Date axis and trendlines

CA Forum: Charts and Graphs
I have a report that shows a number of aggregated data values with drill-down, with subreports that display month-by-month data at that drill-down level that include line charts showing several of the values, each of which has a trendline. The problem is that the horizontal axis displays the month values as 'monthnumber/year', i.e., '10/2006'. I can force the axis labels into a more readable format by going into Chart Options to the Axes tab and selecting 'Show Time Scale' under 'Show Group Axes', then clicking on one of the axis labels, selecting 'Format Axis Labels', and picking the 'Feb-02' format. I can also do this by going to the Chart Expert, selecting Numeric Axis as the type with 'Date axis line chart' as the subtype, then doing the same 'Format Axis Labels' change. The problem is that, when I do this, the trendlines become brain-dead, turning into a horizontal line across the chart well away from the actual data line. Is there some way to get the data axis labels to show in the 'mmm-yy' format while still having trendlines function properly? The main report has a dynamic parameter to allow the viewer to select which fiscal year of data they want to view, so hard-coding the axis labels as specific strings is not a viable option.

I'm sorry. Perhaps I wasn't clear. I am interested in having a graph that looks like yours (numbers on Y and dates on X), but I want to display the equation (y= Ax+B) of the trendline. R^2 seems to work fine with an axis with date values, but if I try to display the equation I get the text "Equation couldn't be calculated because one or both axes have data values." on my graph instead of the equation. KOENIG Yvan's solution is helpful in that it allows me to have an equation, but as far as I can see, I lose my date axis (X just becomes 1, 2, 3,... instead of 1/1, 1/2, 1/3...). I am hoping there is a more elegant solution than placing the two graphs on top of one another.
Also, is there a way to find the trendline for only a few points of a series without making a new series of those few points?
Thank you!

  • SSAS2008 r2 and Excel Line Chart and Date Axis

    Hi
    Excel 2010. SSAS 2008 R2
I have a excel line chart made out from SSAS pivot table with a date dimension (date) and No of licences.
Currently, it displays 1/Jun/2014 to 30/Jun/2015 (FY2015) and this looks really ugly.
While keeping the details, I'd like to display by Month-Year.
However, while I can do this with other normal excel data, I just can not do it with SSAS Pivot table.
Under Axis options, I ticked 'Date axis' but it won't bring up date options.
I think I tried everything but just can not figure it out. I wonder if it is even possible.
Th date dimension is recognised as date because I can apply date filter.  I want to make it neat. Can anyone help me with this please?
    It must be 'Date' Level.
    Kind regards

    Hi SQLMa,
Could you please elaborate more detail regarding the "Date" dimension structure? In order to display the date format with Month-Year, we should build a hierarchy to organize the granularity of date dimension at SSAS level. Please

  • OBIEE 11G: Can I set limit on number of ticks only on horizontal axis and zoom in if I want to?

    Hello
Is there a way I can restrict the total number of ticks on horizontal axis only? Say I want to set it to show only 24 ticks on horizontal axis. I am putting date and hour on the horizontal axis, if I take 3 dates of data, I will have 3X24 = 72 ticks on the chart, but I want the chart to show only 24 ticks. So it's pretty much ticks for 3 hours on the horizontal chart in this case.
    Can this be done?
Second, if the first can be done, then can I then zoom in to any ticks on the horizontal axis, and it would show be the break down of this ticks, which is made up with 3 hour's performance separately?
    Thanks

The zooming feature was ok, but what if I want to zoom in on just a specific area between the ticks when only 1 click?
    Any thoughts?

  • Split Data File and Compare Events

    Hi All,
I'm pretty new to DiAdem and the community so I apologize if this has been answered.
The data file I am working with is a vehicle field test and I would like to compare events throughout a single data file events highlighted by the flagged section of the attached picture.  I figured out how to flag and copy the data but I am wondering if there is an easier way to make the data line up without iteratively calculating it?  I'd like to do this without a script to be able to investigate these events before an analysis script is finalized.  Ideally I would like to select a second X-axis and slide it so the copied data lines up with the original.

