De-branding a Lumia 800

while travelling on business I got an unlocked Lumia 800. While it was easy enough to get set up in English it's still (in the About) referencing Carrier: Norway SW VariantID 539 v.02
Now while I've got nothing against the fine people of Norway (Oslo is an awesome city) because I am heading back to the US in a couple of weeks I'd love to know if being identified as a Norwegian handset will be a problem for updates and features (eg if they don't get tethering but an un-branded or US device does will I get left out)?

As long as your phone doesn't show up a provider logo... I don't think it is considered "branded".
You seem to be looking at a "country neutral" telephone ?

  • Lumia 800 Camera wont open

    Hi the camera function in my brand new Lumia 800 wont open. This is both from trying to use the on screen button and side of phone button. I have tried changing the camera settings but this has not helped? Any suggestions please? Thanks

    @jtsticks
    As a pre-cursor to returning your device can only suggest that you perform the hardware reset press the Power key and hold it for 10 seconds, when screen turns black press the Power key to turn on the phone; After that the software / operating system (OS) reset returns the phone to its out-of-the-box state by Tap Settings > About > reset your phone - default Nokia lock code of 12345 unless altered by user (Note: that this procedure erases all consumer data!)

  • Lumia 800 Freezes Again

    Hi,
    My lumia 800 froze again.
    On it's exact 2th month I brought my phone to Nokia Care for screen freeze issue, got it back after a week 20th July. I ask the one who handed me as to what fix they have applied, she said they have bring it to head office and changed its motherboard?..For 2 weeks it worked fine as brand new so my frustration was bit lifted.
    Saturday last week 5th of August I updated my phone to:
    OS version: 7.10.8773.98
    Firmware: 1750.0805.8773.12220
    For a week it worked fine, just today it freezes again. I was listening to MP3 music with headset on while reading mails then a FB message push notification appears so I go over it by tapping on the notification. It directed me to messaging app read the message and replied. I stayed on the app waiting for the reply then BOOM!!..screen freeze.
    Before the screen freeze I set my Wifi on gone to Marketplace and download the app updates and been switching between apps.
    Before update to 8773 I was on 8107 OS version. With 8107 I am doing above routine with no problem or screen freeze.
    Additional details on my phone:
    Hardware revision # : 112.1402.2.4
    Radio software ver. : 1.7.50.08
    Radio hardware ver. : 8225
    Bootloader version : 7.41.0.0
    Chip SOC ver. : 0.74.2.1

  • Should I keep Lumia 800?

    Hi have just taken delivery of Lumia 800. Probably should have looked at forum before ordering. I appreciate forums are largely used by people with issues, but I have been shocked by problems with phone and some of its limitations eg can't direct synch outlook tasks - I don't have ability to use exchnage server and was motivation for buying a windows phone rather than iphone(assumed there would be no issue). Question is should I keep phone or return under 7 day cool off. Thanks for your thoughts.

    Sadly Nokia has again failed to listen to it's customers, the whole battery issue has been declared -solved- although sadly it is nowhere near solved. The battery longevity varies hugely from day to day, one day it will sit on standby for 18 hours the next it will die after 6 hours (this happened to me yesterday from full charge to flat in 6 hours standby)
    It had/has the potential to be a great phone but the battery issues plague it, if you have not already bought one then, as a loyal Nokia customer since they first started selling mobile phones for general use, I'd steer well clear of it until they either fix it or replace the model with something that does the job it was designed for.
    The Lumia 800 has been all said and done the most complete and utter dissapointment Nokia could have put to market. It  was clearly rushed to production and sale without first making sure it was up to the job.  The only thing Nokia can do now is put it's hands up and admit to it's customers that there is and always has been a battery issue, it has not been resolved, make efforts to get the issue rectified as soon as possible and hope some of them will stay 'brand loyal'. I have tried to remain positive throughout but it is now very hard to remain upbeat when I have a phone which I cannot use for any time for fear of being caught without power and cannot enjoy the features of unless it is plugged in and charging (note plugged in with the Lumia does not always mean charging) this defeats the word mobile and provides me with a very expensive electricity consuming landline

  • Nokia Lumia 800 2nd. device dies!!

    Hi!
    Today I'd like to let you know that this is the second time that my Nokia Lumia 800 dies.
    Second tieme? Yes, it is second time!!! Only to a Nokia it could happen!!!
    I'm really angry towards this formerly "prestigious" brand. They launch to market a Chinese product at an European price!!!!! That's it!!! A product that isn't able to be switched on longer than a week.
    Two months ago my Nokia Lumia 800 died by first time. El Corte Inglés Nokia SAT (Madrid, Spain) sent it to repair; and supposedly, according Nokia technician words, Nokia SAT changed everything except for external case. Even all data in device were lost, I received it as new.
    Let's say a pray for it, today Nokia brand passed away for me!!!!!

