De-cluttering the Clutter

Verizon, along with other wireless company's go out of their way to ensure to a 'would-be' customer, that they have the best coverage in the United States. Verizon in my opinion is at the top of this list. The "clutter" as I'll call it, you know what I'm referring to, the nice big map as you walk into the Verizon store showing the U.S.painted in red indicating all the nice coverage overlaps, needs de-cluttering. It's a visual distractor, a lure, inaccurate technical fluff or quite honestly a visual 'false' advertisement. It's the side by side picture of a person who lost 100 lbs in 2 days using the sprout diet (okay, i'm being dramatic here, but you get my point...it's sleight of hand advertising). Case in point, I own a 3G device, my wife and daughter own 4G devices. I have a tower (data below) approximately 2-miles from my house. None...that's right...none of our cells receive signal, not a single bar unless I stand in the corner of my house with one hand on my head the other rubbing my belly singing the "YMCA"! It's a joke! They sell you a service plan that isn't. Mind you, when I look at my area map, It shows full coverage (like i'm living in a constant thunderstorm, its red over my house-see image below and attachment for my specific location). My neighbor has the same issue, however he's with AT&T. The theory of RF isn't the issue, it is what it is. It's either there or not and in both our cases, it's not. The solution to the issue is an extender. Approaches to the issue is the issue!  For example, the fix for him was asking for a wireless extender, a tower in the home if you will. See he approached AT&T with the issue and they provided "AT NO COST" an extender. They acknowledge the lack of coverage. In my case, Verizon says it's not their fault, I was informed of this today when trying to find a solution to the problem. Both the tech and the store rep in Canton, treated the issue as if, well to bad, here's our version of the fix, it's going to cost you more money. When I broached the issue of an extender, I was told I would have to purchase one at the fair cost of $239 USD. "Fair cost"? So, I have to purchase another piece of equipment just so the equipment I previously purchased can work. Are you telling me 'YOUR' service is that bad that attitional equipment is warranted.  But what about the map that indicates unobstructed and reliable signal in my area, what about that tower that's owned by Verizon only 2 miles from my house? Why is Verizon nickel and diming everyone from equipment charges to over-redundant charges to our billing statements? Isn't this a breach of contract, I don't remember reading anything about the additional purchase of equipment in order to get base line service! In the end, it's the customer that drives the market, its the customer that makes or breaks a business. I'll honor my contract because it's the honorable and right thing to do, but when it's up, I'll be taking my business elsewhere, at least to an honest organization that doesn't make excuses for its service issues and one that puts the customer and his/her suggestions front and center, and certainly one that doesn't "sell" my data to others to include the very gov't I worked for. Organizations that find solutions and fixes to and or around a problem need commending, unfortunately in my view, Verizon doesn't deserve such action because they haven't earned it.

Unobstructed? Not sure where you got that word from but Verizon Wireless's customer agreement actually has quite the opposite:
Where and How Does Verizon Wireless Service Work?
Wireless devices use radio transmissions, so unfortunately you can't get Service if your device isn't in range of a transmission signal. And please be aware that even within your Coverage Area, many things can affect the availability and quality of your Service, including network capacity, your device, terrain, buildings, foliage and weather.

  • Importing from external hard-drive without all the clutter

greetings...i need to import my saved iphoto library from my external hard-drive back to my new computer's iphoto library...how can i best do this without bringing along all the clutter (copies or originals i don't want)...i dropped my entire saved library into my computer's library but ended up with thousands of versions i do not want (i just want the versions i last had-complete with typed information or labeling)...certainly one doesnt' have to go through the whole imported library and delete all the copies and originals they no longer want (that would take a week!)
    thanks,
here's what i see on my external hard-drive:
    (what should i drag over?)
    AlbumData.xml
    Data (Folder)
    Dir.data
    iPhoto.ipspot
    iPhotoLock.data
    iPod Photo Cache (Folder)
    Library.data
    Library.iPhoto
    Library6.iPhoto
    Modified (Folder)
    Originals (Folder)
    Thumb32Segment.data
    Thumb64Segment.data
    ThumbJPGSegment.data

