DB Links and APEX

Has anyone got Data Base Links to work when used through XE's APEX.
Via sql*plus, I can create a DB link from my XE database to a 9.2.0.x database
I can then successfully use this via sql*plus and a packaged procedure called from sql*plus, so I know the link works fine.
As soon as I access the link via the HTML front end (APEX) shortly afterwards I end up with a white screen with only a "IBMPC/WIN_NT" message, and a new dump file. 40 seconds later (after a process has restarted?) I can re connect via APEX.
After searching on the APEX and XE forums, I have tried changing the browser language but that did not help. I have even placed the use of the link in an autonomous transaction but that did not help.
Has anyone successfully used database links from XE's APEX?
If so, how did you get it to work?
GP>

yes, in sql*plus the link works fine.
I can access it directly, and if I create a view based on the link the view works fine.
If I create the view I can describe it, I can select from it, it works just fine.
100% - all the time.
The only time I get a problem is when I access it through XE's APEX.
Looking on the APEX forum, other people have reported this problem and the view was that this is not a problem with APEX, but with XE (APEX on XE)
The following dump ONLY come out when I start to make use of a DB link, removing the link from my apex application, everything works just fine.
A typical dump would look like:

  • How to create a database link between an 8i (apps) database and APEX

    Want to link my Oracle APPS databse on 8i with Oracle XE and APEX. Any idea how to achieve this ?

    I don't know what Apex is!!! But try to follow these instructions.
    It works for Oracle 9i.
    As far as I know, you are supposed to have installed other than ORACLE Client to complete these instructions.
    1. Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Data Sources (ODBC)
    Folder: System DSN /
    click add
    Choose : Microsoft Access Driver
    Data Source Name : my_test
    Description : any_description_you_want
    click Database/Select... : full pathname for <your_file.mdb>
    click OK
    Click OK
    2. Goto OH\hs\admin:
    2.1) Create a copy of "inithsodbc.ora" file giving it this name:
    initmy_test.ora
    2.2) Edit "initmy_test.ora" and change as below.
    # HS init parameters
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = my_test
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = OFF
    3. Add this entry to listener ( Don't forget to stop/start the listener )
    (SID_DESC =
    (SID_NAME = my_teste)
    (ORACLE_HOME = <Path to OH> ) ### Ex: D:\ORANT901
    (PROGRAM = hsolesql)
    4. Now you need to add entries to point to the HS in the tnsnames.ora :
    access =
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=<your_host>)(PORT=1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SID=my_test))
    (HS=my_test)
    5. Now you need to go into the database and create the database link:
    CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK "ACCESS_DB" USING 'access';
    6. select * from your_table@ACCESS_DB;

  • Interactive report conditional display of link column - apex 4

    I create an interactive report
    select object_id,
           object_name,
           case
            when mod(rownum, 2) = 0
            then 'block'
            else 'none'
           end  display_link
    from user_objects
    where rownum <= 10in the Link Column for the report I selected one of the edit icons and put the following in the link attributes
    style="display:#DISPLAY_LINK#"I also edited the object_id and set the Column Link and selected an edit icon and put the same style in the link attributes.
    The link under the column displays correctly but the link for the report does not seem to substitute the #DISPLAY_LINK# from the report. Any Ideas?

