Deactivate FARM Feature for one web application

Hi All,
We have a third party product that installs and activates a Farm Level feature that adds some actions on the AdditionalPageHead delegate control.
this feature internally calls some load/set actions which adds to Page Load time on all SharePoint sites in Farm.
We don't want this controls to load on one of our web applications which has Performance sensitive sites. However given that other web apps are using this feature we cant disable the Farm level feature.
Is there a way to prevent/deactivate this feature just on one web application?
Thanks.

I don't think this is possible. You can either request for the web application scoped feature.

ENV: Sharepoint 2010 farm with office web apps + fast search
I have the requirement for one web application to open all its documents in client applications - I can enable feature "OpenInClient". This web application uses team site template and other web application also uses team site template. ( feature
stapling ruled out)  Now I can run powershell cmdlet to enable this feature on all the currently existing site collections. But the requirement is to enable this feature for all the future site collections. This web applications has 60 k site collections
and atleast more than 10 site collections get created each day and they dont like the option to run a powershell script each day to activate this solution.
Is there any other way to by default activate new site collections on this WA to open in client applications by default (can we disable this office webapps features only on one web app)?

I have learnt from this forum that it is not possible to turn off Office web apps on single web application. The line of control lies at farm level and then at site collection.

  • Incoming Email not working for one web app, but IS working for others in same farm.

I have enabled incoming email in a large multi-web application farm running SharePoint 2013 SP1 and the Feb 2015/March 2015 CUs that were pushed down in Windows Updates.  It works just fine for two web applications, but it will not work for one particular
web application. I see the email land in the /drop folder. If I remove the email address from the library in http://nonworkingapp web
application and use it on a library in a http://working web application, then the email is processed successfully. Conversely,
if I take an address from a library in http://working and move it to a library inhttp://nonworkingapp it
does not work. I've tried multiple site collections on http://nonworkingapp. This rules out any SMTP issues, etc. and means
the issue is bound to this web application. Permissions are the same between the "non-working" and "working" locations: domain users are members on the site, and the library inherits permissions from the site.  The App Pool and Timer
Service accounts have rights to the folder and to the library.
The error in the ULS log is the typical error processing message, but it gives no additional information even though I have enabled Verbose logging.
The Incoming E-Mail service has completed a batch. The elapsed time was 00:00: 00.0156294. The service processed 2 message(s) in total. Errors occurred processing 2 message(s): Message ID: Message
    ID:
Typically, you see "alias not found" or some permissions or quota issue here, but this issue is NOT the same as those. In this case NO additional information is provided in ULS.
Edit: running stsadm.exe -o refreshdms -url http://one/failing/site fixed some similar issues where "Unknown alias" was
reported even though the list did have an alias (see here:http://blogs.technet.com/b/vinitt/archive/2009/07/15/e-mail-enabled-list-alias-information-is-not-synchronized-between-configuration-database-and-content-database.aspx).
This did not fix the issue for the case mentioned above.
What could possibly be the issue preventing incoming email from working on this one web application?

Thanks for your reply.  Incoming E-Mail was running on all 3 WFE, however I do not think this was the cause.  As noted, _other_ emails send to http://workingapp are working just fine.  I can send two emails - one to a library on http://workingapp
and another on http://notworkingapp.  The email to http://notworkingapp will sit in the drop folder, while the one to http://workingapp will be processed correctly.  In addition, the ULS log on WFE1 indicates an attempt to process the file fails.
So clearly, the timer job on WFE1 is running and attempting to process the file.  For kicks, I disabled the service on WFE2 and WFE3, but with no change in the behavior.
WRT to #1, I have done this already (as noted in the original post).  I can remove an alias from http://workingapp and place it on http://nonworkingapp and it is not processed.  If I return it to http://workingapp it is processed.  In other
words, I go into Library Settings -> Incoming Email for a working library, and copy the alias, then disable incoming email for that library.  I then go to Library Settings -> Incoming Email for a non-working library, enable incoming email, and paste
the alias.  Once done, emails sent to the alias are not processed.  I then do the reverse, and it works again.
On #2, I have already tried multiple libraries on http://nonworkingapp (also as noted in the original post).
In my environment, incoming email does not work for any library on http://nonworkingapp, but does work for any library on http://workingapp.  Troubleshooting listed above has ruled out any problem with basic mail server configuration or library settings
    - the problem is bound to http://nonworkingapp
I'm not sure what you mean by "steps to reproduce the issue".  If I knew that, I would probably be able to solve the issue.  The best I could come up with to describe the situation would be:
Set up SP 2010 in a three-node configuration with multiple web apps
Enable incoming email and confirm it works
Migrate to a SP2013 SP1 farm in a three node configuration.
Enable a new email alias for a library
Observe that it doesn't work for one web application.
Obviously, it's pretty unlikely that attempting that in a lab would actually have the same result.

