DDE Server issue

We recently upgraaded to Adobe XI and started recieving a an error stating, "Cannot find DDE server". How can we fix the issue?

There's some insight here. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/adobe-cannot-c onnect-to-dde-server/96e2a633-2f96-45ff-a0e7-74ce24e56e12

  • DDE Server Name issue

    Hi,
I have installed Adobe Reade X on my machine.
For an application I need to use DDE.
For previous versions of Adobe Reader, the DDE SERVER Name = "Acroview" worked fine.
But for this particular version DDE Server name name is AcroviewR10.
Is there a way to find out the server name from registry?
Earlier the registry path HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application had the value "Acroview".
Even for the latest version the value is the same.
Any help would be highy appreciated.

I'm adding myself to this forum in hopes to be notified of some resolution.  Our application uses DDE to print PDFs. We have a wide range of customers who are not necessarily experts at maintaining their systems, so we need to be able to reliably determine which version (either Reader or Acrobat) is installed.
We have a number of in house VM machines for testing in various states of reader updates and I have yet to see the registry key have the correct version.  This seems like it should be a pretty simple thing.  We do not want to have to go back to a simple Shell command.
    I will stay tuned.
Also - I have not seen that this is reliable in version X yet, if someone knows differently please say so, so we can at least support that version.  Thanks.

  • Windows 7 64 bit apps crashing, dde server error

Hi, I am having problems with a new Windows 7, 64 bit system. Acrobat 9 frequently crashes programs when it's invoked, for instance when trying to print a web page to PDF from Firefox, or making a PDF from a Word document. Firefox or Word will crash, with no errors. Acrobat is also giving these errors freqently: "Fatal error: failed to connect to dde server"
Other installed apps include MS Office 2007 and Symantec Endpoint Protection, SAS JMP, Endnote.
    thanks for any suggestions.

  • Failed to connect to DDE Server Acrobat XI Pro Windows 8.1

I had installed Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows 8.0 notebook computer and it was working fine. When I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few months ago, I started getting intermittent problems/error messages when I would try to open a pdf file by doubleclicking on the file either in a folder or on the desktop. The file wouldn't open and the error message was "Failed to connect to DDE Server." I can still open the files by doing a File, Open from inside the software, so it's not an insurmountable problem, just annoying.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi TreeLady ,
Thanks for posting on forums, DDE server was a part of Windows XP, it was removed from Windows Vista and above. However, if you are getting this error in Acrobat, try the following.
(This error occurs when you have more than 1 process of Acrobat running)
    1) Go to the task manager by presiing Ctrl+Alt+Del
    2) Go to the processes in Task Manager
    3) End all processes related to Acrobat
    4) Launch Acrobat again.
Also, to find the root couse or to isolate the issue you can try the following.
    1) Click on start
    2) Type RUN
    3) Type MSCONFIG
    4) Go to services
    5) Hide all Microsoft services
    6) Disable all Services (Except Microsoft)
    7) Restart your machine
    8) Launch Acrobat to check if you get the issue.
This would help us to understand if Acrobat or any other third party process is not allowing Acrobat process to end causing a conflict .
    Thanks,

  • Fatal Error: Failed to connect to DDE server

I've read the other posts about this problem, but none seem to fit my situation.
This happened while trying to use a 3rd party program Typhoon AutoRun to test autorun files for CDs of our Ebooks that we're burning. Each of these Ebook CD projects has 6 PDF files to open; 1 Mobipocket, 1 HTML. Of course, the only problem occurs with the PDF files.
Let me start by saying that I was using Acrobat 6 until September, when we upgraded to CS 4, and never experienced this issue.
And after installing Acrobat Pro 9, I hadn't any difficulty until TODAY.
Order of events: I opened a past completed project in Typhoon Autorun to test the file before burning to CD.
When I clicked on one of the PDF document buttons, the first thing that happened was Adobe Active X 9 attempted to run. BUT the Active X failed to install on the first attempt:
    "Error 1904.Module
C:|WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9f.ocx failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel."
The Typhoon Autorun program continued operating and opened the project's PDF documents without any difficulty -- all 6 opened, one after the other, when I clicked on their buttons.
I closed out the error message, closed out the Typhoon Autorun project I was testing to work on another Typhoon Autorun project. When I had that one finished, I tested it as I had the one previous.
This time when I clicked on a button to open one of the PDF button, the Adobe Active X 9 program loaded and INSTALLED successfully.
THEN, the PDF document opened. But when I attempted to open any of the other 5, they did nothing. I double-checked my Typhoon Autorun project files, but all of the settings were correct. I tried testing my project again. This time NONE of the PDF files would open.
I closed the Typhoon Autorun program and attempted to open Acrobat Pro 9 immediately after. I tried clicking on the shortcut button several times with no result. After several minutes, literally, I received the "Fatal Error: Failed to connect to DDE server" --- actually, several instances of that message to correspond with all the times I'd attempted to open the program.
I shut down my computer, rebooted, reopend Typhoon Autorun and tried to test a different project.
Again, Adobe Active X 9 installed. (If it's already installed why is it reinsalling???)
And again, only 1 PDF file would open. Then none of the others. I shut down Typhoon Autorun and tried to open Adobe Acrobat again, and it wouldn't open.
The problem seems to be appearing when Adobe Active X 9 installs, and it's doing that automatically, without asking.
I never had this problem when I used Adobe Acrobat 6 (I'm really beginning to regret upgrading)
I never had this problem before this Active X 9 started installing.

No solution I am afraid but same problem, running full version of AVG and problem hit immediately after Adobe Reader 9.1 upgrade.  Pretty darn sure problem is in the upgrade but the relevant Restore Point was overwritten before I figured it out.  Any advice welcome.

