DB13 vs brbackup

Hi,
In our system, the backups scheduled via txn DB13 are failed with error message: Access to the specified file ordirectory is denied. But if we run the backup from SAP server (login as <sid>adm) using ‘brbackup –u / -c –t online’, the backs were done successfully. So my question is when we set up it from DB13, which domain user SAP uses to start a backup - <sid>adm or SAPService<sid>?
Thanks,
Michelle

Hello Michelle,
Please review the note 651812:
7.  Which operating system and database users should be used with
    BR*TOOLS and SAPDBA?
    o  Operating system users:
       -  WINDOWS:
With a manual call, <sid>adm should be used for all tools. If
you start from DB13, sapservice<sid> is automatically used.
So, the user SAPService<sid> is beingused in DB13.
Regards,
Joe

    As said,
this will not fix your problem, it will avoid additional problems to arise.
If you can do an export of the table this is at least promising.
Try to import the table to a sandbox system, may be utilizing a manual
import with a change of the schema owner so that you do not destroy your sandbox.
    steps required:
create new tablespace PSAPDUMMY on sandbox
create new DB user IMPCHECK on sandbox
create the table in the new tablespace for schema IMPCHECK exactly as it exists in prod.
use native "imp" with FROMUSER= TOUSER=IMPCHECK to import the table to the sandbox.
    Run dbv on the PSAPDUMMY
If you get no corruption, you might get lucky with an export/import approach for production.
    For prod I'd process like:
    - stop sap
    - export table
    - rename table and indexes to dummy names
    - import the table
    - recheck dbv
    - start sap
    - check application
    - if everything is fine (and only then), drop the renamed table

  • Offline Backup in DB13? or UNIX?

    Hi Everyone,
I will be running BRBACKUP offline the first time. I wish to get opinions from experts that have perform this before.
    1. If I run this in DB13, is there any potential problem? BR*Tools is 6.40(42) on R/3 46C.
    2. If I run this in DB13, will SAP be started automatically, be it failure or success? This is a single SAP system, does RECONNECT work automatically? Or I have to do some settings?
    3. Is this BRBACKUP command good enough? My database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode
    >> brbackup -u / -c force -t offline_force -m all -p initPRD.sap.tsm -v T
    4. Where can I find more information on RECONNECT?
My preference is performing it thru DB13, however I am not too sure how good this method is.

    Hi Anne,
    1. If I run this in DB13, is there any potential problem? BR*Tools is 6.40(42) on R/3 46C.
DB13 drives brbackup at the kernel level, there is no problem running your backups using DB13. SAP has provided you the interface to manage the backups.
    2. If I run this in DB13, will SAP be started automatically, be it failure or success? This is a single SAP system, does RECONNECT work automatically? Or I have to do some settings?
If you are running offline backups from DB13, then the database will shutdown, you will be disconnected from SAPGui after the backup starts running and the SAP work processes will be in reconnect status, waiting for database to be open.
It will work automatically, once the backup is complete, the SAP will come up.
    3. Is this BRBACKUP command good enough? My database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode
    >> brbackup -u / -c force -t offline_force -m all -p initPRD.sap.tsm -v T
    The command is:
    brbackup -u / -c force -t offline_force -m all -p init<SID>.sap
Where init<SID>.sap is your SAP profile used to drive the brbackup.
    4. Where can I find more information on RECONNECT?
You can monitor your backup logs in the backup directory:
    /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup
and the work process status in SAP Work directory:
    /usr/sap/<SID>/DVEBMGSNN/work
Once the application comes up, you can look at SM21 to check the status that the work processes were when the backup was running.
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Nisch

    Hello
The previous contributor is correct, the profile is usually read from ORACLE_HOME.  I have never seen this error linking to the Oracle client directory, please double check the following
Ensure that your envirionment variables are correctly set ORACLE_HOME, DIR_LIBRARY
Brtools are always installed on the DB server and can be called from any application server.   if you are scheduling from DB13 on the application server, what is the connection setup?  RSH, RFC,  standalone gateway?
If using a standalone gateway, it must be installed on the DB server, please refer to oss notes #446172, #1025707

