DBA Job Profile as Career

Hi Guys
I am currently working on PL/SQL and ORACLE Database. I am thinking of choosing Oacle DBA as my career path.
I'd like to know how's the growth of DBA's (in terms of salary) and scope in IT industry (in INDIA) compare to other IT job profile .
I heard that DBA's have to work for long hours , it's kind of boring job ,DBA's have to provide support 24 hours and there is no personal life for DBA's, Is it true guys?
I want to know how is DBA's job profile considering salary , personal life and all other aspects so I can choose DBA path on long term basis.
Please give me your suggestion guys.

I heard DBA's have to work 24*7 in shifts to maintain databases in Production Environment. All DBA's have to do so or there are other scenarios also.
And in which case or what kind of project DBA's work in normal working hours.
Please Guide
"I heard "
============================================================================
Guy: Where did you hear that?
Girl: On the internet
Guy: And you believed it?
Girl: Sure. They can't put anything on the internet that isn't true
Guy: Where did you hear that?
Girl: On the internet.  Oh, here comes my date.  I met him on the internet.  He's a French Model.

Well, that pretty well sums it up ... either all DBA's work 24*7 ... or they don't.
Don't you suppose that what is required of a DBA .. of anyone .. at a particular company ... at any company ... depends on the particular company and it's business requirements?
============================================================================
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."
(Lewis Carroll - Through the Looking Glass)
And so it is with job titles.  Any given job title means only and exactly what the organization chooses it to mean -- "neither more nor less".
============================================================================
You have to ask yourself why you think you want to become a dba .. or any other profession.   Is it for the money?  Do you enjoy walking a tightrope without  a net?  Is the money worth it?  I've been reading a lot of Benjamin Franklin lately.  One of his favorite phrases is "don't spend too much for the whistle."  Or one of my favorites, "Don't spend you life climbing a ladder just to discover it was leaning against the wrong wall."

  • Oracle DBA Jobs

    Hello All,
Please don't mind my question if I have violated the purpose of the forum and if so then I am really sorry.
I have been working in Oracle Database Administration since almost 3.4 years. I have mostly worked on Dev-Test Platforms where we maintain zero downtime. I do not have any hands on RAC or much knowledge . I have worked on 10g,11g.
I know the concepts and methods of implementing Data guard (standby), I have worked on RMAN(duplication, incremental backup,complete/incomplete recovery and etc),expdp/impdp and exp/imp, little amount of scripting (SQL/Shell), basic Server management(mostly have exp on Linux), Installation of RDBMS/ASM, Creation of Databases(manually/DBCA), Security(privs, roles, auditing), Tablespace and other logical structure management, HOT backup,Cold backup(and restoration from it), Database upgradation, patching(PSU, one-off,inventory attach/detach), Tracing, SQL Loader, standby monitoring and creation, Database Monitoring and maintenance, segment management and defragmentation, Database object maintenance, Configuration of OEM etc, handling different types of Oracle errors including critical errors like 600,7445 etc... Reading and extracting AWR/ASH..
Can I get a job outside of my present company? As I am not seeing much growth there.. Not even getting to have exposure to other platforms.. Most of the companies want RAC personal.
Please suggest and help me (if possible).. I am really in tension about what will be there in my future as here I will never get to work in RAC and high availibility architecture ..
That is the reason now I am thinking to switch my company for better technological growth..
What areas should I know in this phase of my career. pls suggest.. I am from INDIA
    -Regards
    Struggling DBA

Whether you will get another job is an entirely local matter. Ask a local recruiter how the job market is for DBAs. In my local area (in the US), it seems like there is a decent amount of demand for DBAs, but you might be working in a local economy that is stagnant.
Chances are, in 2013, that any new DBA job will involve some element of database redundancy.
Within a few years, I suspect that most places will have either RAC or Exadata systems for their critical databases. It'll probably take a significant outage before most companies will spend the cash for clustered systems, but they will eventually move that way. Even Oracle's Database Machine is a RAC configuration if you think about it - and that's what they're trying to pitch to the smaller customers.
I remember that about 10 years ago, RAC was rare (I remember installing RAC 9.2.0.1 for a client - boy, that was DIFFICULT). 'All' that you had to do to be a DBA then, was understand single-instance stuff.
Five years later, most DBAs needed to know RAC/ASM/Data Gurd if they wanted to be Production DBAs - they then had to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM and Data Guard stuff.
I can see that within a couple of years, DBAs will have to be competent in Exadata or similar - so they'll need to understand single-instance, cluster, ASM, Data Guard AND Exadata stuff (networking, storage cells, etc).
My point is that the DBA role changes as fast as any tech specialty. Thankfully, Oracle's is making things easier to administer as the technologies we have to master become more complex: I can vouch for how difficult 9.2.0.1 was to set up for RAC - managing an 11.2 system is SO much nicer!
Unless you're working in a place that have no plans to upgrade their databases (due to legacy systems) or to grow as a business, then the chances are you will eventually be exposed to what you're looking for. Of course, if you're working in such a place, then it might be suggested that you're better off finding somewhere else to work. To stand still is to roll backwards, etc....
Good luck. It's good to be ambitious, but don't forget that a DBA role is one that absolutely demands experience - if you've 3 years of being a Production DBA and having to get THAT call in the middle of the night, you've probably got better experience than someone who has spent 6 years as a Development DBA (IMO).