  • Cannot open PDF as cannot connect to DDE Server

We have Adobe Reader X installed on our server and it seems only one person is having this issue...
When she goes to open a PDF file, it states that it cannot open the file as it cannot connect to the DDE server. She also cannot open Adobe Reader X. Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

  • DDE Server Window Error Exiting InDesign 7.5.1 (CS 5.5)

I just installed CS 5.5 on an XP SP3 PC.  We previously used CS2.  I had the user open files created under CS2 InDesign in the new CS 5.5 InDesign.  The files opened and displayed with no issues in InDesign.  However, when she exits InDesign she gets a DDE Server Windows error dialog box.
DDE Server Window: InDesign.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x#####b##" referenced memory at "0x###d#f##".  The memory could not be "read".
I ran all updates for InDesign and it shows as version 7.5.1.
I saw a post in the PhotoShop forums of the same type of DDE error if you open a file and exit without saving, but it does not matter if I save the file or do not save the file.  I still get the DDE error when exiting InDesign.
Any ideas on how to resolve the error?
    Thanks,
    Rick

    of course, missing links! Dóh!
2 weeks ago we upgraded 3 of 8 PC from CS4 to 5.5.
All 3 PC´shave the same issue with the same files. the other 5 computers are working still with CS4, without a problem on the same file!
adobe often causes different problem in the company, so we know about the Adobe cleaner tool.
I have deinstalled cs4, run the cleaner tool and then installed cs5.5. I hope i dont have to reinstall again...
I dont work myself with Adobe products, but i have to troubleshoot, which is not easy if you dont know how it works...

  • I can not open any pdf file... . Fatal error. Acrobat has failed to connect a DDE server

    fatal error

    What can I do?

Did you register and activate Acrobat? I don't remember the DDE issue off hand, but it should not be occurring with the regular Acrobat installation.

  • "Acrobat Failed to Connect to DDE server"

    Hi
I get a fatal error when I try to open a PDF document by double clicking on it. I am using version 10.1.4.
It just started recently. It was working before. I don't know why it is not working now.

    Hi,
No, the Privileged key is not present at all in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\.
I See a field AdobeViewer in which I see "TrustedMode" set to 0.
Also I noticed that the value for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application is "AcroviewR10" even after the restart.
But What I found was that the shockwave flash plugin is causing some problem with Acrobat reader. WHen ever I enable this plug in I am not able to view the PDF documents and I get the original  error "Failed to connect with DDE server". If I disable the plugin and restart then I am able to view the docs. But I can't browse web sites which need flash plugin. So I dn't know what exactly is the issue here..
    Any more suggestions?

  • I've downloaded acrobat XI Pro, installed it, but get "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server error message.

I've downloaded acrobat XI Pro, installed it, but get "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server error message.

    Hi Bruce,
Please open registry by typing "regedit" in the Run window (Windows + R)
Now, navigate to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application and changing the Key from "AcroviewA10"  to  "AcroviewR10.
Now, try launching Acrobat and let me know if the issue resolves.

  • I have Acrobat XI on a PC and have received a Fatal Error message indicating that "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE Server."  Acrobat will not open now.  How do I regain access to the program?

I have Acrobat XI on PC.  After trying to convert a webpage to PDF, I received a Fatal Error message indicating that "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE Server."  Now, the program will not open.  How do I regain access to the program?

I have Acrobat XI Pro and have been experiencing all sorts of "freeze ups" with it ever since Adobe released the new Acrobat DC the other week.  I see that an automatic update was pushed down to my Acrobat XI Pro at the same time.  Is this the first issue you have encountered with your Acrobat XI, or have you been having other issues suddenly as well??  Just wondering ...

  • Windows 8 - failed to connect to DDE server error

I installed Adobe Reader 11 on my new Windows 8 PC.  It would not open properly and gave me the message "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server" when I tried to use it.  I uninstalled Adobe Reader 11 and installed Adobe Reader 10.  I am still getting the message "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server"  when I try to open the reader and look at a file in Adobe Reader 10.  Is there a compatibility issue with using Adobe Reader in the Windows 8 operating system or do I have a setting configured wrong on my new machine?

    Hey Lisa,
Yep, I'm now having this same issue on Win8 / Adobe Reader 11.0.02 after about a week of perfect function with Adobe Reader set as default association for PDF files (I don't particularly care for Windows Reader).
I simply re-downloaded and reinstalled Adobe Reader 11.0.02 from MajorGeeks (safe repository for many things IT guys need - go here -> for that:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/Adobe_Reader_d3852.html)
I made Adobe Reader default for opening PDF files and then checked to make sure it was working... Worked fine for now anyway.  I have also seen on a number of other systems where Windows Reader seemed to get in the way of proper Adobe Reader function, so in those cases I also reinstall Adobe Reader 11.0.02 and that seemed to repair the issue!
I do hope this works for you, if not, Adobe will, no doubt, release an update shortly.
    Blessings,
    -Daddio

  • When opening pdfs with windows explorer I get "fatal error unable to connect to dde server"

I can't open pdfs using windows explorer. I double click, nothing happens, and after ten minutes I get the error message "fatal error Acrobat failed to connect to DDE server."
I can however open the file if I open it in acrobat, although it is very slow.
I always download the latest version of acrobat indeed did so last week. I'm on windows 7. I've had acrobat for many years on this machine and OS and never had this problem.

    Hey Eric,
I’d suggest you to uninstall Adobe Reader XI using this cleaning tool Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs and re-install Adobe Reader using this link Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions to fix the issue.
Re-install the program in administrator mode. Locate the program icon, right-click and select as “Run as administrator”.
Let me know if the issue persist.
