DB connection using Tomcat

Can I know how to get connected to DB using Tomcat. Any souce code of one sample prog. will be helpful.

You can try using the same procedure as you do with the other servers.
DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver()) - if you have the Oracle Thin driver. Otherwise no need for this step.

Serious problem of jdbc-mysql connectivity using tomcat

hi everybody
i m in serious problem since last 15-20 days. i m trying hard to make the connection jdbc-mysql using tomcat with the help of a jsp test page but every time i am facing almost the similar probems listed below in detail:
to make sure that the jdrivers's .jar (mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar) available for such connections working fine i have tried the above said connection without using tomcat....which is working fine...for this i have created a dummy database with a dummy table ..and written some queries in the .java file of my code which upon running inserts the specified values in the defined(dummy) database.
this is the confirmation that the classpath etc..are ok in regard to the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar
now i have placed a copy of this .jar file in to the commons/lib directory of the tomcat web server(which is suppossed to be the place for such external jars)
after doing so i have followed 2 methods :

after compiling it at the cmd prompt i made a .jar file from the .class of it and named it MySQLLoad.jar...then i placed it also in to the commons/lib directory where the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar was already placed.
then i have changed the server.xml and web.xml files from the conf directory of the tomcat as given here:

and placed it in to the Tomcat 5.5\webapps\tomcat-docs\testdb directory and saved as test-db.jsp
when i run this page on the browser i get a lot may errors stating

AND NOW WHEN just to get rid of such errords i try to include a statement
<%@ page import="pkg.TestSQLLoad" %> in the jsp page code (and also place the MySQLLoad.class file in a folder called pkg and place it in the same directory where the jsp page is )and make it look like

in response to the above error i have even tried placing the MySQLLoad.class directly in the testdb folder along with the jsp page without keeping it in a package named pkg and then importing directly as <@page import="MySQLLoad" %>

Using Tomcat as a web server at deployment stage

Hi everyone,
Does anyone of you ever used Tomcat as a web server at deployment stage?
Has he then faced performance problems? or any other of any kind?
Was he limited in the number of users to get an acceptable request process time? Is there a special configuration to set in the web.xml file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a Tomcat server in production (no Apache/IIS, Tomcat is on port 80) and it runs great. We have about 200 heavy use users on it. The server (version 4.18) is on a Windows 2000 Server / 512 Meg RAM / P3-800 DELL Box. Its connected to a SQL 2000 Server on another box through the built in Tomcat DBCP connection pool.
We were initially going to run it through IIS; but we found it such a pain to set up we decided to leave it on Tomcat. For our application it probably would not have shown a difference in speed anyways.
Its very fast and reliable for us.
As far as tuning, there is a document here that will to you what to do; its very basic actually; just two changes.

Also, make sure you don't have any reloadable="true"'s in your Context's.

Problem using Tomcat 4.1

I'm trying to establish connection with the database from JSP.When I'm running it's giving the following error
"oracle.jdbc.driver.Oracle.Driver class not found"
I'm using Tomcat 4.1 and database is Oracle 8i.I've already set the classpath."C:\oracle\ora92\jdbc\lib"(Oracle is intalled in C drive).
Kindly help me resolve this issue.

Tomcat does not use the system classpath.
As far as Tomcat is concerned the classpath for a web app is
1 - web-inf/classes
2 - jar files in web-inf/lib
3 - jar files in [TOMCAT]/shared/lib
4 - jar files in [TOMCAT]/common/lib
If you are going to be using Tomcat's connection pooling, you need the JDBC driver jar file in [TOMCAT]/common/lib
I would recommend you put the file ojdbc14.jar (or equivalent) in the [TOMCAT]/common/lib directory
Restart tomcat, and try again.

Using Tomcat - Avant go page timeout

Hello,
I am actually developing an application for Palm devices using Tomcat and AvantGo. I have some XML/XSL stuff which I transform to HTML using a Servlet. Several different parameters can be passed to the Servlet.
In AvantGo I created a custom channel which calls this Servlet. The first page contains links to other pages using the same Servlet with different parameters.
When synchronizing the Palm, AvantGo returns only the first page of my application, any other page contains the error message: "Timed Out. AvantGo closed the connection to this page because it was idle too long"
The synchronization lasts also about 2 Minutes, so no doubt about the correctness of the timeout message.
When browsing through the application with a normal browser or even with the Palm emulator - on the same or on a different machine - there is no problem and speed is fast enough.
I do not know if AvantGo opens several connections to Tomcat which cannot reply to them in a certain laps of time...
Any suggestions?