    (what should i drag over?)
All of it, as a unit.
To restore an iPhoto Library drag the iPhoto Library Folder to the Pictures Folder and start iPhoto. There's no importing involved.
All of the "clutter" is necessary for running iPhoto. If you don't want it, use a different app.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

The text editor is the text area that you use on the webmail (Yahoo, Hotmail) website to create a new mail.
You can compare that with the ''Post new message'' text area that you use to create a new post on this forum.
Just above the text area that you use to enter the message text there is usually a button bar with buttons that allows some text formatting like Bold and Italic and can also include a button to make a clickable hyperlink.
Check the tooltip of each button by hovering with the mouse over each button.

  • I want to remove buttons in favour of a Windows menu equivalent, how do I control the software without cluttering the GUI?

My Graphical User Interface is fairly full of controls & buttons, removing the buttons should simplify and improve the appearance of the GUI. I would like to capture all of the menu selections and drive the software without relying on offscreen buttons etc. Is there a standard technique? I have started to look at queue, notifiers, occurences etc but I havent seen anything yet that looks obvious for the application.
    Help appreciated.

You want to replace front panel controls with a custom menu? If that's true, then the code to do that is similar to the best way to handle the original controls. The event structure has both menu selection (User) and Menu Selection (App). As the shipping example Menu Selection with Events shows, you get the ItemTag and MenuRef from which you get the menu's item name which can be connected to a case structure. Since the menu name is a string, it also works well in a queue based state machine.

  • Reducing the clutter of .mac .me and .icloud?

In the cloud i can reduce the send choices.  (under prefferences - composing I can remove names as choices in the "from" menu).   But in Mail in OS X there is no way to reduce what are your choices in the from field.  HELP.  With two accounts and two aliases and having been a member since .mac I have a crazy number of choices.
As an aside I try to never used my "real email" to prevent someone from gaining access to my user id.  Instead they only see the alias.

  • Cleaning the clutter- boot drive

    Quick background:
    Quad 2.66 mac pro
74 GB Raptor 10k startup disk
Im having a big issue getting my boot drive cleaned out. Obviously having a raptor boot drive being too full will negate any speed advantages. Im not sure how it got so much stuff on it as I only use it for applications and of course OSX (up to date).
My problem is even after going through the disk with a fine tooth and using programs like WhatSize (to see where files lay and how much space they take up) im still coming up way short on space saved. What im completely perplexed on is that when using programs like WhatSize, and as well with finder I can only account for about 19. 5 GB being used on the disk!
I have a full range of pro apps from Apple and Adobe installed, but then again they are accounted for in the above mentioned 19.5 GB of files. I don’t have big garage band instrument libraries or a large apple loops library also.
+I posted pictures of my finder window, whatsize window, and boot disk reading.+

Please help me find these ghost files or figure out how to clean off my boot drive short of a reformat.
Thank you so much in advance!

    Try typing into Terminal…
    sudo du -h -d 1 /
… and then enter your administrator password when requested. Be sure to unmount all other drives as they will add themselves to the totals in the /Volumes directory. You should get something like this…

  • What is the point of Mission Control?