    Hi Ceroberts75!!
    Thanks for your replay, but it isn’t necessary you stand Nokia brand in this way. Always, in all human organizations there are lot people that suck up and scrounge around companies to beg for a fistful of scraps and they’re happy with them!!!!
    You, see? In the Spanish forum my post has been deleted! Is this freedom of speech? No, it’s censure!!!
    If you spent almost 500 euro for a device that supposedly is stand by one prestigious company as Nokia was; wouldn’t you expect that once after repairing device, this dvice shouldn’t have the same problem? So, I would!
    NOKIA isn’t the same as it was since they started to manufacturing in China.
    If you look at Nokia financial results, losses reached 150 M. € the first trimester 2013. Why? It’s clear!!
    1st Because their sales were much less than expected and their investments were much higher.
    2nd Because their products aren’t supported by customers as long ago due to the hip of problems that new OS causes.
    Finally, this rant is for advising those that they aren’t aware about this problem and this brand.

    Hello All,
    I've just updated my Lumia 800 to Tango. I now see the Internet sharing option. I can switch it on, other clients can see and connect to the WiFi hotspot.
    I tried to tether my Windows 7 laptop to the phone, but no luck - I cannot actually use the tethered connection to browse the Internet.
    I don't have any restrictions on my Internet usage plan.I can confirm this because with the same data plan (and SIM), my E6 (with Joiku hotspot) can share its Internet connection without any hassles.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Disable Wi-Fi on the Lumia so it only has a Mobile data connection.
    Disable Wi-Fi access on the laptop
    Enable Internet sharing on the Lumia
    Enable Wi-Fi access on the laptop then find and connect to the Lumia access point.
    If you do not get internet access on the laptop please send me a personal mail with the following data:
    Phone carrier and country
    Laptop brand and model
    Used operating system (including any service packs!)
    The speed of the connection from Wireless Network Connection Status on the PC

  • Serious camera problems with the Lumia 800

    Hello everyone, I just want to share my experience with you.
    I've been using an unlocked Lumia 800 for a week now and I actually like the phone, however these camera problems are just unacceptable.
    The camera has SERIOUS white balance problems, and, for me the most important, the auto-focus is just ridiculous. It works bad, but focusing on "macro" objects is just a no go, even usin the touch focus or the "macro" focus mode. Another problem is the lens flare, which reflects how bad these optics might be. You really think that the Carl Zeiss branded optics anything here? Think again. My HTC Incredible S, with its "OEM" optics, (or the Iphone 4S or the SII) just humiliates this camera. Also, is that so hard to make a green square focus confirmarion?
    How can they release a flagship device, with this price range, with these problems? No wonder why Nokia is where it is standing now, "almost" in a closing-doors status. They really need better engineers and programmers because everytime they let this happen with a device, they're tossing away their valuable customers. And they really deserve it.
    And as I've been reading, the Lumia 900 is having the same problems... How sad is this?
    Regards,
    RR
    Moderator's note; removed personal remarks

    No, the camera is not that bad, it is actually decent in lowlight conditions @ISO100 (it automatically raises a bit, but it avoids the 800, unlike the auto-mode), with a good balance between noise and detail. However, In my opinion, that's the whole purpose in camera phones - point and shoot. If I could only take good photos if I find the perfect combination of settings for each situation, the versatility of camera phones would be zero. And of course, if I want "perfect" photos, I'll use my DSLR, but that's not an excuse for this camera, which performs worse that my previous E72.
    And understand light and ff course this camera can take amazing photos, as those in flickr, but all cameras can do that. Some do need lots of effort and tries, some not. Even my old Sony Ericsson C902, which was **bleep**, could sometimes take some nice pics.
    I'm not complaining about the full set of caracteristics, but about the details that ruin the whole.
    - Lack of self-time;
    - Metering is also inaccurate. Lots of clipped highlights;
    - White balance is a mess with flash and indoors (incandescent or fluorescent lights);
    - Lateral lens flare, which is bad and I'll upload an example soon.
    - I believe the whole auto-focus is a bit inaccurate, but I can only really notice it in macro captures. This really incapacitates me of taking detailed document photos, which I usually do.
    Overall, I'm really enjoying the phone experience, but the camera fails to impress mainly due to the lack of effort by the Nokia Developers to tweak the camera driver properly, which is pitiful.
    Here's an example of a screen capture, at 15cm (any other phones I know can sharp-focus at this distance): notice the off-focus/blurred center, the whole image soft-focus, and those stained areas. Weird!

  • Lumia 800 Telekom: SIM-PIN ist _not_ requested whe...

