Dbus hanging at startup, nss_ldap and pam_ldap to blame?

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=104114
This post is about the same problem I'm having, but I don't really like the solution. I'm running an arch box that is authenticating users through and Windows domain using ldap and kerberos, I know I can remove pam_ldap without any issue since the pam part of the setup is only using kerberos, but I don't think I can remove nss_ldap without breaking authentication. Does anyone else have a work around? I'm going to try removing the one once I get back into the box with a arch boot disk, and I'll update if that goes well.

  • Hanging on startup- Firefox and Chrome won't launch.

My MacBook Pro is hanging on the startup screen with the Apple.
I am wondering what else I can try to resolve this.
*It finally booted in Safe Mode- but the screen froze with only a Finder window open.
*Restarted it normally and it finally booted.
*To get it to restart the next day- I had to boot in Safe Mode- it froze again- and then it booted normally.
Other troubles: Safari is the only browser that will launch. Firefox and Chrome won't open, although the Apps are running, no window ever opens.
    Here's what I've tried:
    *reset PRAM
*ran Disk Utility - repaired permissions, verified the disk- everything checked out ok- button to repair disc wasn't an option.
I've noticed the boot time had been taking longer over the past couple of weeks... shutdown has been taking longer, too.
Apple replaced the Logic Board on this machine in July.  Could my current problem be related?
    Thanks.

The G5 is a PPC Mac. Chrome and Fx require an Intel (architecture) processor.

  • Labview 8.0.1 hangs on startup and shutdown

I have been using Labview 8.0.1 and Teststand 3.5 on my laptop for a few weeks (eval versions)
during the time I don't have access to my PXI platform.
Today when I tried to shutdown my laptop, Labview would not shut down and could
not be terminated. After 10min or so it finally shut down. After reboot of the system, labview
hangs on startup during "finishing intialization", and must be terminated. I cannot launch it at all.
Please tell me there is a way to fix it without reinstall.

    Woah there!  Let’s
take a step back before we take drastic measures…..
First of all, does your Laptop meet all of the minimum requirements
of the install of LabVIEW?  Do you have
sufficient RAM, do you have a supported OS, and do you have a capable video driver?  All of these things make a difference!  Additionally, there is a way to set the NI
services (or any service for that matter) to run when needed as opposed to
automatically running on startup. To do this, open the Windows Control Panel,
and click on “Administrative Tools” and open “Services”.  From here you can start and stop services, as
well as configure them to run in “manual” mode which will start them only as
    needed.
There should never be a problem with uninstalling NI
Software due to NI services running.  The
proper way to uninstall LabVIEW is to first shut down all NI programs you have
    open.  Then, go to control
panel->add/remove programs->national instruments software and choose “change”.  From here you can uninstall LabVIEW by
clicking on it and selecting “remove”.
Installing 8.0.1 should have had no effect on the NI services or LabVIEW.  Did you reboot and mass compile the LV directory after the
8.0.1 install?  It’s also important to note
that all of the LabVIEW 8.0 installers are the same.  The version of LabVIEW that is installed
depends on which version is “unlocked” based on the serial number you enter
    when activating LabVIEW.
It is entirely possible that for some reason one of the NI
services is hanging, or behaving poorly.
I think you were on the right track with starting debugging from that
point.  We could also try to determine
which exact service is causing problems, then determine which software that
service installed with and troubleshoot from there.
I assure you that many people are running with all sorts of
NI software combinations on their machines without these problems.  If there is some problem with an NI service
on your machine, installing a new version of LabVIEW might not make a
difference anyway.  I do apologize that
this has been causing you problems, and I thank you for the debugging completed
so far.  I hope this information proves useful -- please let us know how things
    go!

  • Firefox stopped working and hangs upon startup

First, a problem with iTunes - could not access the iTunes store. Uninstalled iTunes and re-installed, then Firefox hung up, had to close with Task Manager. After that Firefox hangs on startup. Have uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, still hangs on startup. Using Windows 7 OS.

Firefox will not load to start in safe mode - it is just a blank white screen with no radio buttons or icons on it and the circling icon for loading.
I deleted my old profile and uninstalled Firfox and tried downloading again, but the same problem exists. I am currently using IE as my browser, but prefered Firefox (when it worked). It seems the new version is the problem.

  • WebLogic 10.3.2.0 hanging at startup after "The server log file is opened."

    Hi,
A WebLogic 10.3.2.0 server is hanging at startup. There are no error messages. The last command in the startup window is:
"The server log file <log file dest> is opened. All server side log events will be written to this file."
I think the next line should be:
"Security initializing using security realm realm."
Any ideas on what could be the issue? For instance what resources should be accessed at that point of time? There is sufficient space left on the (virtual machine) disk. The VM configured with 8GB memory. Could it be performance related still?

