Dead Airport Express? Try this to bring it back to life

I have owned many and followed all the failed wireless G models of the airport express, most of them had internal part failures.
Therefore ymmv,
I own many of the newer wireless N models.
I always have one sitting in a drawer just in case
Sometimes it sits there for months at a time never to see ac current.
Now this has happened twice over extended non-uses
The Airport express would fail to power cycle when plugged in
Not even a flash of the led light.
No matter how long left plugged in, it would never power cycle and start working, it would always stay cold to the touch as well.
I have found that if you plug this in/out multiple times fast to ac current 5-10 times, you then will get that green led light to come on for a second or two, at that point leave plugged in and let it boot normally.
Ussually all your previous settings will remain.
I have found that since it can be difficult to rapidly plug in and unplug these due to the blades folding over.
try an extension cable.
I think if these are left over time without ac current applied to them, the internal capacitor drains and they fail to power cycle & boot.
They will not recover if just left plugged in, kind of like the old powerbook pismo, dead pram battery meant you could not power it on, disconnect dead pram and it would power on, reconnect battery once on and the pram battery would once again take charge.
whereas each time you plug the express in, it takes a very small charge, keep doing it then she will have enough current to cycle on and boot.
Sorry for the long winded & off topic powerbook example
No a soft or hard reset will not help if the express fails to power cycle, tried it, never works, that only works if the express accepts the ac current.
Sorry for the long winded & off topic powerbook example
Since we have apple care, Apple is sending a replacement.
Maybe this will help a few that have no apple care

To enter recover mode:
1. Turn your phone OFF. If you can't turn it off, FORCE a turn off by holding down the Power and the Home buttons together for 5 seconds.
2. While your phone is turned OFF, HOLD DOWN the Home button. Keep it held down.
3. Connect your phone to the USB cable on your computer. KEEP the Home button held down during all this time.
4. Keep holding the Home button down until you see the iTunes/restore screens appear on your computer and your iPhone.

  • ITunes7 corrupted your iPod?  Here's how to bring it back to life:

Here is the only thing I have found that brings mine back to life:
Find a LiveCD Linux distro that has gparted on it. I have been using Puppy Linux, but found that the gparted project has also built a streamelined LiveCD image. (Check it out at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php. Next time I will try it instead.)
Once I connect the iPod under Linux, I can run gparted and display the drive and partition configuration. I have found that when the iPod is corrupted, gparted does not recognize any partitions on it. When I go to create a partition, it instead prompts me to set the disklabel (say whether THE DRIVE ITSELF, NOT THE PARTITION, is msdos, mac, etc.). If I choose msdos (what it should be), nothing happens. If I choose mac, then it sets the disklabel accordingly and I am allowed to create a new partition.
Instead, I then change the disklabel back to msdos and recreate the FAT32 partition, shutdown, reboot to Windows, and presto the iPod is now properly read by Windows and iTunes.
When the iPod fails again, rinse and repeat.
Personally, I will not be reconnecting my iPod AT ALL until I see that there is a fix. My iPod ran perfectly fine for TWO WEEKS after doing this procedure. Then I connected it to add a couple of new albums and I had to go through this process all over again...
Hope this helps you bring your iPod back to life!
    For further explanation:
A disklabel is a file at the beginning of the disk that indicates where each partition begins and how many disk sectors it occupies.
It appears as though iTunes 7 is corrupting the disklabel, and this procedure allows you to rebuild it. The problem with the formatting utilities under Windows is that they are dependent upon that preexisting disklabel and can't properly reformat the partition because the corrupted disklabel incorrectly offsets the partition.
Perhaps someone at Apple can confirm this and/or use this information to help fix the problem...

  • Latest firmware update 6.3 and dead airport express basestation

My Airport Express basestation (aebs) is 13 month old. It suddenly went dead. No light, no reset, nothing.
    And maybe a coincidence:
It happened only 36 hours after I loaded the new 6.3 firmware update.
I wonder if anyone had the same experience regarding a dead aebs due to firmware update 6.3. At least - compared to the posts here - a dead aebs is not such a rare incident as one might wish it would.
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Exactly the same has happened to mine, although I don't recall doing a firmware update. Yesterday I just downloaded and installed iTunes 6.0.2 & QuickTime 7.0.4. However, when I came home from work this evening my Airport Express had no LED on as normal. It was cold and had obviously been off for sometime. The fuse it OK and it's just one month after the 1-year guarantee period. Sounds suspiciously like a plot to me....
What has Apple done to kill my Airport Express???

