DDR Memory on MSI 6378 MB

I just upgraded the memory on a K2M2 MB (6378) from 512 m PC 133 to 768 M PC 2100.  The PC 133 is Micron and the PC 2100 is Crucial.
In the BIOS I set the new memory to be detected by SPD and judging from the values shown, the MB has done so.  Question is this.  Sandra Soft scores the new memory bandwidth low at a value of about 1350 rather than the near 2000 I was expecting.  System seems to run fine.  How can I establish the true memory speed?  There are limited options in the K2M2 BIOS, is there anything obvious I overlooked changing when I did the upgrade?
Thanks,
Joe

Yet another example of creaping senility on my part.  Yes, my board is a 6378 KM2M Combo L.
You may disregard my BIOS question though I still don't understand what the automated MSI update facility is telling me when it says my BIOS is current at the 3.55 revision level.   It must be the way MSI refers to VIA 4 in 1 chipset drivers.   I verified that I was, in fact,  running BIOS v1.3, performed the flash to v1.4 and then reloaded PC Alert 4, changing the chipset temperature alert to remove the annoying alarm and then enabling Cooler XP.
Cooler XP works and now takes my system down to 48-50C idle and low 50's load.
I too, have a 4-5 degree disparity between what PC Alert 4 and MBM 5 report.  As you say, go figure.
Although I earlier wasn't inclined to do so, I'm going to buy another heatsink and see if things improve further.
Here's a Holy Grail type question:
What is a good HSF/fan comb that doesn't sound like the APU on an aircraft?  I've got a drawer full of either poor performing or really noisy units.
Thanks for the solid advice.

  • KT3-U2 MSI & DDR memory issues

I Have a brand new 'out'a-the-box' KT3-U2 MSI M.B. that I've never been able to powerup past a boot memory test.
It will not get past the (led D-bracket) memory test [:.].  I've tried (3) different brands of DDR (new) RAM and get same mem test failure everytime.
The memory has all tested good. I've read, and been told, some ugly stories about the KT3u2 board and its quirky dislike for (some?) DDR memory, but no 'concrete' evidence. I've asked MSI (by email) and get NOTHING!
The guys hanging around comp tradeshows tell me to try Samsung DDR's - and I got the same failed mem test with it.
All the simple 0|1|2 wiggle-giggle tricks have been tried.
HELP! Please. What I need is a phone number to MSI or any Tech people who know this board -"hands-on"[/I] -(i'm in So. Florida if it matters).
If that fails, I plead my case to ??who-knows-who?? with MSI, or just junk that $100.00 bucks.
Makes no since. This is the first problem I've ever had setting up an MSI board.....
Question: Have any of you experienced anything like this with (DDR) mem on the KT3-U2? What unconventional tricks did you use to overcome the problem?
    Sys:
    M.B. MSI KT3-U2 ver. (MS-6380E) - w/VIA KT333
    AMD pc2100 Athlon
    (2) Samsung 256m DDR PC2700U mem (latest)
New case w/350w. PS (voltages to board ck. good, all else powered up to go).
    MSI nVidia g4/MX440-T8X AGP8 (602-8895-040)
    Pacific Digital CD/RW
    NEC DVD
    3.5 Sony diskette
    WD 80gig HD
    OS WinXPpro

I don't think the 8X AGP cards maters because i ran a KT333 ultra Aru with Bios 5.7v AMD 2500+ 3x512 of DDR 2700(333) and a GeForce 4 Ti4200 8x 128meg with out any problems. just make sure you use the right Ram slots like, one stick of ram should be in slot #1 and two sticks of ram should be in #1 and #3 for best results.
also for what it is worth: I would remove all hardware from your case and place your mother board on a peice of cradboard then add you ram and processor, video card power and power switch (Don't need hard drive) then turn on power and do you testing like that you will have more space to work in for trouble shooting. Then when you can get into the Bios and set it up the way tou want restart, then power down and then replace your hardware back into your case and load windows or run your windows