    Hi,
    I have a serious problem with my Lumia 800, Telekom/T-Mobile Germany Branding. When I turn the device on, there is no prompt to enter my SIM-PIN. The consequence: I am not able to connect to my mobile phone provider unless I pretend to do a real call, then the phone requests my pin. However I want to be available for calls right from the start!
    Has anyone experienced this problem, too? Any workarounds?
    Thanks,
    saardunu

    Are you using a new micro SIM card, or a standard size SIM card that has been cut down to a micro SIM size by the operator/carrier?
    I just tried activating SIM PIN request on a Lumia 800, using a brand new micro SIM and this worked as is should when the phone was started.
    so if your SIM card used to be a standard size SIM, I would suggest you contact the operator/carrier and ask them to send you a new micro SIM. This could be the cause of the problem

  • Is the Lumia 800 a step backwards for nokia?

    Having now owned a lumia 800 for a few days, I have found imo that this phone feels like a step back to some of the older nokias when it comes to the basic features of the phone. Don't get me wrong some of the new features are ok, but when it comes to selecting a ring tone, or customisation of what icons you see on your screen, connecting to other devices to send files etc. have they put enough thought into what this so called advanced phone should be like or have they just put the hardware together and said sod it there you go microsoft do what you want with the software and forget about anything we have done before? I would love to hear what other users of this phone think.

    @iceytoa1. Since you are bringing cars into this, I will use it to explain my point. Most modern up-to-date mobile phones have a very simple basic function built in that is designed to protect car drivers when they have their hands free kits set up in their car , Auto Answer. The Iphone you have to purchase an app to do this, And now Nokia have not included this basic function in the lumia 800. Would you want to pay extra on a brand new car, just to have indicators? I have no problem with Nokia wanting to try and increase sales, but when it means they are forgetting about everything they have done with the previous models and the basic functions that the all had, then something is very wrong. Either they don't give a monkeys about all the loyal customers they have gained over the years, or they have sold out to microsoft already.
    @neie35c. I 2 wanted the N9. When I spoke to nokia about getting one they said to me the lumia 800 was virtually the same just had windows on it. I am now stuck with the lumia for the term of my contract, unless the thing breaks and then I can send it back and get a decent phone.

  • Nokia Lumia 800 bricked

    Hi All,
    I have had a (relatively!) trouble-free Lumia 800 for the last 10 months or so. It is on Vodafone UK, and runs the latest software updates.
    Today, I had it plugged into the laptop at work and had just removed Facebook as an account (I have been trying to get my message updates to work), and whilst it was plugged into the laptop via USB I performed a full turn-off by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.
    However, it now will not turn on at all, no matter what I do to it. It was pretty much fully charged when this happened, and here is the list of things I have tried:
    Left it plugged into the laptop for more than 2 hours;
    Warmed the phone up by leaving it in (hot!) direct sunlight;
    Held down the power button for about a minute both plugged in and unplugged;
    Held down Volume-Down, Power and Camera buttons both plugged in and unplugged;
    Plugged it into a laptop and stand-along charger;
    Done pretty much all of the above whilst removing and replacing SIM card etc.
    However, all the above do absolutely nothing at all, and the phone is well and truely completely bricked. I am really struggling with this - is there anything anyone can suggest? Is there some sort of complete reload/reboot that I can try?
    Thanks in advance,
    Neil

    Sadly all brands have troubles, know people that have had far worse reliability with HTC's and Samsungs recently. Personally amongst my family, friends and colleagues not one of us has had a serious issue with any of our 10+ Lumias, luck of the draw. The only one we had a little bit of trouble was my sisters branded 710 but it started to behave after a hard reset. I personally had trouble with an 800 back in October but it wasn't mine and wasn't running release firmware.
    Personally I always have a spare phone, either at home or work in case mine lets me down, fortunately i've not had to touch it whist using the Lumia 800 & 900.
    If the charger thing doesn't work then sadly you'll either have to send it off or claim for it on any insurance policies you may have. There is nothing further that can be done on this forum to help.

  • MMS Picture settings etc Lumia 800

    Hi All,
    Lumia 800, I have got the internet working on it fine through APN but I cannot find anywhere the MMS settings to receive picture messages or send them.
    Everytime I send a picture message I get a message saying cannot send or if someone sends me a picture message, I get a little message saying view content - I click it and nothing happens.
    I hate this phone so much, Why have a phone if you cannot even use it for what's suppose to do?!
    Never buying a Nokia again hate them so much!
    If anybody could please help me that would be great

    Ran the tool, selected Virgin as the Operator
    Pressed the "+" at the bottom to select "add apn"
    Entered the following details
    Connection name: Virgin2
    Under Internet APN, Access point name: goto.virginmobile.uk
    Proxy address: 193.30.166.4
    Proxy port: 8080

    MMSC address: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
    Save
    Select Virgin2 as settings option
    I still found it was not working and upon ringing Virgin they told me my SIM was not yet MMS enabled. To do this, they told me to send a picture to myself. You will only need to do this if your SIM is brand new and you have never sent a picture message before from this number.