  • How to get that dba job

    Hi All,
I am a dba rookie holding an OCA. Due to my limited experience I am finding it very difficult to get that job. A lot of the junior dba jobs posted on job sites are fake. How can I offer my services to employers directly? It has been a very long time since I am sitting at home, going through oracle documentation and playing with the databases I have at home.
    Please help me.

I am definitely no career counselor so this might be meaningful as career advice from the guy with the squeegee at the stop light. There are a lot of answers to your question and this just my "pointer." (Basically the "foot in the door" trick.)
Are you limiting your search entirely to jobs posted as DBA jobs? You may want to look for other positions you are qualified for in the companies you are interested in. Even if means entering the company below (entry-level) where you feel you should be. If you have experience and a degree in a related field you might search in that area first. In some companies positions like Business Analyst get you direct exposure to the people and experience you need for your resume. Or you might look for something along internship, contract, or temporary lines to get you in.

When uploading my formatted resume to my Apple Jobs profile, I am always presented with a c:\fakepath message and the resume does not upload. How can I rectify this?

Add this one to the list of thinks that don't work on the Apple Job Board. It looks like Apple is using ADP's VE (Virtual Edge) technology to run this system, and I've been stupified by the number of features that are just broken, or so poorly thought out by ADP as to be unusable, (certainly for webkit and mozilla browsers at least: I didn't bother checking IE.)
    Here are a few highlights:
"My Job List", list of jobs applied for, seems to max out at three. You can apply for more than that, but you can only see the first three.
"Search Using Your Resume" feature yields few or no results, even when the pasted text contains only common, exactly matched words like 'Design' or 'Engineer'.
The missing resume upload, described in this thread.
"My Job Agent" seems to never flag anything, at least it hasn't ever for me despite pretty loose criteria.
Agent's created using "My Job Agent" eventually just disappear, which is fine because they don't seem to work.
When updating a profile, acknowledging the 'Terms' happens twice in a row.
Job seekers can only supply one cover letter despite being able apply for several jobs.
Pagination for search results only appears at the top of the page, so it's necessary to scroll down through each page, then up to the top again to proceed to the next page.
Well, I'm sure there are others, but you get the idea. I hope the Apple folks can fix this, (or twist ADP's arm to fix it,) so it better represents the quality of experience that Apple is so respected for consistently delivering.

  • DBA jobs...Advise plz

    Hi All ,
I am struggling to find Jr Oracle DBA jobs in the current market . I have done my Masters here in US but I haven't been successful in finding a Jr Oracle DBA job here . I have around 1 yr of experience as a DBA . Can you please guide me into finding a suitable DBA job .
    Advise is honestly appreciated.
    Thanks!!!!!!!!

I agree with Helio Dias' suggestion to seek out helping some non-profit organizations, but of course, that won't pay back your student loan or pay your rent.
You may consider applying yourself to the various staffing agencies (job shops). They have a myriad of job opportunities, and many of them specifically looking for Jr. DBAs. I know at our company, I personally had a posting for a Jr. DBA which we eventually filled through a staffing agency.
I don't see where you are from, but in our area, some of the more commonly known agencies are: TechUSA, TEAM, TAC, AeroTek, Maxim Group, NRI (Network Resources Inc.), SAIC, and countless others. Do a google search on staffing agencies <your town>.
Many of the jobs are temporary, but many of them are temp-to-perm. And don't discount the temporary jobs because you will learn a lot and gain a lot of diversified experience from them.
    Good luck.

As am a Commerce graduate with sound IT background (had a little  experience in server). Will this job fit for me .do this job has good scope.

Your question is very difficult since you didn´t provide any real data.
Looks like you would work as a junior functional FICO guy, that means you will do all the invoicing, workflows, prints etc. Together with the technical side they ask you to learn, you will be able to support users, became an internal consultant or be able to offer your knowledge to the customer which ue SAP as a SAP consultant. Don´t worry, since it is a nice job. I mean it is a demanding one, but I find it very rewarding, itis well paid I believe, you wil have many options how to advance or change your careerin the future etc.
If you can get the job, get it and come back withmore specific questions.

I tried to manually get back to 10.9.2 without using Timemachine and everytime I reinstalled the OS it would always take me back to 10.9.3.  I ended up going to the Apple store (my MBP has AppleCare) and ask the Apple rep about this and was told that when you reinstall it will always have the most recent updates (in this case 10.9.3).
I ended up doing a backup of my MAC and leaving it with apple so that they could do an intensive diagnostic test.  I was told it passed and HW is fine, so they wiped the HDD and reinstalled.  I get it back today and will let you know how it goes.
Moral of the story; always use Timemachine, even before you turn on the device, have a USB drive (or similar) ready.

  • How to know how long the dba jobs ran?

How would I know how long the dba jobs ran.I am not sure about dba_jobs.total_time.Is there any way or data dictionary to find the how long the dba jobs ran?

    Hi,
Oracle recommends use of dbms_scheduler rather than dbms_job on 10g or higher.
If you do switch to dbms_scheduler, run duration for all job runs is available in the all_scheduler_job_run_details view and the run duration of the last job run is available from the all_scheduler_jobs views.
This is one of the several benefits to switching to dbms_scheduler.
    Hope this helps,
    Ravi.
