Dconf editor window and hard disk activity

Hello,
For quite some time for me, moving the dconf-editor window causes significant hard drive activity. I don't know why, but moving the window makes the hard drive work hard, and cpu load goes up sharply. Does this happen for anyone else? The hard drive continues working for a fair bit after stopping movement of the window. No other window does such a thing...

4GB files on a 32-bit kernel and you run into what I call a bottleneck.
More RAM helps; and using dual RAID0's also allows for more I/O.
2GB left over falls into the anemia category.
The system drive from other experiments, tests, and benchmarks, does a lot more than just sit there and feed up applications.
And just as a fast SSD or 10K drive, or setting those up in RAID0, offers 240-500MB/sec, your memory bandwidth also plays a role.
When working with 2GB files in CS2 and later, arrays for every volume + whatever RAM you can throw at it helps.
Some operations are still single-thread and hold everything up, when you export or save or write to disk RAID makes up for some of that. A file is written out as temp file, old file is renamed, and when done deleted, while the directory and index are updated. And Spotlight rather than wait for things to be done, CAN get in the way while you work.
I don't know the full gist, but back in G3/G4, SCSI arrays made a big enough difference that I splurged on the full setup (two dual channel controllers driving 15K and 10K drives). And without? it was a real tortoise.
If you think 2GB is 'enough' to run OS X alone, let alone Safari, iTunes, Pages or office apps, let alone any pro apps or ones that need some RAM... CS4+ should have an 8GB system.
And the RAM needs of a Mac Pro have just never been as low or comparable to your desktop or laptop system.
But stay with 4GB if you don't mind.

So, lately, I switched the hard drives in my computer to migrate from Windows XP and install Windows Vista to my machine, everything was going alright with my machine, until I decided to install Skype, as it's the main communications line with me and the internet, and I noticed it now takes up pretty much all of my CPU and hard disk resources when loading all of my contacts and messages after installation, but it finished loading them, and it still uses a high amount of my resources. Skype uses approximately 250MB of memory (Which is kind of high on a system like mine..), it maxes out the processor at around 95-100% utilization, and the hard drive light is on full, as I hear the read head spazzing out on the thing anyways. I was wondering, is this an issue with the latest version of Skype? I can't use older versions since Skype/Microsoft decommissioned them, and it won't even let me log in to them. Could someone possibly help me with this?

  • High hard disk activity caused by systemd-tmpfile

    Hi
I have home server PC running pure, console Archlinux on it 24/7. It works fine for about 3 years and still do, but after systemd transition I noticed that my server periodically runs systemd-tmpfile daemon which causes intensive and continuous hard disk activity.
My /etc/tmpfiles.d is empty, but here is the content of /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d folder:

  • Get CPU and Hard Disk nuber

    Hi Friends,
How to get CPU number it mean Mother bord nuber and Hard Disk number..?
Plz any body know then tell me.
    Thank you,

    JNI = Java Native Interface
Using JNI you can call platform-specific code, for example code written in C or C++ in a Windows DLL. You'll have to write some C or C++ code that does the things you want ("get the harddisk number, motherboard number, ...") and call that C or C++ code from your Java code via JNI.
How you get the "harddisk number" or "motherboard number" in your C/C++ code is a different question that you have to consult the documentation of your operating system for.
Ofcourse you'll need a C/C++ compiler to compile your C/C++ source code into a library that can be called via JNI.

  • Power on and hard disk password issue with rescue and recovery ?

I have set a power on and hard disk password to prevent any unauthorized user to boot the computer and thats works fine but the problem is that it can be bypassed very easily by pressing the THINKVANTAGE blue button and going through the initial screen of the rescovery process.
When you reach the main screen of the recovery process just press on "restart system" and on the next boot up you won't be asked for a password and it will boot into Windows. Is there any way to prevent a user to initiate a rescue and recovery to bypass the password or even better a patch that will trigger the password screen as soon as the blue THINKVANTAGE button is pressed ?

I just recently discovered this problem as well.
I'm hoping someone can help us with this.

  • Problem with Photoshop CS5. Memory and Hard disk space Mac OSX

Just got CS5 Master Suite.  Whenever I open photoshop it takes a ton of memory 1 gig +. When I open  files it takes up more and more until it takes up all my memory and hard  disk space. I open a simple multi layered file that is 25 megs in size  to work on it. Before I know it photoshop is taking 20gigs+ of my hard  disk space along with 3+ gigs of system memory. Is there a memory  problem in photoshop cs5?
    Thanks!
    Joseph
    UPDATE:
So I just opened the 25 meg file  in photoshop cs5 and watched my free space on my hard drive go down 8  gigs the instant I opened it. It went from 27 gigs of freespace to 19  instantly. As I open more files and close others it works till my harddrive goes to zero space... stalls the computer big time. Only way to correct it is to quit photoshop cs5 and wait a few minutes for the space to return... and it takes a few minutes for it all to return.
I am running a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6., 4 gigs of ram on board.

