Dead board or psu

have been running this system for a month now and last week I turned puter on and the fans started off running very slow (not the whine that I am used to  4-80's and 1-120 fans) any way the fans quit working and the comp did not start tried several more time by pushing the on button. the NEW ultra xconnect psu blew a fuse I removed the ps from the case and opened it up and replaced the fuse I then plugged back in the 110v and nothing else I jumpered pin 3 and 4 and blew another fuse rma time Ultra sent me a new psu upon installing this new psu i repaced the asus mother board with a chaintech znf3-250 (couple of months old) unit won't power on ....installed new k8n-neo unit won't power on .....power supply will start to spin fans and then shut down if I disconnet the 4pin wire from the motherboard the psu will start and keep running (the powersupply) help don't know where i went wrong

Disconnect all of the drives, remove all of the memory and pci cards except for only only one stick in the slot nearest to the cpu and one video card.  Also disconnect the AC cord before doing a cmos clear.
See if it will start up with this barebones configuration.  Then add the other sticks of memory.  If it still works, run memtest86 to check the memory.  5 passes without any errors should be enough.
Add the drives one at a time to see if any of them are causing the problem.  Once you know that the drives are good, do the same with the PCI cards.  Let us know the results.
It would help if we knew what was in the system.  Use the info that I provide on my systems as a guide to what we need to know.

  • Dead board or PSU? failed XP install?

    I have a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI Motherboard with Hiper Type R 580W PSU
Couple of months go I left the power off to the PC for a few days(The switch on the back of the PSU off). On turning it back on (PSU switch lit up) the PC wouldn't power up on the front button, no LED's nothing. After a considerable amount of wire waggling and taking it apart a couple of times it did power up and has been fine for the last couple of months so long as you don't turn the power off on the PSU switch on the back of the PC. And...Windows XP died on me at the weekend, wouldn't start in safe mode etc and failed on installing over the top of the old system so went for a clean install (I have all my storage files on a second drive so that's safe) there's only the system on the first drive.
I reformatted the drive the long way which went OK but when Windows started to install it failed saying a whole load of .dll files couldn't be copied. I shut everything down to go back to it the day after but on connecting the power sure enough I have no power again, PSU switch lights up but apart from that it's dead. I've tried jumping the front power switch terminals on the board with no luck.
So two issues, no power which I assume is either a dead or touchy board or PSU. There's no light on the board so any way of testing the PSU? I don't have a spare that I can try.
If and when I do get power any ideas on the failed windows install?
I'd appreciate your help before I start throwing money at it getting a new PSU or motherboard.
    Cheers
    Al

  • Half dead board??

Have just got SiS648 - msi 6585 - when I power up the D-Bracket lights instantly turn to green but no vga ( msi g440 8xagp ) does not initalise. No beep , keyboard lights flash , IDE drives reset. Have tried pci vga card still no luck - have also tried removing all other devices ( no other cards in system ) and hdd,dvd floppy - still no luck. restting cmos makes no difference.
    Dead board ??

    Bentley,
Open up your side case, switch on you com, see if your processor fan is running and also see if your mobo LED1 is lighted. If all these are through, check if your VGA card is sloted properly into the VGA slot and also check if your rams sitting properly.
You can also try removing you D-Bracket as having the D-Bracket plug wrongly could caused problems too.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • K7T Pro2-A MS-6330, Dead board?

Hi, I've looked at all the other posts about this board and I think it's either a power supply problem, leaky capacitors, or just plain 'ol dead board.
The DLEDs stop on a random problem (it changes around every time) after the 1st boot after the system has been off for about 20mins or so.  If I turn it off and boot again right away it's always 4 red LEDs the next time, and successive times.  But if I wait for 20 mins or so and try it will be another random LED stop, although it hasn't ever gotten past video card initialization.
I have a couple of capacitors that are slightly bulgy at the top, but nothing leaking (checked the back of the board too).  In the past I have noted a chemically burning smell every once in a while, not very often.
So should I replace the power supply, fix capacitors, replace the board?
    thanks for any help,  dave

they suffer from a dodgey voltage regulator as well so its not worth it on them

  • Dead board, PS, or CPU?

