Deactivated CS4 upgrade. Also deactivate CS3?

I recently installed Windows 7, but before I did, I deactivated my upgrade copy of CS4, but failed to deactivate my full copy of CS3. Did I need to deactivate both copies/versions or is it okay to deactivate just the latest version?
Here is the order of events of what I did...
Installed CS3
After some time, I bought and installed the upgrade version of CS4. At this point both CS3 and CS4 are installed on my machine. For example, I can run either Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS4.
Deactivated CS4
Installed Windows 7 on the same computer
Reinstalled CS4
Activated CS4 with the serial numbers from the packaging from both my CS4 and CS3 boxes.
Is it okay that I did not deactivate CS3 between steps 3 & 4?

The activations are separate for each installed version.
Even if you failed to deactivate before installing Win7, you may still be able to activate CS3.   Try, and if it fails, call Adobe support.

  • CS4 Upgrade - still use CS3?

I currently have CS3 and I'm thinking about getting the CS4 Upgrade. I know if I buy the regular CS4 software I'll be able to use CS3 AND CS4, but I'm wondering if this is also true if I get the CS4 Upgrade. I've never upgraded before, so I'm not really sure how that works. There are parts of CS3 that I prefer over CS4 (and vice versa), so if purchasing the Upgrade means I can't use both on the same computer, then I'd rather not get CS4 at all.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Yes you can still use both versions after the upgrade.
The upgrade does not touch the earlier version, it is a full installation in a separate folder under Program Files.
You can't have both versions running simultaneously but that's hardly a drawback.
(Most of the features removed from CS4 can be added back in.)

  • What is appropriate CS3 to CS4 upgrade sequence?

I am upgrading from CS3 Web Premium to CS4 Web Premium. CS4 is to be delivered in 3 days and I have been reading various threads in this forum about possible installation problems. I am sensitive to avoiding any installation problems so am requesting a bit of upfront help. I am using WIN XP Pro sp3.
Given that I do not care to keep CS3 on my computer but, instead, replace it with CS4:
Do I deactivate CS3 then uninstall CS3 or install CS4 activate CS4 then deactivate CS3 then uninstall CS3 or is there another sequence that I should follow?
    Thanks.

    > Given that I do not care to keep CS3 on my computer but, instead, replace it with CS4:
You should seriously reconsider that. CS4 is very new with some bugs
    still work out.
Visit the Photoshop forum for an idea of what I'm referring to. There's
really no reason to remove CS3. But...
Should you decide to remove it, then yes, deactivate first and then
    uninstall from the control panel.

  • CS3/CS4 Upgrade

I installed CS3, I then bought a copy of CS4 upgrade and started to install it.
Part way through, when it asked for CS3 serial number the only product option was CS3 Extended. I then realised that the upgrade copy I had bought was CS4 Extended upgrade.
    I then aborted the upgrade.
The splash screen on CS3 about Photoshop now shows it as CS3 Extended even though it is just the normal version.
I bought a normal version of CS4 upgrade but it will not recognise the serial, it wants a valid CS3 Extended serial.
I uninstalled CS3 & CS4 Trial and then re-installed CS3, still the same problem with the solash screen showing it as CS3 Extended.
If I uninstalled CS3 again and deleted all registry entries to Photoshop would this solve my problem?
I have also tried the Adobe cleaner tool but this still left registry entries for Photoshop

If I uninstalled CS3 again and deleted all registry entries to Photoshop would this solve my problem?
Not at all. You need to delete the PCD database and any otehr asociated licensing and product identification files or simply manually deactivate everything, choosing to eradicate any stored serial numbers. Still, it wouldn't do anything for you, if you still had the wrong serials. Therefore do the only sensible thing - call phone support to sort this out. Nobody here can do that for you.

  • Cannot deactivate CS3 but can CS4

I have AE CS3 as a single program, BUT I have CS4 design premium which does not include AE.
I am just about reinstalling windows and succesfully deactivated CS4 design premium. However, AE CS3 cannot be deactivated saying there's no internet connection.
What is up with that? This is insaine. I am sitting here with all my drives ready to go for reinstall and this stupid thing holds me back. Now I can be ready for all the massacre and questioning from Adobe when I will try to reactivate it.
These are the times when I envy all those warez users who don't have to go through this pain.

