DateTimeFunc - usable outside Livecycle?

I came across this class the other day as it seems to offer functionality useful to me. However its in the com.adobe.fiber.runtime.lib package, which I was unaware of. The comment in help says:
"The DateTimeFunc class defines the implementations of the expression runtime functions for Date and Time functions in the Adobe application modeling language."
So I'm guessing this has something to do with data modelling authoring wizards. Seems a bit odd that an Adobe authored Actionscript class that could add very useful functionality to Date such as dateDiff() is hidden away in this backwater. Is this stuff usable by mere mortal Flex developers? Is the source available anywhere, or is it compiled into some LC swc? I'm probably going to have to implement a dateDiff and some other utils to make Date more useful, but don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Unfortunately HP charges an ridiculous price [$65 USD] for example for stronger power cord and large plug with fuse that can be used in the UK/Ireland and SIngapore. If you go onto the HP Parts website you'll see all the different power cords ... but you can't order them online you have to call in the US 1-800-227-8164 with the parts number and your computer information]. I'll use my old Dell laptop overseas - they only charged $15 w/shipping for a UK power cord.

HP mini 1010NR not usable outside US!

I recently bought a mini notebook model 1010NR. I read the couple of sentences in the manual about international use which were totally ambiguous but seemed to suggest that it was usable elsewhere. Having now brought it to France, I just inquired online about plugging it in here and was informed via Chat (i.e. HP robot) that it requires a voltage converter in areas with 220v current. These cost about 50 euros/$70 here, plus they are extra weight and inconvenience to lug around.
Is there really no other way to use mini notebooks in countries with 220volt current? Can't I just buy a 220v power cord to connect the power supply to the AC/DC box?Why is HP not more upfront about this, given that it's completely normal to switch the voltage when you take other computers to 220volt areas? I could have plugged it in and fried the whole thing.

Calling third party process from webservice

Hi there!
A client would like us to build a process, actualy a webservice, to generate PDF documents based on XML files generated by a process outside LiveCycle.
For us this outside process is just a black box that will deliver XML files to be consumed by the process we will build in Workbench.
This is where I get lost - how do I invoke an outside process and then start my process to get the XML and create the PDF?
Can I design this in Workbench itself or will I need to use some alternative way?

I have a 17" MacBook Pro and do lots of movie editing. I need a fast external hard drive option to use. My internal is totally used up. Also need a back up drive.
I am a newbie and all of my info is based on googling. My FIRST QUESTION: Can I, and would it be a good solution, to use an express card 34 such as, Sonnet Tempo or Firtek SeriTek/2sM2-E with an external hard drive such as SeaGate 500GB or 300GB.
QUESTION 2: Why do so many of the SATA hard drives come without a case or enclosure?
And QUESTION 3: Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with the express card/34 and SATA external hard drives.

1. Yes, eSATA would be a good choice for an external enclosure with a SATA drive. Alternatively, you could use Firewire 800, but it's mostly a matter of choice.
2. SATA drives a primarily used in desktop machines. SATA capable enclosures have made them usable outside of desktops.
3. I can tell you from experience to get an enclosure with a good chipset. It makes all the difference in the world. Oxford is very good for firewire. Cypress AT2+ and Prolific 3507 are excellent for USB 2.0.

Is there an easy way to save a form as a non-editable PDF?

Is there something like 'save as non-form PDF' in Acrobat PRO? I have a form which I want to use and then save as something that does not have editable fields, just plain PDF. Preferably some way that does not include complex stuff, because if that is the case, I'd rather just create a word processing document from which I can crank out print to PDF.
I must add: I tried "Sanitize document" but that turns the content of the pages into pixel-based images and that is not what I want.

If your base content is in a Word Doc or RTF file, you can use OpenOffice.org Write to add form fields to the document and the you can export as PDF and the created PD will contain the form fields.
With the additional of iPxd, tablets, and smart phones and viewer apps the possablity of the end user not being able to-in the form or have the form work as expected has increased.
As for Apple Preview, there is script to fix the viewable PDF. Exporting the data a to an FDF, XFDF, etc should still be possible.

Performance comparisons between POF & open source serialization mechanism?

