DCNM performance

We recently upgraded our DCNM server to 6.3(1) and we've noticed that the server hosting the DCNM application is doing more IOPS than any server in our environment!
It seems to be doing 8,000 - 10,000 IOPS constantly.
In Windows you can see that postgres.exe process is doing an ton of reads from E:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\dcm\db\data\base.
Does anyone know why it's constantly doing so much IO?  Is this normal?
We simply use DCNM (aka Fabric Manager) to do some basic zoning on our MDS fabrics.
I've attached some screenshots to show what we are seeing.

Found this, it may help if you haven't already configured it.

  • DCNM Performance issues ( postgres ? )

Hello, we are evaluating DCNM-SAN to get an idea of our SAN Switches performances, ( mostly 9513).
    Environment :
Physical server ( not under VMW), with 2 x Intel Xeon 5110 processor @1.6 Ghz
    12 GB RAM
    Local disk.
    Windows Server 2008R2  64bit.
We are using a DCNM demo license and discovered 24 MDS ( 20 licensed by the demo lic, 2 already fully licensed and 2 not licensed).
In the same SAN ( 6 fabrics) we do have also 36 Nexus switches connected to the MDS for the FCoE connections to/from the servers; those Nexus are not licensed so we do not collect performances for them.
For all the licensed MDS ( 22) we are collecting performances.
We started with DCNM 6.1.2, and everything was running smooth, then 5 days ago we decided to upgrade to 6.2.1.
From the very first moment after the upgrade, we have noticed an increased load in the CPU, that normally was about 6 to 10 %;  now, after 5 days the CPU load is above 80% most of the times, and when opening a page ( i.e. dashboard, performance or inventory section) it takes about 2 minutes to have the page completed with 100% of cpu load, while before the upgrade it took about 5 secs.
I also noticed that when  cpu is 100%, it is due to 4-5 "postgres.exe *32" processes chocking it.
I took a peek at the troubleshooting section of the docs, and the only reason for a postgres slowlyness could be the DB > 3 GB, but our is only 185 MB !!
I really don't get it, tryied even a server reboot but with no luck....to my understanding, collecting performances for 24 MDS with this server HW should be ok, not  to mention that until we performed the upgrade, everything seemed to run smoothly..
Any help, please ? We are willing to evaluate the acquisition of such licenses, but we're start to having some doubt....
    Tnx in advance
    Andrea

    Hi,
you should analyze the db after you have loaded the tables.
Do you use sequences to generate PKs? Do you have a lot of indexex and/or triggers on the tables?
    If yes:
make sure your sequence caches (alter sequence s cache 10000)
Drop all unneeded indexes while loading and disable trigger if possible.
How big is your Redo Log Buffer? When loading a large amount of data it may be an option to enlarge this buffer.
Do you have more then one DBWR Process? Writing parallel can speed up things when a checkpoint is needed.
Is it possible using a direct load? Or do you already direct load?

  • Monitoring nexus 5K using DCNM (linux platform)

    Hi guys,
since some time i installed on a linux server. (the server is shared with Netapp onCommand / DFM).
nothing to say about installation and discovery of the nexus switches.
they i read the manual to understand how to collect performance data... and here start the problem ( in my opinion the documentation is not very clear and miss the basics).
    i did the following steps:
    1. created a flow on 1 nexus switch for 2 zones traffic direction both. (i tried to create for all zones all cards but i've got a out of memory error and im not able to understand if its a server problem of a nexus problem)
    2. created collections on DCMN-> admin.>collections for both nexus
    3. started performance manager
the result after some time (ciouple of hours) is:
    on DCNM->performance->end devices->all ports
i see all NaNB (usually means the snmp response is blank or -1)

what happens is when the server boots the HBA sees the array and boot lun, but when you start the ESX 5.1 install the server initiator logs out of the SAN and the boot lun disappears. If you use ESX 4.1 everything works fine. I opened a TAC case and they confirmed that the fnic driver in ESX 5.1 will not work with the 4700's directly connected to the FI.