  • Experiences mixing DDR memory modules

Would you people post here experiences mixing DDR memory modules in order to help me/others take buying decisions?
I currently have a PC2100 256MB Samsung module and a MSI KT266 PRO2 and want to buy a new module.
As I  cannot find one similar to the one I already own want to assign a success likelihood before taking my decision.
    Thanks in advance Gustavo.-

Had a similar problem afew week's ago. I've got 2 identical stick's of 256Mb Samsung original DDR333 Cas 2.5, decided to upgrade to 1Gb and bought a stick of 512Mb Geil DDR333 (GL2000 Chips) Cas 2.5 for 45 quid. Installed the Geil in slot 2 (with the samsung sticks in slots 0 and 1) booted up o.k
bio's and windows detected the ram just fine.
After rebuilding the windows page file I started to test the extra ram by running 3dmark 2001 but kept getting  BSOD's (Irq's less then..., Page faults in non ...etc) mid way through the test's. I went in to the bio's and relaxed the ram timing's to spd, no change. Increased the ram voltage's, no change.
So I thought I'd do a fresh install of windows, but 3/4 of the way through copying the files off the windows cd I kept getting 'can't copy xxxx file from the cd', tried cleaning the cd, tried a backup cd same problem, took the samsung memory out and just put the Geil stick in slot 0, the system wouldn't even boot, but with the samsung stick's in on there own window's installed o.k. I tried the Geil stick in another system, which booted up without a hitch. So finaly I just took the Geil stick out and gave it back, the suppliers tested it and found it to be o'k and charged me 20 quid for the privalage, Ba%&!%@s.
Last week I borrowed a stick of 512Mb Twinmos DDR333, same problem's as the Geil. Seem's like they don't make them like they used to and I'm doomed to 512Mb with this board.

  • MSI-6378 Question please....

    Dear all
I have a computer with the MSI-6378 mother board. I'm sure it's very dated, but I would like to increase the RAM which is currently 256MB. Ideally, I would like to increase it to the max which is up to 1.gig?? What would be the best RAM for my PC. If you would want a spec of my PC can you tell me how to get the correct info??? Sorry
Also, I'd like to know exactly how to benchmark the PC to know how well it is performing. If you can help me with these questions I'd be very grateful.
Please accept my apologies if this is in the wrong section and my lack of knowledge on the subject.
    Kind regards
    Hackbridge

I am sorry I am being so slow to respond to these questions: I'm at work and will look at the post properly when at home.
However, I have seen this Crucial RAM being advertised. Is it compatible with this Motherboard can anyone tell me??

  • Msi 6378 - dead, hissing sound

    Hi,
I have only a cpu and memory plugged into my MSI-6378. (Has integrated VGA)
When I turn it on all is normal for about 15 seconds, then I hear a faint hissing sound - seems to be coming from one of the capacitors near the cpu, then the system shuts down. If I restart it the same thing happens after about 3 seconds.
I've tried a different Power supply and memory. The CPU works fine in another motherboard.
Has anyone else heard of this problem? The board is 1.5 years old so the shop I got it from doesn't want to know about it.
Is there any way to get a replacement from MSI?

  • DDR Memory, what's the difference?

I have a MSI KD7 Master-L and a 512mb Registered DDR chip. I can get my hands on some pretty cheap DDR memory but it's unregistered. Now the board says it supports unregistered memory on the first two banks.
My question is that's the difference between unregistered and registered memory? Will having both effect my speed?
I know registered memory has some sort of buffer it holds the data in for a fraction of a second. But speed wise I don't understand the difference.
     ?(

your boards best with registered, its self error checking
and i would not advise mixing the 2 types myself
mixing makes on normal ddr is a disaster most times

  • Dual Channel DDR Vs. DDR Memory, etc.