Waveform data contains x-part and the y-part of a curve in one channel. The other way of storing data is having the x-data and y-data in separate channels. Based on your description, I think you have two channels of data, correct? When copying the data using the flags, there should be a copy of the x-data and a copy of the y-data.  From the picture, it looks like the y-data is being plotted against the original x-data and not against the copied x-data. To plot the copied x-data and the copied y-data:
    Select the x-data copy
Hold down the control (Ctrl) key
Select the y-data copy. This will pair the copy together.
    Release the Ctrl key.
Then you can drag and drop the seletced pair of copied data onto the View pane, as I did in my image above. You should not have to perform analysis to shift the data over time if you use this method.

  • How to create a chart using x-y correlation line plotting and trendline?

    Hi everyone,
I am a college student and I opted to use iWork instead Microsoft Office, which has been wonderful software until this semester (iWork '08). Currently, I am taking some science classes, which requires me to graph simple function using "excel"; since I have Numbers, I attempted to graph my homework using such software. However, it was a little disappointing because I could not find x-y correlation line plotting, trendline, or simple curve fitting in Numbers.
Is Numbers able to graph in such way? If yes, what is the best approach to find such tools?
Any help will be truly appreciated.

Plotting a function, eg y = 2x^2 + 3x + 2 or similar, in numbers or excel / appleworks / open office is not directly possible. The indirect way to do it is to build a spreadsheet put the values of x in one column and the formula to calculate the values of y in another and use these two columns to produce a chart. As you are plotting the function via calculated data (rather than trying to find a relationship by plotting observed data) trend line or curve fitting seems unnecessary.
You can plot observed data and produce a scatter chart in Numbers, but it will not produce a trendline for you. You could calculate the parameters of the trendline, there are a number of shareware products that will do this. See http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/mathscience/indexabc.html. Once you calculate the trendline you could use the technique described above to plot it.
You can plot a function directly using Grapher which lives in the Utilities folder. It can also be used to plot data sets and do simple curve fitting.
Hope this helps, but as always to solve a problem you have to clearly define it first.

  • Line graph date sorting and formatting

    Hi Gurus
We've recently upgraded to 11.1.1.7 and noticed that our Publisher line charts with date on the x-axis are no longer sorting correctly i.e. May comes before March. The reason for this is because in <11.1.1.7 we have a formatted date mask (to_char) in our data model but sorted by the underlying canonical date which worked. Now in 11.1.1.7 it is no longer sorting by the data model sort but by the formatted date string therefore numeric values of 30 April sorted after 1 May.
We have tried a number of options to resolve:
    1. using the canonical date and sorting on that corrects the sort problem but the default formatting used in long YYYY-MM-DDT00:00:00-00:00 and not readable as our chart is showing daily totals. Changing to time-series chart can allow you to format the date but see problem 2 next...
    2. Time series = yes doesn't display the chart if we have a number of entities in our series i.e. multiple lines and the interactive viewer shows a red error icon. I think this may be due to the fact that our date range is not continuous ie we have a sparse data set.
    3. Workaround we used was a bar chart (our users preference is line charts) with time series = false but the date format is still long.
Any advice / suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Nick.

for #1: numbers does what is called a "stable" sort. Meaning that the previous sort order is preserved. i.e. do your sort in reverse order. Amount, then name, then date. Just did it with sample data and it was perfect. It keeps them in the original order, so if there is a match in name after you sort, you should see the amount still in the proper order.
#2: What in your formula isnt working? I just made a formula that did math on the columns to the left, sorted and it worked. Sorted by static data columns and the formula column. I know it was broken originally, years ago, but it seems to be working correctly now, at least in my quick test. You might have an issue if you are using formulas that refer to data on other rows or tables.
#3: yeah formatting can be a pain. But it is easier to do in the desktop program. No, you cannot get it for windows, sorry. If the formatting the only thing you need to do on the desktop side, then i dont see much tying you to it. I do 90% or more on the ipad and iphone now.

  • Is that possible to set up a multiple y-axis and single x-axis in one waveformchart (in LabVIEW 8.0)?

