DAW (Logic Pro, Reason etc) distorting iTunes, Safari etc

This is a problem that seems to be related to the control of the audio clock/sample rate within core audio.  Here's the scenario:
I have a DAW (I get the same problem whether the DAW is the latest version of Logic Pro, or Reason, so I'm therefore confident it's not just a Logic Pro problem) running.  There isn't a difference whether there's a project/file open within the DAW or not.  Simply by having a DAW running when I try to play audio from iTunes, or Spotify, or Soundcloud or any internet based audio such as YouTube it's distorted.  It kind of sounds like the audio is being run through a mild to medium strength Bit Crusher.
Only if I quit the DAW can I listen to audio from any other program without the distortion.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or found a solution to it?
My audio interface is a Prism Sound Orpheus.

What sampling rate are your DAW's operating at?
Sometimes you'll get noise and 'bit crushing' distortion if the main OS X system is set at, say, 44khz and your DAW tries to switch to something like 88 or 96.
I often switch between 48 and 44 khz on my system (with MOTU audio hardware) and it USUALLY works seamlessly, but every now and then there's bit-crush effect as the system adjusts the sampling rate.  For some reason, the Mac will occasionally make the transition from one sampling rate to another veerrrrry sloooowly, as if changing speed limits with the lightest accelerator foot on the planet...   Might take a minute or two, but it SHOULD eventually arrive at the new sampling rate and the distortion goes away.
SHOULD.
hope that's helpful.   As Bee Jay said, check your audio driver (for the Prism) and see who's in control of sampling rate (ie. internal clock, external, etc.)
cheers

  • How to increase Volume in Logic Pro X without distorting?

I just recenlty converted to a MacBook Pro. I have Logic Pro X and I've noticed when I load in my Steven Slate Drummer 4, when I click on the drums they are correct volume, but playback makes them VERY quiet, along with everything else I record whether it be guitar or vocals. I NEVER had this problem with any other DAWs and I've used the same method, everyone is saying to use a Limiter, but I find this adds some distortion and makes everything sound terrible. It also barely raises the volumes, I would appreciate all help, I am currently running a home studio and I am recording several artists and really need to figure out how to make the volume normal, I've added compressors on every track to make everything a little loader but it still doesn't compare to what other DAWs put out, however spending $200 I would like to learn and continue with Logic, thanks!

That's a little odd !! Not quite sure why that wouldn't work… You have assigned your sound to the output track rather than an audio track, but that shouldn't stop it working.
On the other hand, I wouldn't have done it like that at all
I would select the midi track to convert and do a "Bounce in place".
With the default settings, Logic will create a new track with the bounce on it. You can manipulate this new bounce as you please
    Have fun

  • Help will not load in ANY Apple app (iTunes, Safari, etc)

I'm unable to load Help for any Apple application (Safari, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto, etc). I get this error message: "Help isn’t available for (name of app; Safari for example)."

Sometimes just closing and reopening the Help window will clear up the problem. Otherwise, you may need to delete the Help cache.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpd
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Move the selected folder to the Trash. Log out, log back in, and test. Help pages will be slow to load at first.
If that doesn't work, the problem may be caused by network conditions. It may go away by itself, though I can't say how long you should wait.
A persistent failure to load help data has been reported as an issue with certain ISP's, such as the Exede satellite network. Test on a different network, if possible. I've also seen at least one report that Photo Stream in iCloud can mysteriously interfere with Help. I'm not sure whether that's true, but try disabling Photo Stream, if applicable.*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select

  • Logic Pro 9 Input distortion problem

    Hey,
I'm having a lot of trouble with the inputs in logic pro 9 when recording an external instrument through my apogee duet 2.
    Here's what happens:
I connect my apogee duet 2 to the mac, and connect my external instrument through the apogee into my mac.
I launch logic pro, create external instrument, set the midi, then click "input 1-2".
As soon as I click "input 1-2" I get this weird white noise/distortion dial up sound, but can still play the external synth even with the wierd distortion noise. But whenever I mute the track the whitenoise/ distortion stops.
I was hoping with all your knowledge invested in logic you would determine what the problem was.
    thanks alot for your time.
    hope you can help!

  • Hard drives for Logic Pro 8, Final Cut, After Effects, etc.

