DCR Shows Ip address instead of Hostname in Ciscoworks LMS 3.1
I've struck a problem with not being able to update the device hostnames when I do a discovery.
I'm aware of bug CSCsv65933 Discovery does not update display name in DCR and have ordered an upgrade.
I am still concerned however that there may be something more fundamentally wrong in the name resolution process.
Testing name resolution using the resolver.pl script fails for reverse lookups. Reverse lookups using nslookup work fine (output below)
D:\Program Files\CSCOpx\bin>perl resolver.pl 192.168.36.7 BNE3750-A-L31
d:\PROGRA~1\CSCOpx/www/classpath/com/cisco/nm/cmf/desktop
Original name: 192.168.36.7
Hostnames/IP Addresses:
/192.168.36.7
Original name: BNE3750-A-L31
Hostnames/IP Addresses:
BNE3750-A-L31/192.168.36.7
D:\Program Files\CSCOpx\bin>nslookup 192.168.36.7

Address: 192.168.0.21
Name: bne3750-a-l31.acme.com.au
Address: 192.168.36.7
Based on other posts I studied it would appear that resolver.pl should do reverse lookups. Any clues why it might be failing for me.
it seems you are seeing the following 2 bugs:

CSCsv65933 for the problem that the device name does not get updated in DCR;
you have two options, contact TAC to get the patch or update to LMS 3.2

CSCsq54877 Bug Details
resolver.pl may not properly resolve IP to hostname.
Symptom:
The resolver.pl tool may not properly resolve IP Address to hostname. This problem occur although the proper resolution path exists.
However, the resolver.pl tool properly resolves IP Address to hostname.
Conditions:
This occurs anytime when an IP address argument is passed to resolver.pl.
Workaround:
Use the nslookup or host command from the Operating System to get proper lookup results, if If the IP address has a PTR DNS record.
However, if the IP address is listed in the local hosts file, there is no workaround

Ciscoworks Expert needed--RME show IP address instead of hostnames
Please take a look at the pics,
In RME and many other modules, it display the IP addresses , instead of the Hostnames as the ID for the devices(we want to use the hostnames for the devices). I saw the settings at Common Service/Global Setting was at IP(see the attach pictures). I then changed it into SysName and rediscover the devices. It didn’t work. It shows the same thing.
Anyone can advise me how to correct it?
thanks,

JDBC Connections showing IP Address instead of Hostname
We have recently installed BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1 with SP4. Our first implementation of BEA WebLogic Server was with 6.1 with SP3. The JDBC Datapool connections to our SQL Server showed the Hostname of the physical machine the BEA Server was on, in addition to the application it was using to connect with. The current implementation of 8.1 with SP4 shows the IP address instead of the Hostname and DOESN'T show the application that is being used to connect with. Is there any way to force it to show the hostname and the application it's using to connect to the SQL server via the JDBC connection pool?

Prompt shows IP address instead of domain/host
Our server is setup at 10.0.1.1 (actually it is at public IP address. Here I am giving this like that). Our DNS server (on another system) maps this IP to ourdomain.net. Everything was working fine. If anyone logs into the server, he will get prompt like this:
ourdomain:~
All of a sudden, this started showing our IP address instead of ourdomain at the prompt. DNS is working fine. I checked host and dig. But for some reason, IP address is showing up. How can I fix this ?
Appreciate any help.
Thanks !You mean when logging in using ssh?
You say you checked the DNS but is this IP used publicly and the DNS IP used on that server you own ("public") DNS which is the DNS responsible for public lookups (SOA) of that servername/domain?
If it is a public server and the DNS is correct any public DNS IP/server (which allows recursion from your IP) can be used on that server to look itself up.
What does "hostname" in terminal on that server say?
Remove any HOSTNAME=-ourdomain.net- from /etc/hostconfig on that server. -
SM51 displays ip address instead of hostname
Hi,
We have built a dailog instance on Linux and In SM51 under the hostname column we are seeing the ip address instead of name of host. We tried setting the parameter SAPLOCALHOST in instance parameter of the dailog instance but we have no luck. Can some one help.
Thanks in advance.Hi,
Please Make an Entry of host name of Application Servers in the /etc/hosts file of all (CI & DI) servers, Ensure that there will not be duplicate entries in the /etc/hosts file it may conflict the host name issues.