    Here's how I've done this:
    SELECT ORG_ID,
           CLEARER_NAME,
           LEGAL_NAME,
           MARGINING_ACCOUNT,
           RULE_GROUP_DESCR,
           VIOLATION_COLOR,
           VIOLATION_LEVEL,
           CASE MARGIN_IND
            WHEN 'Y' THEN '&nbsp'
            ELSE '<a href="#" title="Ignore This Alert"><img src="/i/ice/images/hide.png" alt="Ignore"></a>'
           END AS IGNORE_LINK,
           ....This takes care of either showing (or not showing) the link.
    IN order to process when it is present, not that the address is "#" This will cause your cursor to change to a hand (or whatever your pointer is) when the mouse floats over the link. The actual transfer to the next page, I handle with jQuery/JavaScript.
    Create a Dynamic Action.
    Event: Click
    Selector Type: jQuery Selector
    jQuery Selector: 'aalt'
    Event Scope: Live
    (note that the jQuery Selector is finding the alt attribute that I set on my link in the SELECT above . Tweak as needed.
    This "Action" for this DA will be to "execute JavaScript code"
    Normally, I would set some values into Page Items and then create a branch to pass this values to the next page. I am doing the same thing in the following code. I am getting the values off of the row wherein the user clicked on the link. I am setting these values from the row into the page item values. Then, I am submitting the page. All the "htmldb_Get" business is just stuff that I have to do to get the page item values into the session (so that I can pass them to the next page).
    var clickedRow = this.triggeringElement.parentNode.parentNode.parentNode;
    var ruleGroupDescr = $(clickedRow).children('td[headers="RULE_GROUP_DESCR"]').html();
    var ajaxRequest = new htmldb_Get(null, $x('pFlowId').value, null, 0);
    gReturn = ajaxRequest.get();
    $s('P31_RULE_GROUP_DESCR', ruleGroupDescr );
    ajaxRequest = null;
    var clearerName = $(clickedRow).children('td[headers="CLEARER_NAME"]').html();
    var ajaxRequest = new htmldb_Get(null, $x('pFlowId').value, null, 0);
    gReturn = ajaxRequest.get();
    $s('P31_CLEARER_NAME', clearerName );
    ajaxRequest = null;
    apex.submit("IGNORE");Finally, just create a branch to the next page and set the items on the next page to the ones on this page that are being set in the above script. Note that in my example, I have set the request to "Ignore" when I submitted; so, I set the condition of my branch to be Request = IGNORE.
    Hope this helps,
    -Joe

  • Websheets: create link to APEX application in same workspace

    Hi all,
    I'm trying some things with websheets in APEX 4.0.2 and I'm getting quite satisfied about it.
    Let's assume I have this situation:
    app_id 110 : database application with alias MAIN
    app_id 120 : database application with alias SEC
    app_id 130 : websheet application
    They all use the same authentication function, which works fine.
    App 110 and 120 use the same authentication cookie and there are links between these two applications. No problem at all.
    Now, I want to include links to and from the websheet application.
    The link to the websheet is easy: ws?p=130:HOME:&SESSION. So far so good and no log-in required.
    A link from inside the websheet application to a database application is something else.
    I've already found how to use markup syntax to link to another page in the same websheet
    [[HOME | Home link]]and to an external website
    [[http://www.oracle.com | Oracle]]But I can't find the syntax to link to a database application in the same workspace as the websheet.
    I could use
    [[http://<myserver>.<mydomain>/apex/f?p=MAIN:HOME | Home application]]But this is not working flexible. I want to leave out everything before f?p
    If I would install these three applications on antother server, my link won't work anymore.
    Also, I can't find a way to include the session id. &SESSION. isn't working. So with the above syntax, I would have to re-login in my database application.
    Then I tried this
    [[f?p=MAIN:HOME | Home application]]But this isn't working at all. The websheet shows me the create page wizard and fills in the name of the page: f?p=MAIN.
    Can anyone help me out on this?
    Am I expecting to much from websheets at the moment, is this a missing feature or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Bart

    Hi,
    Sorry originally I thought you were linking to websheets not from, I don't think websheets have the same capability as a database application, so i don't think apex picks up on substitution strings. Im not sure how processing with websheets work, but I think its very minimal.
    Ive tried it myself, is there a reason you need the session? If I leave the session blank I can get back to the database application, I cant vouch if you're starting from your websheet but I imagine that apex will fill it in for you as its an apex url.
    Cheers

