Dc5850 cpu fan speeds to top speed sys then shutdown

I have a Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq dc5850 Micro tower PC, now running windows 7 pro 64-bit. That was new in late 2008. Originally it came with vista 32-bit downgrade able to XP pro 32 bit, running on 2G RAM, and 160G C drive with a 2.30 gigahertz AMD Phenom 8600B Triple-Core processor. It also has ATI 3100 integrated graphics as well as integrated NIC at 1G and integrated High def audio. In the first few months I had the system, I upgraded memory by 4G and total Disc space by 500G by adding a D drive; then upgraded to windows 7 pro 64-bit.
Overall, I have had a good experience with the PC but it has had problems while in its 3-year warranty. I did need to replace the C drive and later it original RAM devices. Yes HP did these replacements and swaps, under warranty; that meant I had 6G memory for a long time before the HP 2Gig failed out of warranty, leaving me with 4Gig now. Yes I have always had the Unit on an UPS; I even replaced the old UPS with a more powerful unit in late 2009 or early 2010 when the old UPS showed signs of failure. Now instead of serial based UPS connection it is USB.
Over the last few months I have been getting blue-screen errors of all sorts. Ranging from video related errors, Memory faults, Disc read/write failures and processor flag errors too. After numerous repair disc runs or re-install of windows, the disc read write errors wore corrected by the HP drive sanitation utility disc repair/wipe after failing the extended test. The non video ram was tested by a bootable CD of memtest86 v4 running extended test as well as MS memory Diagnostic. Both run multiple times, both passed multiple times. I was able to find a CD based video diagnostic for ATI and the Video passed repeated stress test as well. Over Labor Day I conducted these test and re-installed windows 64-bit; on the following Monday windows informed me I needed to activate windows, so I verified the correct key and called to do so, successfully.
With that background given here is the question. Recently over the last two or three months, for no apparent reason, mainly on boot the fan races to top speed and the system shuts down to protect itself. I researched this a little and found one cause to be inadequate airflow over the CPU to keep it cool; the recommendation made sense to vacuum with a computer vacuum and be sure airflow is not somehow obstructed. I am now thinking all these problems are related to the CPU temp sensor. Is it on the CPU fan or the motherboard, and can raising the fan speed in BIOS help prevent the problem, particularly if it on the motherboard.

My pentium 4 3.0c stock Intel fan is 4.44 watts. Isn't the mobo designed for this?
Also, can the sys fan header have the speed sensor activated by a bios fix or is it a hardware issue where it just does not exist? If hardware, seems strange since Corecell shows sys fan.

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

Edge 130 overheats and shuts down, but CPU fan runs at low speed

Hi! I am having a problem with my Edge E130, running un Windows 8.1 64-bit. When running under high load the laptop will at times overheat so much that the system does a hard shutdown - it simply powers off. I installed Speedfan - it shows the CPU at above 90 degrees celsius. The weird thing is that the CPU fan is not running at full speed. I do not know why. Is there a way to fix this? The fan should at least run at full speed. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the reply! I can't seem to find a black and white sticker. There is a sticker which is black with light grey text. Is it one of these two numbers? label P/N 0B07208CT1 label P/N 0B95210 I am not using any fan control software. Also, my BIOS version is the latest available from Lenovos support site. (when I update the BIOS last time, the fan was running at very high RPMs for a while during the install. So it seems it would be possible for it to run faster)

Cpu fan stuck at max speed

Out of nowhere, my computer (early 2006 20" Intel iMac) started making huge fan noises. The iStat pro widget shows that the CPU fan is blowing at 3600 rpm (apparently the max), and the other two fans are normal. CPU usage is minimal, and CPU temperature is low (30-40 degrees C), so there's no good reason for the fan to go to the max.
I've tried (several times) to reset the SMC, but it doesn't help. A couple times over the past five days, it's gone back to normal, but then it soon goes back to max.
Anybody experienced anything like this? Any suggestions?