I just found the answer myself:
I put in the XSL for a link "?&param1=value1&param2=value2" which works best with a standard browser.
But IT DOES NOT WORK WITH AvantGo (and some other handheld browsers).
So put instead "<servletname>?&param1=value1&param2=value2"

By using Tomcat JNDI, database url information needs to be hardcoded in server.xml file according to the documentation. Is there a way to change the URL information in the code dynamically if necessary?
And also we need multiple connection pools and the connection information about those pools are only known during run time. So the TOMCAT JNDI is still the right way to go???
By the way, does anybody ever use tomcat DBCP package to get datasource and set url dynamically?

I think so. Since it's just a JDNI lookup, perhaps you can set up multiple data sources and decide on the lookup name at the last minute, depending on circumstances. That might work. I haven't tried it myself. - MOD

Connection to tomcat server

I would like to deploy my application with Jdeveloper 11 to tomcat server. For that I created a new connection to my tomcat server, but it says after opening the deplyments in the tree of Application Server Navigator: Connection Error
What is this connection error? Where can I check the reason of it? What can be teh reason of that?
The tomcat is different machine. I am connected to the file system via samba share.
What is needed to be configured in the remote machine to be reachable from jdeveloper?

We are not making a JSR-160 connection to Tomcat in JDeveloper 11g, thus the ability to expand the nodes within the Application Server Navigator and perform any interaction is non-existent. We only expose the web application directory location so that archive files can be copied for the Tomcat server deployment. The Tomcat support is thus limited. Once the application is deployed you'll want to use the Tomcat console for further interaction.

I need your help to solve my issue with connection pool.
I' m developing a jsp application and I use tomcat container for connection pool.
I created a connection class, so in my dao classes I do
DataSource dataSource = dbconnection.getInstance().getDataSource(); conn = dataSource.getConnection();
to get datasource and connection.
In my application I've some servlet and dao to perform db operations.
My question is...what is best way to get connection, in the init method of servlet that calls dao (so I need to pass connection from servlet to dao) or directly in the dao?

If the "dao" objects are persistent then you don't want to either. If they are not persistent, then in the dao classes, if they are persistent, then in the individual service methods (i.e. doGet, doPost).
Edit: Actually, whether persistnet or not, they should not, necessarily, be in either the dao classes, nor in the services, they should be wherever a connection is needed (transaction complete), exactly where that is, depends partially on exactly how you've written your app.
But, in case, neither in a "static/persistent" block, nor in "init" as all of those will be shared across threads which will lead to problems.

Viewing Excel Files using Tomcat - Problem with caching

A small part of an application I'm writing has links to Excel files for users to view/download. I'm currently using Tomcat v5 as the web/app server and have some very simple code (an example is shown below) which calls the excel file.

This all works except but I'm having one big problem.
The xls file (file1.xls) is updated via a share on the server so each month, the xls file is overwritten with the same name but with different contents. I'm finding that when an update is made to the xls file and the user then attempts to view the new file in the browser they recieve only the old xls file. It's caching the xls file and I don't want it to. How can I fix this so that it automatically gives the user the new updated file.
The only way I've managed to get Tomcat to do this is to delete the work directory and delete the file from my IE temp folder and then restart Tomcat - this is a bit much!

I'd a problem with caching a few years back, for a servlet request which returned an SVG file.
As a workaround, I ended up putting appending "#" and a timestamp / random number after it. The browser assuming each request was new, and didn't use the cache.
Eg.
http://myserver/returnSVG.do#1234567
where 1234567 is a timestamp / random.
Not sure whether you can do this on a file based URL... but maybe worth a shot...

In the ReportDocument.Load method it tries to connect using the using the connection information embedded in the Report File. When the application calls ReportDocument.Load(reportFileName). This
tries to connect to the database using the connection information embedded in
the "reportFileName". This was only realised on checking the ODBC Trace
Log. The connection itself is not a problem. The problem is that the embedded
connection information is related to OLD production system. And failed
connections had raised some concerns.
Note: I am using
SetDataSource to populate the data for the report. So I don't need the
connection.
Is there any way I
can disable this auto-connect?