    Hello!
Is that possible to set up a multiple y-axis and single x-axis in one waveform chart using LabVIEW 8.0?
Because I need to display several channels in the same chart, if one channel has a very big data range and the others not, the channels with smaller data range will not be displayed very clear.

  • Add label on y-axis and x-axis in excel using Report Generation toolkit

    Hello,
I want to add label in x-axis(Date/Time) and y-axis(Temperature O=oC)
There are only header and data array connection, how can i add label to the chart?
    Thank you.

    Hello,
The way I've done this is by specifying the string inputs named "Column Header" and "Row Header" on the Excel Insert Graph.vi. This should provide the axis labels that you specify on your graph.

  • Charts data axis scaling problem

    Post Author: rameshp
    CA Forum: Charts and Graphs
    Hi ,
I work on crystal reports XI.
I'm facing problem regarding scaling data axis. I have illustrated that in the following lines:
case1) if i have high values (sum of bytes) like more than 600 etc. its scaling data axis from 0 to say 1000.
case 2) if i have low values like 0,1 (bytes)   then its scaling from -4 to say 6 .
I don't want negative values on data axis .  I want from 0 to max. So what's the better way to do this using chart expert.
Your suggestion is highly appreciated !
    Thanks,
    Ramesh.

    satwar,
There is no "trick", we're just victims of the limitation that WebI has in portraying XYZ type charts to our better liking.  I submitted a request to Business Objects Tech Support in Oct 2006 and became the proud holder of two ADAPTs:
ADAPT00676587 u2013 for the scaling issueADAPT00676609 u2013 for the stacked bar chart, line graph issue
When fully implemented, the scaling for Y and Z should be able to correspond to each other.  For instance, max value of Y and max value of Z will set on both scales the same max value.  I don't discourage you from submitting a trouble-ticket, perhaps if they get more noise on this situation they'll resolve my (our) ADPAT sooner, but just hoping....

  • CR in VS2005: Line Chart Date Axis

I believe this is posted in correct place:
I have line chart that is displaying daily data.  I want to display a month worth of data with each day's data point plotted.
The X axis is a system.datetime of the day for the data (actually group label); I have formatted this to mm/dd/yyyy in the format editor. My graph X axis labels are overwritting each other and I can not see how to 'scale' x axis labels to prevent this.
In reviewing similar existing posts I see reference to options that do not appear to be available in Net VS2005 (recently updated CR and VS).
Is this limitation of VS version of CR or am I doing something wrong ?
    Thank You, fd

Thank You for your reply.  I belive that I may still be limited by version in visual studio 2005 (CR updated to 10.2.3600).
When I right click on any object in graph I am presented with list 'Format Object' (border of chart, keep object togeather, etc), 'Chart Expert' (very limited selections: show grid, title text, etc) and 'Chart Options' (again very limited selections: Template,General,Titles,Grid). In the grid section chart options there is indeed a "data axis", "numbers" formatting section that allows for formatting as date but not any alignment etc.
I am not adverse to purchasing an added CR designer but would like to clearly understand advantages.  It is also of concern that this "date" x axis should be treated as an x-y plot rather than the dates being used simply as labels.

  • Date Axis Stacked Area Charts

    Hi,
I'm just evaluating the full version of Crystal Reports 2008 having had some frustrations with the design restrictions in the basic version that ships with Visual Studio 2008. Particularly important to me is the design features for charting data. A lot of the charts I need to build have daily data points and the dates for these data points are represented as labels on the X axis. My problem has been that when you try and build a report with several months or more worth of data points the X axis is getting way too crowded even to the extent of being unreadable with overlapping labels. I've noticed in the full version that there is a date axis chart type whereby you can alter the scale of the X axis e.g. to only show a date at a frequency once per month or greater resulting in the X axis being readable. This seems to work great for line charts etc, however one of the charts I need is a stacked area chart and unfortunately I can find no options / chart types that allow me to scale the dates on the X axis. I've seen there is a date axis chart for area charts, but there is no option of having this chart type as stacked. I know you can also skip data labels in X axis group options, but the max I can skip is 2 and so that doesn't really help me either.
Is there any way of achieving a stacked area chart with a scaled date axis in Crystal Reports 2008? If not it seems to me that the lack of this feature is a real omission from the product. Even Excel charts can handle this type of chart and I would imagine Crystal Reports charts should be more advanced in its charting capabilities.
Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
    Kind Regards,
    Mark