  • Beeping and hard disk failure

    My probook 6470b cannot boot again. Always prompting for memory and hard disk test. Memory passed the test but the hard disk test displays the following;
    SMART CHECK: NOT INSTALLED
    SHORT DST: .NOT INSTALLED.
    Pls help

    Hi:
It appears from the information that you provided that the hard drive has completely failed and needs to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP technical support and file a warranty support ticket to get the drive replaced.
You will also need to have HP send you a set of recovery disks to reinstall the operating system, programs and drivers that came with the notebook.

  • Hp dv4-2112tu no boot no display , ram and hard disk are ok and checked, shows caps num led blinking

    Hello Sir/Madam,
    I have HP DV4-2112TU
My laptop doesn’t boot completely and shows blank black display. CPU fan running normally and hard disk rotating normally.
Battery charging is ok and charging-power led glows normally. Caps lock and Num lock led flashes 3 times and then wait for one second and then flash again and so on. Laptop is stucked in booting process.
I have checked both of my RAMs and Hard Disk in Another Laptop. All are working fine and shows no issues.
I have also checked my laptop installing new RAM in both ports (simultaneously) and a new Hard Disk but Laptop shows same problem - no display no boot.
I showed my laptop at an authorised HP Service Centre... they told me that the problem is related to my Hard Disk....But this is wrong Because a faulty hard disk is never cause no display and no boot and even no BIOS POST message. They told me wrong cause of fault because I have checked Hard Disk and it is OK.
Can anyone tell me what are the issues related to my Laptop..... …..
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
The 3 blink pattern does correspond to issues with the memory modules, see the document below:
Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code
Since it sounds like you've done everything possible to eliminate the memory modules themselves as the source of the problem.  Based on your description, I'd agree that the problem is probably not the Hard Drive.  Which unfortunately leaves us with a problem with the Motherboard as the only component that might be implicated and that hasn't been changed out yet.  It could be as simple as a bad connector, or something less easy to detect in the logic on the board, but either way, it seems like it would need to go back to a service center for repair.

  • Satellite L655-11J - Hard disk activity all the time

    Toshiba please I need help
The first run of my laptop I entered my location my name and a password, I install Toshiba updates and Windows 7 updates (the notifications I got) then I noticed the hard drive is active all the time and the laptop is very slow. I tried a lot to restore the original Toshiba image the built in the laptop and I finally did it thinking maybe I did something wrong
The hard disk drive still always active (don't know what reading or writing) no monitoring for any activity the laptop very slow and lot of seeking sounds.
any solution please, I got this problem the first use of it :(

I know it has a guarantee and they will replace it for free, but it was a gift from Saudi Arabia, I'm now in Syria :( I've to wait until on of my relative go back there :D
I went to Toshiba in Syria they charge my 7 $ to tell me the hard is defective although I knew it was so, and I will need to pay 100$ for a replacement so I will wait ;)
thanks all, it was my mistake, it is just I noticed the HDD light always on in windows 7 and it was not on in USB Linux so I thought it was a system problem, I didn't have much time to work on it and make tests :D
    I'm sorry again

  • Unusual hard disk activity after "Erase free space"

I have two partitions on my hard disk - a small partition for the system software and a big partition for everything else. A few days ago, I backed up a few files from my big partition and then used Disk Utility "Erase free space". Since then, my hard disk is behaving oddly. I can hear it, as if it continuously reading and writting data. At first, I thought it was an auto-update in progress or some sort of automatic system maintenance. But the odd behavior never stopped. I scanned my files with an anti-virus software - nothing wrong. I scanned my files with Disk Utility - nothing wrong. I used Onyx to check the system - nothing wrong. I even erased and reinstalled the system software - no changes! So what could possibly force my hard disk to behave like that? Is something messed up because of "Erase free space"?

    You could run fs_usage
To view file activity for all processes with the fs_usage tool, you would enter the following at the Terminal prompt.
    sudo fs_usage
If you wanted to limit the display to files accessed by a particular process, you could redirect the output through the grep tool. For example, to display file behavior for the TextEdit application, you would enter the following at the Terminal prompt:
    % sudo fs_usage | grep TextEdit
Once your application finishes launching, stop fs_usage by typing Control-C in your Terminal window.
Look for all writes. Might be mdworker (Spotlight)
Try reindexing Spotlight by dragging the HD icon into the Privacy window. Leave it there for a minute and remove it using the minus button.

  • Program For Logging Hard Disk Activity

    Hey Everyone,
I am having an issue with a server in which the Hard disks keep failing, within the last year 3 of them have died.
I am in need of a program that can record logs of the hard drive activity overnight, a period of about 12 hours. This will help us track down at what time the issue is occuring, and then what is causing it. Something similar to the built-in windows hard
disk monitor is task manager, but with the ability to record would be perfect. I have tried other programs but they log in text, and it would take hours of looking through the logs to find any abnormalities
Does anyone know of such a software?

