me add some points
which uses another database but not the Oracle apps. We have requirement of OBIEE reports on this module. This database is an OLTP database.You have Different connection pools by default when u install oracle Apps next,you are customizing the rpd by adding some OLTP database ,
Merging the Vanilla rpd + Custom rpd (i mean connection pools)
make sure that all the join conditions to be made and report should be from theis subject area

OLAP Analytic Workspace Manager and Worksheet
Hi,
I have installed a datawarehouse and OLAP 10gR2 on a WinXP but in the Start menu.
- Oracle_home, in Integrated Management Tools, I do not haveOLAP Analytic
Workspace Manager and Worksheet.
What is the problem ? What more should I install ?
Many thanks for your help.Hi,
What more should I install ?Did you do the OLAP catalog (dbms_olap)?
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/samples/samples_readme.html
Check the install docs for full instructions, and don't forget to pay your $20,000.00 license fee first:

Sharing in Symetrics Array an Oracle datawerehouse and oracle database 9i
I
i want to know if someone have an sharing in Symetrics Array an Oracle
datawerehouse and oracle database 9i, or any array for high
availability. This because i have to do implement an installation
datawarehouse and db9i on the same arrary. Just know any comment if
whichever with share with me your expertise from any situation with
this, please.
ThanksThanks for the reply.
Actually I thought that the OCCI forum was for Object oriented OCI, so while I'm using C++, I'm not using the object oriented side of OCI, just using the normal OCI calls. Guess I should have been a little clearer in my original post.
But my main question really concerned the version of the client and the version of the database which you answered.
Thanks,

Hi,
If I have a OLTP DB and also a DB for Datawarehouse and I want to generate
reports on daily basis, why is it beneficial to bring the data to the datawarehouse and then generate the report and not directly from the Oltp?
I do not require any significant bulk transformation of the data.
Thanks,
MDHi there,
The answer to the question you ask very much depends upon your individual situation.
Sometimes, it is possible to do reporting directly on top of the OLTP if the reporting requirements are simple and the performance of the OLTP is not a critical factor.
However, in many organisations, the OLTP is a critical part of the function of the business and it's performance cannot be compromised by having additional users running reports. Also, most OLTP systems do not structure the data optimally for analytical type queries meaning that such queries either perform badly (and therefore effect the performance of the OLTP even more), or cannot be performed at all.
Datawarehouses and OLAP cubes do structure the data optimally for analytic query meaning the performance and range of functions available are greatly improved.
Take a look at this Wiki entry for more background

You should really consider doing the load using a data load rule. If that isn't the problem, it may be that you are having a real performance problem. If you are moving enough data to require a half hour load, it should be probably be loaded from a text file, or even a spreadsheet, using a data load rule. Text file loads are a bit better than excel, especially when there are formatting issues. <BR><BR>Lock and sends are fine for changing parameters and doing adjustments, but heavy duty data loads really work a lot better with load rules.