I'm curious whether anyone has done any comparisons of performance and serialized object sizes between POF and open source mechanisms such as Google Protocol Buffers and Thrift, both of which seem to be becoming quite popular. Personally, I dislike having to write a separate schema and then generate classes from it, which Protocol Buffers and Thrift require you to do, and I vastly prefer POF's mechanism of keeping everything in the code (although I wish the POF annotation framework was officially supported). But aside from that, I'd prefer to use Coherence for many of the purposes that some of my co-workers are currently using other solutions for, and this would be useful information to have in making the case.
FWIW, I hope someone at Oracle is seriously considering open-sourcing POF. I don't think that anyone who would've bought a Coherence license would decide not to because they could get POF for free. They'd just go and use something else, like the aforementioned Protocol Buffers and Thrift. Not only are many companies adopting these as standards, but as has been mentioned in other threads on this forum, that's exactly what even some Coherence users are doing:

I really wish I could to encourage developers that I work with to give POF a look as an alternative to those two (both of which we're currently using), regardless of whether or not they plan on using Coherence in the immediate future. As things stand right now, I can't use Coherence for code that needs to be shared with people in other groups who haven't adopted Coherence yet. But if I could use POF outside of Coherence, it would probably be acceptable to those folks as a generic serialization mechanism, and it would make migrating such code to Coherence at some point down the road that much easier. If, on the other hand, I have to write that code around, say, Protocol Buffers, then it becomes much harder to later justify creating and maintaining POF as a second serialization mechanism for the same set of objects, which means it's much harder to justify using Coherence for those objects.
In short, making POF usable outside of Coherence, and who knows, maybe even getting it supported in popular open source projects such as Cassandra (which, as I understand it, uses Thrift) would make it easier to adopt Coherence in environments where objects are already persisted in other systems.

Complex Tag Question?

I want to write a BodyTag that will contain both HTML and other JSP tags. I want the JSP tags within this tag to handle themselves and have the HTML stuff simply pass through.
For example:

</cc:form>In this example the custom form tag would render an HTML form tag and some hidden HTML elements. I would then want the table, tr, td tags etc. to pass through as they are. The custom text tag would render a specific input HTML tag, the submit button would passthrough and the closing custom form tag would close the form.
Is is possible to do this? I've had success doing BodyTags where all the enclosed content was JSP or all enclosed content was passthrough HTML.

Well it's not default behaviour from what I've seen in the past: Available options are:
1. Empty - there can be no body.
2. JSP - all content runs through the JSP compiler. Non-jsp content is ignored. At least that's what I get in my tags.
3. Tagdependent - all content is handled through the tag handler.
I need to be able to use the tags nested inside my new form tags to be usable outside a custom form tag. That's why I have them totally responsible for themselves. But when within a custom form tag, I need to be able to provide some standard html (basically table and related tags) mixed with the JSP tags.
If this is a situation where my tag is supposed to capture all body content and then determine itself whether it's JSP or HTML, I'd be glad to know how to do that as well. Meaning what do I do if I come across HTML, just pass it to the response stream? Then when I encounter a custom tag how do I forward that to the JSP compiler?
Any help would be appreciated.
I may be re-inventing the wheel, but the kinds of things I'm trying to do are pretty simple and don't require all the other STRUTS overhead. I am that Java programmer that spent years using Notepad and the javac command line compiler before finally switching to an IDE. If I was going to go to a complete framework like struts, I'd probably choose Tapestry or even make the jump to JSF.

Dissapearing text in forms

I have noticed that, on many occassions, my text will dissapear from my forms and I have to click on those text fields (now empty) to get text to reappear (this typically happens when going into Preview mode, but can happen if I save the form and view it outside Livecycle).
I found a fix for this a while back, but have since had to reinstally everything on a new system (and subsequently can't remember what I did). It had something to do with a simple configuration setting in LiveCycle (but definatly not a scripting project) <Grin>... Can anyone help?

It is not possible to ommit pages when exporting. One thing that you can try that might be useful is in the View Responses Tab print the Detail View of the row instead (File > Detail View. The print button is at the bottom of the the detail view).
This will not print the instructional text but only the field/value pairs.
This will print all the text per field (no need to scroll to see the full text of a long value)

When ingesting footage via Prelude...