I am working on a PC for a family member, here are the specs:
    MSI KT4V 1.0a
    Antec true380 PS
    Athlon XP 2100+ (retail heatsink)
    512 MB Simpletech pc2700
    Western Digital Caviar 40GB Harddrive
    Gainward Geforce2 mx400 Videocard
After fixing a bios problem with a flash I started to install windows.  After entering the cd-key all seemed to be going well.  Then out of nowhere I hear a pop, smell a little ozone (like from a blown IC or maybe a big spark), and the system reboots.  It stuck at the boot screen so I rebooted it.  Then there was NOTHING!  The machine just sat there, no beeping or D-Bracket LEDs ?(  I removed the video card on a whim and as soon as I plugged the machine back in it started up.  There were no beeps and the D-Bracked leds were all red.  After reinstalling the Video it just sat there, the power button does nothing.  I have tried clearing the CMOS and it didn't help.  Any ideas on what is dead?  I'm thinking it's the CPU, PS, or MB.  Also, is there any special procedure to reset the CMOS in this case (I thought maybe removing the CPU for a while)?  Thanks in advance.

Well, I have went over every inch of the board and I can't find anything wrong.  However, having replace every other part in the computer and testing with a know working CPU, PSU, RAM, and videocard; I have decided it is the board.  I'm just gonna RMA the thing and hope for the best.  Thanks for the help and if you think of anything else please let me know.  I won't be able to ship the board until Next Monday, so I'm open to suggestions.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum = Dead Board?

I hope that you folks could help me.  I have built about 100 computers between personal and professional lives.
This unit is about to hit a wall at warp speed or will be RMA'ed, or you can help me find out what I am doing wrong.
Check my sig for my specs. I can't install windows xp on this unit.  It almost always locks up when I am down to 3 to 9 minutes remaining in "saving settings"  I did get it to install once  but it locked up while installing SP1 and then it would not boot again. Repair install failed as well.  Could not even get into safe mode.  Last good configuration does not work either.
I have tried  swapping power supplies to no avail  Seems like a poorly designed product if it is that finicky with standard power supplies.  Newegg won't return it.  Finally hunted down a tech support number  for MSI and the techs could not understand english.  anyone got a number for english speaking tech support?
I have tried installing windows on this close to 20 times and cannot get it going.  I have tried various settings  for memory and cpu and tried even the lowest settings.   and event had to reset cmos more that once.  Shesh.  I should have gone with an EPOX! Could someone please prove me wrong about this board?

    Thanks Shanks,
But its D E A D.    Fans (including CPU) come on for 2 seconds, then shut off.  You have to unplug the power to even attempt again.  Went out and bought MADDOG 500W PSU ($99 USD) with 30A on +12V Rail and same results.
    Unplugged all drives. Same Result.
    Remove All Cards.  Same Result.
Removed board, Checked for Shorts or incorrect standoffs, Same Result.
Reset CMOS, Put MB with only CPU and Ram on piece of cardboard, Same Result.
MB by itself, stripped naked on cardboard with just PSU in 20 pin and 4 pin,  Same Result.
Its Dead Jim!  Its officially a dud.   10 hours of work on this. The most out of over 100 computers/servers built.
This bested an A+ Computer tech/Systems Engineer know for resurrecting "Dead" systems.
The originally PSU (Antec 400) is still working, actually powering my old EPOX 8rda+/Barton 2500  so that I can write this posting.
I'm suspecting Dendrite growth in the board causing a short or an NG component.  Actually while looking at the bottom of the PCB, I' noticing that the Masking is matted as if it a lot of masking was put on by a roller and not from the original process.
This may have been a repaired PCB in the first place.
Newegg states that the this board is warranted by the manufacturer only.  They got their $149
Posted review on this board regarding the +12V rail issues and reminding potential buyers about Newegg's "Warranted by Manufacturer only" and gave it 2 stars.  Lets see if NewEgg will post it.
Thanks for you help,  gonna RMA this before I am tempted to test its aerodynamic qualities as a "frisbee"