  • Linksys WAG120N and Airport Express - Does this work ??

    Hi,
    I just replaced my Linksys WAG54G by a WAG120N modem-router.
I still have a problem with my Airport Express.
Everything was working fine with the WAG54G but since I'm using the WAG120N I always got the same problem.
After switching OFF-ON the Airport Express, I can only see it during a few minutes in the Airport Utility. After this, it disappears (until next reboot, etc.).
I've used the same setup/config for my modem-router (compared to the old one).
    Firmware has been upgraded.
I've completely re-configured the Airport Express.
    I've re-installed the Airport Utility.
I've also tried to use other channels, etc.
When I'm using the WAG54G, I do not have any problem !
Is this WAG120N finally compatible with the Airport Express ?
I'm really needing some help (before bringing it back to the vendor and selecting another model) !
    Please, it's urgent !
    Thks

Yes it is visible during a few minutes when I switch it off-on.
I can then access the config and change some parameters but after those +/- 5 minutes it disappear from the Airport List.
... and this is also true when you have the AX directly connected to your iMac via Ethernet?
I just want to be sure that the AX itself is not potentially fault.
When joined to another wireless network, of course, it will be dependent on the "stability" of that network. One other thing that might be possible is if you have the new Linksys configured for any special type of mode. One that I can think of is called "burst" mode. Another is wide-channel mode for the 2.4 GHz band. Neither of these are supported by the AX and may be a reason that it keeps dropping the connection.
Finally, were both routers purchased in your country and are made to operate there? I've seen this problem before when, for example, an individual buys a router, let's say, to be used in Japan and tries to operate it in Europe.

  • Airport Express - Can this be used to connect my wired Xbox360?

    Hi
I currently have a Timecapsule set up as my main internet and network hub. I wanted to connect my Xbox360 and Mac Mini to the internet and network but they are in a different room and I wanted to use ethernet cables (the Xbox doesn't have wifi).
Could I use an Express for this - i.e. connect the express near the xbox and within the signal from the Timecapsule and then run an ethernet cable from the express to the xbox - would this work? Would I get close to 802n speeds this way. My Mac Mini only has 802g so if I connected this way would I get closer to 802n speeds when transferring data across the network etc.
Let me know - my other option is to just an ethernet cable from the Timecapsule to the Mac Mini and Xbox - flat ethernet cable - but this would need to be run under the carpets.
I'd like to know which option would give me good speeds etc.

With regards to plugging your XBox into the Airport Express, then yes, it appears this is possible - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1515 (Although I don't have an xbox or an Airport Express so I can't guarantee this).
In theory you should get 802.11n speed between the wireless points although your speed via the ethernet cable is slower (in theory) than n-mode. In practice, the n-mode won;t connect at full speed all the time and you're likely to get a better speed from a cable running from the mac-mini to the TC.
I use my Macbook over the air to my TC in n-mode and while the speed isn't lightning fast, it gets the job done.

  • IPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s drop connection with airport express. This just started recently after working fine for a year. PC does not drop. Wifi signal fine. Help?

Streaming music with airport express and Apple TV to 2 different systems. No problem with Apple TV. iPad and iPhone 4 and new 5s keep dropping their connection to airport express. Airport express connection to wifi appears to be fine. No dropping by windows PC. This just started recently after working fine for a year. Help?

What does any of this have to do with the Apple TV?

  • Airport Express - will this work?

