DC/DC 12 Volt adaptor

I am thinking of replacing one of my powerbooks with a Macbook for us on my sailboat. So I need a DC/DC converter and one does not seem to be available for the Macbook. I do know that I can possibly use a DC to AC converter but aside from not wanting another instrument in a confined space I am also learly of the AC out, which may be a square wave or modified square wave and might damage the equipment. Any suggestions?

I don't believe there is a direct one. The standard adapter has a 16.5 V output when loaded.
I've heard claims that the (lighter style) plug in the official Apple MagSafe airline adapter may work with nominal 12 V power supplies as long as the source voltage is a typical 14.4 V from the alternator or a freshly charged car battery. The EmPower ports used by airlines are supposed to have a 15 V output. However - this won't charge the battery even if it does work. It only powers the computer as long as there's a reasonable battery charge.

  • Is there a 12 volt adaptor available for the MacBook

Has anyone looked into this? I'm unable to find anything on the Apple web site and no one I've spoken with seems to know...
Alternatively, if there isn't a 12 volt adaptor available, would I need to use a pure sine wave or modified sine wave inverter when I'm not near a power outlet to recharge the battery?

  • Dead 3 pin (uk) power adaptor

can anybody tell me how  i get hold of a new 5 volt adaptor as mine is bereft of life

My power adaptor (Model D12-50-A for WRT54G v.5) is about 3 years old and, in the last couple of days, is getting very warm, almost hot, to the touch and gving off lots of heat.  Is this normal and does it mean it's time to buy another one? Thanks for and advice to an old codger.

  • How do I charge my US MacBook Air in Israel?

I am traveling to Israel this week and was wondering whether I just need a 220 Volt adaptor only for the wall charger (like the one found in the Apple Travel Kit) or an actual step down transformer into which I plug my US adaptor?

This would give you 2 plugs for one outlet.

Also, I have the original iPad and the adapter fits my iPhones as well so I only need one charger for all.  I'm not sure if this is still true with the latest generation iPad but you could check.
You might want to get an ungrounded adapter as well in the event you need it.

  • Nomad 3 (Is battery my proble

My player stopped working... after three years ... I assume it is the battery but need to verify this before buying one... when I use the wall adaptor it does not work either, or the 2 volt adaptor ... Is this normal if the battery is dead?

If the adapter doesn't work either chances are there's something wrong with the player. Can you verify the adapter is producing a voltage from the tip?

  • I am traveling to Italy. Do I need an adaptor to use the 220 volt power?

I am traveling to Italy. Do I need an adaptor to use the 220 volt power?

All you need is a plug adapter to have your power block fit Italy's outlets. You can get these at any major store, look in the luggage area.
You do not need a voltage converter, the iPad's power block can handle world wide power.

  • When I cgarge my iPOD, can I do it overseas in a 220 volt plug as long as I have an adapter, or do I need to getb a transformer to convert the current to 120 Volts, as in USA?

When I plug in my iPhone 3GS using the Apple plug to charge it, and I am overseas in country with current of 220 volts, do I have to use a transformer to step down the current to 120volts, or can I just use an adapter to allow the plug to fit, and charge it with 220 volt current??

The adaptor voltage range is 90 - 240 so all you will need is an adaptor.

  • I am traveling from the US to France and have a Macbook Pro. Can I just use a plug adaptor or do I need a power converter to plug in?

I am traveling from the US to France and have a Macbook Pro. Can I just use a plug adaptor or do I need a power converter to plug in?

Just an adapter to change the US plug style to the one in the country you are going to. The AC charger will do the rest. It is rated for 120-240 volts and will adjust on  its own.

  • I purchased IPad air in USA. DO I need an adaptor to charge it in UK as a regular Uk USB PLUG does not seem to work

I have just tried to charge my IPad which I purchased in USA. I plugged the USB into a UK USB mains plug but it does not seem to start my IPad charging. Do I need an adaptor as I assume the IPad is 110 volt and not 240?

The power adapter is rated 110-240 Volts, 50-60 Hz so that part is OK. What you may need is a physical wall plug adapter for the UK.