  • One Search service application for multiple web applications in a single server

We are planning to host 17 Web applications in a single Server. Do I need to create search service application for each web application or I need to create one  Search service application , create a Content source for each web
application and create a Result source for filtering. Which is the best approach. And which approach takes more RAM memory.
In my application I am using Search web part, "Recently Changed Items", "Popular Items" web parts. when I created only one one  Search Service application for all web applications and using Result sources ,
I am not getting the results. What could be the problem.

    Hi,
One SSA is ok, but you should think about access rights. If the access is clear cut between all the web apps you should be ok with one SSA. Multiple result sources limiting on content source also works, but could easily be bypassed.
Multiple SSA's will eat up RAM/CPU like a mother :)
As for popular etc.. it could be due to how those sources are set up, but haven't investigated or tested this much.
    Thanks,
    Mikael

  • More than one web application on a server.

    Hello,
I'm looking for some advice on multiple web applications.  We currently have one web application, which we'll call www.company.com.  Is it feasible (or even recommended) to create an entirely separate web application on the same SharePoint server
and call it www.anothercompany.com?  Or do we need an entirely separate farm to do this?  Authentication would be carried out using the "company.com" domain in both cases.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    to answer directly
yes you can create more web app on same farm. Deppending on your farm topology, and number of resources needed ( space, bandwidth, processor capacity... ) the number of web app created could be different

  • Configuring the authentication scheme for a web application

    Hi all,
We have a requirement to configure the authentication scheme for a web application where some set of users should access the application using basic LDAP (userid/password) authentication and some using digital certificate authentication.
Since the deployment descriptor (web.xml) allows only one directive for auth-method in logic-config, we want to know if there is any other way to achieve this requirement. We are thinking of a custom login module approach. But we are not able to figure out how to configure the auth-method at runtime from the login servlet.
Please let us know if there is any other approach to achieve this.
I will be thankful if any body shares any specific solution to this issue.

This forum is probably not the correct one to ask in. It's more related to the web container than Java Programming.

  • How to give options to user to select multiple site collection url in sharepoint for a web application.

    should be redirected.
Like, suppose I have a web application named as www.abc.com
Under which I have www.abc.cm/sites/1 and
    www.abc.com/sites/2 and so forth.
Now when head of the company access this url www.abc.com , he should get the display to select any one of the, url and should be redirected.
Please suggest how to achieve this.

    You have multiple options.
    1. You can create a links web part and add the links manually.(As there are only 4 sites)
    2. You can automate by using SharePoint designer.

  • SharePoint 2013 Central Admin says port 80 for three web applications, but IIS says they have different ports

    Hello,
I have three web applications on a SharePoint 2013 servers.  In Central Administrators on the Application Management page where it lists all of the web applications, it shows Port 80 being used 2 3 sites.  When I go to IIS, 2 of the 3 are using
different ports, 81 and 82.  So, only one site IIS says is using port 80. Why is this?  The host file has no entries in it.  Where these web applications extended?
    Thanks,
    Paul
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
From the URL of the web application in Central Administration in the image, you have configured the Alternate Access Mapping for the web applications.
And the URL configured is by default using port 80 if you don’t
assign other ports for the web application, so the port is changed to 80 in Central Administration.
To be able to access the web application, you need to add binging for the web application in IIS(please make sure that you have added the host name in DNS).
For example, SharePoint – 32298, you need to create the binding for the web application in IIS as the image below:

  • Pass data from one web application to another web application

    Hi,
Please provide suggestion for following scenario:
Scenario: Basically the aim is to transfer large amount of data from one application to another and display JSP of second application.
User enteres data on a JSP of one web application. When he submits that data, another web application opens in new window and data from first application should be passed to this second web application. Another web application will display that data on its own JSP. User can perform whatever he wants on second application screen.
    Possible solutions:
    1) response.sendRedirect(): This makes GET request. But, there is large data to send. So, GET is not effective.
    2) forward(request, response): Can't use as I have to pass data to different application that is in another context.
    3) URLConnection: Here, I can make POST request and set attributes in HTTP request and make connection to another application. I can pass data using output stream. But, I can't display second application JSP to user even if I use input stream to read response. Because control will be ultimately in first application only.
Is there any othe method to achieve this or any of the above options extendable?
    Please give your inputs.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you want to migrate list data from one web application to another.
We can migrate list data programmatically, there are some articles for your reference.