Hello
I'm hoping that someone here might be able to help or point me in the right direction. Apologies for the long post.
Just to set the scene, I am a SQL Server DBA and have very limited experience with System Centre so please go easy on me.
At the company I am currently working they are complaining about very poor performance when running reports (any).
Quick look at the database server and CPU utilisation being a constant 90-95%, meant that you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to realise there is a problem. The instance consuming the majority of the CPU is the instance hosting the datawarehouse and in particular
a stored procedure in the DWStagingAndConfig database called Staging.GroomDwStagingData.
This stored procedure executes continually for 2 hours performing 500,000,000 reads per execution before "timing out". It is then executed again for another 2 hours etc etc.
After a bit of diagnosis it seems that the issue is either a bug or that there is something wrong with our data in that a stored procedure is stuck in an infinite loop
System Center 2012 SP1 CU2 (5.0.7804.1300)
Diagnosis details
SQL connection details
program name = SC DAL--GroomingWriteModule
set quoted_identifier on
set arithabort off
set numeric_roundabort off
set ansi_warnings on
set ansi_padding on
set ansi_nulls on
set concat_null_yields_null on
set cursor_close_on_commit off
set implicit_transactions off
set language us_english
set dateformat mdy
set datefirst 7
set transaction isolation level read committed
Store procedures executed
1. dbo.p_GetDwStagingGroomingConfig (executes immediately)
2. Staging.GroomDwStagingData (this is the procedure that executes in 2 hours before being cancelled)
The 1st stored procedure seems to return a table with the "xml" / required parameters to execute Staging.GroomDwStagingData
Sample xml below (cut right down)
<Config>
<Target>
<ModuleName>TransformActivityDim</ModuleName>
<WarehouseEntityName>ActivityDim</WarehouseEntityName>
<RequiredWarehouseEntityName>MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity</RequiredWarehouseEntityName>
<Watermark>2015-01-30T08:59:14.397</Watermark>
</Target>
<Target>
<ModuleName>TransformActivityDim</ModuleName>
<WarehouseEntityName>ActivityDim</WarehouseEntityName>
<RequiredWarehouseEntityName>MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity</RequiredWarehouseEntityName>
<ManagedTypeViewName>MTV_Microsoft$SystemCenter$Orchestrator$RunbookAutomationActivity</ManagedTypeViewName>
<Watermark>2015-01-30T08:59:14.397</Watermark>
</Target>
</Config>
If you look carefully you will see that the 1st <target> is missing the ManagedTypeViewName, which when "shredded" by the Staging.GroomDwStagingData returns the following result set
Example
DECLARE @Config xml
DECLARE @GroomingCriteria NVARCHAR(MAX)
SET @GroomingCriteria = '<Config><Target><ModuleName>TransformActivityDim</ModuleName><WarehouseEntityName>ActivityDim</WarehouseEntityName><RequiredWarehouseEntityName>MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity</RequiredWarehouseEntityName><Watermark>2015-01-30T08:59:14.397</Watermark></Target><Target><ModuleName>TransformActivityDim</ModuleName><WarehouseEntityName>ActivityDim</WarehouseEntityName><RequiredWarehouseEntityName>MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity</RequiredWarehouseEntityName><ManagedTypeViewName>MTV_Microsoft$SystemCenter$Orchestrator$RunbookAutomationActivity</ManagedTypeViewName><Watermark>2015-01-30T08:59:14.397</Watermark></Target></Config>'
SET @Config = CONVERT(xml, @GroomingCriteria)
SELECT
ModuleName = p.value(N'child::ModuleName[1]', N'nvarchar(255)')
,WarehouseEntityName = p.value(N'child::WarehouseEntityName[1]', N'nvarchar(255)')
,RequiredWarehouseEntityName =p.value(N'child::RequiredWarehouseEntityName[1]', N'nvarchar(255)')
,ManagedTypeViewName = p.value(N'child::ManagedTypeViewName[1]', N'nvarchar(255)')
,Watermark = p.value(N'child::Watermark[1]', N'datetime')
FROM @Config.nodes(N'/Config/*') Elem(p)
/* RESULTS - NOTE THE NULL VALUE FOR ManagedTypeViewName
ModuleName WarehouseEntityName RequiredWarehouseEntityName ManagedTypeViewName Watermark
TransformActivityDim ActivityDim MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity NULL 2015-01-30 08:59:14.397
TransformActivityDim ActivityDim MTV_System$WorkItem$Activity MTV_Microsoft$SystemCenter$Orchestrator$RunbookAutomationActivity 2015-01-30 08:59:14.397
When the procedure enters the loop to build its dynamic SQL to delete relevant rows from the inbound schema tables it concatenates various options / variables into an executable string. However when adding a NULL value to a string the entire string becomes
NULL which then gets executed.
Whilst executing "EXEC(NULL)" would cause SQL to throw an error and be caught, executing the following doesnt
DECLARE @null_string VARCHAR(100)
SET @null_string = 'hello world ' + NULL
EXEC(@null_string)
SELECT @null_string
So as it hasnt caused an error the next part of the procedure is to move to the next record and this is why its caught in an infinite loop
DELETE @items WHERE ManagedTypeViewName = @View
The value for the variable @View is the ManagedTypeViewName which is NULL, as ANSI_NULLS are set to ON in the connection and not overridded in the procedure then the above statement wont delete anything as it needs to handle NULL values differently (IS NULL),
so we are now stuck in an infinite loop executing NULL for 2 hours until cancelled.
I amended the stored procedure and added the following line before the loop statement which had the desired effect and "fixed" the performance issue for the time being
DELETE @items WHERE ManagedTypeViewName IS NULL
I also noticed that the following line in dbo.p_GetDwStagingGroomingConfig is commented out (no idea why as no notes in the procedure)
--AND COALESCE(i.ManagedTypeViewName, j.RelationshipTypeViewName) IS NOT NULL
There are obviously other ways to mitigate the dynamic SQL string being NULL, there's more than one way to skin a cat and thats not why I am asking this question, but what I am concerned about is that is there a reason that the xml / @GroomingCriteria is incomplete
and / or that the procedures dont handle potential NULL values.
I cant find any documentation, KBs, forum posts of anyone else having this issue which somewhat surprises me.
Would be grateful of any help / advice that anyone can provide or if someone can look at their 2 stored procedures on a later version to see if it has already been fixed. Or is it simply that we have orphaned data, this is the bit that concerns most as I dont
really want to be deleting / updating data when I have no idea what the knock on effect might be
Many many thanks
AndyFirst thing I would do is upgrade to 2012 R2 UR5. If you are running non-US dates you need the UR5 hotfix also.