I have the same problem,
I know a lot about computers (for not a professional) and after doing anything i can without opening the case,(SMC reset, Vram reset, safeboot and starting on verbose,Apple hardware test)
In my specific problem the facts are
4SNS/1/40000000:'TmOP' from apple hardware test
Cpu Fan: 3604rpm (really high) this is the logic board fan
the other 2 fans are normal
Cpu tmp: 28 C (low)
GPU diode 127 C (ridiculously high - no tmp variation) from Istat pro
Memory controller 127 C (ridiculously high - no tmp variation)
all the other temperatures, as the cpu ,are a little bit lower than normal which is normal because of the high speed fan
that means logically that the system is reading a 127 Celsius tmp in these places
and the fan is responding right
So the tmp sensor is sending a false tmp
there are 3 sensors this one is on the logicboard and you cannot change it
i went to a certified apple service provider and we open the case together,
as i wanted to be there.
I hoped with some dust cleaning or something position related we could do something but no, after checking every possible solution,
needs a logiboard replacement that he (like me) did not recommended (very expensive)
Other than the fan noise there is(until now) no other symptom, in OSX or XpPro
so I'm not going to pay about 700 euro (for everything) for this machine
I'm positive (i checked it myself) that there is nothing hot inside, just the sensor circuit is stuck at these tmp
If the the fan dies sooner its much cheaper and i can even replace it myself

It is just 2 months after the warranty! and i know that this is a logicboard defect
the ironic thing is that before that happened i was thinking o upgrading the Cpu 2.0CD to a 2.33C2D (yes you can, if you really want) but now i 'm going to leave it like this and sometime buy a new thing (not an imac again!) a mac pro if i am richer or a decent PC
I really like macs and everything, but the compact feature when the time comes may have a compact problem!

Kernal_Task consumes 300% of CPU + Fan runs at high speed

I am currently using MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2012.
Since last few weeks this mac has been so slow and the fan began runing at very high speed wich makes noise so loudly.
I then went to a so called "Genius Bar" at the apple retailing store. They did "the neccessary test", they told me so. "There is no any significant problem with your mac, both softwear and hardwear", they replied to my question why my mac became so slow and noisy.
After the dianostic test, they reseted PVRAM, PRAM and SCM... They told me the problems were resolved.
I brought my mac back home.
Oh my Buddha, the problem was still here. By tomorrow morning, I went back again to the store. A "genius man" told me to backup all my data as he needed to reset my system to a new version Mavericks OS X 10.9.1. After reinstallation the new version, we did a test there. Unfortunatly, the result was negative.
They seemed curious with my mac's problems. They suggested me to change MLB, 2.5Ghz, Fan, Front Hard Drive Bracket W/IR/Sleep/HD Cable.
..... Two days after the same story re-appared. I went to the store again. This time they suggested me to change the Topcase, W/Keyboard, No Trackpad,13" MBP-CAN. I paid for that.
It's very anoying. They changed almost everything. I wasted a lot of money and times. The last day I went to the "Genius Bar", the manager told me that they can detect or identify the problem. "What we can do for you is to refund you!", he told me. I really don't like this phrase much as what I wanted was that my Mac should be repaired.
So, my question is that how do we can troubleshoot the Kernal_Task? It consume 300% of CPU. The fan sound loudly even before entering my password to operate the system. I mean just by clicking the power button you can already hear the loud sound. And now I continue working with "MacBook Pro. with Tractor Sound".

just got back an iBook from the Apple Store and now it won't turn on..the screen stays black but the fan (at least it sounds like a fan) keeps running quite fast and loud.....any help would be greatly appreciated

CPU fan running full speed after 15 minutes

My 3 month old iMac 24" has just started having fan problems.
Before I went away on a training course, it was working fine. Left it switched off at the outlet for 3 days, now the CPU fan runs full speed after the iMac has been switched on for 15 to 20 minutes.
CPU temp is 24C, CPU heatsink is 28C. Ambient is 17C. CPU fan is 3600rpm. Other fans are normal.
CPU usage is less that 10%. Only Safari is running.
I've tried resetting the SMC - left all plugs disconnected for 15 minutes, reconnected mains power for 15 minutes, reconnected USB, then switched on.
Still the same - OK for 15 minutes, then CPU fan runs full speed.
Anything else that I can try?