I have been a Mac user since 1987, when I got my first SE/30.  I understand a LOT about the Mac OS, and I consider myself and expert. For the life of me, however, I cannot figure out the point of Mission Control (or Exposé or Spaces, for that matter).  Let me explain, and ask if anyone here can clear this up for me.
As I understand it, the point of Mission Control is to make it easy to access various open applications in an uncluttered workspace/desktop.  If this is the case, then how is this better than, say, Quickeys, which I have used forever?
In other words, I typically use the following applications, all open at the same time: Word, Mail, Safari, my office accounting program, iTunes, iChat, and maybe one or two more.  I use Quickeys and have assigned a keyboard shortcut for each - for example, control-E for mail; control-s for Safari; control-W for Word, etc.  It is second nature for me to immediately go to, say, Mail by pressing control-E.  Bringing the app to the front is literally instantaneous.
I "get it" that, say, Safari can show below Mail, or iTunes can show behind Word, but that (multiple windows partially overlappiong each other) has never bothered me - indeed, I've never even considered it something worthy of worry.
Thus, my question is, how does Mission Control do this - navigation of open applications - better than Quickeys? Is it simply and only to avoid the "behind the window clutter"?  If so, is the contortion needed to activate Mission Control - removing fingers from keyboard, clicking mouse, navigating mouse to proper desktop, and returning keys to keyboard - worth it? If so, how?  There has to be something else to this Mission Control that I am just missing.
Could one of you enlighten me?
    Thanks!

Different people have different ways of working and long ago I discovered the joys of virtual desktops (think mission control). Since System 7 (when the multi-finder stopped being optional) I've been keeping lots of programs open at the same time. The problem with that is the desktop gets very cluttered very fast and getting to the right window of the right program can be challenging. Thankfully between 3rd party tools and Apple's own built in tools we have many ways of dealing with this. Mission Control (virtual desktops) is one of them.
I have assigned related programs to a single desktop. I have the Programming Desktop where the terminal, BBedit, Racket, and Xcode tools live. I have the Writing Desktop where Pages, Word, and InDesign live. And so on. This cuts down on the clutter of my display since only a couple programs appear on a single virtual desktop. Where Mission Control itself comes into play is when I need to get a resource from one Desktop to another. Say I'm writing an email and need to refer back to a document in Word. I might open the document in Word (which would move me into the Writing Desktop) then I'd shift to Mission Control and drag that Word document's window into my Internet Desktop so it would temporarily reside along with Mail so I could look at both the Word document and my email.
It isn't the only way to work but I've found it very convenient and indispensible on my notebook. On my work desktop where I have two displays my workflow is a little different since I have lots of REAL window space.

  • Any way to show a subvi's frontpanel within its parent with out the cumbersome "subpanel"?

I'm writing an application, where several loops are running in parallel (e. g. read sensor data, receive UDP packets, send UDP packets, wait for input). Except for some configuration data, the loops are completely independent from each other (occasional communication is done via queues). Each of the loops will run indefinitely until told to stop by commands to a queue and is in its own subVI (otherwise the main blockdiagramm just containing the overall state machine would start to grow outside the screen, which is even worse than having to scroll in a text based language). Each of the subVIs also shows some information (status, sensor data, graphs, debugging).
So the big question is: how can I show all these subVIs information in a single window?
Using the "subpanel"-container is pretty much out of question. It adds almost as much clutter to the blockdiagram than the loops would do themselves (with "create vi reference", "insert vi", "run vi", "remove vi"; and that for every parallel subVI) and makes the code harder to maintain. Even worse, Labview is no longer able to tell me if one of the subVIs is currently broken (e. g. because there was a change in a typedef that requires changes in a subVI) until I run the complete program (or open each of the subVIs individually). Getting parameters into and out of the VIs isn't easy either that way (no more simple terminals).
I thought about making the subVIs' appearance titlebar-/menu-/borderless and floating and hardcoding a pixel position for all of them. But I can't really control what resolution the PCs running this program will have. So I fear they will be all over the place with no possibility for the user to move them around. This would also mean the main windows would always have to stick to the top left, which in itself would annoy users.
I remember having this problem already. My solution at this time was to make a copy of every frontpanelobject of the subVIs on the main VI (thereby cluttering the blockdiagram with heaps of unconnected terminals), creating a reference to that object, bundling them all together and writing it in a global variable. Then every subVI would pick out the references it needed and change the value with the value property node. Globals and changing the value per reference both being pretty bad Labview practice, it was still more manageable than dynamic calls to subVIs (which the subpanels comes to, although it shouldn't be needed). What making this approach not very practical this time, is, that some of the subVIs (and what they show) may be developed by other developers. This would mean for every frontpanel object they add/change/remove a reference needs to be added/changed/removed. While the reference list will be it's own cluster typedef, still all other subVIs will have to be updated, too.
Maybe I missed something. But is there really no simple option like "show frontpanel when loaded at this position within parent frontpanel"? Would make things soo much easier and way easier to maintain.

