DCR-HC42 Sony

Okay, I bought a Sony DCR-DVD403 for Xmas. The whole family loves it. We have 30 mins of great xmas video on a 8m dvd disc. Hooked up usb cable to my Powwerbook G4 ready to download. Nothing. Sony Tech says I can't. Checked out the Sony DCR- HC42 at the Apple Store. What is the difference? If I get the HC42 will I be able to download and edit my video w/ iMovie 3?

You should get a mini-DV camera (or a Digital-8, but only of you have old analog 8mm/Hi8 tapes).
Bring your PowerBook to the store and try importing/exporting before buying.
The difference is that mini-DV cameras are built to the "DV" standard, which lends itself to editing. A DVD is the final destination: A dead end, NOT intended for editing.

  • Sony DCR-HC42 and Final Cut Pro??

Can anyone verify that the Sony DCR HC42 digital video camera works with an G4 12" iBook and Final Cut Pro 5??
I want to buy this camera but want to make sure I can edit the footage with FCP.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked at Apple's Final Cut Studio web
    site:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/qualif
    ication.html
It doesn't appear on the certified list.
    However, googling the cam reveals:
    http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC42-Cam
    corder-Review.htm
Glad to help, but it's always good to be resourceful
    first.
The real issue is a G4 iBook with no second firewire
bus, the need for a firewire capture disk and FCP5.
You are not going to be very productive with this set
up and there will be issues of DF and throughput.
That iBook can't use much RAM
    best wishes
    Thanks, I appreciate the help.
I had already checked the FCP offical list - sorry did not mention in the post.
I had also checked a lot of other sites and found nothing clearly stating that the DCR-HC42 works with the G4 iBook and FCP - but I had seen a review from a customer (on some site) saying it did not work with thier iMac (where other cameras like Canon had) and they thought that it might be due to a video card issue??
As for the set up - not doing any major editing jobs so I think that I am OK.
Any more info would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Sony DCR-HC42 issue w/PowerBook G4

I just bought my new PowerBook G4 specifically for iMovie. My Sony DCR-HC42, I've now discovered, is one of the few DV cameras that is incompatible.
Anyone know a way to work around this? Do I need to buy a new DV camera?

I feel kinda dumb that I didn't think of that before!)
Oh no! Please don't feel dumb at all! Sony should have made that more clear--I have a feeling there are many out there that don't use their camera because they think it isn't compatible.
    Just glad you asked us!

  • LOST installation CD For Sony Handycam DCR HC42

    Hello Everyone,
Sony won't let you download the installation CD!!! You have to buy it for $70!!! And, all the freeware available is for Windows. I was wondering if you guys had any aolutions b/c my computer isn't recognizing the handycam!
    Thanks

    Hotinthedesert,
How are you connecting the camera to your computer? If you're using the USB cable that came with the camera, that's your problem.
You need a 4-6 pin FireWire cable (Sony calls FireWire iLink). Any store that sells computer accessories should have them. No need to buy a Sony branded cable.
You don't need any drivers or any of the software that Sony has to offer.

  • DCR DVD703E Sony import problems:

Is there any new software known from Sony or has anyone worked their way around importing to imovie.
    Asher Dee

iMovie is meant by concept to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders...
meaning, usb2 and/or DVD as media is NOT supported by this software natively....
there are workarounds, often discussed on this forum:
    a) finalize disks in camera (read manual)
    b) don't stick miniDVDs into slot-in drives! if your disks are non-standard shaped, use an external dvd drive...
    c) convert footage of DVD with one of the following solutions....:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (20$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast6/7 allows converting to dv/import dvd, hit apple-k
using a software outside its specs means loss of convenience & simplicity …
and, what I've seen so far on my Mac, DVDcamcorders don't reach quality compared to miniDV, esp. after editing.... due to the nature of used mp2 compressor (which is a delivery format)
    helpful?

  • Sony DCR-SR40

Hello, I am a new Mac user and am having trouble playing my .mpg files from my DCR-SR40 Sony HD camcorder. I bought iLife 08 in attempts to resolve this, but it still has not resolved the issue. Any suggestions? When I attempt to import the video into iMovie, it does not allow me to even select the videos from the camcorder. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a sony too. I did my research and this was the best camera for my needs, unfortunately I didn't look into the mac compatibility aspect. :P
I still love the camera though. Here's how I got my SR40 to work:
1> Buy QuickTimeMPEG2 playback for $19.99 from apple store http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
2> Download streamclip http://www.squared5.com/ this program will let you convert the MPEG files to Quicktime for editing in iMovie.
3> Install the software and reboot
4> Plug your camera into base and click on that little button on the base (this will allow osx to see the camera)
5> Start the program called Image Capture that came with your mac. It's in the Applications folder. this program will allow you to move the images and movies off the camera to your hard drive.
6> (optional) use streamclip to convert the movies to quicktime so you can use iMovie to edit them.

  • Do you have a Sony camcorder? If so, please post...