    Might give this a go.

  • Memory Usage And Hard Drive Activity Increase After Latest Upgrade

I have upgraded to Firefox 3.6.15 and latest Adobe Flash Player. Then i noticed that plugin-container started to take a lot of memory as much as Firefox itself totaling around 600Mb. Then i see hard drive activity intermittently slowing down my laptop and making it unresponsive for a short period of time. I have 50 tabs open. I have disabled Flash and since then plugin-container takes very little memory and i don't see consistent hard drive activity.
I need Flash and i don't want to disable it. Is there a solution to this?

I am seeking solutions for same problem.  When playing simple online games such as solitaire my memory usage for the plug in container is 300-600 mb while FireFox may only be 80-120 (with several windows or tabs open of mostly text pages). If I disable Adobe add-ons memory usage is greatly reduced. If I understood correctly it is possible to disable the plugin container and run adobe via the old method and another user thought that would solve the problem. I do not understand how it would make a difference but if you havent found a solution you may want to try it.  See these 2 threads in the Mozilla forum:
A question and brief  explanation  and   how to disable plugin container in config
I've previously had problems with Adobe crashing Firefox . At least now with Adobe being in the plugin container Firefox does not crash along with it.
I have another issue - I can sometimes still hear the music from a game after I have exited the game and closed the window. I would like to know how to release the resources used by Adobe - kind of like FireFox's RamBack.
Well, good luck to you (and me!)

  • Windows HP laptop won't boot Windows - possible hard disk failure!

    Hi there!
A month ago my HP Pavilion dv6-6b57sa completely froze mid-use, and was unable to move the mouse or get any sort of response.
Naturally I held the power button to hard shutdown and restarted. Ever since then I have been unable to boot Windows 7 (the original OS) properly, and all I could get to was a Startup repair which took days to try to fix the issues, eventually coming up with a message saying it was unable to fix the errors.
Today I decided to ditch the data I had stored and do a fresh install - using the HP wizard by pressing F11 on boot and using a newly created USB Windows 7 install drive. After getting to the point of install process of Windows just loading the files, after choosing a hard drive partition successfully etc. the installation quit, citing a number of issues (screenshots link are below).
So I then try to restart the computer, and get a 'SMART Hard disk error' (screenshot link below) and when I select continue startup from there, it says Windows failed to start (screenshot link below) and then leads to me to the Startup repair manager again - which fails again - (screenshot link also below!)
So after doing a hard drive test, it says it has failed (screenshot link also below).
So what can I do? Is there a serious hardware related issue linked with the hard drive (which is bound to cost lots of £££ I bet), or are there further steps I can take?

Yes and you had to at the moment since you won't have a key unless you buy one from Microsoft for about 99 dollars.
Try you best to get the key readble I mean try to read it, good luck!

  • G570: CD/DVD and Hard Disk drives not recognized

I have a Lenovo G570 laptop. It used to run fine until it started taking longer and longer boot into windows. Soon the computer would not boot into windows and instead try to repair windows, which would finish but never actually repair the computer. Soon after that the CD/DVD drive dissapeard from the BIOS, and it hasn't been able to do anything with a CD except for twirl it around (but not let it read any of that beautiful data.) Soon after this the hard disk was no longer recognized. I have been able ot get the computer to boot off of a linux live flash drive, but that's only a temporary fix. I wasn't able to reach any hard disks thorugh linux to back up files, and the CD drive wasn't recognized either. How can I fix this? Thank you for reading this.

    hi argiflex,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
AFAIK, if the HDD/ODD isn't recognized under BIOS then it's a sign that the device is already failing and needs to be replaced.  You can try using a 2.5" SATA Enclosure to read the drive via the USB port on the G570 or on another PC but if the problem remains then you may need to replace the drive.
If the data on the HDD is very important, you can opt to send the HDD to a professional data recovery firm (i.e. DriveSavers) to recover the data.

  • I'm receiving error Boot Device Not Found and Hard disk not exist when I boot up my laptop

I'm receicing the error Boot Device Not Found when i power on my HP G60-235DX laptop.  After following HP's recommended troubleshooting steps, I receive error Hard disk not exist.  Hmmmm....that's a little concerning.  My guess is I need a new hard drive?    I have the 17 recovery disks I made when I setup this laptop, however I'm not sure if they will resolve this issue.  Any suggestions?

One of 3 things has happened, listed from most likely to least likely
    1. Hard drive has died, replace it with one of the same size or larger, then use the HP recovery discs to re-install windows.
2, The motherboard has serious problems. (Replace the notebook)
    3. The hard drive cable that connects it to the motherboard has somehow failed, not very likely. (replace the cable)
Replace the hard drive with a new one and use your recovery discs to get Windows back on it.
Here is your service manual, will show you how to replace the hard drive