  • How to configure Oracle SSO for forms and apex

    Hi All,
    I am trying to configure oracle SSO for forms and apex using third party external authentication. Please help me how to configure. I a have tried all possible things
    from web but I am not able to do it. Is there any doc or links are much appreciated.
    Info: Some reason my oiddas web link is not working it used to work fine before and also the from /pls/orasso/ link I am not able to login may be because of my oiddas issue
    Thanks

    Hi Andreas,
    Thanks you for your help. I am trying to implement third party external LDAP authentication for APEX and Forms.
    So I started with OID and SSO setup to create external Partner Applications. Some reason my oid and sso web login links are not working. I didn't find any errors. I need some help in finding the problem and direction, I already read docs on web but no proper direction. I appreciate your help.
    Thanks

  • URGENT Printing a BI publisher report from a column link in APEX

    I am developing an APEX report with a column link that will call a BI publisher report, the case is the link column in the APEX report will pass the item number to the BI publisher query.
    At the moment this is what I am doing:
    1- Create a hidden item on top of page zero. (e.g. PARAM1_VALUE)
    2- Create a report query and a report layout (For BI Publisher) in the Shared Components. (e.g ITEM_REPORT)
    3- Include the state session in the report query and reference that item in the query. (e.g. SELECT * FROM items where item_number = :PARAM1_VALUE)
    4- Create an APEX report displaying orders with the item number as a link column.
    5- In the Link column I set the report URL request to be "PRINT_SERVER=ITEM_REPORT".
    6- In addition I set the PARAM1_VALUE to be #ITEM_NUMBER# on the link.
    When I press on the link the BI publisher report prints but it doesn't display anything except the Headers, my understanding is that PARAM1_VALUE is not set with the item_number value when I press on the link and thus the query returns no results as when I remove the condition from the query i can see the report printing.
    Please help as this is urgent

    I opened the session and it is there with a proper value, it appears that whenever I enable the inclusion of session state in my shared components query the query returns no rows even if I am not using the item in the query.
    So if my query is "SELECT * FROM items" it will display nothing, the only way to get the report data back is to untick the inclusion of the session state and remove any reference to the item from my query, then I will get the report with all my data (which is NOT what I am trying to do).
    Thanks alot

  • Image cache not working with Firefox and apex

    Hi,
    I'd like to cache all my images to save page rendering time and bandwidth because my images are all static and never change.
    I use the John Scott's caching technique Link: [http://jes.blogs.shellprompt.net/2007/05/18/apex-delivering-pages-in-3-seconds-or-less/], in a few words this technique consists of adding a header line "Expires: date in the future" in the http response.
    It works very well in IE, the images are cached and the same image can be accessed several times (within the same session or in different sessions) without issuing an http request to the server each time.
    with Firefox it does not work, the same image is asked again and again to the server (i'm using FF 3.5 and APEX 3.2).
    - Is it a date format problem? no, because when i type about:cache in FF, i can find my image in the cache with an expire date in the future.
    The weird thing here is that the counter is incremented each time u request the image, so FF knows it is in the cache and even if the expire date is in the future, FF asks it again to the server.
    - Is it a FF bug? If u read the http specs or if u google a little, u can come to the conclusion that FF does not follow the standards,
    but... images.google.com for example manages to get its images cached with FF.
    They use an http response header "cache-control: public, max-age=604800".
    I tried the same and all kinds of combinations but without success.
    When i compare my image with the one from google in the FF cache, they both have the same attributes.
    - It's not an apex issue neither because it works with IE, most probably an incompatibility between apex and FF?
    Maybe the use of cookie? or the http request (not the response) containing "cache-control: max-age=0"?
    I've found so far 2 half solutions:
    1) use ETag and modified date, see the Tyler Muth's note Link: [http://tylermuth.wordpress.com/2008/02/04/image-caching-in-plsql-applications/].
    with this technique FF continues to send request each time but the answer is shorter because it's just a "304 not modified" instead of "200 OK" (200 response is bigger as it contains the image).
    it's better than nothing but you still have 1 request + 1 response for nothing.
    Another problem is that you need SYS access to implement this, which is not possible on an hosted server. (note that for images from the file system it is already foreseen by apex 3.1, Tyler's note is for images from the db)
    2) if you preload the image (using myimage=new Image();myimage.src='...';), then there is max 1 request per browser session.
    There are 2 minor issues here:
    - no caching across sessions
    - if u don't want to preload all the images (example a page with lots of thumbnails, when user clicks it show a bigger image, in that case the thumbnails can be preloaded but overkill for the big images), then you need to load the image, wait until the image has loaded before displaying it, it does not slow down the execution, but requires some extra JS.
    I'm not asking anyone to investigate it, i can live with the 2 workarounds,
    but just in case someone encountered the same problem and already fixed it.
    Let me know if u managed to use the John Scott's technique with Firefox. (U can use Firebug to see the http traffic)
    Thx
    Tim