So I'm in the process of upgrading again and was hoping to add a little more memory to my system.  With all the different types of memory out there it starts to become a little confusing as to how much bang your going to get for your buck and the pitfalls of marketing  ?( .  Currently i'm looking into Dual Channel DDR since this is the new craze.  I currently have 1 512MB stick of PC3200 DDR memory that I plan on replacing with 1GB (2) sticks of Dual Channel DDR PC3700 or PC4000.  The difference is 60 bucks and I'm wondering...is it worth the extra cash for PC4000?  It's Corsair memory which I currently have never had problems with but it is a little pricier than the generic memory out there.
Is it possible that the only reason to do something like this would be overclocking or is my system going to use the full extent I give it (Or am I putting myself in line so that my memory will be able to support future cpu, etc. upgrades).  My specs are below, feel free to ask questions.  I appreciate any replies in advance.  )
    Thanks again,
    -MaD

So i\'ve been getting alot of crashes since i purchased this board but more so when I installed the new memory.  This last round produced another error message that was logged with microsofts OCR tool.  The debug information was submitted and handed back as a memory problem.  I downloaded their DOS memory tool to test memory and tried the motherboard with a bunch of different configurations.  Here\'s what I found:
4 different sticks of memory at any configuration produced Failures on WMATS+, WINVC and would eventually lockup the system.
    I went to the processor....
3 different processors all generated failures with any of the same memory configurations.
I tested all memory sticks in a different system with no failure.  It ran 5 passes and even an extended test without failure.
I disconnected my drives from the MB (currently running disk striping on IDE 3, not sure if that is even effective since they are both on the same ide channel.  What's up with only one?? and 2 for SATA) and ran the same tests with the memory and none have failed.  If i connect the drives and turn of the RAID bios once again all tests + extended pass.
So leads to my question...How do I fix this?  I was running a Soyo P4X400 before with Disk striping on two seperate channels and I wanted to bring that same performance to this board.  Not sure though if i\'m getting that though...let alone the current problem it has with memory when it\'s enabled.
Any help is appreciated, I dont mind being the Gunnuie pig if it helps other people in the process.  I\'m just happy i dont have bad RAM, CPU, and possible the board.   )

  • MSI 6378 and XP

Hi I have built the following system
    MSI-6378
    AMD XP2000+
    Maxtor 60Gb HDD
    AOpen CD-RW
    Epson C42UX
    Genius Vivid 3XE Scanner
    256Mb PC133 Mem
    MS XP Pro
I have set two user profiles in XP but after a while computer resets then damages one then both the profiles.  Have tried re-install with same effect.
Installed Win 2000 pro.  Set up two user profile.  Computer resets and will not enter second profile.
Re-installed with one profile.  PC still resets but can return to profile.  I had a page-fault error when re-installing.
Turning off power management in BIOS means PC will not even start Win 2000.
Updated 4in1 drivers pc seems better.
Cannot install USB scanner now - does not recognise correct ID and so doesn't load correct drivers.
    Questions:
    1) Has anyone had these problems
    2) Does it sound like motherboard is damaged - how can I tell.
    3) Why are 4in1 and video drivers on MSI site, older than the ones on the VIA site.
    4) Any suggestions about scanner.  It works on another PC with VIA chipset and 2000.  Also worked under XP with this PC.
    Cheers

    Hi,
You can't just replace the mainboard and expect Windows to start again.
You could repair Windows, but if you don't know how, install Windows from scratch again.
BTW your CPU should run at 133FSB :D

  • MSI-6501 and 4GB DDR memory

Hi, if I'm installing 4 1GB DDR registred my K7D Master MS-6501 hangs up before memory testing, while using 3 1 GB DDRs, or 3 1 GB DDRs + 1 512 MB DRR everything is fine. I updated to the last BIOS version, without any success. (DDRs are registred ECC Samsung PC2100).
Is there anything I can do?

