De-interlace before keying HDV footage?

I've got some HDV 1440x1080 greenscreen footage, PAL, Interlaced footage and i'm wondering if i should convert to a progressive scan/non compressed format (such as Animation, or maybe ProRes) before i start keying? Any ideas on good practice to enable me to get a better key from HDV footage?

My experience with keying HDV footage in PAL is that it is best to de-interlace beforehand.
Disclaimer: haven't done it in the new Motion yet, but I do it a lot in Shake, and the results are poor if I don't de-interlace first. The dreadful jagged edges and other artifacts rear their ugly heads.
Hope this helps a bit
Cheers

  • Mixing interlaced and progressive HDV footage?

Is anyone mixing interlaced and progressive footage on a FCP 5 timeline? Would you set the timeline up for progressive or interlaced settings? Would there be any loss in quality? I'm specifically wondering how well the true progressive of the JVC HD100 would combine with the "faux" progressive of the Canon A1.

I was hoping someone else would jump in with answers, because I am not familiar with either camera, and can't give you a definite answer, but I would hazard a guess that if you set both cameras to a 1/30th shutter, you would be able to mix the footage, but it would be very difficult to shoot, because it is such a slow shutter.
Other routes, would be converting the footage using compressors advanced formats conversion, and other tricks on the timeline, with removing fields and blending etc.
I think generally though, if you were going to intercut footage, you would notice it, at some level.
Some tests would help you enormously, as would renting a second camera identical to the first.
Good luck - post back with what worked and what didn't.

I'm trying to capture HDV footage shot on the Canon XHA1 and my FCP unexpectedly quits every time. I've used this type of footage and camera before with no issues.
I've trashed the preferences, tried setting the scratch disk to an external drive and on the hard drive.
I'm not sure what to try next?
    Do i have to re-install?

  • Trouble capturing HDV footage from Sony Z5U in FCE4 - any ideas?

I've shot about half an hour of HDV footage with the Sony Z5U. Have the computer at home connected to my Mac with a firewire. Tried with both firewires that I own. I've used a similar camera before to capture footage recently with no problems.
Gone through the Easy Setup in FCE4 and changed it to HD, HDV1080i60. In the camera, the VCR mode is set for HDV, the Video Out for Component says "1080i/480i", the down convert and DV wide convert are for letter box.
Any ideas on what the problem is? Do I just have 2 bad Firewire cables? or a bad port on my computer/camera?

Do you want to downconvert, or do you want to capture HD? Switch off downconvert. Switch off iLink.

  • Detecting bad frames in HDV footage

HI, i just installed the update, i was really looking forward to the bug fix to detect bad frames in HDV footage, this was the update to cs3 and cs4 had it to begin with -
    Improved handling of MPEG streams
The   Premiere Pro 3.2.0 update provides improved handling of MPEG files.   Errors in the MPEG stream can occur during recording due to tape   dropouts, record start/stop glitches, timecode breaks, and a variety of   other causes. Bad frames caused by these MPEG stream errors are now   better identified in 3.2.0 during file indexing and playback. Because   older MPEG index files and conformed audio files (those existing before   the 3.2.0 update) do not take advantage of the improved MPEG handling,   these files should be deleted to avoid compatibility issues.
am disapointed as this is what i have been looking forward to, i guess am still stuck with cs3.

    Hallo,
Ich denke ich bin hier richtig.
Frage inn Deutsch bitte um Hilfe.
    Adobe CS5. v.5.02
    PC  CPU- i7-930.
    P6X58Premium Asus Board.
    Win 7 Ultimat 64Bit
RoDo

  • Importing HDV Footage: System Hang After Indexing Finished

    Running Premiere CS6 with updates.
Generally solid application, but the first time I crashed it this year, was during import of HDV footage. After the footage indexes, and the thumbnail pic changes from 'media pending' to the actual footage frame, the mouse pointer freezes. The keyboard is frozen too. Can't even bring up the Task Manager in Windows 7 64. Is HDV even supported anymore? Maybe it's an invalid format? The file plays fine in VLC, so I don't think it's corrupted. But egads, I've never seen an app hang Windows 7 before!

I've confirmed that the hang does not happen with Canon HV20 footage, only Sony HVR-V1U footage. Any footage shot by that camera will hang not only Premiere, but the entire OS. I have to power down the machine to regain control.
What's so different about Sony's implementation of HDV that it is incompatible with Premiere?

  • Hdv footage?

anybody willing to share, or anybody know a place where I could get some hdv footage? I edit in premiere cs3, and I am thinkin about purchasing an hdv camcorder. I have heard a lot of good things, and a lot of bad things. Id like to try out editing native hdv within cs3 before I make the $1000+ investment. to see if I have any problems, how fast it is, etc. anybody willing to share?
    thanks!

