DBCA: Issue Creating a cluster database in RAC

Hello Expert,
We encountered some issues while trying to create a cluster database. The issue is:
When running DBCA to create a cluster database, we seem unable to bring up the screen where we can choose "Oracle Real Application Cluster database". It only allows us to create single instance database. We must have missed some steps. Any suggestions?
1. Below are the specs:
* OS: Enterprise Linux Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (October Update 6) 2.6.9 67.0.15.0.1.ELsmp
* Oracle Version: 10.2.0.3 with cluster on 2 nodes (for example: xxx1 and xxx2)
* CRS version: 10.2.0.3
* Running ASM with DATA, REDO, TEMP, FRA diskgroups
* OCR and Voting disk on shared raw devices
2. Results from running crs_stat

Until you provide some hints about operating system for each of the RAC machines, the networking you have installed (and whether you have the interconnect running), the shared disk mechanism (and whether it is confirmed shared raw or ASM), the Oracle software versions, whether your systems passed cluster verify ... we would be wasting our time guessing.

  • Differences in creating a Standby database in RAC

    Hi All
       SO...: Solaris 11 SPARC 64
       DB...: 11.2.0.3.6 (64 bits)
My experience regarding creating Physical Standby Databases is restricted in only single instances to single instances. I am reading the book "Oracle Database 11g Release 2 High Availability", but, in parallel, i would like to hear from the experienced DBAs here some opinions and recomendations in how to implement a RAC to RAC solution. Below are my doubts:
       1) In single instance, using RMAN Backup to create the Physical Standby, i have to create manually a static Listener Entry. But in a RAC env, the listener is a resource, so, i have to create that resource in the Clusterware manually, or there is other approach?
       2) I have to create a pfile and start the instance in NOMOUNT mode, but in RAC, i have to start all the nodes in NOMOUNT, or just one node is sufficient?
       3) The archives will be replicated from FRA to FRA. Is this the best approach?
My main concern is with the Listener and SCAN questions... If you have any considerations, they will be most welcome.
       Thanks in advance.

  • Issues creating VSA cluster "Unknown value" error

    Hi all,
I'm in the process of evaluating vSphere with VSA and running into an issue during creation of the VSA cluster. On the final step of creating the VSA cluster, I get an error message "Cannot create VSA cluster: Unknown value."
I'm setting up a two node cluster using a couple of HP ML310e Gen8's, using local storage and some extra networking via a quad-port NIC. Memory, CPU clock speed, and number of NICs is compliant with VSA requirements.
I've already double checked things like default gateway on the Management Network, naming of the various port groups to comply with what vSphere/VSA expects, specific NIC teaming requirements, and increased maximum heap size to 256 & set evc.config.baseline=highest in dev.properties as I've got a couple of VMs running on the two ESX servers (just Domain Controller and vCenter VMs).
Per the screenshots below, I've setup vSwitch0 and vSwitch1 as per VMware recommendations.
    On vSwitch0:
Management Network and VSA-Front End portgroups are using native VLAN (192.168.1.0/24).
VM Network is using VLAN 110 (192.168.110.0/24).
    vSwitch1 is fairly self-explanatory.
Only unique thing is that I've created 'vCenter VM VLAN' on vSwitch0 as a Virtual Machine portgroup so that I could assign this to the vCenter VM NIC as I don't have routing/ACLs in place between VM Network (VLAN 110) and Management Network (native VLAN).
Also, on ESX node # 2 I've got an issue with the physical NIC's associated with vmnic1 and vmnic3 (they seems to hang my Cisco switch each time I plug them in) so I've used the physical NIC's associated with vmnic4 and vmnic5 instead.
I've already searched the various VSA related threads but to no avail.
Hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this one.

  • Create database on RAC environment - DBCA hangs on clone database creation

    Hi, friends!
I have two vm´s (vmware 2) with OEL 5 installed.
I´ve installed OGI and database software sucessfully. So, my crs stack is working fine in both two nodes.
However, when i use DBCA to create a database in this RAC environment, it hangs when it gets on "clone database creation", about 52% of the progress bar.
My DBCA logs don´t point any error out. It just hangs on..
I wait about 4 hours and it doesn´t move on.
I searched and found many cases like that, including here in OTN. But it seems nobody could find a resolution to this issue.
Is there any bug about OEL 5 and database 11gR2??
    More details:
I apllied the patch "p8670579_112010_LINUX" on both OGI installation (before root.sh) and databae software install (also before root.sh).
    Everything worked fine.
    Sorry for the grammar errors.

you can trace dbca, and you can found witch step is occurs problem.
can you paste here last 15-20 sentence of dbca trace file?