I want to use an Airport Express to provide extended wireless coverage, without using WDS. I know the AE supports ethernet bridging (proxySTA).
    Setup:
    - have main wireless router connected to cable modem for internet, and 2 PCs.
    - have additional wireless router to be used as AP
    Is this possible:
    - install AE set for proxySTA to join main wireless router network in different room, but within range of main wireless router.
    - connect 2nd wireless router to AE via ethernet, having IP address within the same subnet as main router but outside DHCP address from the main router.
    - set same SSID, WPA2 password, and disable DHCP on 2nd wireless router
    SO, is the possible?

connect 2nd wireless router to AE via ethernet, having IP address within the same subnet as main router but outside DHCP address from the main router.
Yes, this can be done by either configuring this AirPort Express Base Station (AX) with a manually assigned IP address or using the DHCP Reservation feature on the main router (assuming it is another Apple router)
set same SSID, WPA2 password, and disable DHCP on 2nd wireless router
Yes, this can be done by reconfiguring this AX as a bridge.

  • I have a Time Capsule as my main WiFi router in my home.  I'd like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house located approx 100 feet away. Will the AirPort Express fill this need?  Is the AirPort Extreme a better fit?

I am using a Time Capsule in conjunction with my IMAC 27" system as my main WiFi router in my home.  I would like to extend my WiFi service to my guest house which is located about 100 feet away.  Can I use the Airport Express to provide this extended range?  Would I be better served to use the Airport Extreme?  Thanks!

The normal location for an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme is a point that is about half way between the main router....the Time Capsule in this case.....and the area that needs more wireless coverage.....the guest house.
I doubt that you will be able to locate an AirPort at this "half way" point, correct?
Before you buy anything, take a laptop, iPhone, iPad, etc out to the guest house as a test to see if you can log on and get a reliable Internet connection over the wireless.
If you can, then either an AirPort Express or AirPort Exreme could  be used to provide additional wireless signal coverage in the guest house.
If you cannot get a reliable connection with the "test" mentionded above, neither AirPort will help since they can only "extend" the quality of signal that they receive.
If this is the case, you will need to look at running an Ethernet cable from the Time Capsule out to the guest house to provide the reliable connection that you will need.

  • I have a nokia siemens router. Can I use apple airport express with this to expand my wi-fi range

I HAVE A NOKIA SIEMENS ROUTER. THROUGH THAT I AM USIING WI-FI NETWORK AT MY HOME. I WANT TO EXTEND ITS RANGE SO I BUY AIRPORT EXPRESS. CAN I USE WITH THIS ROUTER

Please do not type in all capital letters. It is difficult to read and appears as if you are SHOUTING.
You can use the AirPort Express to provide more wireless coverage for your router if you connect an Ethernet cable from the router to the AirPort Express and configure it to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Siemens router.
If you are asking if you can use the Express to extend the wireless network using wireless only, it is extremely unlikely that this will work since Apple's "extend" a wireless network feature appears to work only with other Apple products.
As far as we know, it is not compatible with devices from any other manufacturer.

  • I have lost the amber/green light indicator on AirPort Express.  How canI get it back?

How can i get the amber/green light indicator on the AirPort Express.  It has stopped working.

If I do a factory reset, will I have to reset the network configuration?
Yes, but based on what you are telling us, I doubt that the device will restart after you try this. You have tested with other AC wall jacks, correct?
I just purchased the unit in April this year, it would be very soon to have to replace it, especially since I don't think I kept the receipt...
Most stores keep a record of purchases. Otherwise, Apple support can look at the serial number and know approximately when the device was sold. You should have no problem getting a replacement, I would imagine.

  • Can anyone help me  bring it back to life?

OK -- My problems (like many others on this forum) started with upgrading to iTunes 7. Here's the as-quick-as-I-can-make-it story line:
    - Please note that I am using a new iMac, NOT windows.
1 - iPod (3G 30GB) wouldn't update, made iTunes 7 freeze up every time it was attached. Tried to restore. My entire system froze during the restore, and I was forced to power off the computer. (I know... BAD move, but I had no choice.)
2 - iPod frozen with apple logo on screen, not recognized by iTunes or the computer at all. Can hear hard drive spinning. Will restart but not power off.
3 - Restart iPod in disk mode and attach to computer. When attaching, computer tells me I have a bad disk and will open the Disk Repair utility. The iPod is listed there as a "27.9 GB Apple Computer" disk, but none of the utilities (first aid, erase, etc.) will actually work. Some options grayed out, some just don't work when I try them.
4 - Turn on iTunes (upgraded to 7.0.1) while iPod attached in disk mode. It tells me "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod..." When I click the restore button, the progress bar appears. Got about half way in 10 minutes or so, then froze there for hours. Finally shut it down.
4 - Tried to restore iPod using iPod updater from 2006-06-28. Get progress bar for a while, then a message simply stating that iPod update failed.
Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? I'm willing to try anything at this point.... Please help if you can!
    Thanks!