    Thanks Varad,
    But it didn't worked, The page has option to link only 3 values.
    My Target is 'Page in this Application" not a URL.
    I used your format and if you apply changes and come back the whole thing is dissappeared and even the link to page in application is inactive.
    Is there any other way???

    Hello
    Tried the Oracle White Paper - Oracle Text Web Applications
    Created the table and populated with relevant url links
    create table htmldb_documentation(
    id number,
    doc_title varchar2(4000),
    doc_url varchar2(4000))
    then created the index
    create index htmldb_doc_ctxidx on htmldb_documentation(doc_url)
    indextype is ctxsys.context
    parameters ('datastore CTXSYS.URL_DATASTORE')
    Then ran my SQL for the report in Toad and APEX SQL Workshop>SQL Commands before creating an APEX Region based on a SQL Report
    select score(1) relevance, doc_title, doc_url
    from htmldb_documentation
    where CONTAINS (doc_url, :P1_SEARCH, 1) > 0
    order by 1 desc
    After running the APEX Report I get error

    grant execute on ctx_query to demo;
    grant execute on ctx_report to demo;
    grant execute on ctx_thes to demo;
    grant execute on ctx_ulexer to demo;
    Any ideas ?? I'm running APEX 3.1.0.00.32 on Oracle 10.2.0.1 on WindowsXP
    If I replace the bind variable :P1_SEARCH, with a literal value the error disappears

    Couple of things to check:
    1) do you have an item called P1_SEARCH in your application?
    2) If so, make sure that it has a value; otherwise, Oracle Text gets confused and will throw that error.
    You may want to consider using a PL/SQL Function Returning SQL Query that will only append the CONTAINS clause if P1_SEARCH has some value.
    Thanks,

  • How do you close a database link in Apex?

    How do you close a database link in Apex that is referenced in an interactive report on Page 1? I want to make sure the database link is closed before a user navigates to another page in the Apex application.
    Lets assume the database link is referenced in the region source for Page 1 as follows:
    Page 1 - Employee Listing
    Region Source:
    select ename, job, hiredate
    from scott.emp@link1
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
    Ms. H