I'm sorry I'm not aware of any "cumbersome" subpanels - unless of course you don't know what you're doing. There is this wonderful invention called a "subVI" that can be used to organize and simplify your code, or are they too "cumbersome" as well? You should really learn a bit about what you are pontificating over before you start running off at the mouth.
    Mike...
I didn't want to step on your toes. No need to get personal.
Subpanels make some additional code necessary that hasn't got to do anything with the actual program. And I AM using subIVs as I wrote in my first post, which is exactly the root of the problem.
Nevertheless I now solved it in a way that comes close to what I wanted. I don't know if some of you meant your suggestions to be understood that way (at least I didn't ). The subVIs will now "insert" themselves (via invoke node) into a subpanel on the main vi, which they are given a reference of at call. This adds minimal aditional code, especially on the main VI which I want to keep as clean as possible. By clustering the panel reference into the parameters the subVIs are already given (not used in the example I attached below), there isn't even a change on the terminals of the subVIs.
I got to check now if this works well with event structures within the subVIs or if it can create the same problems like multiple event structures within a single VI.
So no global variables anymore and no writing values by property node. I don't know if this just wasn't possible in previous Labview versions I had a try at that (I guess it was 8.6 and/or 2009) or I just didn't come up with the idea back then.
And if the text wasn't that helpful, here are two screens:

  • What is the best way to handle input parameter

When writing sub-vi's, what is the best way to handle input parameter range checking? On the front panel I can choose to have numeric values coerced to be within range, but this does not affect constants or controls wired to the vi when used as a sub-vi. I can build range checking into the vi, but this can result in a cluttered looking vi. Do you have any suggestions.

As you discovered, the Range and Coercion properties of controls do not work when used in sub-vis.
Your best option is to go ahead and build your range checking into your sub-vis. If its something you will be doing a lot, just make your range checking a sub-vi and drop it where needed. This will keep the clutter to a minimum. You may end up with more than one range checking VI if you need different functionality, but this will still make less clutter and easier re-use.

Using the Abort button to stop your VI is like using a tree to stop your car. It works, but there may be consequences.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't like the interface of LR4?

I had really hoped that enough people complained about the interface design. Specifically the small dark fonts on a dark grey background. I find it nearly unusable. I just downloaded the trial of LR4 with hopes that they had addressed this issue. I guess they didn't get enough negative feedback. I really hate it. It seems that it wouldn't take that much in the way of coding to give us an option to change the font color.
This was one of the reasons I didn't upgrade to v3. I must say I'm really disappointed.

I happen to have a very large and calibrated top-of-the-line NEC display so that is not the issue — although it's brightness is set for accurate Color Proofing for Print.
I simply find the LR GUI a dark, cluttered and depressing environment in which to work (and an eye-straining one too!) and much prefer to work in the broad sunny uplands of Photoshop and Bridge-hosted ACR. (And that combination works extremely efficiently even for this photographer who may return from a Shoot with anywhere between four and eight thousand photographs!)
The ability to choose a lighter interface is essential in my case.
Panels which retracted into docks on the edges of the monitor would get rid of the clutter and provide a bigger working space and then the "develop" panels could open more widely when in use to allow for wider sliders.
Another thing about dark interfaces is that while they may be satisfactory for those who only prepare work for on-screen viewing, they are thoroughly unsuitable for those who prepare work for the Press or Printing in general.
Yet again, I have given another new version of LR (LR4) a fair testing and regret that, for the reasons stated here,  I still do not find it to be a program that I will be buying.

