Day Two: Time Machine Started Over Again
I bought a new external 500 GB drive yesterday, connected it to my computer, and started Time Machine. A few hours (more than a few), the initial 70GB backup was complete. When I got home today I plugged it back in and it ran one or two more incremental backups. TM showed my oldest backup at last night, then several since.
Then I did what I'd intended to do once I had the initial backup made: I plugged it into my Airport Extreme. Good old Apple software recognized it the moment I mounted it, and I didn't even have to select a new volume in TM preferences.
Then, at the next scheduled incremental backup, TM started over from scratch. It is copying EVERYTHING to a disk image that it mounted, a disk image stored on the 500 GB drive. And now, in TM prefs, my oldest backup is '--' and the newest is the one in progress. It is like it disregarded everything I did today and is starting a brand new backup on the same drive.
Is this normal behavior? How do I merge the two, or tell TM to just use the one that it started earlier? Is that earlier backup worth anything now, or is it just a lump of virtual coal on my drive?

Can I just turn TM off, connect a new, larger, external drive and start over again? My current external is too small and for reasons too long to mention, it's not worth keeping the couple days of backup that are available. Is it that simple? Or if I do that, will it think there are backups on the other drive and not give me a complete backup first time through. I tried looking around but couldn't see this topic anywhere. Yes.
Note that the first update will take a couple of hours (I figure about 10 mins per GB).
But otherwise yes, plus it in go to System prefs time machine sleect the new disk and your all good to go!
If you want to sue the old one again use Disk utility and clear it out.
Also if you have a much larger drive now PARTITION IT (Disk Utility) make say 100 GB for stuff and 200 GB for backups....

Time machine started over after a complete restore, how to get to older?
Yesterday, photoshop and parrallels started crashing and I could not get them working, So I decided to do a complete system restore from install disk time machine from the day before when everything was working fine.
so it restored the system to its previous state. parrallels was still not working correctly so I restored the folder from a week or so ago. That didn't get it back either, so I thought of maybe reloading the application from an earlier time period might help.
But, time machine has started itself over. there is only backup data from this morning in the time machine internal backup drive. How do i get to my older backups? Do they just go away after a system restore?Sam,
No, you need to Ctrl-Click the Time Machine DOCK icon. Then choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...".
Here is a thought. When you did the restore, what Mac OS version did you restore. Your states say 10.5.5 but might your Mac have been restored to 10.5.4 or earlier with your restore?
I have found in my own testing, that since the 10.5.5 update, "Archive & Installs", "Erase & Installs", and "Restore System From Backup..." no longer trigger a new full backup. That is they continue to use the same backup set as before. (Note though, you will likely see a very large incremental backup, but not necessarily a new Full Backup set.) See my comments here:

If, however, you restored to a Mac OS version previous to 10.5.5, and then allowed Time Machine to perform a backup, then a new Full Backup would be preformed. Likely, you might be able to avoid this if you do the restore (prevent Time Machine from backing up), update to 10.5.5, then allow Time Machine to backup.

I am using the 30-day trial and have 4 days left. My problem is threefold - 1) I cannot open or see my timeline and don't wish to start over again; it's 15 minutes long - video, photos and audio. 2) My timeline has disappeared, so can't edit further 3) Need best way to export to DVD or my MacBook Pro laptop - don't know which settings/items to choose.

However, I still don't have a timeline, AND above is a screenprint of my timeline and what I presume is meant by the PROJECT. There is no project. Now, I can go up to the Event window and Export XML, but it doesn't give me a usable file. So, first, am I correct re: terminology - the timeline/bottom section is also known as the project folder/manager??
I've been reading other users strings as well and have tried their tricks as well. For instance, Eric Martin re: his deleting preference files (6/6), and Norman Jayo's (4/25) lengthy discourse with the "here is the work around" w/ 7 steps. Again, he mentions closing the PROJECT that is corrupted. I'm not sure that mine is corrupt as I can play and see my 15-minute audio/view in the view module (upper right).

Hi. I`ve just started transferring from my old Imac to a new Macbook, using the WIFI. But I realize it will take days to get it done. Can I cancel the process, and start over again using the thunderbolt port? Without causing any trouble?

Every couple of months, my 2009 Mac Mini becomes suddenly unresponsive to Screen Sharing, Remote Desktop, AFP/SMB connections, VPN connections, and even SSH logins. It was still pingable, and the router showed many active network connections from an application that I knew was still running on it.
It is a headless machine, so the only way I can gain control is to manually reboot.
The Time Machine volume is an iSCSI target on a Synology DS412+ connected from the Mac by GlobalSAN's iSCSI Initiator v5.2.0.429. I am using iSCSI because of poor performance using Time Machine directly over AFP.
I looked at the logs this time and found a direct link between the starting of the backupd service and the appearance of these log entries. It has happened once every hour for the last 7 days.

