DB-15 for console connection?

I have a DB-15 port on the back of my laptop.  Can I use this to console into a router?  What cables and adaptors do I need to make this work?

The "standard" console cable that ships with many Cisco products is a serial DB-9 to RJ-45 type. If your laptop has a DB-15 RS-232 serial port I suppose your COULD purchase a DB-15 to DB-9 adapater and then plug in a standard Cisco console cable to that.
Personally I'd strongly prefer getting a USB-Serial adapter and using that from your PC to the standard Cisco console cable. I use a TRENDnet TU-S9 Serial adapter - USB. you can get them for about US$11 at Amazon.com. With one of those, you can use it with any PC with a USB connection - much more common than one with a DB-15 serial port.
While you're at it, if you use any of the newer switches like the 3750X series that have the mini-USB console you might want to order one of those for your toolkit. They cost a bit more at about $23 but it's nice to have that cable since the newere console ports are on the front of the switch and typically more accessible. Search for "Cisco Type A T0 Mini Type B USB Cable (6 feet)".

  • RJ-45 to USB Adapter for console connection?

    Hello,
I would like to configure a Cisco 3600 Router with my laptop, however, I do not have the RJ-45 to DB-15 cable, nor do I have the DB-15 serial port on my laptop. I also do not have the required DB-15 to USB adapter that would be needed to assist me in connecting my computer to the router.
Just curious (so I won't have to buy the cable and the adapter), is there an RJ-45 to USB cable that would allow me to connect directly from Cisco's 3600 Router console port directly to my laptop?
    Thank you,

In the labs here at Cisco, and at the Cisco Networking Academy I work for, we use the light blue Cisco flat console cable (Male RJ-45 connection and a Female DB-9 Serial connection), and then a USB adapter to hook to our computers.
The blue cables are very cheap online, as every lab that orders Cisco equipment has ZILLIONS of them.  The adapters are pretty inexpensive as well; just note not all are plug-and-play; some need specific drivers (usually easily found online).

  • Configuring AAA to include local auth for Console connections

Recently realized, during a maintenance window, that my AAA configurations are not set to use local authentication if the AAA server is unavailable. Could use a little help in making sure I have the correct setup. Below is what I have configured today:
    aaa new-model
aaa authentication login default group tacacs+
aaa authentication enable default group tacacs+
aaa authorization auth-proxy default group tacacs+
aaa accounting commands 15 default start-stop group tacacs+
    tacacs-server host x.x.x.x
    tacacs-server timeout 120
    tacacs-server directed-request

  • Multiple vnc console connections for guest vm

Is there anyway to allow multiple computers to connect to the same guest VNC console?
I noticed in the vm.cfg there were multiple VNC options and I attempted to play with them to see if I could get multiple console connections to work. After editing the file and restarting the guest vm I couldn't get multiple connections. The VM Server users guide didn't provide any clarity on what the VNC commands in the vm.cfg do, just some examples of guest configs. Can anyone enlighten me on how to do this or possibly refer to a link if this question has been asked in the past.
    Thanks,

Q1:Is there anyway to allow multiple computers to connect to the same guest VNC console?
I suggest that you config/start vnc server on guest OS, and you may connect it from different computers. it make sense for you?
Q2:Can anyone enlighten me on how to do this or possibly refer to a link if this question has been asked in the past.
Pleaser refer to this link to know more about VNC options in vm.cfg.

  • Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting?

Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting? Please suggest if there is any best prctice documentation that can be referred.

    Hi Henrik
depend on what you need or what your security policy says for my lab gear i use 60 minutes. because i know how can access this. if you have gear outside in insecure space set it to a minimum or disable the console. everybody how can access your gear can break in. simple restart and boot w/o config. and you are in.
it realy depends how secure is your space and how much security you need.
and than the settings for policy have to match, what sec do you have if your console login and logout is secure. but when you restart you can simple break in by starting w/o config and than load it.

  • Bluetooth Serial and Cisco Console connections?

This may be the wrong forum for this, but network management was the closest fit i could find...
(First off, I agree that console connections are not preferred, SSH, HTTPS, SNMP all have their advantages, but when something goes down or stops responding to normal methods the amount of time and frustration that can be saved by not having to search for "that one laptop that has a serial port" or "my specific laptop that has the USB-Serial driver installed" is invaluable.)
With the proliferation of tablet devices (ipad, cius, samsung's proposed, etc.), add to it a serious lack of serial ports on most laptops/netbooks/etc being released.  It's getting harder and harder to connect to console ports on cisco devices.  USB to serial adapters fit the bill for now, provided you had the right drivers to run the adapter on your device (read: doesn't address tablets and smartphones).
I understand that the cisco console connection is considered "legacy" and that USB connections are becoming more popular with newer Cisco devices, but in the meantime it would be nice to manage my slice of the millions of "legacy" devices out there.
Bluetooth serial seems to hold promise, though the serial features of bluetooth aren't typically incorporated into most devices right now.  What i guess I'm looking for is a way to manage my router and switch console ports from a smart phone or tablet device.
Has anyone seen anything like this out there right now?
I would think that Cisco would be interested in marketing such a feature with their new Cius, or an iPod or Android app.  Even if it cost a couple of bucks for the adapter or the software, it would be well worth it to be able manage these devices in a pinch.
Thanks to anyone that can help!
    JM

I agree, it wold be handy to have.
One thing some of us use is iSSH on the iPhone or iPad. Straight across the in-house wi-fi LAN if there's a working one in house or via the VPN tunnel if not. The use cases of no w-fi, no VPN or an unresponsive box are still not addressed by that solution though.