  • If..then..else statement in SQL with 'generalized' conditions in the if sta

it is possible to write something approaching an if..then..else statement in SQL with 'generalized' conditions in the if statement.
Attached is the query for the payment register, in which I've written a series of decode statements, one for each possible value of the payment code. The query works OK - however, its specific and as the number of paycodes expand (and they do), the report won't pick up the new paycode until the code is changed. More importantly, the report won't be correct until someone 'discovers' that a paycode is missing, which might take months.
If I were writing the equivalent of this series of decode statements in Focus, it would be something like this:
    DEFINE.......
    PAYMED/D12.2 = IF PAYMENT_CD LE 18
                   THEN PAYMENT_AMT
                   ELSE 0 ;

    DATE_OF_PAYMENT BETWEEN :START_DATE AND :END_DATE
    ORDER BY LOCATION_1, CPO_CHECK_NBR
As you can see, this is both much easier to write and covers the possibility of expansion of paycodes (expansions always fit in these defined ranges).
My question is, then, is it possible to write something like this in SQL and, if so, could you give me some sample code? (I'm one of those people who learn best from looking at the code as opposed to a set of instructions)

Here is one way you could do it.
Create a table that has columns like:
    Payment_code varchar2(2),
    Effective_Date Date,
    Payment_type varchar2(20),
    Expiration_Date Date)
Payment type for example could be
    I- indemnity
    M- medical
    R- recovery
    E- expenses
Let the table name for example be PAYMENT_CODE.
The select query would look like
    SELECT ACCOUNT_NAME,
    LOCATION_1,
    CLMNT_LAST_NAME,
    CLAIM_NBR,
    DATE_OF_INJURY,
    DATE_CHECK_REGISTER,
    PAYEE_NAME_1,

The idea is to group all the payment codes into a few groups to reduce the clutter. If there is ever a change to the payment code, you could modify the table and it will be reflected in your select query.

  • How do I disable the "de-emphasise tabs" feature in the new version of Firefox?

The new "tabs are visually de-emphasized" makes my tabs look all run together. Rather than reducing the clutter it makes it harder to distinguish what I've got open and what I don't have open.
For the moment I'm using an add-on that that changes the UI to look like Chrome so that I can see my tabs, but I'd like to find out how to switch this feature of the recent update.

I should clarify... I'm not trying to get Firefox to look like Chrome. I'm using an add-on that I found which does that as a work around for the problem (and yes, I know there is a subtle vertical line between the tabs... my point is that it's too subtle).
Is there perhaps an add-on that makes the tabs look like the prior version of Firefox's tabs? Again; I am NOT trying to make Firefox look like Chrome... I just want the tabs to be more visible.
This new feature seems pretty useless to my thinking, since it only emphasizes the tab you are on (and you presumably know which tab you're on since that's the page you're looking at) and runs all your other tabs together making it hard to distinguish between them (and the point of tabs is to be able to easily switch between them).
I tend to multitask and frequently have upwards of 20 tabs open at a time (in each browser that I'm using, usually two, sometimes 3 at a time). With a lot of tabs open the new look really gets messy fast, turning all the tabs into a single amalgam. I just want to be able to see my tabs again.

  • How can I change the background colour when working on a doc in full screen view (pages)?

Recently I have been working on docs without the distraction of having to see my desktop around my page file by using the full screen view in pages. I do find the contrast to an all black screen too harsh though and it makes my eyes more tired than seeing the clutter of my desktop around the page. Is there any way I can change the background colour?
    Any help much appreciated!

When you are in Full screen mode move the cursor up to the top to show the Format bar. Then look to the far right. There you'll see Background  and a rectangle. Click on the rectangle and change the colour.