  • I think I bought a dead board:(

Wither that or it has major issues...
I bought a MSI NF3 Neo 2 Platinum off Ebay ( a powerseller with 99%). New but with only a 30 day warrenty (stupid me didn't install it till after (opteron 146 hadn't arrived) the warrenty expired).
Well the board was in new nick with orginal box, parts, drivers ect.
Installed it, all worked fine, formatted XP, upgraded the bios and all the motherboards features with Live Update.
Then problems started happening. The machine wouldn't even boot into bios, restting the battery fixed it but this happened 2-3 times then it would auto reset itself to default (grr). Seen the other thread about battery problems I bought a new Panasonic battery, but it made zero difference.
The board more often than not doesn't fire up, or it restarts after going through the check. Starting it with default options seems to be the only way to get it into windows...
Have I bought a dud? I'm screwed if I have, sold my trusty old KT600 Delta to fund this upgrade:(

ditto on the memory.  good luck on your RMA you will be without your board for a while.  when i though that my board was dead and i found out how long it was going to take, i was all but out the door to plop $95 down at the local store for the abit nforce (it was the week of finals).  how i got it to work was by reinserting all cards, installing an IDE drive to recover data, and then reinstalling windows.  i don't remember exactly why but until i got the ide drive nothing would work.  strange day.  must have been....

  • Dead Board or dead cpu?

i have ( had since it doesnt power on anymore) with the following
    AMd 64 3500
    K8N Neo2 platinum ( with latest bios)
    lDDR400 2x 512meg Legend memory
    Sata hard drive

    Albatron 6800GT.
The machine refuse to power on . Press the power button nothing. tried different power supply nothing.
Disconnected vid card, drive , evrything ...no power on, well it switches on for like a millisec and goes dead again. if I press pwoer button again nothing, if i unplug then switch it does the millisec again then dies again.
I installed that Msi core application was set on cool and quiet no overclocking. this morning boot the machine the fan was at low speed temp was around 60 degrees, i got a message from that cor center saying temp to high .do you want to shut down I did immediatly. reprted temp was 80 degrees.
tried to reboot no power on cant even see the blue light on the case main switch.
Tried to reset Cmos to no avail.
    Anyone has suggestion?
is the motherboard faulty or is it the cpu?

I sure hope you aren't another one of those people. After all we really don't have anything to do with MSI except we also purchased a board, got it to work, and decided to try to give back something to the community by offering free advice to those who appreciate it.
BTW, anybody who has RMAed 3 mobos purchased it from a vendor who allows anything to be returned whether it is actually bad or not. You may get a bad mobo now and then, but two in a lifetime is stretching things, and 3 means you should have bought a $60 million lottery ticket instead of a PC.
I agree the chances of this happening are ultra slim not to say impossible. Something else would have to be wrong with is set up. I guess I am frustrated by the all thing.
When I bought this machine I decided that with a high end system ( never having owned one bfr) I should have it speced and built for me> So I gave a list of conmponent to MSI delaler and said " ok these are my specs you make it with whatever will perform well and not give me grief and compatibility problems".  when i received the system I could not install winxp, the ram DDR400 was in the wrong slots.
That was rectified, everything worked ok ( actually I was very Happy with My system)
High frame rates in games , no freezes after install of SP1. was all good. I am not  saying outright ho this MSI 's fault. I am just trying to understand what went wrong, so it doesn't happen again. And i Understand that such new design cannot work 100% of the time and future Bios may aleviate problems experienced by users
When you get a failure you tend generally to blame the latest application or bit of hardware or driver you have installed ( it's human to jump to conclusion).
Lets state the facts in a rational way.
    1) my board died foir no apparent reason. ( so it seems I am waiting on the test results. but I assume it did it seems logical)
2)i did not add any hardware, or open the case system was performing great exept for the fact that the fans were going full speed all the time . so a quick look at msi web site + MSI update software, which by the way is great ( finds latest bios , utilitiy version etc all from 1 mouse click, all good)
I installed core centre 1.7 that supports my board, it seemed  to work too, fan speed seemed to decrease with temperature, was happy with it.
3 days later system is dead.
NB temp was never reported said N/a What does NB STANDS FOR?
    system temp reprted 7 degrees
core temp was between 47 and 60 reported ( 60 after a game 41 to 47 idling or little activity)
so beeing Human and beeing a brand new system I wonder If that core centre app could have reported wrong temperatures giving me a false sens of security while the system temp may have in fact be much higher than reproted? and consequently the motherboard or processor or both are now fried....