  • Poor battery Nokia Lumia 800

    According to Nokia I now have the latest update with 1600.2483.8107.11501.
    With what I call "normal use" the battery lasts 16 hrs.
    If I do everything that Nokia tells to safe battery it lasts 20 hrs.
    Still I am very disappointed because you dont every they even have possibility to charge.
    Nokia will dont even tell me abt how many hrs the battery should last with what I call "Normal use".
    What I am thinking it should last at least 3-4 days to be a phone I will keep.
    Today Nokia told me that in abt 2 weeks they will come out with a new update to improve battery time.
    I think Windows Phone is very inportant for Nokias future and if I was in charge there I should do everything to improve battery time more and do it quick, if only a couple of hrs improvement dont alter anything.
    Any new comments on this ?
    notbat

    I agree this could have and should have been a great phone but it's battery has plagued it and the lenght of time customers have had to wait for a magic 'fix' that just didn't work is poor.
    Notsat - You say a new update is due in about 2 weeks? I am hoping this is the case and that it in fact does do 'something' or even anything because the last one did nothing for me in fact I'm certain it made matters worse.
    The greatest annoyance is not only is the battery life very poor it is also extremely unreliable, one day 18 hours may be realised but a few days later 6 hours on standby is all you get? This is a ridiculous jump in reliability, I can;t leave the house without wondering if it's an 18 hour day or a 6 hour one!
    From perusing the internet and talking with friends who have also bought the Lumia 800 Nokia is at serious risk of losing a lot of their customers over this continued issue.  I for one am now at the point of looking at alternatives and I have personally bought Nokia's from the day dot, I always liked their design, usability and their PC interface (which Zune falls way short of but I realise this is Microsoft software not Nokia).  It's funny how you can end up loyal to a brand though knowing how they work and familiarity but Lumia has tested my loyalty to the maximum.  I have had issues with other Nokia models I've owned but I have managed to see past them.  But this issue makes my Nokia a landline because I can't use it without it being plugged in for fear it will die on me when I most need it.

  • Clock runs slow - Lumia 800

    I have a bizarre problem with my Lumia 800 - the clock runs slow! I have had to set the clock multiple times since I got it (3 months ago), and within about a week of setting it each time the clock is several minutes behind time.
     I've noticed that unlike on a lot of other phones, there is no 'sync time automatically'.
    For the record my phone was purchased through Virgin (Optus network), and I haven't made any modifications to it whatsoever. I have updated it with the latest firmware, however the problem has persisted since I first got the phone.

    @DarkX
    You don't say whether your Lumia 800 is network branded or not and if provider does not support "network time" this feature may be absent.
    There are also problems in the way the phone gets the time which is probably using NITZ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NITZ) so device may easily be 3 - 4 minutes off satellite time.

  • Multiple email accounts on Lumia 800

    Dear All
    I have a question about email accounts on the Lumia 800.
    I have two email accounts, one linked to our website (pop 3) and also my personal Live account.  The account linked to the website can only receive (it costs more and thus was deemed unnecessary). This system has worked well in the past, just reply or forward using my Live account.  This has worked on my pc, laptop, Iphone etc.
    Now the question, how do I choose which account sends on the Lumia?  As I can’t seem to select between the two, I currently have no means of replying to or forwarding mail received in the ‘website’ account.   I have tried messing around with settings in both accounts, but to no avail.
    Apologies in advance if I’m just being an idiot but any help would be appreciated.

  • Nokia Lumia 800, Depleted battery Won't start up.

    Hi,  After being away for home for 5 days with no charger for my Nokia lumia 800, I foolishly allowed it to run out of battery, Unaware of the problems this can cause due faulty hardware, thanks to Nokia I returned home and plugged the phone into charge. I have allowed my Phone to run out of battery many times before in the past as you wouldn't expect any problem to come of it. After many hours of the phone being on charge I went to turn it on, it vibrated and came up with the phone providers image then no further, it stayed on this image for hours until I held down the power button and  it would turn itself off. Not being to worried at this point I went online to the many chatrooms, helpline, youtube videos you name it to source a solution. Having tried absolutely everything, about 10 times nothing has worked to multiple button combinations, heating the phone up, plugging into PC with zune - everything. Now slightly worried as I really do want this phone to work and not have to buy a new one at a great cost.  This is not a problem I have cause, it's a problem with Nokia, and the manufacturing of the phone, So if no one on  here will be able to aid me in fixing the phone, once I return to the UK I shall take it into a Nokia store to get it looked at, which i won't be happy to do as many of the Nokia outlets are in unconventional locations such as Glasgow.
    Thank in advance for any Help which is much appreciated,