    An update...
I downloaded Apple's (rather large!) list of software updates today, and I was finally able to recognize my iPod again. I did a restore using the iPod updater from 06-2006, and all seemed to work OK. (I'm afraid to try the new one again!)
Then I tried to re-load my music library from iTunes, and got stuck. It froze up after a while and wouldn't go any further.
When I disconnected my iPod from my computer, I find 2 podcasts and nothing else, though iTunes told me it had transferred 600+ songs. Those 2 podcasts do play fine, and the basic iPod software all seems to be intact.
So -- anyone get through this connection problem and have any ideas to share??

  • Emac monitor goes black – slap brings it back to life

Last couple of days my emac monitor will just shut down and go black, just like an old TV tube packing up used to. It won't return on restart, but did return a couple of times after I took out mains lead from side of computer, let it rest, then tried again. However, today, this solution didn't work, but a tap to the side of the computer did get the screen going. I've read a number of different possible explanations for what might be the problem – everything from battery, to airport card to it's terminally ill, get a new computer, so don't really know what to do. Don't want to go and buy a new computer if all I really needed to do was change the battery. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

That's all good news. You have the later and better USB 2.0 eMac. However, the model is one containing groups of units affected by the logic board issues with bad capacitors. The logic board issues were most commonly associated with these serial number ranges:
    G8412xxxxxx- G8520xxxxxx
    YM412xxxxxx - YM520xxxxxx
    VM440xxxxxx - VM516xxxxxx
[again, don't post your serial number here]
If yours is in the list, all you can do is keep an eye on it. Keeping it clean like you've done should help keep internal temps down and that may help longevity. The repair--if the shop can find an unaffected logic board---is nearly as much as a new Mac Mini.
If your board goes, and you are within driving distance of Salem OR USA, there is a shop that offers a low-cost repair of bad eMac logic boards rather than a replacement; it's much less expensive IF you don't have to ship a 50-pound computer round trip.
Your particular eMac can take advantage of newer, larger RAM modules that were not available when Apple engaved the specs in stone (Apple says 1GB max RAM). With the proper modules, you can increase RAM to a total of 2GB with two of these:
    1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHz CAS 2.5 184 Pin DIMM
We have one of the above installed in my wife's USB 2.0 eMac alongside an original 256MB stick for a total of 1.25GB RAM and it's completely stable. However, you should get the RAM from the source I mentioned as they test in Macs. Similar RAM form a retail outlet may be PC-only.

  • Bringing atlantik back to life?

Does everybody remember atlantik? It was a fantastic network monopoly game that was moderately popular up until about a few months ago, when Ubuntu removed the software from its repositories and (it seems) Arch did as well.
The software was dropped from Ubuntu because it was not compatible with KDE 4. The development team did not upgrade the software and judging by the atlantik website, it seems the development has halted.
So my question to the Arch community is this - can we revive this project? Is there any interest in doing so? Would anyone be willing to sign on?
I'd hate to see such a great app just die off...

    Good news, everybody!
I managed to get in contact with a member of the KDE Games team. He explained that he is definitely open to reviving this project and has indicated that he could help get some developers started.
Now onto the next bit of good news. I managed to find a copy of the 0.7.1 source files (they are a bit hard to come by) and it seems that the software is written in C++. Thankfully, I know a bit of C++ and would love to sign onto this project.
I don't think I can do this alone, though. Is anybody willing to sign on with me?

My Safari screen is grayed out.  It does not respond to touch. How can I restore it back to life?

Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Cache. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and slide to shut down. then hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears to start up.
You can also reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep button and home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears (takes about 10 seconds) - ignore the red slider.