Now, try with the RAM in just slot 5 only. If it works in slot 5 but not slot 6, I recommend you to RMA the board as slot 6 seems to be spoilt.

  • [865PE/G Neo2 Series] DDR Memory with 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum

SYSTEM SPEC: 400w PSU, Pentium 4 3.2ghz 800mhz FSB (HT), Matrox Parhelia 128 8x AGP card, MSI Neo2 PFS Platinum motherboard.
Hi there. Im looking for some serious help with my computer. I have a MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum mobo and have been using 512mb DDR RAM with it- the ram is PC2700 (333mhz), non-ECC, ubuffered, non-parity, 184 pin. Now, I have just purchased a new DIMM. This one is
    1gb PC3200 (400mhz), non-ECC, Unbuffered, non-parity, HIGH DENSITY- DUAL IN LINE, 128 x 64, 184 pin
It doesnt work and my system refuses to boot up. I checked out the specs of the 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum, and it says in the table that you can only use 400mhz DDR RAM with an 800mhz FSB processor (which I have). It says it supports 400mhz RAM, "DUAL CHANNEL", non-ECC, unbuffered memory, but no mention of "HIGH DENSITY" or "DUAL IN LINE". Is there a difference between "DUAL CHANNEL" and "DUAL IN-LINE". Also, does anyone know what the difference is between 128 x 4 and 128 x 64, they are both 1gb? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have seen some RAM from the same dealer which is not "HIGH DENSITY" and has the 128 x 4 configuration, and is still a 1gb module. Is that safe to buy? What RAM do I need (in detail) for my motherboard. Thanks!

Always useful with a complete systemspec.including PSU and biosversion, so please make one.
Can´t see anything wrong with the basic RAM specification - it also matches the MoBo basic specifications:
    - Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5V DDR SDRAM.
    - Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC.
    - Supports Dual channel DDR266/333/400/433/466/500/533 MHz and up.
Have you tried removing the old RAM and booting only with the new 1GB stick alone ?
Using mixed RAM, sometimes works in "Single mode" (see mobo manual), but is not recommended.
Running Dual-channel ( 2x512 or 1024x2 ) is preferable and gives best performance, but then you need two identical sticks.
You may also need to increase RAM voltage some in bios (example 2.7v) to achieve best stability.
If you have some RAM compability issues with 1GB sticks - 2x512 RAM stick would be safer and give better performance, unless your aiming for more then 2GB in total.
    You can also read about the RAM testreport here;
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/6728v2.0/memory.pdf
About "Dual In line Memory Module" - I think it´s the long version for older DIMM description.
Just like "Double Data Rate" is the long version for DDR RAM.
DDR means Double Data Rate RAM (in opposition to the SDRAM or Single Data Rate). DDR RAM bends the transfer rate for clock cycle. It can go quicker because it executes 2 instructions for cycle of clock of the RAM instead of an only instruction like it is the case of the SDR.

  • Memory on Msi x48c platinum

So far i must say "Worst motherboard ever" !
I had problem with my cpu E8500 due to bios update and now even memory also.
I have this computer all new parts
    Msi x48c Platinum
    Radeon 4870 1 gb ram

    Samsung f1 Hdd 1 TB
    Corsair 2 x 1 gb ram 1600 mhz DDR3
    Chill 700w psu
    Windows xp pro
When i switch my memory to something above 1067 mhz then windows freeze right after the welcome screen.
What is wrong here..because i am sure this motherbord promised 1600 mhz suport ddr 3