...are all changes made upon ingest, e.g. metadata, markers, etc, included in the results of transcodes done during ingest?
My concern is about handing-off footage to others: should I hand-off only trancoded footage? orignal footage from the camera?
What if I'm passing footage to a non-Adobe user?
I'm just starting out w/CS6 after using only CS2 since its' release, and admittely find Prelude a bit confuseing.

When I record, I (now) do so in AVCHD using a Panasonic HMC-150. I often end up with between 100 and 200 short (approx 30 seconds in length), but individual clips (1 clip per competitior) that I want to transcode and upload to a few web sites, and which I later use to edit and author DVDs. So, I'm looking at uncompressing/transcoding from AVCHD format to an editable format, then converting/transcoding the edited footage to.mp4, .flv, and .mpeg2 (and in the future, BD).
A reminder that I'm coming from the world of CS2 Production Premium, and am trying to grasp how Prelude might help me in a situation where I have so many "unrelated" clips.
I think (maybe) this should be my (perhaps too-detailed) work flow:
Step 1:
record with camera to SD card >
Step 2:
SD card into computer >
Step 3:
Copy/backup/protect SD card to HDDs >
Step 4:
Create Prelude project
Step 5:
Ingest from HDD to Prelude >
Step 6:
Log and add metadata >

These are my questions/points of confusion:
1) Is the metadata I add in Step 6 also included in the results I get from Step 7? And, does the metadata stay with that result for use in/with/by the other applications within Production Premium CS6? (I've read the FAQs, and just seem particularly dense about how Prelude might help me when I have a relatively large number of unique "unrelated" clips; it seems Prelude is more suited to projects with a large number of related clips, i.e. making a documentary, a short, or a feature-lenght film.
2) I know this probably isn't specific to Prelude, but is the metadata usable outside of the Adobe Prod Premium apps? For example, if I add a rider/competitor's name as metadata, can that metadata item be used/accessed from within HTML coding of my web page(s)? (See the rider's name appear when you "mouseover" the numbers shown in the link I provided above).
3) Is "ingesting" to Prelude really just a way to "link" or otherwise indicate that a Prelude "project" is comprised of specific source clips?
I realize that at least question 2 is probably not within the bounds of what Prelude does or was designed/intended to do, and sincere apologies for that, but I'm beginning to think Prelude may not be very helpful in the specific circumstances I have in mind unless I can access the metadata via HTML or some other web-page coding vehicle. (Am I trying to pound a square peg into a round hole)?

No Audio In QuickTime File After Tape Capture

I have been using Premiere CS6 to capture some old tapes through a Matrox MXO2 unit. The video and audio is playable through Premiere but isn’t available in other applications, particularly Quicktime Player. Quicktime shows that the format is 24 bit integer (Little Endian), but no audio plays outside Premiere or after converting to other formats in Adobe Media Encoder. The video is fine regardless of whatever codec I use to capture (tried Prores, DV and Uncompressed), but no audio is usable outside Premiere.
This is the error message I get when I try to open a captured file outside Premiere.
“Additional software is required for QuickTime to playback this media. It may be available from the QuickTime Components page”
I’ve been in contact with Matrox tech support and they have no answers. I’ve posted Apple’s Quicktime forum and had no feedback. I’m just wondering at this point if any Premiere users have run into issues like this capturing from tape sources.

Exporting these files to other formats like H.264 also creates a file without playable audio.
Having access to the files in a common format like Quicktime is essential to this project as they will be accessed later by people who don't have access to Premiere.
I have captured through Matrox's very inadequate basic capture tool and gotten files with sound, but cannot use that application because it lacks device control, batch capturing capability and timecode support. It made me wonder if the problem is somewhere in Premiere's side of the capture process.

Struts, beans, and unique IDs

I'm trying to capture info from a web form using Struts, and I have a ActionForm (bean?) for that. When submitted (or instantiated - I don't know the details of how or when exactly it's being created), I want that bean to somehow get assigned a uniqueID so I could locate it easily in a database later.
Where and when should I be doing this? Is it in the action class after the form has been submitted that I should assign ID to the bean (bean.setID(generatedInt); - but that's not good practice, I think), or inside the bean in its constructor? Or maybe there's a simple and clean way Struts can do this?
And generally, is there good info on how and when the bean is being created by Struts? From Struts docs I got an idea of a bean representing a form through which the data is being submitted. Is this so?