  • Change DB13 BRBACKUP parameter

Hi everyone, I have an issue I hope somebody have the answer.
    Scenario Description
    My SAP platform is SAP ECC 5.0 / Windows 2003 SP2 IA64 / Oracle 10G + RAC
I configured a new tape library for backups using HP Dataprotector 6.0
We have some problems first with de DP SAP integration, but we solved them.
So, first I succesfully run the backup from BRTOOLS using the command
    F:\usr\sap\PRD\SYS\exe\run\brbackup.exe -u system/********* -p brtools_rman.sap -c -m all
Then we run succesfully the backup from DP setting in the backup the user system
and setting the integration specific option "-p brtools_rman.sap -c" .
With this backups there is no problem, they ran succesfully and in TCODE DB12 are green.
    The PROBLEM
Ok the issue is when trying to schedule a backup from TCODE DB13, in some point ther is the an error with the backint (end of message).
The only difference is the way they start brtools
    Succesfull command:
    F:\usr\sap\PRD\SYS\exe\run\brbackup.exe -u system/********* -p brtools_rman.sap -c -m all
    Error command:
    brbackup -u / -jid PRTON20081125194451 -c force -t online -p brtools_rman.sap -w use_dbv -m all
The question is how do I modify brbackup parameter in DB13, so I can set the user system?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello,
the SAP way of doing a backup is not to modify DB13, but to make brbackup -u / work.
For a start, I would check permissions of brbackup program, according to SAP note 113747.
    hope this helps
PS: sorry, SAP note 113747 is for Unix.
Please check for similar approach in Windows!

    hi,
    note the following:
    1) you are using windows (there is special behaviour here)
    2) when you run BRBACKUP at os level, you are executing it as user <sid>adm
    3) when you run BRBACKUP from DB13 you are executing it as user SAPService<SID>
    Do you see the difference?
Running BRBACKUP at OS level with user <sid>adm means "nothing" in windows.
Please, check that the user SAPService<SID> has authorizatons on the mentioned files/directories.
    The error
    > BR0253W errno 13: Permission denied
indicates that it does NOT have authorizations

  • Backup with DB13/BRBACKUP

    Hello everyone!
I try to find out whether and how the folder names created by DB13/BRBACKUP (Full and Inkrementelles backup) can be changed. With the parametre "backup_root_dir" (Default: ORACLE_HOME / sapbackup) you can determine, where BRBACKUP should save the database files. Well, in case of a full and incremental backup Oracle creates a funny folder within the "backup_root_dir" directory and I couldn't found out how to change this, within the "backup_root_dir" created directory. I wanted to plan 4 Full backups for a month (always 1 / week namely on Sundays) named <SID> FullBackup1, <SID> FullBackup2, <SID> FullBackup3 and u2026 4. The fifth full backup should overrite the first backup and so long. Every backup should be saved on the disk, it means I'm not gonna use bands (cause this case is an exception). For incremental backups I have planned a similar destiny. The folder which contains the incremental backup should be called similarly (<SID>InkrBackup1, u2026 6)the numbering goes to 6 instead of 4, because the incremental backups are planned daily from Monday to Saturday. Do you have an idea, how to do this? Thanks a lot for your help!!!

no at all:-(Unfortunately, there is no parameter (or at least I couldn't find it) which I could use to define the output directory in which all the database files will be saved (in case of full backup you will find here the conrol files, log files and database files). Cause normally if you make a backup with BRBACKUP or BRTOOLS or DB13, then a
directory will be created in the path defined by the parameter "backup_root_directory"(normally it's "<Oracle_Home>/sapbakup"). This directory has a random name "bjq..." and contains all the mentioned files above. You know at least how to force brbackup to overrite the last full backup? Thx for your help!!!

  • DB13  BRBackup fails with br0227e, but plenty of space.

Hi:  We use DB13 to schedule brbackup as disk backup to our DataDomain DDR (Deduplication device).  However just recently the device filled to 60%.
Brbackup checks the raw space on the device, not the space available considering the great compression we will acheive, and it fails with a BR0227e.  Note 17131 says to run BRbackup with "option -q" which will only issue a warning when space is an issue.  I'd like to do that using DB13 to schedule the backup, but I can't determine how to apply the -q option using DB13.  I thought it might be a parameter for init<SID>.SAP, but I don't know how I would apply the parameter in this parameter file.
How do I apply this parameter?
The other option I suppose, is to create a brbackup script with the option -q and schedule at OS, but I really want to use DB13.