I tried again, following your instructions exactly. It seemed to work, running normally for about an hour.
I left all the USB devices unplugged, except for the keyboard and mouse.
I then shut the iMac down, but left the mains power turned on at the wall. When I switched it on again 2 hours later, all was OK for 15 minutes, then the CPU fan ran at full speed.
Shutting down for a few seconds fixes it for another 15 minutes.
I'm wondering if it's a software problem, although I haven't loaded any apps recently, apart from a few monitoring programs since this problem appeared.
Last night I left it running the extended hardware test for a couple of hours, and the fans were fine.
One thing that I noticed yesterday was that the "GPU" temperature readings in iStat were all missing (just "-" displayed) for a couple of seconds when I clicked on Dashboard. Is there a way to keep iStat open while I'm using the iMac?
I think I'll try booting XP and see what happens.

IMac CPU fan on full speed from start up

Hi,
For about 3 months now I've had a problem with my iMac where the CPU fan runs at full speed from start up, until I turn it off. It is extremley noisy and frustating.
I am pulling my hair out trying to fix it.
So far I have reset the SMC and PRAM and downloaded fan controllers. I've also opened it up and checked the sensors and cleaned out all of the dust, but this annoying problem still persists.
Is there anything else I could try that could fix this problem?

I have tried to run the AHT many times, but for some reason I can't get it to work. I even tried booting it from the insitallation disk which someone else suggested.
I'm not sure where to go from here

Dell Vostro 3560 CPU Fan Control Tips

I'm in the process of configuring my brand new Vostro 3560 and one of the things I noticed was that the CPU fan was blasting full speed all the time even when the machine was idle. After some researching I came up with the following solution using i8kmon and I'll post it here for others:
Disclaimer 1: In this configuration, you will be setting up thresholds on what fan speeds are used at a specific temperature. If you use this config, this assumes that your machine is a) reporting the correct temperature and b) the fan speed setting works for your specs. Always monitor your laptop and change the configuration if your laptop feels too hot.
Disclaimer 2: I've only had this laptop for a couple of days now, so no long-term stress testing has been performed in this configuration.

U550 annoying cpu fan on new computer! help!

i'm a little desprate about it, today i've bought a new notebook call Ideapad u550-2958 (T6600, 4 giga-ram, 500gb nvidia 210m).
I opened up my computer and started to work, but i've notice that my notebook cpu fan is acting very strange, even though i didn't do anything that count "heavy" the cpu fan worked in high speed for a short duration and then go silent again (but! only for 3 secnods) and then started again. the odd thing is that i'm just on the web and fill like my mom using a giagentic vacuum cleaner.
So my qusetion is :
this is how u500 cpu fan should work? or you think that it's a technical problem.
i read about similar problem with the a s10 this is the same case

i have the same problem with an U450p.
Measuring the temperature with CoreTemp i found out that the fan in my notebook turns on and off at 35°C (which is far too low). Because it is the same temperature for on and off, the fan is only running for a couple of seconds, turns off for a couple of seconds and turns an again and so on...
I did not find a solution yet and the telephone support line told me to send it in. I believe this can only be fixed by releasing a new BIOS, but I will send it to Lenovo anyway, as soon as I don't need it for a while (I am going to holiday in february).
The new BIOS should turn on the fan at 55°C or so, keep it on at low speed until reaching 45°C. Only for temperatures above 60°C the fan should run at full speed I think.

wondered if a different failure than than "CPU fan has failed ... system will shutdown in a few seconds". I have a DX-2000 P4 desktop running XP SP3 which I just changed motherboard and CPU fan on. All fans are spinning at close to same speed. (P/S,Chassis and CPU). Not extremely fast but cant see vanes. Computer has sat for several years. Wondered what the actual test is and how fan speed is regulated. I guess temperature sensors are built into the cpu, somehow there must be a varying voltage applied to fans to change their speed and/or a measuring device to see what their rpm is. This must be controlled by the BIOS as the whole pass/fail test is. My next step is to put back the old fan and see what happens. I have a new p/s to install should be here today. Actually used but cleaned and tested. Saving a cleaning chore. Not sure if my older supply might be causing the issue with low volts.