  • Issue creating a database: SGA_MAX_SIZE and SGA_TARGET

    Hello:
While creating a custom database, I am running into issues with the values I specify for SGA_MAX_SIZE and SGA_TARGET.
The install manual for the product I am creating the database for says that SGA_MAX_SIZE should be >= SGA_TARGET_SIZE. It also wants a minimum of 1Gig for SGA_Target
The Database Configuration Assistant defaulted to 0.64GB for SGA_TARGET and 0.168 for SGA_MAX_SIZE (This is clearly against the instruction in the installation manual).
Who is right? Me or the vendor?
I read some threads that indicate that the vendor may be wrong.
    venki

    Follow the vendor's instructions.
DBCA has never in its existence made a correct decision yet. It puts all control files and redo logs into one directory.
It doesn't create multiple members for the log file groups.
And its memory management is based on a simple algorithm that has nothing to do with any specific reality.
DBCA is intended for creating a generic database for generic purposes ... and that it does very very well.

  • Multiple Single Instance DB Conversion to Cluster Database RAC

    Hi,
    Good Day.
we are in planning phase to perform an activity, in which 8 existing (Single Instance) and 1 new database will be consolidated in ONE Oracle RAC Cluster database.
Kindly share your ideas, to perform the consolidation smoothly with minimal downtime.
can any one share the cons/pros, what if we create MULTIPLE RAC cluster databases instead of one cluster database?
    Thank You.
    Regards,

The cons are pretty much the same as running multiple instances on a single server: Tuning will be much harder because you will have to look for bottleneck and depletion of common resources (CPU, RAM, IO) across all your instances instead of one (where you have lots of nice and integrated features). There is the potential for contention between resources and since each instance/database has its own SGA (and they are not shared) you will potentially waste a lot of ram for stuff that is redundant between the instances.
But if you still think this is something you want to do, you should take a look at the 'server pool' feature. It will give you some more control over how your databases/instances should be ditributed across your rac (there is propably no need for all databases to be running on all servers at the same time)

  • Does anybody know how we can blackout a RAC cluster database?

When attempting to start a blackout for a cluster database we get the message:
"<DB NAME>" is a cluster target, hence skipping it. Please use EM console.
Is there an api to allow us to do this from a script just prior to a scheduled refresh?

Apparantly Oracle thinks its a feature:
    Symptoms
    Grid Control 10.2.0.2
    Agent 10.2.0.2
Cluster RAC database 10.2.0.2 or 9.2.0.6
The command line 'emctl start blackout test <RAC database target>' fails to initiate a blackout
against a cluster database target, returning the message "<EM102:rac_database>" is a cluster
target, hence skipping it. Please use EM console.
A blackout for the same target type is established successfully using the EM console.
    Cause
The emctl utility cannot be used to control blackouts for clustered targets.
This is a limitation when using emctl to control blackouts against clustered targets, because the
command needs to be issued simultaneously on all the agents in the cluster.
    Solution
To implement the solution, please execute the following steps:
    1. Use the EM Console to establish the blackout for clustered targets. You will find the Black Out
option in the General section on the home page of any application server target. For composite
targets like OracleAS Farms, you will find this option in the Administration tab.

  • Create application from database issues

Just trying out the 'Create application from database'
    feature and found the following.
    Running:
    Vista
Flex Builder 3 Public Beta 2
    Visual Studio 2008
    - The wizard cant find the development web server so IIS is
the only choice. I assume VS2005 & 2008 are different.
    - When validating the IIS option it would always fail until I
    enabled directory browsing (IIS 7).
    - When creating a SQL connection the wizard will not connect
to a SQL 2005 named instance. Tried 'localhost\instance' and
'hostname\instance' and get the following error.
    java.sql.SQLException: Unknown server host name