  • Is there a way to refer library present in one web application from another

    Hi All,
I have two web applications deployed in same server. I have a common library for both web applications so i dont want to duplicate it by putting it in WEB-INF\lib of two web applications.
Is there a way to make it avialble for both application by maintaing the library in one place?
    Thanks,
    Kishore

You could put it in the common area of your application server, whatever it is. But if it were me, I would just put one copy of the library in each web application. Less scope for classloader problems that way.

  • Good exception handling policy for Java web application

    I'm looking for a good exception handling policy for Java web application. First I found this Java exception handling best practices - How To Do In Java which says that you should never catch the Trowable class nor use e.printStackTrace();
Then I found this Oracle page The Message-Driven Bean Class - The Java EE 6 Tutorial, which does just that. So now I'm confused. Is there a good page online for an exception handling policy for Java EE Web applications? I have a hard time finding one. I've read that you should not catch the Exception class. I've been catching it previously to make sure that some unknown exception doesn't slip through early in the loop and stops all other customers from executing later on in the loop. We have a loop which runs once a minute implemented using the Quartz framework. Is it OK if you just change the implementation to catch the RuntimeException class instead of the Exception class? We're using Java 7 and the Jetty Servlet Container.

I'm looking for a good exception handling policy for Java web application.
If you have not done so I suggest you start by reviewing the several trails in The Java Tutorials.
Those trails cover both HOW to use exceptions and WHEN to use them.
This trail discusses  the 'controversy' you mention regarding 'Unchecked Exceptions'
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/exceptions/runtime.html
    Unchecked Exceptions — The Controversy
Because the Java programming language does not require methods to catch or to specify unchecked exceptions (RuntimeException, Error, and their subclasses), programmers may be tempted to write code that throws only unchecked exceptions or to make all their exception subclasses inherit from RuntimeException. Both of these shortcuts allow programmers to write code without bothering with compiler errors and without bothering to specify or to catch any exceptions. Although this may seem convenient to the programmer, it sidesteps the intent of the catch or specify requirement and can cause problems for others using your classes.
Why did the designers decide to force a method to specify all uncaught checked exceptions that can be thrown within its scope? Any Exception that can be thrown by a method is part of the method's public programming interface. Those who call a method must know about the exceptions that a method can throw so that they can decide what to do about them. These exceptions are as much a part of that method's programming interface as its parameters and return value.
The next question might be: "If it's so good to document a method's API, including the exceptions it can throw, why not specify runtime exceptions too?" Runtime exceptions represent problems that are the result of a programming problem, and as such, the API client code cannot reasonably be expected to recover from them or to handle them in any way. Such problems include arithmetic exceptions, such as dividing by zero; pointer exceptions, such as trying to access an object through a null reference; and indexing exceptions, such as attempting to access an array element through an index that is too large or too small.
Generally don't catch an exception unless you plan to HANDLE the exception. Logging, by itself is NOT handliing.
    First I found this Java exception handling best practices - How To Do In Java which says that you should never catch the Trowable class nor use e.printStackTrace();
That article, like many, has some good advice and some poor or even bad advice. You get what you pay for!
I've read that you should not catch the Exception class.
Ok - but all that does is indicate that a problem of some sort happened somewhere. Not very useful info. Java goes to a lot of trouble to provide specific exceptions for specific problems.
I've been catching it previously to make sure that some unknown exception doesn't slip through early in the loop and stops all other customers from executing later on in the loop.
If the exception is 'unknown' then maybe it NEEDS to 'stop all other customers from executing later on in the loop'.
That is EXACTLY why you don't want to do that. You need to identify which exceptions should NOT stop processing and which ones should.
Some 'unknown' exceptions can NOT be recovered and indicate a serious problem, perhaps with the JVM itself. You can NOT just blindly keep executing and ignore them without risking data corruption and/or the integrity of the entire system Java is running on.
Is it OK if you just change the implementation to catch the RuntimeException class instead of the Exception class? We're using Java 7 and the Jetty Servlet Container.
No - not if you want a well-behaved system.
Don't catch exceptions unless you HANDLE/resolve them. There are times when it makes sense to log the exception (which does NOT handle it) and then raise it again so that it gets handled properly later. Yes - I know that is contrary to the advice given in that article but, IMHO, that article is wrong about that point.
If you have ever had to maintain/fix/support someone else's Java code you should already understand how difficult it can be to find WHERE a problem occurs and WHAT the exact problem is when exceptions are not handled properly.