  • Firefox 31 hangs on startup with no error messages

Simply put, Firefox hangs right on startup. I see it loading the two generic tabs and then the wheel spins and then it says 'Not Responding' on the top of the window. I have to force close it each and every time, and I've also tried the following solutions in no particular order to alleviate the issue:
    1) Ran SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes last night for any possible infections. Reported back with nothing.
    2) Booted my laptop up in Safe Mode (with networking) and still couldn't get it to operate.
    3) Performed several clean uninstalls and re-installations which also included clearing out the profiles altogether and then trying to open it again, nothing.
    4) Booted up Firefox by holding down the shift key and resetted it to its default settings and then tried firing it up again. Nothing.
    5) Attempted booting up FF in Safe Mode with the shift key, nothing.
    6) Created a new profile and tried booting FF, nothing.
    7) Read this article http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs#Hyper-Threading about Hyper-Threading and followed the instructions which got it to operate, but I can't access the toolbar or the option menus. When I click on options Firefox closes with no error messages. I have a feeling this isn't the issue at hand but I figure I'd try it and at least I can get it to fully load and not hang.
    8) Deleted all Firefox extensions and Plug-ins, nothing.
    9) Enabled Firefox through firewall and antivirus settings, nothing.
    10) Updated my BIOS firmware as suggested in #7, nothing.
I've done almost 10 different things and I still can't figure out why Firefox keeps hanging on startup. I've looked into Youtube videos for tutorials and others posted about the Java crashing that was happening in an earlier version of FF. Since its not crashing, I'm unable to look into the crash logs and pinpoint a crash number or anything because it just freezes and when I click to close it I get a message saying: 'Close program' or 'Wait for it to respond.'
I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion g6-1c44wm Notebook PC
Microprocessor 2.10 GHz Intel Pentium Processor B950
    Microprocessor Cache 2MB L3 Cache
    Memory 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)
Memory Max Maximum supported = 8GB
    Video Graphics Intel HD Graphics
    Video Memory Up to 1696MB
    Hard Drive 500GB 5400RPM)
I'm trying to be specific as possible! Please help! I'm at the end of my rope here!

Try to completely uninstall firefox, that means to '''delete''' the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory#Windows Installation directory] located for your 64bit in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ , also, '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox and '''if exist''', '''delete''' the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.
then download and install again a new full installer from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
disable firewall and antivirus and antispyware for a little bit, and run firefox. any luck ?
    thank you

  • 10.7.4 Hanging at Startup

I don't often find the need for these forums, but I've got a tough one this time. Here's my issue:
I was recently using my late 2008 MBP (6 Gig RAM, 500 Gig HD) without issue as I have done for the last several years. The other night, I was running my DJ software (Traktor) which worked fine all night. I ended the night and shut the lid on my MBP, the next day, Traktor was still shutting down (as it does on occasion). I gave it a few minutes, but it seemed to have crashed so I force quit the program. Things seemed to be running slow so I restarted. When I did, my system hung on startup at the gray Apple screen with the spinning wheel. After many days and many, many troubleshooting routines, I'm STILL unable to make this go away permanently. Here's what I've tried:
(I've always been able to boot in Safe Boot mode, so that's how I've been doing maintenence)
Initially, I thought this was probably related to my DJ software so I uninstalled it (including manually uninstalling all extensions and preferences).
That didn't work so I started cleaning out my system (I haven't done a fresh install of OSX since like 2005, so it was probably time anyways). Still, no luck.
I reinstalled 10.7.4. Success, but only for the initial startup. A subsequent reboot and I'm back at the stalled startup.
Try removing more stuff from the system to no avail.
Wipe hard drive completely, reinstall OS X. WORKS!
So, I start migrating things back over from my backup (I used CCC instead of TM because I wasn't sure of the integrity of my TM backup). Things seem to be going OK.
Reinstall Messages beta and restart. NOOOOOO. Back hanging at same place.
I figure it has something to do with Messages, so I Uninstall the Messages beta. Still hanging at startup.
    Getting really frustrated now.
Time to try a blast from the past: Applejack. Yes, I know, it's not officially supported under 10.7, but low and behold, cleaning caches gets me back in business--but only for one reboot. Then I'm back at a stalled startup until I clean the caches again (and it's the system cache, not the user cache).
I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM and then immediately cleaning the system caches. That again gives me one good restart then back to the hanging startup. And, that's where I'm at now.
I'm absolutely stuck. I literally have not experienced this kind of issue in at least five years, so I could really use a hand on this one. The last log entry that I'm getting on the stalled startup is this:
    6/28/12 11:25:39.364 PM ntpd: proto: precision = 1.000 usec
Then it just hangs forever. The spinning progress wheel just freezes. I left it sitting overnight at that screen, so I'm 100% sure that it's not going anywhere.
I have a couple of theories on what the issues could be, but at this point, I'm totally open to suggestions. From what I can tell (from watching the logs over the course of several (seems like) hundred startups), it seems like this is about the point in the startup where iCloud is trying to check my user credentials. That said, I could be totally off base with that. Also, although the preceeding log entry seems to come after this on occasion, I'm NOT seeing this entry on any of the startups that hang:
6/28/12 11:25:38.000 PM kernel: NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered.
Seems to me that this could be an issue too since that's obviously associated with the graphics hardware.
So, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Something you haven't mentioned is whether you have tried booting
from your clone and having the same issues.  Did you try that?
If it boots and works fine from the clone, then there could be
a corrupted file trying to be accessed at boot (possible bad sector)
on the internal drive or it could be that the drive is starting to
    give out.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008) RAID card hangs at startup