  • Issues creating cluster on WLS 6.0

I am new to weblogic domain , so plz bear if some questions are too obvious.
Just a breif description of what i am trying to do:
To start wiith I want to just cluster two servers that host a Stateless Session EJB
              and configure round-robin load-balancing .
I also want to test that when one of the servers is unavailable the client request
is still served by the other server in the cluster.
              I have 2 weblogic 6.0 running on m/cs xyz032 and xyz019 , both on port 7001
              I am jotting down the issues/insight that i have/need :
              1. I use the server on my m/c xyz032 (port 7001) as the admin server (mydomain>Servers>myserver).
First question (Can a admin participate in the cluster ??)
              2. To make the server on m/c xyz019 as a part of the cluster , As far as i understand
i have to create a server first from the admin server so that it shows up
in the list of available servers. So that when you create a Cluster you can choose
from the list of available servers. (FYI I am using the GUI Admin to configure this)
But when i try to create a server , it only takes a name and port number. How do
i create a new server that points to the server running on xyz019 (ip say xxx.x.xx.xxx).
I also tried creating a new machine but that too does not take an ip address for
              the remote m/c.
              3. When i create a cluster from the admin GUI , it asks for a name(fine) and cluster
              address .
I read the documentation that states it can be an ip address (not sure which ) .
Do i need to give the comma separated ip addresses of both the servers taking part
              in the cluster ???
              4. Is it mandatory that servers to be clustered be running on the same port ?
              5. The document says that the object (EJB)to be clustered should be deployed to both
the servers ( I agree, no doubt about it)
But the deployment option on the GUI also lets me deploy to the cluster . Does that
mean if i choose the deployment target to be cluster then the admin will deploy the
bean to all the servers taking part in the cluster.
I feel your experience with this will help me in a head start .
              Thanks
              Ashok Shamnani

              Thanks Kumar.
Also like to add here ,
when i start a managed server passing the arguments as the ip of the admin server
, the managed server(the remote server) shows up in the admin server. Once it shows
up then i can assign it to a cluster or do whatever deployments i want to.

  • 2012 R2 - First cluster, having issues creating Quorum witness disk

Its my first Server 2012 R2 Cluster and its based on a Dell VRTX server with shared storage.
I've created the cluster and I'm now trying to setup the Quorum witness disk.
In FCM Storage/Disks a 600mb disk is shown as online and I've called it Quorum.
In Win Disk Manager this disk shows as offline and reserved.
When I run the 'Configure Cluster Quorum Settings' wizard, pick 'Select the quorum witness', pick ' configure a disk witness' I get the error
No suitable disks exist in Available storage.
    What am I missing?
    Any help/advice/suggestions grateful appreciated :)

    ok, figured it out:-
On Cluster 1 selected the Disk and put it in maintenance in Storage/Pools.
On Server 2 - selected Disk 1 and formatted it as NTFS and called it Quorum.
Then took the Disk 1 offline in Disk Management.
In Cluster 1 brought the Disk back on-line.
Ran the Quorum wizard and it works :)

  • 2012 R2 Cluster - Issues creating cluster

New Dell VRTX server with 2 server blades. Installed Server 2012 R2 on both blades and all working ok.
Ran the 'Validate Configuration' wizard and all ok apart from Storage Spaces, which we won't need as we have hardware RAID.
Then ran create cluster wizard and works ok until it goes to create and then fails:-
Adding special permissions to the computer object failed.
Trying to add 'Full-Access' permissions for security principal
    S-1-5-21-1054053922-559824688-2072063007-68696 to computer object
    CN=UKWOR-CLUSTER01,OU=Cluster,OU=SERVER,OU=HAR,OU=UK,OU=AVL,DC=xxxx,DC=xxxx,DC=lan
failed. Verify that the user running create cluster has permissions to update
the computer object in Active Directory Domain Services. The parameter is
    incorrect.
"CreateClusterNameCOIfNotExists (6888):   Configuring Computer Object UKWOR-CLUSTER01 to act as the CNO on DC   \\ xxx.lan"
"CreateClusterNameCOIfNotExists (6916):   Configuring Cluster CNO resource."
"CreateClusterNameCOIfNotExists (6942):   Cannot provide user special permissions to the object.
    Error <87> (Step ErrorPutSD)."
     "PhaseManager::EndPhase (235): Phase   109
"CreateNetworkName (4618): Failed to   create Computer Object for NetName Cluster Name on DC   \\ xxx.lan. Error 87."
I've tried this also by pre-creating the computer object (in the right OU and following guides online for setting the permissions, disabling it etc. I do not have Domain Admin rights as we are a large multi-national company. But I can create computer accounts
in my OU and I have given the administrator account that's logged into the servers the same rights on the relevant OU.
Any suggestions or ideas as to what I can do to progress with this as I've run out of ideas :(

    Thanks for the info PMThomas,
@Lerun: For us it was permissions as well in the end.  A quick fix I found to get arround it until you find the offending AD permissions is to create the new Cluster Computer Object in AD.  Disable the account.  Then go into security for the
Computer Object and disable inheritance, make sure you choose remove when promted.  For us this must have removed the offending AD permissions as we could then create the cluster.
I've not managed to work out which permission it was yet.  I guess I could test by removing each of the inheritted permissions one by one until the cluster wizard is successfull.
Heres a link to my post on our troubleshooting process if you fancy a LONG read!!