  • Get the performance data on to DCNM Web client summary page

    Dear all,
Objective: To show my Nexus swicthes performance on DCNM summary web page.
I had install full evaluation package of DCNM 6.2 Server SAN, LAN. This installtion is for my PoC on 2x Nexus swiches.
I was able to login to the web browser and on the summary page, i dont see any performance on CPU, SAN Host Port, SAN Storage Port.
I did read up and created Flows on my Nexus swicthes. But still no performance shows in DCNM page.
At the DCNM web, Admin/Status, i tried to click Start button on Performance Collector but failed.
Hope someone help me to get the performance status shown on my DCNM page.
Note: I am very confuse on the Performance subject.

We have faced a similar issue , Oracle have recommended to install the following process to fix this issue ..
    Steps involved :
Necessary roles for FDM Web on Windows 2008
The first step is to launch the Windows 2008 Server Manager as Shown. Click the "Add Roles" link.
The first role necessary for the FDM Web Server to function is the Application Server Role
Selecting this role returns a message box alerting you that additional features are required for installation of the role. Click the Add Required Features Button.
The second required role is the Web Server (IIS) Role which installs the IIS components.
The next screen is an Introduction to the Application Server Role. Click Next to continue.
The Application Server Foundation is selected by default. The Web Server (IIS) Support Role Service is also required.
Choose to add the Required Role Services
The next screen is an Introduction to the Web Server (IIS) Role. Click Next.
All default selected options should be checked along with the "IIS 6 Management Compatibility" option which will install the IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility required for FDM.
Review all selected options and click "Install" to install the components.
Installation is Successful. Click Close to finish.

  • Cat 6500 with DCNM 6.2(1)

    Hi there,
for test purposes I installed Cisco Prime DCNM 6.2. It works great with out Nexus 5k and 7k, however I have trouble with our older Cat 6500 devices. While I know that support for these devices is limited I am surprised that the portchannels  could not be discovered performance wise and in regard to the topology map, even if they are connected to N7k's. Neither the normal portchannel ISLs between different 6500 nor the vPCs between 6500 and N7k appear in the topology, although the switches were successfully discovered and are considered "managable" via snmp and ssh.
Is there anything I need to do to make it work?
    Best regards
    Pille

    Rafael,
I had the same issue.  You need to go into ACS and create a custom Shell Profile (Policy Elements > Authorization and Permissions > Device Administration > Shell Profiles), flip to the "Custom Attributes" tab, and add the following:
    Attribute: cisco-av-pair
    Requirement: Mandatory
    Attribute Value: Static
    Value: shell:roles="network-admin"
...although if you want a non-admin or DCNM "User" role, you would use the following instead:
    Value: shell:roles="network-operator"
Save that.  Then make sure your Device Admin Authorization Policy (Access Policies > Access Services > Default Device Admin > Authorization) references that Shell Profile in the "Results" section.
I'm using DCNM version 6.2(5) and this works.

  • DCNM event notification

    Hi,
I have implemented dcnm-san recently in our environment.
dcnm server is running on a vm with windows 2008 r2 pointing to an oracle db on an aix lpar.
our environment consists of 6 core and around 50 blade center modules
initially ,I was recieving atleast 150 or more  warning and info events everyday for license and port alarm  etc
I changed the server properties to filter out any event less than critical but they still showed up for 2 or 3 days and all of a sudden from yesturday ,I dont see any events at all . is this normal ??
or my dcnm server not recieving the traps. all the performance metrics are still up to date.
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • DCNM-SAN supporting FI

Using DCNM-SAN with UCS (2.1.2a); I created on all FC devices (MDS and N5k) a user "dcnmuser" with netadmin rights. I also created a snmp v3 user "dcnmuser" with UCSM. Then I did a fabric discovery with DCNM-SAN; I see the fabric, MDS, N5k and FI, however, the FI have a red arrow, which means not manageable.
    Q. what could be wrong ? or is this really supported ?