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro 2.8Ghz Quad Core (early 2008) with 10GB RAM and 512MB VRAM.
I have noticed that the Mac Pro RAID card hangs at startup for RAID volumes.
It seems to start okay with a single boot drive (have used both WD Raptor 150GB 10K and Seagate 'factory' 320GB 7200rpm as boot drives...)
But the RAID 0 array using two factory 1TB WD 7200rpm is what seems to hang at startup.  I have run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility and RAID Utility and found no major errors...
Any suggestions?  Have already replaced the RAID Card battery with OEM part.
    Thanks!

Say good-bye to the Apple Pro RAID card. It started its life as a $999 card to support SAS/SCSI and/or RAID5.
Then the problems with 2.5TB drives, battery, and does it really do something and add to your system.
I would use SoftRAID and create a 3-drive mirror of 2TB drives instead.
And an SSD for the system.
Seems like those are some very old drives.
I have a lot of the 150GB 10K VR drives, and some 300GB along with older 74GB and a couple of the Raptor series. Loud and while solid I would use for spare boot drives, clone only.
Backup your data, pull the RAID card, and restore to the drives. And clone the system onto a 250GB $109 SSD. $139 buys a 400MB/sec writes and 800MB/sec reads Samsung PCIe-SSD XP941. None of my SCSI 15K drives would come close.

  • Database Hangs on Startup

    Hi
We are using Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 .
We Restored the database on Test server from Production by using RMAN .
The problem is when we startup the database it hangs after Mount phase.
In alert log file We saw the following eror
    ERROR, tran=19.10.20602, session#=1, ose=0:
    ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel
We removed all the DBLINKS as we thought that could be the problem but the problem was same.

  • Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
    The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Indesign CS5.5 hangs on startup

    Hi,
My Indesign CS5.5 (I'm running Macosx 10.6.7) hangs on startup and gets this crash log: http://pastebin.com/xDXmdrt4
I've tried removing the recovery folder, the settings prefs and the FontExplorer plugin... nothing helps.
    Anyone?
    /Erlandsen

Mikkel, if the problem goes away with a new account, it is almost certainly a problem with your ~/Library folder, and reinstalling InDesign does not touch that, so it is no surprise the reinstall did not help.
If you truly removed all the folders I specified, then I'm quite surprised it didn't fix it. Sometimes it is a permissions problem -- you
might check the permissions on those folders with Get Info in the Finder, and maaaaaaaybe try running Disk Utility's Repair Permissions (usually a waste of time).
If not, well, try moving *everything* out of  your Library/ folder, and then putting it back bit-by-bit (well, half-by-half). This may be a somewhat unpleasant and potentially destructive process.

  • Startup Classes and JMS - Suggestions Please!

I'm in serious need of having several resources initialized before beans
    start handling requests.
I tried implementing a Weblogic Startup Class, and it works fine - as long
    as it's the first thing
to run! -- the problem is, when my Message Driven Beans deploy, if there are
    messages waiting
for them in their durable subscriptions, they immediately start
    processing... then about 30 seconds
later Weblogic (6.0sp1) gets around to starting my startup class. If I put
    code in each MDB that
kicks off the initialization when they are invoked I still run into
    problems, because my initialization
takes a LONG time (more than 2 minutes) - so I end up with lots of
    transaction rollbacks... which
are very annoying and clutter up the log files, and scare customers of the
    product.
Is there anyway to make a startup class/servlet/something that runs and
    completes before any
    other processing occurs?
    Thanks,
    James

Yes, Startup servlet has the same problem - it doesn't 'startup' until after
jms messages are already being delivered. :( aside from this, there are
class loader issues -servlet space and ejb space are not the same...
    Thanks though,

I've been involved with many projects that use WLServer, and in
almost every one of them, there has been a need for a startup class
that fires before the server starts handling requests.... strange that
I'd be the only one to need this, when the need has recurred so often.