  • Another dead board???? please read

ok. first one was DOA. RMA's it got the new un yesterday. built the machine.... turn on PSU and nothing. nothing at all.... then i noticed a orange led flicker in the USB port then go out.... so must be getting some power then it all fires up BINGO! but no boot..... all leds are red on the D-bracket. turn off and then tuern on again and same thing.... turns on after about four flicks of the psu switch. so i thought i'd try another one i have laying around to see if it is the PSU.... same thing....
i am using this MY PSU jobbie.... 450w with 25amps on the 12v rail. please dont say PSU as its brand new and would mean another DOA!!!!
    cheers

about the grounding though..... i was a bit worried cos it looks like i have brass/copper 'risers' with my case. surley they conduct and shouldnt be mounted on?
That is not a problem unless there is something seriously wrong with your motherboard. (i.e. one or more of the solder points on the bottom of the board is shorting to the case)  In fact, those standoffs can actually improve the motherboards connection to ground, which is a good thing.  The little silver "pads" around the screw holes are connected to the earth or ground plane of the board.  So, "connecting" them to the case can actually improve the boards path to earth.

  • Found "Digital Audio" logic board, cpu & psu inside my Quicksilver ?

Recently got a quicksilver that "appeared" different to me . . .
Upon looking inside it's is a digital audio g4 swap (verified part #'s)
Logic board, 466mhz cpu and psu inside a Quicksilver case.
Any upgrades for this? does the dual 533 work in here?
Not sure what to do with this one, was hoping it was the sawtooth with the agp without adc (for testing flashed video cards without taping pins 3 & 11) . . .anyways

If you are just a TINY bit adventurous, get a QS CPU.
All you need to do is run a 12V line for fourth screw hole on CPU daughtercard.
Have a dig at XLR8yourmac.com, details used to be there...somewhere.
I once a QS 867 CPU and moved a resistor and made it a 933Mhz. I then ran over it with a rolling chair and knock a bunch of caps off.
Soldered them back on and sent it to a friend with a DA. He slapped it in and went on to do great things with that old DA. (like write the Mac Nvidia 6200 ROM)
The later QS 133Mhz bus CPUs had more cache, something like that. I know that the 867 was MUCH faster than a 733 I tried in it once.

  • Possible dead board?

Hi all, I have a K7N2 Delta-ILSR that refuses to post, or even initialize the display. Here are the system specs, including components I have tried swapping:
Antec SL400 PSU, with 38A@5V, [email protected], and 18A@12V
AthlonXP 2000+ palomino core (266 FSB)
    AthlonXP 2600+ Thoroughbred B core (333 FSB)
    Various radeon cards, (9600 pro, 9500pro, 9500np)
    1 256meg stick of generic PC2700 ram
The problem is, no matter the components(all of them or nothing except the board), nothing happens. The system will power on, but will not display video, nor give any beep codes. The D-bracket has lights 1 and 2 red, and 3 and 4 green (code for initializing IDE controller). It does not run through the normal cycle of testing other components, just turns on to that code on power-up. It has the same code no matter The system has been running fine up untill now. The probelm started when I put in the athlon 2600. The system that it came out of had the same symptoms (no video, no post) and I was testing the CPU to see if it was the chip or the motherboard. I put in the 2600, and tried to power up my K7N2, and was greeted with no video. I thought that the 2600 must be bad, and put my 2000+ back in. After that, i couldn't get anything. Is it even possible for a bad processor to fry a motherboard? I have removed the boa rd from the case and am testing it on its box to remove the possibility of shorts. Any ideas:confused2: ?