NO, your time capsule is running 7.6.1 but it is built with AFP following increased security for LION.. that is not required or available in Leopard.. so there is no point.. it is also not as stable on the older hardware.. at least in my experience.. I have repaired about 200 of the suckers so I do see a few.
When you select firmware update in the airport utility.. hold the option key.. all valid firmware versions for your TC then show up.. not only upgrades.. select 7.5.2 and upgrade to that.
Do a factory reset when you do it is a good idea though.. start off again.
And do reset of TM.. A4 in pondini.
See if it helps.
Oh, the TC will continually complain about needing a firmware update.. turn off automatic checking of updates.. it will still annoy you for fun every few weeks but that is better than daily. -
Can I have two Time Machine backup external drives on one Mac?
I have been using Time Machine for over a year and like it very much. The thought occurred to me that I should buy a new external drive that I can backup to and store at a remote location. I plan on making a backup each week, then taking this new drive to my office. That way, if my house ever burns down, I have a backup at my office too that will be a fairly recent backup.
When I unplugged my older external drive and tried to launch a backup using the new one, my Mac said it couldn't find my Time Machine drive. Won't it let me backup to two different drives? Or does it always need to backup to the same one?

Yes. All you have to do is tell it you've changed destinations, via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+ (Use different names for the drives, so you know which one is which.)
Try not to go too long between "swaps," though. After several days, especially if there's been a large volume of changes, Time Machine might do a new, full backup, instead of an incremental one.
However, I've learned over the years (mostly the hard way, of course ), never to trust my backups to a single app or piece of hardware: no app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later.
Like many here, I keep both full Time Machine backups, plus a "bootable clone" on a separate external HD. I use CarbonCopyCloner, many use the similar SuperDuper. That gives me the best of both types of backups, plus of course a completely separate, independent backup.
CCC is donationware; SD has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling. Either is easily found via Google.

When using Time Machine, if I delete items from my computer, will they still be backed up to access later on my external hard drive?
In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up that I have deleted from my computer?No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted. -
HT201250 once time machine starts running, it never stops. what could cause this?
Using WD, My Passport for Mac, 2TB with Time-Machine. Updated software on MacBook, now once time machine starts running an update it does not stop untill cancel it!
1. The first time takes very long always, after that it will only do changes very hour and you will not notice it. The drive must be correctly formatted, Guid Partition Table, Mac Os Extended (journaled).
2. If you installed any of the 'smart' software that came with the disk (specifically with the WD disk), you have to uninstall it completely immediately, because it will cause data loss and speed at the minimum: in macs you do not not need such additional software, just make sure that the disk is correctly formatted. If you had such software installed, and now uninstalled, you better reformat the drive, restart the mac, and then start all over again with TM.

External WD Passport won't recognize after Time Machine start.
I bought a WD passport 500 gb drive and when I initially plugged it in time machine saw it and when I asked it to use it- something happened and now NO icon appears in order to be selected nor does an icon show anywhere to even select. I changed the drive and the new one does the same. Cycles continously and never mounts. Did the usual- changed ports and changed wires. It just isn't recognized no matter what. What to do?

If the MAC has a register then my guess is some information about any external disk has been altered and I should need to to return it to it's original setting. That is because the second drive is doing the same as the first. I just don't know how to do that or even look.
If it uses the MBR (Master Boot Record) partition scheme, for Windoze, TM may have started to reformat it to GUID, but had that interrupted when you cancelled. If DU can't see it at all, there's not much you can do from your Mac. You may need to reformat it on a PC, then do it over on your Mac, via item #5 in the FAQ.
There are reports of problems with some WD drives having not working well on Macs. You might want to check their website support/forums, etc. -
i followed all the directions e ,mailed to me ,but when i tried to sync my iphone the error message said incorrect password. I then asked for a second set of instructions and redoubled my efforts and still no sucess i tried to reset tghe password but I don't have a sync tab setup under firefox/tools/options. If allowed to cancel the sync key and start over again knowing the pitfalls I have encountered I would be succeswful. i THINK FIREFox is the best system I enjoy using it every day. thankyou
On the iPad tap Settings > iCloud
Toggle Documents & Data off then back on then restart your iPad.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
On the iMac open System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Documents & Data then reselect it then restart your iMac. -
After doing a request on some of mye portal pages the page starts to render, but then suddenly the partitially rendered content is discarded and the request starts over again. This can happen up to 3 times for a page.
This happens only on our portal servers running on windows, I haven't seen this behaviour on linux.
When the response is discarded the rendered content shows some visible html code on the page (due to unclosed tags since the response is cut off), before the request starts over again.
Could this be a configuration issue with the PPE?
Portal Version: 9.0.2.3.0I have had similar problems (book layouts and photo orientations lost). They are very hard to understand. A book can be correct on one computer, but if you export the project and import it to another computer, book info is gone. This has been a great time waster - fortunately, I have been able to retrieve some of what I lost from my daily and weekly backups. I hope that the cause of these problems can be tracked down and eliminated in a future update.
Aperture has improved a lot since 1.0, but it has some weaknesses that some might think preclude it's use as a "pro" application.

Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.

After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.

Airplay movie stops and start over again
I have problem with AirPlay while watching play-channels from my iPad. After a while the program just starts over again. What can I do to fix this?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