[Solved] Asus L1366 mobo, cpu fan speed control

Hi, everyone,
I finally have this new core i7 system, to replace my old AMD athlonx2. I have one question about the CPU fan speed control.
I remember that in my old system, the cpu fan speed control works out of box, no configuration is needed.
But when I install arch 64 on this new i7 system, the cpu fan is running at its maximum speed constantly while the CPU temperature is modestly low. I know there is a wiki teaching how to do it.
However, I am just curious why it doens't work out of box any more? Does CPU fan control work for you guys out of box normally? especially the new Core i7 cpu users?
Please let me know, really appreciated it.

First off, it would be useful to know what the sensors-detect script actually reports.
Okay. How fan control works on Linux: First, navigate to /sys/class/hwmon
Each of these folders, i.e. hwmon0, stands for a sensors monitor / fan controller on your mainboard that may control one or several fans. Inside hwmonN, there should be a subfolder called device, which contains several interfaces if your BIOS allows software-side fan control. You can read them with cat and write to them with echo.
Examples:
pwm1_enable shows if OS-level fan control is enabled (1) or disabled and in BIOS control (0). Changing fan speed won't work if this is disabled. (i.e. cat /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable reports 0 -> disabled; you could enable it with echo 1 > /sys/class/hwmon0/device/pwm1_enable).
pwm1 allows to change fan speed. The values range from 0 (fan off) to 255 (full speed, 12V).
fan1_input shows the current RPM if a fan is connected. You can only read from this interface. Its useful to check all of these in the each of the hwmon folders to find out if there is actually a fan connected to the fan controller (they often have more ports than mainboard manufacturers use).
There might be a fan1_div, this is somehow related to how the kernel reads the RPM, I don't know how it works.
temp1_input interfaces can appeare too, if some of the chips have temperature sensors located somewhere. I *think* lm_sensors places the core temperatures it reads from CPU (the coretemp-isa-000X thingies) in one of the hwmon-folders too.
There might be interfaces for different fans in the same hwmon folder, i.e. pwm2_enable, pwm2, fan2_input, etc., all interfaces with the same index belong to the same physical fan connector, and all in the same hwmonN are managed by the same IC on your mainboard.
Warning: These interfaces, if they work, control the fans directly without any kind of security measure. If you shut some essential fan down, it will stay off until you reboot your CPU shuts down.
(If you see something likein0_alarm, in0_input, in0_max, etc. it's a voltage monitoring chip.)
If one of those interfaces can do something, OS-level fan control does work, if none of those folders contain a working pwm interface, fan control seems to be unavailable.
Sometimes there is an option in the BIOS to enable it, and for some BIOSs software-side fan control only works if dynamic fan control is disabled in the BIOS and fan speed is set to a static value - or vice versa.
I don't know what you are using to control fan speed, there are many applications that use these interfaces, i.e. GNOME or KDE power managers, so I'm not sure what is happening:
IF: Windows 7 enables OS-level fan control and sets it the RPM to those you observed and you have nothing that provides fan control in Arch and so fan control stays at BIOS-level, which might also read out a different sensor / the same sensor differently or it might be more conservative in setting fan speeds altogether;
OR: You have something that provides fan control installed in Arch and it reads out a the wrong value supplied by lm_sensors and thus sets a higher fan speed.
Anyway, possible solutions I can think of:
Find out if you have some kind of fan control software and what it does. For example, I use the fancontrol daemon, I can't help you if you use something else.
The wiki mentions how to assign a fan speed to a certain temperature sensors. You might assign it to a different one. For example, there are no sensor chips on the mainboard of my EEE (no temp1 etc.) so I assigned the fan speed to the temperature reported by the BIOS via ACPI (those are in /sys/class/thermal, also no "device" subfolder on EEEs):
FCTEMPS=/sys/class/hwmon/hwmon0/pwm1=/sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp
You could also change the MINTEMP/MAXTEMP values to one higher than those you actually want to compensate for the effect of lm_sensors reporting temperatures that are too high.
It is currently not possible for a mortal user to change the coretemps lm_sensors reads, see this post, last paragraph.
There is a configuration file, /etc/sensors3.conf, you can change sensor names and adjust offsets here, but only for the monitoring chips and their sensors that are on the mainboard.