    Understood, thanks Robert
We only want to monitor UCS-FI with DCNM-SAN.
    The release notes 6.1.2
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/6_x/dcnm/release/notes/dcnm_6_1_relnotes.html
    are quite misleading:
    Introduction
Cisco Data Center Network Manager combines the management of Ethernet and storage networks into a single dashboard to help network and storage administrators manage and troubleshoot health and performance across the following product families that run Cisco NX-OS software:
•Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors and Cisco MDS 9200 and 9100 Series Multilayer Switches
•Cisco Nexus 1000V Series Switches and Cisco Nexus 1010 Virtual Services Appliance
•Cisco Nexus 2000 Series Fabric Extenders
    •Cisco Nexus 3000, 4000, 5000, and 7000 Series Switches
    •Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches
•Cisco UCS 6100 and 6200 Series Fabric Interconnects
    •Cisco FireWall Service Module (FWSM)
Cisco DCNM-SAN Release 6.1(1b) and later releases do not support Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches and UCS devices running Cisco NX-OS Release 4.1(3) or an earlier release.
However, Table 9 Hardware Features Supported by Cisco DCNM Release 6.1
    doesn't show UCS FI !

  • DCNM Discovery Issues

    Hello Community,
Can someone please help determine why I'm unable to discover our NX7's and NX5's, using DCNM-LAN. From the screen shot when I click on 'Click here to discover the devices in DCNM', I'm taken to the web page showing the devices that have been discovered (see screen shot 2). However, the devices don't appear in the Cisco Prime DCNM-LAN.
And I imagine the reason I'm not able to see any devices in the topology view is because I'm not able to discover any devices?
    Please help.
    Cheers
    Carlton

    Hi Carlton,
After discovery you need to perform an "deep discovery" for the devices.
    You can find this here:
    admin>data sources>LAN
Mark the task and press the "edit LAN' pencil icon.
Then select the device and OK. After this the devices will show up in DCNM - LAN.
    Cheers
    Alex

  • UCS Blade Utilization / Performance Monitoring Tools?

An unnamed software system vendor from whom we have purchased product was not ready to support their product in a virtualized platform environment. But we are a Cisco UCS shop. So we added a chassis, put four blades in it, and let the vendor install and configure their product across the four blades. I am not satisfied with the performance of their application, and have doubts that it is actually using the resources of all four blades. And I have no idea how to see the utilization of CPU Mhz or memory or even the blade-to-blade communication that one would expect the software system's clustering to implement.
NetApp has a great tool in OnCommand System Manager for monitoring the storage system performance. vSphere does a nice job with vSphere Client for datacenter hosts and the guests defined therein. But these blades are used as individual Linux servers....I'm looking for a way to get a view of how the application is using these compute resources.
Is anyone aware of a useful performance dashboarding tool available for monitoring the performance of blades in a UCS chassis?

    A couple of answers:
ESXi hosts are monitored using a connection to vSphere, not directly to each ESXi host. By connecting to vSphere, UCS PM is able to track VMs as they vMotion from host to host. vSphere versions supported are 4.1, 5.0, 5.1.
    Microsoft Servers are monitored using the WinRM protocol. Supported versions include 2003, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2. Hyper-V is supported on 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2.
UCS PM is a performance and capacity monitoring product for people running UCS-based integrated infrastructures. That means it covers OS, virtualization, UCS compute, storage, and a focused set of network devices.
DCNM helps people implement, visualize, and manage a UCS Unified Fabric. It works with a really broad range of network devices.
You might well want both products. It depends on what you're trying to do!
In general UCS PM is licensed by the server, where all servers in a domain must be covered. There's one version just for the UCS fabric and one that covers all the integrated infrastructure components.
Perhaps a Cisco employee can respond on pricing.

  • DCNM Client disconnections

    Hello,
We have an issue involving DCNM 6, For some reason the Java Client gets disconnected every couple of minutes
While the Java Client keep disconnecting we have constant access to the web client,
Each disconnection requires re-opening the client in order to continue working.
The disconnections occure even while working so it doesn't look like idle timeout.
Did anyone encountered a similar issue ?
    Thank you,
    Valentine

    Hello,
As a matter of fact we did manage to solve the JAVA disconnections by performing a clean install of the DCNM, our customer has tried to migrate the server to a virtual environment and the service just stopped responding no matter what we did so we just had to... So as you can see we just got lucky :)
If you still have this problem I suggest a fresh install of the new version other than that a sniffer on both sides (client and server) to try and understand what happens prior the disconnection, in our case we did not manage to narrow it down enough...
    Best of luck!