Hello gang, although i have read through many threads re: hard drive configs for different people's uses on many different forums (thats why i am here to get it straight from the apple's mouth) that i frequent and contribute to I have read everything from '10k drives only give a slight speed to boot up times' to 'with these 10k drives my machine is FLYING/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png'. The ladder posted by a crazy i am sure . So, If i were to purchase 2 10k drives (raptors are my only choice?) and use one for osx and my programs and the other for my scratch disk would i then use the stock 250 seagate that came with the machine as my itunes, pictures drive (i have an external FW800 750 seagate for back ups)? If i were to do this sort of configuration what would be my benefits if any at all? I had posted this in another forum and it pretty much had me more confused as people were going back and forth as to their PERSONAL preferences and it ran the gamut . I was hoping someone that uses the programs in the subject line or know what the new drives would do to make workflow more efficient. THIS IS THE LONGEST POST EVER. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. This is my 1st Mac Pro so i would like to set this lovely lady up correctly. Again, thank you for making it this far if you have .
    Best,
    Pandasarus

Yes, the latest 300GB VelociRaptor is still king, and one G5 owner (not Mac Pro) installed three and was very pleased.
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard103.html
    There are other options.
A WD Caviar 640GB would do fine.
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper14.html
RAID configurations of SAS vs SATA:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper13.html
    TB drives: http://www.barefeats.com/hard94.html
Boot drive (doesn't have every model):
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper9.html
I would go with 3 drives.
Backups: always have two or more so one is safe and off-line, things happen. TimeMachine plus SuperDuper backup clones combination.
Boot drive with just OS and applications, media drive, editing, and so you want to have a stripped scratch RAID.

  • *Logic Pro 9.1.1, Garageband, Waveburner, Abelton suddenly crashed and won't open at all !

I recently was working on a project in Logic Pro 9.1.1, saved the project and put my macbook to sleep. When i return, my mac wont turn on for the first 10-15 minutes sitting on the blank screen with the rotating circle. When it finally loads through and comes on I find that my Logic Pro software along with Waveburner, Garageband, Abelton, basically any DAW that i try to run will not open. The application icon just bounces and then shows the crash report, i also tried simply opening the project file. I have tried re-downloading the Logic Pro software with no luck. I desperately need this software to be working again, i will post the crash report along with this hoping someone could help out.
    Thanks, Alex

    Alex,
If you have to ask about backups then I would have to assume you have not been making any.. be it Clones of your System Drive using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! (My personal favorite) that you manually save to an external HD or you haven't setup and been using Time Machine that is built into OS X that automatically backs up everything to an ext HD.  I highly recommend you use one of those methods from now on... and in fact i highly recommend you use both methods.. as the Clone method allows you to quickly wipe out everything and reinstall from the clone image to take you back to where you were before any issue arrived. I make one every time before I upgrade anything major.. and I also make one every week...
So, as i said, did you try checking and repairing your System Disk using OS X's Disk Utility? That is the only possible other option you have at this time as you have no backups..
Other than that.. You will probably need to start again from scratch.... formatting the HD.. installing OS X and then your Apps etc...
Make sure you move/copy all personal data files such as Photos, docs, Logic Pro Projects and so on.....to an external HD before you reformat and start again... You can then move those personal data files back manually after you have reinstalled everything...

  • Logic Pro unexpectedly quit and now won't open at all please help!!

    Hi all,
I have a Macbook Pro, 10.7.5 - just the standard one. I use Logic Studio (Logic Pro 9) and normally it works fine but the other day I tried to bounce a track and I got the beachball of death and the message 'Logic Pro has quit unexpectedly, a version has been saved xxxxx (crashed) etc'. This happened everytime I tried to save or bounce or import, in any session - a blank one, or an old one.
So I did some research and on an apple support page ended up deleting the 'Prokit' thing from my library, and downloading the new one (Prokit update 7 I think). I tried opening Logic again and got this message:
'Logic Pro cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Logic Pro works with this version of Mac OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and Mac OS X.
Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple.'
I gave up a bit at this point, and thought I'd uninstall/delete every trace of Logic from my laptop, including the items in preferences (this was recommended online somewhere). I went through the (lenghty!!) process of reinstalling Logic and all the audio content and extra CDs, and the problem is still exactly the same and I can't open Logic.
Can anyone please help? I'm lost without being able to use Logic every day, any advise would be great!!
And I've also just updated Logic and still no luck.
    Thanks,
    David

No third party plug-ins, and no I didn't delete the /cs files.
I back up using time machine.