I use both iMovie and Final Cut Express HD 3.5 to edit footage and, by no means, am I a pro.
To cut a long story short, I have a Sony DCR-HC42 that, from time to time, fails to be recognized by both Final Cut and iMovie. I'm going thru one of those phases when both programs - installed on my MBP - simply refuse to acknowledge the existence of my camcorder (the camera, however, is recognized by my iMac).
People on the iMovie forum seem to have nothing to say about my problem.
So I'm kind of cross posting here to see if users of FC can shed some light on this problem. I can assure you it's not a cable or port problem (I can see my camera in the System Profiler).
Any help would be most welcome.
    Dan

    Thanks for chiming in.
I had done that just before I decided to post here.
Also, I connected my camera to my iMac with the same cable I use to connect it to my MBP and the camera was recognized. I thought it could be the Firewire port itself on my MBP so I decided to connect an External FW HD to my MBP using my MBP's FW port and the port seems to be working just fine.
A week ago I downloaded and installed the 3ivx Quicktime component. Do you think it could be causing some sort of conflict?
    Thanks for your time!

  • Windows Movie Maker - unable to capture from sony handycam

I am using Sony Handycam DCR-HC2 camcoder and my laptop is sony vaio vgn-nr160e. Before upgrading to windows 7, I was able to capture home made movie with Click to DVD program via i-link cable with vista home.
From the time I update to Windows 7, I am unable to capture home movies. Presently I am using windows movie maker 2.6. When I connect my handycam to laptop with i-link, it won't reconize.
Please some one guide me, we are planning a 2 week vacation and I am going crazy with this issued ( I am an avg tech guy, not a expt)

    I have
    Windows 7 RC
    Sony handycam DCR-TRV19
    Sony iLink cable
    Full Windows Live package installed
    and have had similar results.
With the Sony cable (verses a 4 pin to 4 pin cable) I do get DV IN on the camera when I connect.
But in device manager it does not show up under IEEE or as an Image Device :-(
That's as far as I have gotten. Hoping someone can find the little nugget to get this going.
    Hi
Here are a couple of links that may help.

  • Can't get my Sony DCRSR46 camcorder to work with FCE

I just recently purchased Final Cut Express and had high hopes of using it with my DCR-SR46 Sony Camcorder (which is only a few years old) I've watched all the tutorials of how to open your video from the Log and Transfer, but every time I plug it in it nothing comes up in the Log and Transfer? According to this link http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2948 it says only a few "Tapeless Camcorders" are compatible with final cut express. Is there any way I can get this video from my DCR-SR46 camcorder onto Final Cut Express? Or do I have to buy a completely new camcorder?
p.s. I don't have any trouble downloading video from my camcorder onto iMovie just FCE

  • Sony TRV340 playback missing, iMovie '06 works fine?

I can control, but not capture audio or video from my old DCR-TRV340 Sony (playing Hi8 recordings). Both iMovie 08 and iDvd 08 fail to capture anything (automatic settings give up claiming no video/audio). If I use iMovie '06 that was pre-installed, it captures just fine.
    Any hints?
    Robert

Found something more to this ... Digital 8 recorded tapes work in iMovie '08, but older analog tapes playing through the 340 don't come through in '08, but work in '06.
Could it be that the time code is missing??? The counter doesn't move during playback either.

  • HT3290 I have a Sony handy cam DCRDVD92 NTSC camera. Will i be able to down load to IMovie

I am new to Mac world and i do alot of filming my childrens sporting events. I have a Sony DCR DVD92 NTSC Handycam. Please let me know if i can download to IMovie and if there is a place to walk me through the process?

If your posted Mac OS X (10.2.x) information is correct, your iMovie software may be so old that this will not work, but here is Sony's help on importing from your DCR-DVD92:

  • Sony handy cam downloads

We have recently bought an iMac and I am keen to download the backlog of footage we have on a (rather old) DCR-TRV22E Sony Handycam but the driver disk is only suitable on releases of OS up to 9.2. The Mac doesn't recognize the hardware or the disk.  Does anyone provided updated sets of drivers?

Note that the memory stick that Klaus1 referred to is for capturing stills and also for recording video in the MPEG-1 format. See this CNET review:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_DCR_TRV22/4505-6500_7-20791504.html#reviewPage1
iMovie may have problems importing MPEG-1 video clips, but should work fine with miniDV tape footage recorded by this camcorder (the camcorder's primary recording method). My DCR-TRV20E uses the memory stick for stills only, so I have no experience with MPEG-1. It may need conversion to another format (such as AIC or H.264) before being usable by iMovie.

  • DCR-TRV280

I am trying to capture some video from a DCR-TRV280 Sony Digital8 camcorder. When I go into the Device Control options there is every model but this one. I have the updated driver for Windows Vista and cannot figure out how to capture the video from my camcorder to my computer.
I have video streaming on from the camera settings too.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Try Premiere Elements. That's a consumer program for a consumer camera. Why can't Cs4 at least try to be a pro app and leave the home vid stuff for a program that costs less than the camera?

  • IMovie HD 6, Imported Camcorder DV with Timecode, Displaying in iMovie

After importing a clip from my camcorder into iMovie HD 6.0.1 via FireWire, "Clip Info" does show the time and date the clip was recorded (the time according to the camcorder, not the time it was imported into iMovie).
(Previous posts suggested that the time/date info would not be sent along FW, but in my case it is.)
    Camcorder is Sony DCR-HC42.
Displaying relative date/time information, like is offered in many plugins, is not an option; I want to see the date/time the clip was recorded on the camcorder.
So now I want that information to be super-imposed on my clips for the first few seconds of each clip. What setting or plugin do I need to make this happen?

Timecodes can be added as an effect.