  • K8NGM2-FID - Dead board? :(

K, I´m building a new system as follows:
Athlon 64 3200 (Venice core, stock heatsink and fan)
    K8NGM2-FID
    2 Geil Ultra-X 512mb memory
    NEC 3540 DVD burner
    Samsumg 80gb IDE HD
    Windows XP SP2
I was upgranding from a socket A mobo, so I don´t have a PCI-e vid card. The processor was out of the box as well, so I can´t guarantee the problem is not with it, but everything points to the mobo. The mobo came with the 3.13 bios, but it shows a threatning "enginering sample" during post. So, I´ve assembled the system and put my old HD on it and turn the thing on, resulting in random freezes during boot up or just after entering Windows. There wasn´t even time to load the driver´s cd on it. Just to test it, I´ve copied everything out of my drive, formated it and tried to reinstall windows. Tried 6 times, none worked (the system frozed at random times). Used another HD, with the same result. Changed IDE cables. Still, nothing. Decided to flash the bios. Copied the 3.20 bios to the HD, used a MS-DOS boot disk and tried to flash it, resulting in a messenge of "unknown chipset vendor - error - chipset not supported" or something close to that.
So, I take the board came dead to me. Is there anything else I might be missing?
If this board came dead, I´m screwed. A friend of my in the US bought it in the US (Newegg) and shipped to me (I live in Brazil) and will probably cost more to RMA than to buy a new one :(
Anyone know if MSI can help me with that?

It probably costs as much as a new mobo to RMA it back to the US, and then back in here to Brazil (probably will need to pay Customs taxes again...). I just lost over $100 bucks (mobo+shipping) because MSI is throwing "engineering samples" at vendors. Good policy, btw!

  • 648 Max dead board???

    Hello,
I just purchased a "new" 648 Max board on Ebay.   I installed a new P4 2.4Ghz CPU, Pony 256Mb DDR-2700, Radeon 7000 and 175WD HD.   From the D-Bracket leds, it appears the board will not get past the second POST test (Early Chipset Initialization per the manual ?( ).
To debug the problem I have removed the video card and disconnected the IDE and floppy cables.   In addition, reset the CMOS(with power unplugged).   Any ideas what the "early chipset initalization" failure really means?
I have contacted the Ebay seller but they are saying change the RAM, power supply and processor.   Since the POST passed the CPU check but failed before the RAM check I do not beleive the processor or power supply are defective.   Any thoughts on this problem?   Is the board dead????
    Thanks,
    John

CPUs almost never die so that's pretty unlikely.
Thank you for the rapid feedback.   The MSI board fit perfectly in the new compusa case with new compusa 450w precison power supply.   The 6 brass standoffs were securely tightened to case with the 6 screws holding the MB in place.   I assume there were no plastic spacers needed to isolate the MB from the chassis?    I did purchase additional memory.   In addition, I will measure the voltage on each of the power supply pins.

  • 2nd dead board in 7 months....help!

2nd board, same symptoms.  The computer works fine for months at a time.  Then, i'll power off for the night, and when i come back in the morning, no power.  No fans, no boot, no power, no nothing.  I RMA'd my first board after about 5 months with this issue, received my current board, and the 2nd board refused to power up at all this morning.  This 2nd board has lasted less than six weeks, it seems.
I seriously doubt this is a surge issue, as my monitor, printer, and cable modem are all connected to the same surge protector and all are working properly.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have a K8N Neo Platinum, along with an Athlon 3000+, 768 meg of PC2800 ram (using all 3 dimm slots).  My power supply is a Rosewill, with 34A on the 12v line, 30a on the 5v line, and 28a on the 3.3 line.  I have all of this in an aspire x-dreamer case.  Graphics card is a 6800 GT from BFG.
To clarify, this rig has been working well since I received it as an RMA about 6 weeks ago.  It was working fine last night, as I logged a pretty long World of Warcraft session last night.  This morning, no power - period.  No fans, no lights, nothing.  Today i bought a power supply tester, and my power supply checks out - fans spin, lights up, all rails work, etc.  I removed my board from the case - there was nothing underneath the board (besides the risers) that could have caused a short.  My CPU is not burnt or cracked.  I had the same problem with my first board - worked fine, powered off, then the next morning nothing.  The prior board lasted about 6 months.
I have my rig, monitor, printer, and cable modem plugged into the same surge protector - all the other equipment is fine.  This, along with the fact that my power supply checks out, indicates to me that a power surge is not to blame.  Any help would be appreciated.  If you need more info, let me know.  Thanks.