Detailed Navigation not displaying giving ip address instead of hostname
Hi
I created applications in web dynpro. So i imported in the Enterprise Portal.
In that I created Role----Under That Worksets (X ,Y ,Z, W) -For each workset I created more than 4 Pages to that---For each page i added Iview.
I added "IP Address" and "HostName" in the c:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/host
Then i login into the Portal with normal URL
http://<HostName>:50000/irj/portal
So its Displaying.....Up to this its fine...
If suppose i want to login with
http://<IP Address>:50000/irj/portal....Under Each Workset, one page is showing,,,means one Iview is Visible...means Detailed Navigation is not showing.
All Pages are not visible...
Please any one help me to do this....
So its not possible to say to anyone ,,,,u have to add this ip Addrss in the path.
Please Provide the Permanent solution ,,even by giving IP address also all pages and Iviews must see..
Regards
SushmaHi Sushma,
I am not sure if the same apply when you access the URL through the IP. The SAP BI works on the concept of Fully Qualified domain names for access and also there is a system of web dispatchers which are configured for the domain name to handle report requests.
Also with portal in place you will not be able to see the URL of the application running within portal
for example the URL we see are
ttp://<xyz>.com/irj/portal but then the individual URLs for the applications running within the portal cannot be seen...due to security reasons.
That could be the possible case.
Regarding Use of Portal at client place:
1. You can use the VPN connectivity. You will only need to give the access rights to the perticular id & that will be all.
2. Assign the portal port to the some global address. That will work.
But, I suggest, VPN is better.

Cannot protect SharePoint farm that uses SQL server IP address instead of hostname?
Hello, I am trying to configure DPM 2012 R2 protection for a SharePoint 2013 farm. The DPM agent was installed on the WFE and SQL server and they are reporting a "OK" status from the DPM console. ConfigureSharePoint.exe -EnableSharePointProtection
was also ran on the WFE. When I try to set up my protection group and expand the WFE server I get the following error:
"DPM cannot protect some of your datasources until you install agents on the following servers : 10.1.1.12. (ID: 956)"
That IP address is the SharePoint SQL server IP address. For whatever reason the person who installed this SharePoint farm configured it with the IP address of the SQL server instead of a DNS name.
I know the DPM agent is working properly on both servers because I can enumerate their volumes and databases. I'm certain this error is due to SharePoint using an IP address for the SQL server instead of a DNS name or alias. Is there a workaround for this? The fix for this may be to add SQL server client on the frontend and then add aliases for 32 and 64bit to the backend sql servers.

NAM shows MAC address instead of IP address in host
Hi,
Product: Cisco Prime NAM Appliance 2304
Version: 5.1(3)
Problem: We only can see MAC address on Hosts table in NAM, not IP address.
Does anyone know what happen and how to fix it?
Thanks!!!I wouldn't worry too much about the address shown in the Remote Management tab. The ARDAgent process, which is what is listening on his computer for connections from Remote Desktop, binds to all active network interfaces and ultimately that's all that matters. Of out curiosity though, to what IP address does the "unknown-b8-8d-##-##-##-##.home" dns name resolve? Is it the WAN address? I can't imagine it resolves to a private address like a 192.168.
In any event, let's focus back on the network structure. Does the BT router have both a hard wired LAN ethernet port as well as a WiFi radio for LAN connections? My guess is yes. I am also assuming that he does *not* have another router attached to the BT LAN ethernet port like an Airport basestation that is serving the WiFi connections. Typically, the LAN ethernet port is given, via DHCP, a real Internet accessible address but the addresses served via DHCP for wireless clients are private network addresses only. It's seems unlikely to me that the router is automatically forwarding incoming connections to a private network address on the WiFi network. But if he plugs his Mac in to the ethenert LAN port on the BT router then you should be able to connect directly to the address given to it via DHCP because it *should* be a real Internet accessible address. -
LMS 4.2.1 Discovery IP instead of hostname
Hi,
we use LMS 4.2.1 and we noticed a strange behaviour when starting a discovery. From aprox. 160 devices some devices are displayed as IP Address instead of hostname. Every device is DNS resolvable and has a value for "hostname"
I´ve tried every possible option in the global discovery settings but some devices have the IP instead of their hostname
Can you tell me how to fix this? Thank you.
ChrisDNS is often not understood and just as often implemented badly
When it is working correct you can do 2 things:
ping hostname
will start ping towards the IP address of the host.
ping -a
will resolve the ip to a hostname if possibe and then start a ping towards the IP address.
Often only the first works. Reverse lookup is required by LMS as well.
if you can fix the DNS you can always create a local hosts file
Cheers,