Thanks Mylenium. I am succesfully over this blood pressure raging nightmare. Finally what happened is, I have reactivated CS4, then restart, then I was able to deactivate AE CS3 (!!! DUH !!!) and then CS4. I have no clue about why the ordering mattered but at least it's over with now. Phew...
Originally I had the CS2 package. Later on I wanted to get AE. But by that time CS3 came out. I didn't want to upgrade the whole thing, so I just bought AE CS3 itself. So now I had the CS2 package and AE CS3. And even later when CS4 came out I upgraded to CS4. But because AE was a separate package I just kept it. So I ended up with CS4 design package + AE CS3. Makes sense, eh? Anyhow, that's how we cooking and apparently something was not liked with the sucktivation.
So anyone with issues like this, apparently activate the older package first and then the newer package. At least that did the trick for me.

  • I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking first, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it. What can I do??

I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking for potential problems with Adobe software, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So after consulting some forums, I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it, back in 2011... What can I do?? Everything was fine before I upgraded that *#$%* Yosemite.

You can find the CS4 download here: https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs4-product-downloads.html

  • CS3 to CS4 upgrade procedure

Adobe instructs to install CS4 upgrade on top of CS3 in order to get varification. I understand that it is possible to fully uninstall CS3 prior to CS4 without problems if you have the old SN. Is there any advantage or disadvandage of upgrading this way?
    --Ken

I would keep CS3 installed on your PC if I were you - just in case. Since I installed CS4, I've gone back to using CS3, due to CS4's sluggish performance that I and many other people are experiencing.
I'll go back to CS4 when the bug fix comes out...

  • Installing CS4 and keeping InDesign CS3

Can I install CS4 without removing InDesign CS3? I need to keep both on my computer. is there a trick to this? Also, if I decide to remove CS4 later from my computer and move it elsewhere, can I uninstall it without imperilling InDesign CS3?

You can install CS4 and keep CS3. Just remember that IF these are upgrades, you cannot use CS4 and CS3 on different computers simultaneously. They are for the use of a single person. Technically, your upgrade license for CS4 supersedes you license for CS3. You no longer have a license for CS3 anymore. I doubt Adobe objects to you using  CS4 and CS3 on the same computer. You can remove CS4 on a computer and put in on a new machine. A commercial license allows the non-simultaneous use on two computers. You probably can turn on the old computer when you have an occasional job that requires CS3.

  • Installing CS2 so I can install cs4 upgrade on windows 7

I just got a new pc has windows 7 pro OS and need to install my adobe CS. I have CS2 with a CS4 upgrade.  As you can probably guess i am having trouble getting the cs to install. I would like to upgrade to cs 5.5 but if I cant get the cs 2 on to upgrade to cs 4 I doubt i can get a cs5.5 upgrade installed!   I have tried installing cs2 a couple times and keep getting the serial number screen.  When I uninstalled it I had to deactivate it so it would seem that it was acttive just unusable. I will try running the cs4 uopgrade in thje AM but was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is a waste of my time or is there actually a way to get this installed and working properly.  any help is greatly appreciated.
    Keith

I bought it from Adobe. Full upgrade price. It was about 3 years ago -
about. I wanted a backup in case Freehand tanked. Kept using FHmx and
forgot I even had CS4. So FHmx tanked Friday and I can't get it to show
the toolbars. So, I'll  install CS4 and work all weekend on this rush
job. I'm on a Mac. OsX.6.8. Also on Aleve until I get this solved!

  • Problem installing cs4 upgrade

    <<serial number removed>>
In my pc (windows 7 64 bit) there is installed Adobe Design Premium CS3, now I try to install Adobe CS4 upgrade but it don't fint on the system Adobe cs3 and if I put the serial number of CS3 compares an error (serial number doesn't match)
    What Can I do?

Is your CS3 also the Italian version? If not, this won't work. Other than that standard answer: Call support by phone.