Z77A-G45- CPU fan speed problem

Hi all, new to this forum and MSI Motherboards.
i have a problem with my CPU fan speed when i plug any fan and water cooler fan into the CPU 4pin they all run at 2000+ rpm, but when i use the fan 1 or fan 2 --4 pin it runs at a slower speed of 1400rpm, am i missing something in bios, i have 2.5 version of bios, would be greatfull for any help....

Fan on top speed

My computers fan has been on top speed (6100-6200 rpm) since a week ago. I tried to set the configuraiton to normal using shift-control-alternative-power button before starting up the computer again and I have also installed a fan speed controller (smcFancontrol) but nothing seems to help.
I dont use any hard graphic programs just iTunes and firefox and time to time openOffice. The fan doesnt tend to care. The temperature is about 35 degrees celcius or 97 fahrenheit.
Is there anything else I can do?

There are a couple of things you can check:
Run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get anything in the form of an error code. If a thermal sensor has failed, the fan will run all out by default.
Open Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder). Select "All Processes" in the upper preference pane and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Look for a hung up process which is hogging the CPU. Often printer processes will hang up like this, but it could be almost anything. A hung up process will also cause the fans to run all out. If you find such a process, highlight it and quit it.

CPU Fan - constantly runs at high speed

Just like the title says, my CPU fan is constantly at a high speed. It's loud and I haven't been able to figure out how to set it back to normal. It's a Dell Optiplex GX620. I swapped the power supply, re-imaged the hard drive, and flashed the BIOS to the latest version from dell's website. I looked through all the BIOS settings and logs and didn't find anything. I've asked every IT I know, and gone through a million forums with no real explainations or ideas to this issue. So far the best advice I've got is to turn it off. My theory is if I find the driver that controls the CPU fan and update it, the system won't see the CPU as overheating and it will return to normal. I'm close to just replacing the motherboard but thought I'd post something first. Anybody have an answer?

www.VGA.com and post your problem in the forum that best fits your problem or start a post of your own. Be a lot more detailed then you are here about all the equipment it will be very important when trying to diagnose. Do not throw out your mother
board and stop replacing parts your waisting loot. when you go into the the AMD web site and post under the proper forum You are going to hopefully run into one of three people Gr33nGecko, SteveO_Crossfire or Black Zion these three people
are experts in there field and have forgotten more than most people know. If stevo responds to you he will have a website posted in blue near the bottom of his post or ask him to show you his system you might want to be sitting when you see the unit
for his house. I could run a good size town on the darn thing and wait to you see the cooling tower on top. Iv'e seen smaller units on power plants lol. Just joking but the darn cooling tower is still huge . I know Gr33 is in several forums as a
supermoderator and has over 17,000 post listed that I am aware of. Well good luck and dont give up.
I know of several reasons your unit maybe overheating but I think you would be better off with anyone of these three techs. and it would be good if you had a second computer/laptop near you. When I am working with them I use a lap top that way I can
do voltage checks or whatever and I am responding with questions and answers without delay and I am not blowing up my computer or myself to answer or check a problem that would normally require me to shut down my problem computer and still be able to
talk with the guys.