    Okay, about your memory:
    http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/TW3X2G1600C9DHX.pdf
    These are the "true"/non-overclocked specifications:
    Quote
    SPD programmed at:
 JEDEC standard 9-9-9-24 values at
    1333MHz
...and these are the overclocking specifications:
    Quote
Tested together at 1600MHz, Vdimm =
1.80V, at latency settings of 9-9-9-24
Also note, that Corsair does not mention any test condition for stably overclocking and overvolting the memory modules from DDR3-1333 to DDR3-1600 @1.8V.  Instead it says this at the bottom:
    Quote
Every part is tested in Corsair's factory at 1600MHz, but your actual results may vary depending on the overclocking margin of your CPU and motherboard.
Corsair does not (cannot) promise you that you will be able to reach the clock speeds that were tested in the laboratory.  You should keep that in mind at all times before you proceed.  Also, note that these memory modules are not on the MSI Test List for this mainboard:
    http://global.msi.eu/uploads/test_report/TR10_1393.pdf
Now, as you have already found out yourself, you need to raise FSB Clock Speed in order to reach memory clock speeds higher than 666 MHz (DDR3-1333) as the highest possible FSB/DRAM Ratio is 1:2.  That means in theory , the FSB Clock has to be raised to 400 MHz in order to enforce DDR3-1600 on the memory clock using the 1:2 ratio.  I am not saying that this is a totally impossible thing to do, but it is definately not an easy one.
What you should not do, is to try to overclock FSB/CPU & memory at the same time.  Rather, you should lower the memory clock speed (for now!).  The best thing is to get the system stable @400 MHz FSB Clock Speed and worry about overclocking the memory modules later.
In order to do that, please set your FSB/DRAM Ratio to 1:1.2 in BIOS, disable Spread Spectrum, lower the memory voltage to 1.6V and then raise the FSB Clock Speed in small steps.  Test stability after each step and see if you can get the system stable 400 MHz FSB Clock Speed without changing anything else (for now).
With FSB/DRAM Ratio set to 1:1.2, your memory will operate @DDR3-960 MHz and should not be a critical factor in system stability.  Once your system is stable @400 MHz FSB, you can start to overclock the memory (knowing that FSB & CPU themselves are fine with the overclock).  Then you can concentrate on the memory only and see how far you can get.
[I am moving this thread to the Overclocking Corner for further discussion.]

  • Best DDR Module for MSI K7N2/K7N2G mobos...help

    Hi,
i am thinking in buying new DDR modules for my PC, and not generic ones, i mean high performance, low latency, ready to overclock modules. And i was thinking in buying PC3200 or PC3500 modules.
So, could you share your experience with me about high performance (CL2) DDR modules out there and the MSI K7N2/K7N2G mobos.
    Feel free to post.
    Bye.

getting quality memory is a must with these new power hungry boards.
I use both Mushkin 3200 Black low latency 2x512 in 2 machines.
I also use 2x 512 XMS Corsair 3200LL and they are equal but I favor mushkin for absolutly no problems, stable, fast.
With anything you get what you pay for.

  • Need help with Dual Channel DDR memory

Hi, I have a msi nvidia MOBO, K7N2G and it supports dual channel memory. The manual says to put one in 1 and one in 3. I did then it wont start. System gives the old beep.........beep.........beep. I have to patriot 512 ddr sticks. They work fine in slot 1 and 2 but not in "dual channel" mode. Do i have to do anything else in order to get these to work?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    hi
    try slot 2&3.
    what brand of memory?
what speed is the memory working in?
there is no option to disable or enable dual channel.
just put them in slot 1&3 or 2&3.
    bye

  • [Intel] Mixing different size and brands of memory. MSI 6507 Motherboard.

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it is ok to mix, firstly different size ram and secondly - different brands. I am currently using a 1x PC2100 512mb stick and 1x PC2100 256mb stick (Different Brands) and have never had any problems. However I am looking to replace the 256 stick with either another 512 or 1g, when searching on the net most of the advice is not to mix brands and always use pairs rather than different size sticks?
    I have a MSI 6507 MB
    Thanks

    Hi
Using matched pairs is still the best way to go with memory but that doesn't mean that having different brands won't work.  It is a crap shoot when mixing different sticks of memory.  Sometimes it works fine but most of the time it causes problems.