Hmm, very strange, never seen this message before. Have you tried going into Disk Utility and running a "Repair Disk Permissions" on your Macintosh HD? Can't guarantee it will fix the problem, but worth a try.. If you get really stuck, the simplest thing to do is just to uninstall Logic and then reinstall it, apply updates etc.. and try 64 bit again.

I am running Mountain Lion and Logic on 64 bit if that helps. Please bear in mind i'm new to Mac so sorry if i am being stupid
    thanks in advanced

It does help as it might explain what has gone wrong with your upgrade...
Unfortunately there is no easy solution for this problem.. I have seen it several times in the past with my clients...  and in reality, the only real fix is to start from scratch with Mountain Lion as i describe in this thread....
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21094000#21094000
Sorry.. I know it is a huge pain in the butt.... but apart from going back to Snow Leopard and using Logic Pro 9.1.8 with that (Which you can do if you made full backups before you upgraded) this method is really your only solution I'm afraid to say.... as it seems your upgrade 'screwed the pooch' so to speak....

  • Logic Pro 9 documents not opening after installation of Lion (10.7)

Since I installed Lion (OSX 10.7), I'm having a problem opening my Logic Pro (9.1.4) files. Any file I open, I receive the following error message: "The Document (name XXXX) could not be opened".
I have to find another logic document or the original app. in the Application folder, higilight it and/or open it, then go back to the original file and open it.
Can someone tell me why this is happening???
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a problem opening my logic pro it just bounces and crashes and this is what it says:

  • Logic Pro 9.1.7 crashing on startup

I recently switched to a Mac Pro and installed Logic and it was running okay for a while then started crashing as I tried to bounce or save projects, I looked into this problem and found the Pro Kit solution and did what the forum said. I trashed the pro kit frameworks file. When I try to re-install pro kit 7 it says a newer version of Pro Kit is already installed and won't let me install. Logic won't open at all now. I am running Lion. Here's my crash log:

Yup - exact same thing happened to me.
I was migrating from an older Mac Pro (2006, 1,1) running Snow Leopard to a brand new Mac Pro running Lion.
I was having weird 'insufficient access" errors, even after repairing and fixing all permissions.  An Apple Support doc recommended trashing and reinstalling the prokit.framework.   But after trashing it, the OS would not let me install the new one, saying "a newer version is already on your system".    THe OS seemed to think I had a newer version even though I'd trashed it, and programs (Logic, iPhoto, Final Cut) would crash immediately on startup, saying the framework file was not found.
Grr.    Calls to Apple Support proved fruitless.  The OS support guys tried hard but were baffled and sent me over to Logic support guys who were not only clueless but arrogant -- they insisted my hard drive was faulty even though it worked with every program except Logic and passed every diagnostic test.
I tried reinstalling Logic Pro from original disks.  No fix.   I tried the OS 10.7.4 combo updater reinstall.  No fix.
My fix was to copy the prokit.framework file from my old Snow Leopard machine onto the new machine.   At least now I'm able to run Logic but only in 64 bit mode.   Attempting to run 32 bit causes an immediate crash on startup.  This ***** coz as we all know Logic only scans certain plugins when in 32 bit mode.   Also, since Logic "Pro" STILL can't export audio to quicktime movies in 64 bit mode,  I have to use iMovie to submit my work...
I'm still hoping there's an answer for this one.   I'll be installing Mountain Lion soon and MAYBE that will do it -- but I don't dare attempt it while I'm still in the middle of projects that are currently running shakily, but at least they're running.
I'm at least a little heartened to see that I'm not the only one stuck in this bind.

  • Logic Pro crashes every time I click to open!!!

    Please help
I can no longer get into Logic Pro. Whenever I either click the icon or even try to open a logic progject I can not get in and immediately the below (with crash report) appears.
I transferred all my material from my old mac pro to this current mac pro with no other changes and this was my first attempt at trying to enter logic pro (it was working fine in my old mac pro).
Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated!!!!!

    try this:
If you transferred the Logic application from previous computer, you can't do that. You must install it from scratch. From my experience recently.
If you did install from scratch, unplug all of those peripheral usb/firewire drives and what-not and isolate the problem.
    good luck
