DB2 offline backup

I am very new to DB2 and need to schedule an offline backup for one of our system. I am running DB2 v9.7.0.3 and AIX 6.1 for SAP ERP6.
I checked that from db13 we can schedule only online backups.
I checked for db2cc command that I was aware of but it seems that is deprecated. The new version for IBM Data Studio (free/standalone) cannot schedule backups. The product Optim Database Administrator needs separate license for purchase. My db2 is running on OEM license (under SAP).
Can you please suggest me what paramters do I need to modify / recommended way for me to schedule a one time  'offline' backup at some particular time.
Also, can you recommend me any other jobs that can be run (reorg/dbstats)  ?

Thank you d/b backup worked fine (I haven't tried the restore yet but I have one big file that was created by backup).
I could find two relevant options in db13...
reorg of all tables in tablespace
reorgchk
Can you kindly help with the below  :
1. Please tell me how can I run runstats for all tables in database :-o. There is no such option...
2. what is meant by reorgchk... Does reorg mean that the data fragments will be consolidated (collected) and placed together ?
3. I am not able to find any related entries in db2diag.log... Can you tell me what entries should typically appear there ? Any specific string that I can search for ?
4. Is there some place I can search for  'easy and simple -- beginner level' explanation of the db2 architecture.. like, File system structure (sqllib, db2dump etc).. as in what are they used for ? and for the db2 processes like db2fm ? The IBM site seems to present it in too specific and complex language.
Thanks

  • Log files can be applied after an offline backup is restored?

When reading the Admin Guide I see above possibility.
I guess in that case the offline backup must be done in the Database Maintenance Mode: QUIESCE.
I think if the offline backup is done after the DB is shutdown, no log files can be applied.
Would you please confirm and share your experience on this?
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Jennifer,
only to complete the answer of Jens, or "say" it less complex:
1.) Yes you could roll forward an offline backup. DB2 always end in rollforward pending state after a restore independent of the backup type (online | offline). In case of an offline backup you could complete the restore without logs, otherwise not.
2.) The offline backup is done in a special mode, it is neither online nor quiesced. Nobody can log on to the database as long the offline backup is running. To start the offline backup, you have to deactivate the database as described by Jens.
    Best regards
    Ralph

    Hello Mohan,
Here we can see that the backup did eventually complete:
Backup successful. The timestamp for this backup image is : 20100807220016 Backup size is : 107000 MB
However there had been some issues to deactivate/activate the database .
As note 594353 states , this is normal and on occurance of this event
the corresponding action is retried up to 10 times .
    You can check this via
    1. db2diag.log
    2. List history backup commands
    3. db2ckbkp ... DB2 Check backup command
You can ensure that the backup did complete.

    Hello All,
While triggering offline backup getting the below error

How to proceed in this case.
    Kindly assist.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Sridhar

State 0x4000 means Offline and Not Accessible. A table space is in this state if there is a problem with one or more of its containers. A container might be inadvertently renamed, moved, or damaged.
You need first check on OS level whether the disk has been damanged.
After the problem has been rectified, and the containers that are associated with the table space are accessible again, this abnormal state can be removed by disconnecting all applications from the database and then reconnecting to the database. Alternatively, you can issue an ALTER TABLESPACE statement, specifying the SWITCH ONLINE clause, to remove the Offline and Not Accessible state from the table space without disconnecting other applications from the database.
If the error can not be fixed, you may need database restore, at least tablespace restore to rescue the database.

  • Configure Offline Backup using db13

    Hey Experts,
I am new to db2. Currently the database is running in nolog mode. So only offline backup can be taken. But Offline backup cannot be scheduled using db13 for db2.
I need help to change the parameters in db2.Currently the databse is in no log mode.I will have to change to a log mode to enable online backup. I would need a step by step guidance for that part.
PS: I am normally generous with points
Edited by: Atrai Mukherjee on Feb 14, 2008 1:24 PM

As of SAP Netweaver 7.0 SP12 and SAP systems based on kernel 7.10, The DBA Planning Calendar backup job does no longer support offline backups. Any offline backup, which has already been scheduled, will automatically be converted into an online backup with the INCLUDE LOGS option.
It is always recommended to configure SAP Database to run in archive log mode.
When a log file is filled with records, the db2logmgr is called by the database to copy the log file into the directory of the db cfg parameter LOGARCHMETH1/2. The copied log file is the offline log. When all referenced pages have been written from the buffer pool(s) to disk, the online log file is ready for renaming in the log_dir directory. A copy remains as an offline log in the archive directory.
Log files that reside in the archive directory can be archived to storage with db2tapemgr.
The initial setting of the DB CFG parameters LOGARCHMETH1 (and, if necessary, LOGARCHMETH2) has to be changed after the installation to enable roll-forward recovery. To view the logging configuration of your database, call transaction ST04, choose Backup and Recovery → Logging Parameters or use
    the following command:
db2 get db cfg for <dbsid>
To change the logging configuration to the productive logging mode you have to
    issue the following command:
    db2 .update db cfg for <dbsid> using LOGARCHMETH1 disk:<archive destination>.
After updating db2 database parameter for logarchiving , shutdown SAP and deactivate db2 to take offline backup.
If you do not enable archive log point in time recovery is not possible and you have to shutdown SAP and deactivate database everytime you take offline backup.
    Best Regards
    Ashraf