Hi Everyone,
I am really stuck at a point from where I do not know which route to take. I am trying to install OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.5) on my Windows 7 (32-bit) laptop. I have tried all the options:
1. Simple Install
2. Enterprise Install
3. Software only install (after installing Weblogic 10.3.4.0 separately)
Everything goes well till the step Bi Configuration->Creating Domain.
In this process whenever it reaches the stage when it tries to start Node Manager, it starts getting java exceptions and fails. It typically occurs when it does not find the nodemanager.properties file and tries to save the configurations there. It then encounters a Fatal Error.

After this it hangs for a long time before finally coming up with Node Manager Server Timed Out error and finally the Creating Domain step fails.
One thing that I have noticed is that whenever it tries to create the nodemanager.properties or write to it it encounters this error and hence the nodemanager.properties file is also not getting generated.
I have ensured that there are no spaces in the TEMP and TMP paths. I even tried creating and putting the nodemanager.properties file in the location but that too does not work.
Strange part is that when I install Weblogic separately and have nodemanager as a windows service, then with the nodemanager.properties that I created the windows service runs, but the OBIEE installation still fails.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and regards,
SubhoMy problem is "creating domain is failed". I guess that the issue with windows 7 32 bits on laptop doesn't configure and run nodemanager. I tried to start nodemanager but don't work (with weblogic scriptinf tools WST). However, Weblogic run ok but nodemanager is inactive. Also it doesn't create nodemanager.propierties. If I create a file nodemanager.properties (or I copied on directory obiee_home\ws_server_10.3\common\nodemanager) obiee installer configures its parameters pre-configured (if I modify a parameter, the installer modify it a default value and I don't know where is these parameters and its definition).
I have installed obiee simple and enterprise and it don't work. I have installed on oracle 11g R2 (desktop and enterprise with datawarehouse) and obiee installer doesn't work. Further this installation obiee delay an hour and then generates error in my case "creating domain is failed".
I'm going try to run install obiee 11.1.1.5 on windows 7 xp mode.
Important: We need help of oracle experts or Oracle communicates if obiee installs or not on windows 7 32 bits laptop because We have wasted