    John,
    I figured out how to eliminate the ORA-02020 and ORA-02081 errors. The solution is reference below:
    1. Create an interactive report in a page.
    2. Add the SQL statement in the region source as listed below:
    SELECT ENAME, JOB, HIREDATE
    FROM SCOTT.EMP@DBLINK
    WHERE (UPPER(ENAME) LIKE '%' || UPPER(:P1_TEXT_SEARCH)||'%')
    Conditional Display
         Condition Type:
    PL/SQL Expression
         Expression 1
         :P1_TEXT_SEARCH IS NOT NULL
    3. Add a search button and text search field as items on the page.
    4. Create a process in the page to check the cursor and catch an exception as listed below:
         Name: CHECK_CURSOR
         Sequence: 30
         Point: On Submit - After Computations and Validations
         Type: PL/SQL Anonymous Block
         PL/SQL Process:
         FOR C1 IN (SELECT ENAME, JOB, HIREDATE
         FROM SCOTT.EMP@DBLINK
    WHERE (UPPER(ENAME) LIKE '%' || UPPER(:P1_TEXT_SEARCH)||'%'))
         LOOP
         IF C1.ENAME IS NOT NULL
              THEN
              HTP.P('Employee Name: '||C1.ENAME||' ');
              END IF;
         END LOOP;
         EXCEPTION
              WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND
              THEN
              APEX_APPLICATION.G_PRINT_SUCCESS_MESSAGE := 'No Data Found Error';
              WHEN OTHERS THEN
              APEX_APPLICATION.G_PRINT_SUCCESS_MESSAGE := 'Unexpected Error';
    Conditional Processing
    When Button Pressed (Process After Submit When This Button is Pressed)
         P1_SEARCH_DATA
    5. Create a process in the page to close the database link as listed below:
         Name: CLOSE_DBLINK
         Sequence: 40
         Point: On Submit - After Computations and Validations
         Type: PL/SQL Anonymous Block
         PL/SQL Process:
         COMMIT;
         EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION CLOSE DATABASE LINK DBLINK';
    Conditional Processing
    When Button Pressed (Process After Submit When This Button is Pressed)
         P1_SEARCH_DATA
    6. Apply changes, run the page, and conduct a test.
    I hope this solution is helpful to others.

  • Column links in apex

    hello,
    I have a report in apex. the report shows first name, last name and telephone number.
    I wish to add another column - a link to other page to change the telephone number. but I want the link to be shown only for people who alredy have phone number.
    for example:
    first name: last name: telephone: link:
    Jon White
    Bill Smith 11111 edit(as link)
    I know how to add a column link, and I can write in the Link Text #telephone# but then the result will be:
    first name: last name: telephone: link:
    Jon White
    Bill Smith 11111 11111(as link)
    Do you know how can I do it?
    (btw I use apex 2.1)

    Try with a query like this.
    select fist_name,
    last_name,
    telephone,
    decode(telephone,NULL,' ','Edit') edit
    from emp;
    in the url: replace the page number (27) and the page items as you need.

  • SQL query performance between TOAD and APEX

    Hi Guys,
    I would like to know if there is any performance difference between a simple query run in TOAD and APEX(classic report).
    The reason being, I have a query based on a single table(conataining 15000 rows) which takes almost 30seconds in APEX whereas it takes just 2-3 seconds in TOAD.
    Thanks,
    Raj.

    Varad,
    Thanks for your suggestion.
    I tried changing the pagination but not much it helped.
    Basically I have 5 reports on the same page.
    When the user first navigates to this page then Report-1 is generated first with data as links to other reports.
    So I guess when I click on any of the column links on the Report-1 then the page is refreshed and this time its taking total time for Report-1 and Report-2.
    Is there a possibility that we can circumvent the execution of the first query or cache the results of report-1 so that when the page is refreshed it displays the data from the cache for Report-1 and executes the query for Report-2 ?

  • Deep Linking and NTLM Authentication

    I have an app that uses NTLM Authentication. When I try to pass a parameter from a link in an email, the deep link page opens but the parameter doesn't get set. When i change the Authentication to 'Application Express', the parameter gets set. Is there a work-around for this?

    Scott,
    Thanks for your reply.
    You can see the app here;
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=48061
    Username = dev
    PSW = dev
    I want to bring up a specific employee from an email link like this;
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=48061:4:::::P4_EMPNO:7839
    The deep link and parameters work fine when I use 'Application Express' authentication.
    When I use NTLM authentication, P4_EMPNO never gets set.
    To see the code go into;
    workspace = danmar
    Username = dev
    PSW = dev
    Thanks for your help.