my iphone just stopped connecting to my wifi and i have tried all the recommended troubleshooting with no success. Also when i send a text , it shows it coming from my email address instead of my cell #. i dont receive any text going to my cell #. help
If i understand what you are saying then you are seeing the WiFi indicator after connecting but Apps are saying that they are not connected to the internet?
Your router may not have given your iPod a valid IP address. Go to Settings > Wifi > your network name and touch the ">" to the right to see the network details. If the IP address starts with 169 or is blank then your router didn't provide an IP address and you won't be able to access the Internet.
Sometimes the fix can be to restart your router (remove power for 30 seconds and restart). Next, reset network settings on your iPod (Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings) and then attempt to connect. In other cases it might be necessary to update the router's firmware with the latest from the manufacturer's support web pages.
If you need more help please give more details on your network, i.e., your router make, model and version, the wifi security being used (WEP, WPA, WPA2), etc. -
Email recipient showing up as "()" instead of the email address
Issue: Email recipient showing up as "()" instead of the email address
Details: When "()" shows up, he is using Mac Mail to send out his email. This happens sporadically, we haven't noticed any patterns.Programs usually aren't the biggest culprits in terms of space usage, it's normally data files that take up more space. This kind of huge library really is best installed on an external drive, provided you don't mind carrying it around with you. Here's how you install it on an external:

Why do text messages from my iPad appear to some people as if they came from my email address instead of my phone number? This does not happen when I send text messages from my iPhone.
You need to link your iPhone number to Messages - and Facetime if you use it. For Messages go to Settings>Messages>Send and Receive at>You can be reached by iMessage at. If your phone number is showing there, select it as your Contact address. If it doesn't appear in there, take a look at the end of this article for help.
iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support -
When I send an email it displays the full email address instead of just the name even thought the person is in my contacts. How to fix?
Hi Sunny C,
Welcome to the Support Communities! The "From" field should be showing by default, but you can check or change your settings for Mail with the instructions below:
Mail (Yosemite): Set Mail preferences
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19178
In the Composing pane, you can set the email account that you want to send new messages from.
Also, check the View command on the Menu bar. View > Message Attributes should have a checkmark beside the "From" field.
Cheers,

Printer showing MAC address in sidebar
I have just setup a Canon MX850 printer on my home network and the MAC address of it is showing in the sidebar. The only way to remove it is to change the sidebar preferences which I don't want to do as I want to see other servers on the network. How do I change the printer settings to show the MX850 instead of the printers MAC address?
I have never seen this with any of my Canon printers. I have an iP5200R that is connected wirelessly to my network and an iP6000D that is connected to the USB port of an Airport Extreme. When I configured the iP5200R to join my wireless network, it was displayed in the Canon utility with its MAC address. Also, when I added its printer queue using More Printers > Canon IJ Network, the printer was also shown in the list with its MAC address. However, as I write this reply this printer does not display in any part of the Finder.
Is the printer displayed under the Shared section in the sidebar?
Also, how is the printer connected to your network? Is it being shared by another computer or is it connected via Ethernet or wireless?

IIS Logs display CSS11501 IP address instead of external source IP address.
(FW)---(CSS11501)---(SERVERS)
Basic configuration, everything on VLAN1. Servers in web farm are logging attacks, etc. Source IP address all show the CSS instead of the originating IP address coming from the outside.
What do I need to add/change to allow servers to see the actual IPs from the outside?Yes, inline configuration. FW connects to L2 switch crossed over to CSS, Servers are connected to CSS ports directly. However the servers Default Gateway is the FW not the CSS, that is what I believe I need to change in order for it to work, is that correct, or is there something else?
Example:
circuit VLAN1
ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
owner xyz
address "xyz"
content rule.100.https
protocol tcp
port 443
url "/*"
add service serv.1.https weight 1
add service serv.2.https weight 2
add service serv.3.https weight 3
vip address x.x.x.100
application ssl
advanced-balance ssl
sticky-mask 255.255.255.0
sticky-inact-timeout 15
dnsbalance roundrobin
balance srcip
active
group source.100
vip address x.x.x.100
add destination service serv.1.https
add destination service serv.2.https
add destination service serv.3.https