There are beans and then there are beans. They are used for many purposes.
Struts ActionForm beans are used to gather together and validate the data from a JSP page (or some other view) and present it to the Action. Those are the beans they were probably talking about in the struts docs.
Your business logic for the most part should be stored in different beans from these ActionForm beans.
Database properties don't always correspond directly to all the fields on a form and vice versa. The whole point is that these business beans are your model - they should not in any way be affected by the view.
On assigning Ids - my approach would be to have it in your business layer, rather than in the action class. That would mean that the beans could be usable outside of struts. Each individual class should be responsible for getting its id - ideally the first time it is saved.

How do you insert an equation in a structured doc using DITA 1.2?

I'm currently in the process of structuring a set of unstructured user manuals using FM10 and the DITA 1.2 standard. I have my conversion table and templates setup and everything has been going well so far, but I can't figure out how to structure equations or insert new equations into a structured doc.
FrameMaker flags equations as an unsupported element (see below) no matter where the equation appears in the map.
I've looked through my element catalogue, but I can't find anything that seems like it would support an equation.
In some of my research, I've stumbled across something called a mathML element, but that doesn't seem to be an available option for me. Is this something that's only available if you are using DITA specialization?
If anyone has any ideas for how I can insert equations into my doc while keeping it inline with the DITA 1.2 standards, it would be greatly appreciated!

Framemaker handles equations in a special way that is not supported by DITA out-of-the-box (DITA relies on MathML).
The only format that allows equations round-trip to XML and back to Frame is MIF (Maker Interchange Format) if the equations must be editable by FM's equation editor. This basically means that equations must be handled the same way frame graphics are handled and that requires some DITA spesialisation work.

If you have a requirement that these equations should be usable outside FM environment, things get complicated. Framemaker can write equations out as graphics files instead of MIF, gif for example, but the equations cannot be edited any longer in Frame. It cannot write both during XML save.
The ultimate solution would a special XML writer/reader that would store both the MIF rendition and graphic rendition into a spesialised equation-element and let applications use either of them. Or that someone would create equation-MIF <-> MathML converter..
We've done a few customer projects where XML content authoring keeps equations as MIF files and publishing, for example, to web writes out equations as graphics.

Compare 2 XML Docs using JAXB

I use JAXB for parsing and generating XML docs. It works well after some time to learn to use it.
But now I want compare 2 xml docs.
I think the equal function is the right way, but I can't find any implementation from this function in the generated classes.
Do I look right? Is it possible to compare xml docs with JAXB?
Any other hints.

Earlier this year, I needed such a tool and finally wrote one after not being able to find one. It was a lot of work. It compared two DOM documents.
In our case, we were testing a new server implementation to create XML result files from requests from our client. I connected to a new server and an old server and sent the identical input to both. I then validated the two results using DTD's (which is all we had) and then did a brute force comparison of the two Document objects.
To make things more difficult, there were some known differences. The new version returned a few new tags and attributes in certain cases. I had to avoid using these as a reason to declare a mismatch. Also, there were timestamps and URLs returned in the files I was processing, so I had to ignore these tags as well.
Another thing to consider is that attributes do not have to be presented in any sequence, so I had to compare in a non-order-specific way. I built two HashMaps, and first looked up each old attribute in the HashMap for new attributes. If I found a match, I removed this attribute from BOTH HashMaps, when I got to the end, anything lef t over in either HashMap was an orphan.
It was a lot of work, and my solution is probably not usable outside of its environment, and I don't have permission to release the source anyway.

X sessions - lost?

I have been using xdm for some time and now I decided to make use of stored sessions.
But I cannot find any xsm (x session manager). There are some for particular desktop environments (xfce, lxde,...), but xsm has disappeared.
What is the best alternative to xsm (light, no heavy deps)? Or will xsm come back?
Does anyone use session management without those heavy DE?

Lxsession is supposed to be usable outside of the whole lxde environment. Lxsession-lite saves/restores only a single session. Lxsession (non-lite), if it's available, is supposed to let you have multiple sessions saved at once, and pick between them when restoring.