I have run in to the same problem.  I work for a systems integration company and I purchased this software because I have a lot of crystal reports and .NET experience but I have very minimal crystal chart experience.  I need to use the charting to display data over time collections.  I need to show all data points collected but for some series that I deal with I need to be able to scale the x-axis labels to something that is legible.  There is an aftermarket package(CRReports3.5) for $500 more dollars that would enable me to control this but it seems like alot more money for a small piece of functionality that should already be built in.  I have Crystal Reports 2008 and am working with visual studio 2008 can someone please tell me is there ANY WAY to achieve this functionality without purchasing additional software?  Otherwise this software purchase was worthless for my current project.

  • Date Axis in Charts

I've seen the thread that says Numbers does not support a chart with a date axis. That is, a chart derived from a table that has a date column with dates irregularly spaced in time.
For example, here's a table of visits to a supermarket and the price of Wheaties on each visit:
    DATE PRICE
    8/12/90 $3.50
    8/14/90 $3.60
    9/2/92 $4.30
    6/4/94 $4.00
Right now, if you turn this into a chart, you get a graph with each data point paced equally apart. Useless. What you want is a chart with an x-axis that's a date range, with each data point plotted at the appropriate point along that range.
I'm surprised that Apple doesn't support this feature. So, two questions.
    1. Anyone know if this is in the pipeline for the next version of Numbers? I'm ready to chuck Excel, but this is a show-stopper for me. Can't switch without this feature. Anyone know when the next version is due?
    2. Anyone know any reasonable workarounds?
    Thanks.

    Hello
    You wrote:
    +<ponders>Now why did I purchase iWork'08?</ponders>+
    I really don't understand why.
You had a 30 days free trial version giving enough time to see if the app was fitting your needs.
But don't worry, it appears that you are numerous to do that.
To be back to the app itself, it appears that the choices ruling dates are not perfectly consistent.
For some aspects they looks like strings, for others, they look like numbers.
I was acustomed to dates being a number displaid as a dateString.
For instance, if a cell contains 37995 in an AW spreadsheet, when I give it the date format, it is displaid as: 10/01/2008 (I am using a French system).
In Numbers it's not exactly that and I can't get it displaying 37995 as a date.
In fact I knows, but it requires an AppleScript.
If someone found a way to do that with Numbers's functions, I am interested.

  • Incompatibility axis and oracle libraries

    Hi,
I have built an application with JDeveloper 10.1.3.4. Include several Web Services Clients generated with JDeveloper. Besides, I have to include a several "jars" to realize an invocation to axis web service. These "jar" posses an embedded Web Service client axis.
I have read that a single application (EAR) cannot contain one Web service that uses Axis, and another that uses Oracle. Specifically, an Axis Web service calling out to another Web service via a Web services client created using JAX-RPC implementation is not support.
    http://oracledoc.boyko.biz/web.1013/b14433/opensrc.htm
    The problematic classes are:
    Oracle Axis
    jaxrpc-api.jar jax-rpc.jar
    saaj-api.jar saaj.jar
    orawsdl.jar wsdl4j-1.5.1.jar
In JDeveloper, I have not included the jar from axis (jax-rpc.jar, saaj.jar, wsdl4j-1.5.1.jar) and the application realize all invocations (Oracle an Axis) in a right way.
When I deploy de application in OAS 10.1.2 or OAS 10.1.3.4, application fails in any invocation. I have tested several posibilities but at the end deployed application failed.
    a) Including only "jaxrpc-api.jar", "saaj-api.jar", "orawsdl.jar"
    b) Including only "jax-rpc.jar", "saaj.jar", "wsdl4j-1.5.1.jar"
    c) The six jars (axis and oracle)
¿Could you say me as the way to avoid this problem in an OAS? ¿Why runs perfectly in JDeveloper althoug I haven't set the jar required by axis?