In the article you posted (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278845/ )
    I can read:
    MORE INFORMATION
In Windows Server 2003, when you use Terminal Services, you can connect to the console session (session 0), and at the same time, open a shadow session to it (as long as you connect from a session other than the console). With this added functionality, you can log on to a Windows Server 2003-based server that is running Terminal Services remotely and interact with session 0 as if you were sitting at the physical console of the computer. This session can also be shadowed so that the remote user and the local user at the physical console can see and interact with the same session.
if I connect via the command mstsc -v:servername /F -console as you describe, in task manager I see my connection with id 0...

  • Console Connection

I'm just curious if I've missed anything. Now that no one is making laptops with COM ports any longer, and it looks like desktops will soon be following suit, how is Cisco planning on handling the Console connection in the future? My laptop died and I am having a heck of a time reconfiguring routers, since many of them are in phone closets far away from the nearest desktop.
    Paul

Well, for the short term, you can use some/most USB->RS232 adapters on the laptop.
Beware though: not all of them support "COM:x" style communication (or they support it, but just don't work with some terminal programs).
In the long term, I'd expect that Cisco will shift to USB. Most of the new stuff has some flavor of USB connection.
Blame Intel; they're the ones working so hard to get rid of the legacy connections (PS2 Keyboard, Mouse, and serial ports).
If you have a couple devices per closet, your other option might be a one, two or four-port terminal server; then you can telnet in from your desktop and save youself the walk to the closet.
It's still a serial connection to the device, so you can change IP addresses, masks, & such and reboot ...
The last time I checked, the two-port term servers were well under US$100.

  • How to speed up Hyper-V VM (console) Connection?

    Hi all;
Are there any ways to speed up VM connection from Hyper-V Manager console or Failover Cluster Manager console?
    Thanks

"for the logon page to appear" is a pretty subjective thing.  I can think of many reasons that it takes time for the logon page to appear that have absolutely nothing to do with the VMconnect.exe application nor Hyper-V.
We would need something more concrete to venture any guesses at solutions.
If you want to be specific to the VM console appearing from the time you double click - then you have something.
But you still need to ensure that the VM is 'ready' - as you want to focus on the console connection and not any actions that you need to perform against the VM such as clicking ctrl+alt+del - as the speed of that action and the logon appearing is
related to your hardware and the configuration of the VM.
Also, is the VM console connection local or remote?  A remote connection will take longer as the connection needs to be formed and then the VM console pulled through - a remote connection is always slower - use RDP direct to the VM and the VM console
    as a backup.

  • Checking console connection on ASA

    Hi all,
Need to confirm which config i should look for to make sure ASA  has console connection enabled
i check on ASDM  under AAA  access serial option is not checked.
What should i look in running config to make sure console is enabled?
    thanks
    mahesh

    Also,
Since you dont see the setting "checked" under ASDM that to my understanding just means that the Console connection doesnt use any external AAA server for authentication OR doesnt use local username/password to authenticate.
You should be able to get to the command prompt without giving any credentials. You will though have to give an enable password naturally when using the command "enable"

  • Change http port for Adobe Connect Pro?

I'm running Adobe Connect Pro 7.5 and would like to change the HTTP port Adobe Connect Pro uses.  I've changed this from 80 to 90 in the Adobe Connect Pro console and saved.  Then restarted my Adobe Connect Pro application.  When I go to the URL http:\\<servername>:90 I get a "Connot Connect to Webpage" error.  If I change it back to 80 the URL http:\\<servername>:80 works.
Does anyone know how I can change the port for  Adobe Connect Pro 7.5?  Is there another step I need to do on my Windows 2003 server?

I've had to "cache" uploaded videos by playing them shortly before the audience will see them. For me, the cache holding time when using Adobe's servers is about 5 minutes.

  • Waiting for a connection...

I have installed the Adobe Inspect app on my Android 4.4.4 , I have installed the extension for Google Chrome on my Window 7 desktop, I have installed Adobe Edge Inspect CC on my Window 7 desktop.  I am signed in to creative cloud. Both the device and my laptop are connected to the same WiFi network.
I cannot get the Android device and laptop to recognize each other. The extension in Chrome, it's just spinning and says "Waiting for a connection..."
I have tried tapping the "+" on my iPhone and have added the IP address manually and get the message "Connection unseccessful, please try again."
Connection to Port 7682 is established only when Edge inspect is running.
Firewall Connections are open . Find below the screenshot.
    Screenshot
Console tab in background.html on chrome browser does not gives any error.
Please assist and help me resolve the issue.

Most likely devices and desktop are not connected to the same WiFi Network, or something is blocking port 7682 that Edge Inspect uses for communication between the apps. You might also want to check with IT department to see if  they block communication across that port.