  • CS4 upgrade install quits during AIR

Hi. I need to upgrade CS4 (Design Premium) (upgrade from CS3) on an iMac. However, when I put in the Application 1 DVD, it gets as far as the "Currently installing Adobe AIR" step and then appears to stop. I've left it for more than an hour now and it's still at this stage. No error messages or other hints of any kind.
I can still move the arrow/cursor so I don't think the iMac is locking up.
This has happened with upgrades both on DVD, and downloaded from Adobe's site right after purchasing them. I purchased the upgrade online last week, hoping to upgrade fast. But when the downloaded installer didn't work, Adobe agreed to send me the upgrade on DVD in case the downloaded installer had been corrupted or otherwise screwed up.
The iMac is running OS X 10.5.8. Processor is 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Memory is 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (all from "About This Mac")
CS3 has run with no problems on this machine and I am not aware of any other issues that this Mac is having. I just need to upgrade so I can handle CS4 files from clients or vendors.
I have a MacBookPro that I can try installing on but I use the MacBookPro more than the iMac. I'd really rather not have it disabled or tied up with an upgrade that takes a long time to install or won't work properly.
Can't get through to Adobe's phone tech support or even customer service. On-hold times upwards of 45 minutes. VERY frustrating and disappointing.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Betsy, below is how I solved my problem last week. Maybe it will help you?:
Apparently my earlier installation attempts had resulted in some stray or partial files that were throwing off the installer.
I removed all the folders with "CS4" in their names in Library/Application Support/Adobe, followed the steps and ran the script at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406241.html#CS4CleanMac, shut down and restarted, and then ran the upgrade installation successfully from the CS4 DVDs.
    Suggestions:
    - Contact Adobe's tech support 800 number EARLY in the day, soon after they open which is 7 am CST, I believe. My wait times on hold were much shorter than later in the day. They were also prompt about calling back within two hours of the end of my tech support call to ask if the problem had been fixed.
    - Even though the software is offered in a downloadable format, just do it the old-fashioned way and buy the disks and install from them. Until I was able to try the disks, I couldn't be sure that the problems weren't being caused by downloaded files that got corrupted. The files for the CS4 upgrade are HUGE and it takes a long time to download anyway. I thought I was saving time by not waiting for the DVDs to be shipped but it didn't work out that way. Adobe's applications are gigantic and complex anymore and there's a lot that can go wrong.

  • CS4 Upgrade Questions

    Hello,
My Dad currently has a version of CS3 witch he hardly uses. I'm wanting too upgrade that too CS4 but I have a few questions.
Firstly when I get the CS4 upgrade disk can I just put it straight into my Mac and install it, all Photoshop will ask of me is the serial number too CS3 too check I am eligible too upgrade correct? That's all the Adobe website is saying I will need. (The current CS3 we have is also a Mac version)
Also can I go on to then register CS4 too myself? Have it as my product with my contact details and email address etc? Or will I not get asked that during installation? Will it automatically register it too the owner of the CS3 serial(my dad?).
And would I be correct in thinking that CS3 serial could not be used again in the future too upgrade from but could still be installed on 2 machine's?
Many thanks for any help in advance.
    Ben

You are entitled to one upgrade.
When I installed CS3, I was asked for my previous serial number, which is on the box or in the documentation of the older product.
Were I you, I'm not sure I'd upgrade to CS4 though. There are lots of reports of it having major issues with both Leopard and Snow Leopard. I am sticking with CS3 for now.
CS4 lets you paint directly on 3D models, wrap 2D images around 3D shapes, convert gradient maps to 3D objects, add depth to layers and text, get print-quality output with the new ray-tracing rendering engine, and enjoy exporting to supported common 3D formats; the new Adjustment and Mask Panels. It's a 64-bit application in Windows Vista and not OS X.
Adobe's Facebook page suggests that CS5 will come out this year and they're working to improve the application. I'd like to see a 64-bit Mac application that doesn't crash like CS4 is said to do on Snow Leopard.

  • Editing Flash CS4 files in Flash CS3

Looking to upgrade our main multimedia production machine from CS3 to CS4, but we probably won't upgrade all the other machines just yet.
Main question: If you work on a Flash file in CS4, can you work on it in CS3 and save it, or will some of the functionality be lost in doing so? Or is a matter of just having to save it in a certain way to make sure it works?
Also, is there any issue with importing CS3 Illustrator, Flash or any other kind of files into After Effects CS4?
    Thanks!
    Matt

cs4 can save files for cs3 so, it "..is a matter of just having to save it in a certain way..".
you could lose some functionality if you used any flash player 10 capabilites that aren't in fp 9.  to prevent that you would always publish for fp 9 in your cs4 file to ensure you could use the file in cs3.
i can't see any problems with importing non-flash cs4 files into flash cs3.

Hey Ned many thanks for responding. Well before I wasted more time on chat I tried and deactivated again but no success. Then pinged www.adobe.activatie.com a couple of times - tried again and hey presto it burst into life. I have a cabled network connection so don't know what happened. Tried the same with Dreamweaver as well as Photoshop CS3 and also worked. Perhaps they had a glitch with their server? Any way reinstalled - set date to 01/11/2011 for updates and now all back up and running on new computer. Well Adobe support for me was crap which is a shame when their statement on support is so positive. I've spent thousands with Adobe over the years but I'll think hard before I get spend any more unless they up their support game.