  • DCNM support for Nexus

    1) As per release notes DCNM 4.2 we cannot perform software/configuration/power management for Cisco Nexus 2k and 5k from DCNM.
Is there some other solution with which we carry out above task
    2) Also can DCNM manage QOS and Multicasting on Nexus 7k/5k/2k or not

I note Nexus syslogs are still not supported in CS-MARS v6.1.x Revised: January 27, 2011
With CS-MARS product now end of sale June 2011,  should I hold out any hope of a fix before end of Software Maint in June 2012 ?

  • Re: CISCO DCNM

    Hi all,
Using Performance manager in Cisco DCNM for historical reporting, I know that it doesn't require any manual management for collecting  logs, since it automatically summarize the past data.
Actually DCNM webclient shows these performance stats in GUI mode, I want to find the same log folder in CLI, I am trying to login to DCNM CLI using putty with the same credentials i am using for GUI mode, but the access got denied, How can i get that Log file in CLI.
How can we know when the Memory allocated for collecting these data is full. so that we can collect the past data and delete it from the memory, so that it will save the new data.

    Hello,
DCNM is meant for data centre network management and as such only supports the MDS, Nexus and the 6500 series switches, see the RN under supported Cisco platforms and software:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/6_x/dcnm/release/notes/dcnm_6_2_5a_relnotes.html#pgfId-314209
For the discovery issue DCNM should 'see' the other devices so you need to have a look at your SNMP and CDP (used for neighbour discovery on a per hop basis) settings on each of the devices.
For an software package to manage LAN/WAN environments you really need to be looking at Cisco Prime LMS.
We are going through the same problem, it would be nice to be able to manage the DC and LAN from DCNM.
    Regards
    Daniel Hunter

  • Quote Report - Performance

I have created a quote report with narratives around the opportunity, opportunity-product, and account information. The report contains a pivot table.
I'm getting very hit or miss performance results on the report. Sometimes the report runs faster for all opportunities compared to when its prompted with an opty id from a web link.
Any thoughts? There doesn't seem to be one column that makes a difference.
Also this is not an analytical report as the quotes need to be generated same day.

    Hi Shaik,
Please remove all the join select queries and use 'for all entries' varaiant of the select query. Check whether you can create and use indexes in ur queries.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • IS NOT NULL and performance

I have a performance issue with a query - it would be something like -
    select col1,col2, sum(col3), get_val(col_4)
    from table1
    where
    get_val(col_4) is not null
    group by col1,col2, get_val(col_4)
I have simplified this but it is something similar. This works great - performance is great. Now I commented out the where clause as I needed to populate null values - and that's it the query does not retrieve the resultset - it keeps running forever. With the where clause it comes back in 60 seconds. There is only one row out of 560 rows that has null value for col_4 which i need to display.
    Any help is appreciated.

The only difference I notice between the two sqls is HASH(UNIQUE) -
with IS NOT NULL in where clause -
    SELECT STATEMENT     ALL_ROWS     1598     1     209
    HASH(UNIQUE)          1598     1     209
    HASH(GROUP BY)          1598     1     209
When is not null is removed from the where clause -
    SELECT STATEMENT     ALL_ROWS     1598     1     206
    HASH(GROUP BY)          1598     1     206
I'm guessing that the index is being used in the first scenario and not in the second. Any idea/suggestion as to how to over come this?
    Thanks

  • Issues with WebForm performance

    Hi,
We had migrated a new application from UAT to PROD and we encounter webform performance issues with the following actions..
After login, the first form you open it is
always slow. After this you can switch from one form to another without a
    delay.
Then once you change any data – the next time
you access a form it gets delayed.
The point to be noted is, it doesnt have any performance issues in the UAT environment and the configuration settings, essbase cache settings are all the same. We did try to move the EPM system to a new server to see if this is a hardware issue but no luck, the performance issues still exist. The consumption of the CPU/memory has been checked and it is proved that the form opening delay has nothing to do with lack of memory.
The JVM head settings is set up at 4GB which is infact higher than that of the UAT environment(2GB).
runs on Windows server2008,11.1.2.1.600 EPM serve, has planning, reporting, foundation on one server (32GB ram) and essbase on another server (32GB ram). Any help is appreciated.