  • Offline Backup in SQL Database using DB13

    Hi experts,
I am new to MSSQL database.
We are using ECC 6 with MSSQL 2005. In DB13 we get the following options.
    Full Database backup
    Diff DB backup
    Transaction Log Backup
    Check DB consistency
We do not have the option to take a offline backup from DB13.
My question is, weather it is possible to take a offline backup in MSSQL.
If yes could please give me the procedure for doing a offline backup using DB13.
Thanks in advance for the response.
    Regards
    Anil

Lol, No by definition SAP and SQL would need to be down to take that type of file backup.
Offline backups are not a supported recovery method.
Online backups will allow for PIT or full recovery.
Offline backups will not be report in SQL or SAP as you haven't backup the database - rather just the files.

  • System is not coming up in MSCS environment after offline backup from DB13

    Hi All,
SAP system is not coming up after DB offline backup from DB13.
Here are the details of system. SAP XI 3.0 SR1 NW04 running on Microsoft clustered environment windows 2003 and Oracle 9.2.0.6.
    My observations:-
    1. All the services of cluster admin was up except XE1.World when DB offline backup completed (executed through DB13).
    2. services.msc entry OracleXE1920TNSListener (automatic start) and OracleServiceXE1 (automatic start) was down.
and sqlplus "/as sysdba" was failing with ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
Please note gw/netstat_once parameter is alredy there with value 0.
Further I would like to add, when I started cluster admin service XE1.World by right click - bring online, services.msc entry OracleServiceXE1 came up, but OracleXE1920TNSListener was still down, then I started listener from cmd mode lsnrctl start.
    Kindly suggest.

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the valuable input.
We have already implemented note 378648 i.e these all parameters are already there under sidadm user in DB node.

    BR_OFS_DOMAIN=<domain>
    BR_OFS_PWD=<password>
registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Oracle/HomeX ORA_<SID>_AUTOSTART is having value false.
Please guide what could be the other possible reason?

  • Errors in Offline Backup via DB13 SAP & Oracle on Linux

OS: Linux Database : Oracle Systems Affected : Production & Disaster Recovery Server
    Hi
We have offline backup scheduled every friday via SAP the backup runs fine & copies all the files in the backup directory but when i go see the backup logs in DB 14 i see the Offline Backup ending with Error Code 0005 & when i see the Detail logs i see following in red
    BR0278E Command output of '/oracle/UHP/102_64/bin/sqlplus /nolog < /oracle/UHP/sapbackup/.beelhrfo.spi':
    BR0279E Return code from '/oracle/UHP/102_64/bin/sqlplus /nolog < /oracle/UHP/sapbackup/.beelhrfo.spi': 0
BR0302E SQLPLUS call for database instance UHP failed
BR0306E Start and open of database instance UHP failed
Also if i check the BRARCHIVE i see them ending with following errors in Detail Log
    BR0278E Command output of 'LANG=C cd /oracle/UHP/sapreorg && LANG=C cp spaceUHP.log paramUHP.log /backup/UHPARCH//UHP':
cp: cannot create regular file `/backup/UHPARCH//UHP/spaceUHP.log': Permission denied
cp: cannot create regular file `/backup/UHPARCH//UHP/paramUHP.log': Permission denied
    BR0280I BRARCHIVE time stamp: 2010-10-30 23.02.40
    BR0279E Return code from 'LANG=C cd /oracle/UHP/sapreorg && LANG=C cp spaceUHP.log paramUHP.log /backup/UHPARCH//UHP': 1
BR0222E Copying space_log to/from /backup/UHPARCH//UHP failed due to previous errors
    BR0202I Saving /oracle/UHP/saparch/aeelofvf.svd

    BR0202I Saving /oracle/UHP/saparch/archUHP.log
    BR0203I to /backup/UHPARCH//UHP ...
    BR0278E Command output of 'LANG=C cp /oracle/UHP/saparch/archUHP.log /backup/UHPARCH//UHP':
cp: cannot create regular file `/backup/UHPARCH//UHP/archUHP.log': Permission denied