    James,
If you have common initialization tasks to be shared by multiple MDBs,
    I
would create an abstract class (a.k.a BeanAdapter class) where you canhave
all your initialization logics and have your MDB extend from it.
I am not convinced that the Startup class needs to run first. In fact,
    I
have the same view that Startup class should run last. My only wishlist
    for
startup class was that I should be able to specify order, which isaddressed
    in 6.1.
I am also getting the feeling from different posts that MDB deploymentwould
have a re-try logic in 6.1, which I am beginning to look into. Check
    (or
    post) in JMS news group.

Thanks for the help... I like the pattern you pointed me to better
    than
anything else... ... but in all cases (your method, Gene's, and whatI'm
currently doing) I still have to put some code in every MDB that
    I deploy... : (
Put in a good word for me there at BEA and convince the appropriate
developer that startup classes should run first!

    James,
There are several ways to solve your problem. I normally use
setMessageDrivenContext to do all my initialization. There are two
    types
    of
initialization that I have performed here, first, reading theconfiguration
file and then load some utility classes in specific order. The
    problem
    with
the second was that you will have to use synchronized block
    w/HotSpot
    2.0
    to
keep the order, which is ok. I don't use static block to do the
initialization, instead use an init() metod. Hopefully you got the
    idea.
Recently, Gene Chuang created a pattern which esentially does the
    same
    and
    I
liked the pattern because it was a nicer way of doing what I
    needed to
    do.
    I
have changed all my examples to customer to use the new pattern.
    You
    can
    find it in
    http://theserverside.com/patterns/thread.jsp?thread_id=7270.
    The
only think I do not use of this pattern is
    initializeEveryContextSwap()
method. I am not convinced yet that I would need it (of course
    that
    might
    change over the time).
Hope this helps, and thanks Gene.

    Ok... here's some more detail:
The application is largely JMS based, and most of my Session
    EJBs
    are
invoked only my Message Driven Beans.
I have a large set of properties that need to be read from a
    config
    file,
and stored somewhere "globally". I also have a number of
    utilities
    that
need to get "warmed up" before I start doing any real processing(before
I start receiving messages from the JMS Topics). These
    utilities
    take
    a
long time to warm up (a long time being about 45-60 seconds) -
    because
they are loading hundereds of classes, and creating variousconnections
    to external resources.
Currently I'm creating a Singleton object that reads the
    configuration
    file
name from an environment property, and it then parses the file,
    and
    starts
configuring all of these utilities. Since the "Startup Class"
    didn't
    work
(weblogic invokes it after I'm already receiving messages), I
    put
    code
    at
the beginning of all of my MDB's onMessage() methods that calls
    the
singleton's "getInstance()" method - which synchronizes on alock
    object,
and does all of it's work.
I don't like this solution because:
1- I have to put code in EVERY message-driven bean that I
    create -
    if
    I
    forget one, everything is broken.
2- I have to increase the transaction time out of the entire
    server
    to
be over 60 seconds since the beans hang that long while theconfiguration
    is
    happening.
It seems very obvious that a "Startup Class" should be invoked
    after
    the
server has come completely up, but before it starts listening
    for
requests -- isn't the whole point of a "startup class" to getthings
    ready
that need to be done as soon as the server comes up? but alas,
    the
    person
who designed this at BEA apparently didn't agree with me on this
    point!
Any suggestion on better solutions would be greatly appreciated.

You can do it this way, but I would not recommend it, unless
    that's
    the
    only
way to attack the problem at hand. But that's just me.
I have seen this problem with multiple clients and in most
    cases
    there
    is
    a
better way to handle it. If James give us a little more
    information
    on
    what
type of configuration is he talking about and some background
    of
    his
application, we as a group can think and may be able to come
    up
    with
    some
    idea.

you could wrap the starting of weblogic in your own class
    and do
    initialization
there. You have to be careful because of the way weblogic
    classloaders
    work, but
you may be able to do what you want. Weblogic is just a java
    class,
    so
    you
    can
start your class, then once your done initializing, just
    call
    weblogic.Server.main

  • 10.5 Server hangs on startup

    Hi there,
After some maintenace I had to restart my MDD Sever but it hanged on startup. Booted again in safe mode (over 45 mins) still no luck. I can get it to boot from a sharepoint running 10.5 client. What's the best thing I can do from there? Sorry, I can't think straight anymore.

Just installed 10.5.6. No problems, following the usual apple guide to good
    housekeeping:
    1) close all programs
    2) REPAIR disk permissions (irrespective of whether you ran it the day before).
    3) Download and install software
3a) On MBP, or Macbooks, ensure your AC adaptor is connected (irrespective of whether battery is 100% or not).
    4) Enter password (if asked) and install.
My Mac Pro took about 5 minutes downloading the 190mB (probably Apple is busy right now) and about 1 1/2 minutes to install.