  • Clicking noise from Ac adaptor while charging using 600W inverter

I am trying to charge my laptop from a 12 volt battery through a 600w inverter.
However the latop won't charge and the charger just makes a clicking noise.
Does any one know why this is?
    And can anyone help me?

I have no idea why the AC adaptor makes such clicking noise but this does not sound good.
You should use an compatible car ac adaptor for the notebook since wrong car adapter could damage the notebook.
Would recommend contacting an Toshiba service point in your country to get a right part.
You could also check some independent online resellers to get such part.

  • Does anybody know if it is ok to use a standard travel adaptor with macbook magsafe 85w power supply?

I am moving to New Zealand and want to take my macbook pro with me.
    I have a Magsafe 85w power supply.
I am aware of the apple travel kit.
Do i need to purchase this, or is a standard travel adaptor safe?
Do i need a lower watt magsafe power supply?
Should i get a grounded 3 prong adaptor rather than the ungrounded 2 prong adaptor that comes with the apple travel kit? Particularly with long term use.
    Thank you all!

The item that is crucial is the connector to the AC outlet.  The power adapter will work from 100 to 240 volts.
    Ciao.
A grounded plug is always preferable.

  • USB Adaptor for older char

    Hi,
I have a new ZEN player. The complete AC adpator is $29.99 plus shipping. All it is, is a 5 volt charger like the one I have for my nomad 2, nomad Zen Xtra and nomad Zen touch plus an USB adaptor. Well, I have lots of the old 5 v 2.4 amp wall chargers, just looking to purchase the little?2 inch adaptor?for cheaper than $30. Does creative sell it separate? Can you give a guy a break that continues to purchase a new mp3 player from creative every couple of years? What would be cool would be to be able to buy it for about $5, so I could get 2 of them, one for home, one for work.

Creative is not known for selling parts that are a component of a product. If you have multiple chargers and are familiar with wiring, you could probably make up your own adapter using an inline jack to connect to the barrel plug from the charger, using a USB mini-B cable.

  • Ac adaptor power supply needed

    I need heeeelp
    I have 5.1 PCWorks LX520 speaker , & it's ac adaptor doesn't work
& I searched for alternatives for it put I didn't find any ,
    Its details :
    2 V , 200 Am ,,, 230 V
    it's the same as inspire models [2.1 & 4.1 ]
I live in egypt , how can I get it ?

i also had the same problem?and then after a bit of research i found that AC is not neccessary ! even if you provide it with dc voltage or some other transformer of 2 volt then also it will work.
i have tested mine with my car battery aswell as the charger of remote control car (toy).
remember positive and negative does not matter bcz the bridge rectifier installed in your speakers can easily pass dc current?of any direction.

  • Power Adapter Actual Output in Volts

Ok, here's the story. I recently bought power invertor for my 12V car cigar lighter socket that allows me to plug in devices like mobile phones and my Powerbook using the standard 3 pin plug and Mac power adaptor. Great when you're a passenger on road trips to watch DVDs or just to recharge whilst on the move. Anyway, when I plugged in the Mac the charge light didnt show so I went back to Maplins to query the problem. The were very helpful and established the invertor was ok, the rating on inputs and outputs were well within its capabilities so we ended up taking a volt meter to the power adaptor. The result showed there was only 0.4 Volts coming out of the adapator when plugged into the mains and less when on the invertor. I'm confused, the adaptor is seemingly charging my Powerbook ok off the mains. So does anyone know what the actual output from the Mac adaptor shoud be. Im guessing my adapter needs replaced but I have to say it seems to charge the battery off the mains pretty quickly.

Problem solved by buying a more powerful invertor. Whilst initial invertor spec suggested it would power the Mac there may be an issue with the fluctuations in output that is solved by going large on the invertor. The capacity of the new unit is 300W, way too much, but it does seem to mean that low wattage is supplied consistantly well to keep my PB 12 happy. Now heading to Chamonix by car with Mac on power lead PW

I Ende charge  my iPad 3 and i Havre 220 vol over here, trying put on computer but receive the words not charging, Can use the adapter with 220 volt or only 110 volt?

The adaptor that comes with the iPad will work with 220 v. It will auto-switch. All you will need is a wall outlet plug adaptor.
You cannot charge the iPad from your computer's USB port.