  • Db13 No Detail for Brbackup and Brarchive job

    Hi,
i did a whole database online & redo log backup thru db13 on my bi 7 running on oracle 10.2g.
after the job, i can see 1 arch file (....3718....dbf) in oraarch folder. The job show as finish. I can view the detail log for both brbackup and brarchive.
when i did a restore to a new server, the restore job ask for arch file 3719 that doesn't exist in the oraarch folder.
when i startup, i can see the last brbackup and brarchive, but the job show as finish with error. No detail log for both brbackup and brarchive. I check, both sapbackup and saparchive folders exist.
    My question:
    - why did the job show as finish with error?
    - why no detail shown for brbackup and brarchive?
    - why did the restore job ask for arch file that doesn't exist?
    - how so that i can see the same view as in the original?
    thank you.
    regards,
    zl

    ZL,
I would suggest you to go through the sapbackup directory (on source server) for the log information. In the meantime, if you know the exact timings you may want to try for oracle time based recovery. Remember this time has to be just before 3719 dbf.
    Example:
    SQL> STARTUP MOUNT
    SQL> RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL TIME '2009-03-21:11:00:00';
    SQL> ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
    Hope this helps.

  • BRBACKUP fails with DB13 and TIVOLI on AIX and ORACLE

    Hi,
We have the Tivoli setup for SAP on AIX and Oracle.
when we run the brbackup directly we are able to get it through. But when we do the same with DB13 and Tivoli attached we are not able to get through and it throws an error.
Would be very nice and kind of you if you could share your setup knowledge with me regarding Tivoli and SAP.
    Thanks & Regards

Unfortunately nobody here has a crystal ball to look into and see what is happening on your system in both cases.
We could ask you "have you done this" or "did you configure that" but it´s very cumbersome.
So please: provide logfiles of failed attempts if there is "an error" so we see which error it is and we can see if we can help.

1.It seems the correct control file can not been found.
I have checked the file "initDEV.ora" and spfile. In them the positions of control file are  "/origlogA/cntrl","/origlogB/cntrl" and "/sapdata1/cntrl".
So I donot know why the process of DB13 cannot find the correct control file and search the file CTL1DEV.ORA.
Because the correct control file could not been backuped,I can not restore and recover the database.
    What causes it?

    Praveen,
I had the same problem as Ryan and Gary on a new XI \ Oracle 10g installation and your suggestion did solve this.  It seems that when you run the first BRTOOLS based backup, Oracle tries to create a PFILE from the automatically generated SPFILE, but the DB user doesn't have rights to delete the SAP.ORA file.  Once you assign SAP_<SAPSID>_GOBALADMIN full rights to the Oracle folder, an updated INIT<SID>.ORA is generated and the default SAP.ORA is deleted on the next BRTOOLS backup run.
    Thanks for the tip.

    Andrew

    Hi,
not sure if the recommendations given will address this issue.
    You are getting this error:
BR0301E SQL error -1017 at location BrDbConnect-2, SQL statement:
    'CONNECT /'
    ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
    the log file indicates:
    > No application server found on database host - rsh/gateway will be used
This indicated that the user that is connecting from the AS to the DB server is not properly configured to perform the DB tasks on it.
So, first question would be to know if you have configured a gateway on the DB server and how, or if you are using remote shell.
Second question, you can do backups on the DB server.
    > I can run backupjob sucessfully directly from BRtools on database server
How did you run exactly the backup job (what is the exact command line, what is the exact OS user that executed it)?
What is the OS of the DB server?
I have reread your post, your OS is windows therefore you fall in the "typical" error in Windows.
You have executed your backup as <sid>ADM and it works. Unfortunatelly, in windows, SAP is exectuted by SAPSERVICE<sid>, and this is the user who should be connecting to your DB server, and this is the user who cannot execute the backup.
The fact that you can run the backup with <sid>ADM in Windows does not means that you have SAPService<sid> properly configured.
For the error (see before) I think your ops$ user for this user is not properly configured in the DB server. take a look at the note mentioned by KT and pay attention to the SAPSERVICE<sid> configuration