  • Lines in QT HDV footage

With HDV footage why do I see artifacts and lines in my QT files but not in my AIC browser playback?  Which is giving me the real quality?  Is QT the actual digitized media playback?

    redpaw wrote:
Which is giving me the real quality?
Well, the correct answer is neither. If your footage is HDV shot in an interlaced format, such as 1080i60, your footage is designed to be played on an interlaced monitor, such as a CRT television. It will not look correct on a computer screen, which is not designed to display interlaced video. So you see the "lines" of the interlaced format when displayed on a computer screen.
The reason that it appears to look OK in Final Cut is that Final Cut, if the Viewer or Canvas is set to any other magnification than 100%, will supress one of the two interlaced fields that make up a frame and display only one of the fields. This removes the "lines" in the display of video (but not in the actual video it self). Here is an example - viewer set to display at 50% frame size:
And now, the same frame with the Viewer set to display 100% size:
So setting the Viewer or Canvas display to any other size than 100% surpresses this artifact (but has no effect on the video itself).
When you view the clip in Quicktime Player, you are seeing the "lines" because it is displaying both fields of the video regardless of the magnification setting:
So, in short, the only way you will see this interlaced video displayed correctly is when you view it on an interlaced monitor. You can do this if you have a Matrox, Aja or Blackmagic video output card or hardware box, or if you were to burn a DVD of your material, and then play the DVD on an interlaced monitor. Interlaced footage is designed to playback on interlaced monitors.
This is not a problem for you. Edit the footage, and then use Compressor to transcode the finished movie into the correct delivery form - web, DVD, etc.

  • Red flashing over my keyed video footage

I'm fairly new to AE, and I have had some problems after keying video footage.
I have keyed my footage as prescribed in the adobe tutorial that is available on this site, using Keylight 1.2. This has worked fine removed my blue background and the presenter looks really clean etc.
The problem that I have is that I have noticed once it has been rendered is that I am getting the image turn red a couple of times during the footage just for a split second. It also only changes the area red that I used the pen and rotobezier tool to mark round the image before I keyed it.
I know that the description of what is going wrong for me isn't the best, but if anyone has had anything similar or knows what I'm talking about then I could really so with some help to stop it from happening.
    Cheers
    Matt

Have you downloaded the Keylight updates from The Foundry wensite? There were a few bugs in the plugin that only got fixed after CS3 was released. You may also wish to pre-compose your masked layer to avoid the flickering. If this changes the result too much (as Keylight will respond to the missing areas that affect its formula), add a blue solid in the pre-comp thast matches the average key color.

  • Capture Sony FX1 HDV footage in FCP 5.0.4

    Hi,
Tomorrow we'll have to capture a lot of footage from a Sony FX1 HDV.
I have no experience with this camcorder.
What are the best capture settings in FCP ?
We want the native HDV footage.
    thanks

The best capture settings are those that match how you shot the footage.
If it is HDV1080i/60, then obviously you elect the capture preset.

  • Unable to Subclip HDV footage

I'm having trouble subclipping HDV footage. When I match frame the footage in the timeline the make subclip option is greyed out. Anybody have any idea why FCP is doing this? Thanks in advance
    Intel - FCP 6.0.4

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who was having the same problem as you. Although you say the camera playback is set properly, please recheck this. go into your camera's playback menu>menu>standard set>VCR HDV/DV. Unplug your firewire from the camera. Make sure camera is set to HDV NOT auto. replace firewire cable. Now open FCP. Go in Audio/video settings>A/V devices (farthest tab on right). In box for playback edit to tape different from video output (make sure it's checked) mirrored (checked) Video playback 1080i50, Audio HDV. I hope that works now.

  • Digitizing HDV footage with a Consumer Grade HD Camcorder

I have HDV footage on mini-digital tape. I need to digitize using Final Cut Pro. I shot the footage using a Sony HVR-V1U camera at 24p (an HDV camera and recorded onto mini-digital tape. I no longer have convenient access to the Sony HDV camera and was wondering if I can simply use a consumer grade high-definition camcorder to digitize the footage into my computer. If so, is there any quality degradation?

  • Error message when adding a filter to DV and HDV footage

    Hi,
I do not understand why I am getting an error message saying,
" The effect 'refraction, twirl, insect eye' failed to render: Your Hardware cannot render at the requested size and depth"
    Can some help me out?
I have a first generation Mac Pro 2..66 with 8gb of ram and the Ati radeon and Nvidia graffics card. This is a high end computer, why can't it render a video filter like refraction and son on?
I tried re-installing FCP and erasing those files in the preferences folder, but still not luck.
To make matters worse the render works on my MacBook Pro (1st gen.) and not on the Mac Pro quad core?
There must be something going on in my settings, is anybody else having this problem?
The footage I am working with are 2 formats, one is DV Ntsc shot with a DVX 100 and the other one I was working with HDV footage.
Why am I not able to render with the hardware power of this monster computer.
    Thanks for you help,
    Alessandro

  • Not possible with FCP6: HDV Footage and external TV (monitor) viewing ?

Hi all, I learned from another FCP6 forum when I'm working with HDV footage, FCP 6 allows you to view this via firewire on an external monitor or TV, but ONLY as downconverted DV. This works fine but in a worse quality on my external TV. Is there really no possibility to view on an external TV via TRUE HDV via HDMI output ?

The MXO from Matrox might work OK (though it will only output HD via SDI or Component analog, no HDMI output) but I'd contact Matrox first about using a DVI adapter with the unit. It connects via a full sized DVI connection.
But quite frankly, you'd be very happy with the power of a MacPro. Especially working with HDV files. Rendering would be a lot faster, Motion and Color would also benefit from the added power of an 8 core machine... plus you can use that Kona 3 card. Best there is IMHO.

P.S. You are running professional software that really is desinged to be run on a professional machine like a Mac Pro...