    BR0279E Return code from 'LANG=C cp /oracle/UHP/saparch/archUHP.log /backup/UHPARCH//UHP': 1
BR0222E Copying /oracle/UHP/saparch/archUHP.log to/from /backup/UHPARCH//UHP failed due to previous errors
Please also note that we have a Disaster Recovery Server too & the above mentioned errors are in our (Production )Primary Database & once this backu finished the DR Server stops getting any log files, this happens only when this offline backup on every friday runs,
    Issues
The backup ends with errors although the backup file is generated & all data is copied
DR Server dont get redo log files after this offline backup on every friday

for the Cp errors i will see the permissions in backup/UHP ( this error is happening in online backup ) my main concern is the error occured in offline backup as it is somehow connected with our DR SERVER NOT GETTING THE LOG FILES EVEN AFTER THE SYSTEM IS UP ( yes if the primary is down no logs will be shipped to standby i know that but even after the primary is up after a offline backup via SAP via DB 13 the standby dont get any log files unless i restart the database and SAP )
So the error in the offline backup mentioned above in my post occurred at 29 OCT 15: 45  20
BR0302E SQLPLUS call for database instance UHP failed
BR0306E Start and open of database instance UHP failed
after this my primary database comes up & sap starts but the DR server dont get any logs & also the backup logs show the above errors in red
Given below is the text from Oracle alert file for the same time duration when the system tries to start the database & the above mentioned error comes up in opening the database time Stamp : OCT 29 15: 45 20
Deprecated system parameters with specified values:
    log_archive_start
End of deprecated system parameter listing
This is the only oracle alert log errors i can find relevant to database instance errors from DB 14
moreover in the alert file it also starts the data broker service relevant to i guess DR server in that all seems fine it starts everything then it gives this error & then keeps giving errors ( from oracle alert log file )
Error 12154 received logging on to the standby
    Fri Oct 29 15:45:37 2010
    Errors in file /oracle/UHP/saptrace/background/uhp_arc0_12086.trc:

    Fri Oct 29 15:45:37 2010

& then keep on saying given below error in oracle alert log file
    Fri Oct 29 15:51:32 2010
    Errors in file /oracle/UHP/saptrace/background/uhp_arc8_12102.trc:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
PING[ARC8]: Heartbeat failed to connect to standby 'UHR'. Error is 12154.
Thanks for your help again i would appreciate a little more assistance on this.

  • SAP  Whole Offline Backup

    Hi team,
Here we are working on Windows 2003 server with oracle 10g as database. Here i have a requirement of taking an offline backup with SAPMMC stopped. I need to take backup to an external harddisk which is of 35 GB.My Whole dtabse online + redo log back up is working fine from db13 t.code.
Can some one kindly tell me what is the process for tacking a whole databse offline backup to an external harddisk or local harddisk with the help of BRTOOLs.
    Please help.

    Dear Chiranjeevi,
To take an offline backup below are some points
    1) Login as <SID>ADM
    2) You have change the below parameter in init<SID>.SAP  profile.
    backup_type = offline
    backup_dev_type = Disk
    backup_root_dir = <Path_Backup_Folder>
    3) Stop SAP from MMC.
    4) Stop the database from SQLPLUS.(In windows youe have
to stop the database from SQLPLUS).
    5) Stop Listener.
    6) Start BR*tools
    7) Enter choice 4 Databse Copy & Backup
    8) Enter Choice 1 Database Backup.
    Hope this will help.
    Thanks

  • SAP Full Offline Backup Problem

    Hi all,
I am a newbie to SAP.
I was attempting an Full Offline Backup through the DB13 transaction.
SAP is installed in a RHEL Cluster with Oracle DB 10gR2.
Because of Cluster Operation the Full Offline Backup is not performed successfully because when Oracle DB is shutdown during backup in the first node, the cluster automatically raises the service in the 2nd node and after copying files when the DB is tried to start on the first node it raises an error.
Is there a manner to notify also the other cluster nodes about the Full Offline backup in order not to start the DB and to perform the backup successfully.
    Drini

No I want to schedule the offline backup to a regular intervals for example once a month
Can this cluster monitoring be scheduled automatically from SAP or can SAP notify Linux Cluster not to treat this as an "Oracle Down" situation but as a mainteinance in order not to start the Oracle to the other cluster node.
    Best Regards,
    Drini

    br*tools will automatically run
    create pfile from spfile;
maybe the user running br*tools is not allowed to write the pfile (has no write access to %ORACLE_HOME%\database directory.
please check the security settings of this directory it has to have read/write access for sidadm and sapservicesid or one of the groups they are member in.
best would be to allow ORA_SID_DBA and ORA_SID_OPER groups full access on this directory.
