Dead click wheel

I have a 4th gen 40GB iPod and have done for 2 and a half years, it's recently become dodgy in that the click wheel often freezes and only unfreezes when I toggle the Hold switch on and off.
But it's now frozen up completely! Resetting doesn't work. It works in all other ways though!
Is it new iPod time I wonder or is there anything at all anyone can suggest?

Now I got the ipod to unlock (i don't know how my boyfriend said all he did was reset it which I tried but that didn't work for me) now it won't show up in itunes when I connect it and it says it is corrupted.I think I'm goin to just get a new one. but I can't figure if my computer corrupted it or something else. Didn't happen til I tried to restore it! IT *****

  • 4G iPods dead click wheel help

yesterday I was wiping down my ipod with isopropyl alchohol, usually that's what i use, but i think i used a bit more than usual on the napkin. later on went to use the pod, and the clickwheel wasn't letting me scroll. it only allowed me to select (FWD/RWD/SELECT/MENU/PLAY).
i thought maybe some alchohol got in there so I let it sit for a day maybe to dry up good, but it's still not working.
is my click wheel shot or can i fix this ?

Had the same problem. Tried everything. Took it to an apple store and one of their "genius"'s gave me a card for ipodmods.com. For 60 bucks and shipping, they're putting in a new click wheel. Free diagnostic also.
    Good luck

  • 'Mostly Dead' Click Wheel

I got my shiny new ipod last winter, and had many months of trusty musical service. This summer, however, my click wheel decided to die, almost. I started using a Belkin radio transmitter dock/charger in my car, which worked nicely for about a month. One day I took it off the dock and the click wheel was unresponsive. it still plays on the dock and such, butthe click wheel is pretty useless. The kicker is that, to my intense confusion, the menu+select function still works. Its the only thing I can get it to do. This led me to believe it was a software problem. Also suggesting this conclusion, the radio dock uses the ipod's processing to adjust the frequency of the transmitter and such, and since this dock seemed to spark the problem I figured perhaps the dock itself changed the firmware or something. I have restored the firmware and such a great number of times, and after a month of erratically trying every software solution I have been able to find/come up with, I'm at the end of my rope. If there is anything else that can be done short of taking it to apple, please let me know

  • DEADER Than Dead click wheel ipod

I have a first generation Ipod that died today. Actually I was listening to it this morning on my way to work. After work, i plugged my earphones and NOTHING just a blank screen Not even the low battery icon... nothing.
I thought i may have left it on during the day, so I plugged it into the charger and wall outlet... Nothing, (blank screen)
Tried to charge with my computer... nothing (blank screen)
tried to reset as per the 5 R's Nothing.
Is this what happens when the battery is gone?
    Any insight greatly appreciated.

If it's a 1st gen iPod (why are you posting in the iPod Classic forum?), then it may well indeed be time for a battery replacement.
Indeed your iPod battery has done well to last this long as the 1st gen iPod batteries were known to be suspect.
If you enter "iPod batteries" into a search engine like Google, you'll come up with a ton of hits listing replacements.

  • IPod 40 gb click wheel completely dead!

I bought an iPod (40gb click wheel) in September 2004 for the grand sum of £299 – so it isn’t even 2 years old! It has totally died. Firstly in June it refused to be identified by my Dell computer; then it corrupted a part of the software in my computer which identifies my DVD/CD drive. I had that fixed by Dell – thank goodness it didn’t do any further damage! As a result of not being recognised by my computer I was unable to add additional tunes to it. The iPod was still working but then started to make lots of noises. It then stopped working altogether and produced the folder with!. I phoned the support line in early July and was told that there are several articles on the web site which could help – I followed the recommendations and it still continued to try to re-boot itself. I was also told that getting it fixed would cost me £166 as the one year warranty had run out !!!! (Surely it should last longer than that – also I can buy something new which is more reliable for less than that!) The last stage was the final appearance of the apple logo, a black screen and now it is completely dead. It refuses to charge up with the battery and I’m absolutely livid. It doesn’t warrant being fixed. I hearby plan to return this lump of rubbish to Apple as I was on the verge of throwing it away but didn’t want to pollute the environment with whatever nasties lie within.

I've got the same problem mate. The clickwheel started to ge dead in places like around skip forward track area, (which was annoying to say the least.) But the other day it completely died, now it tries to start up showing the apple logo, then you can hear inside the hardrive spin up then a loud click then it tries this again about 5 times before showing the support website.
Ive probably had the ipod for about 2 years.
Annyoing since its a 40gb ipod and i've barely filled up 13gb. I might take it into see what the shop says but i sort of know its gonna be not worth repairing. Plus the video ipods are looking really good.

  • Ipod nana 3rd gen. menu is on screen, but click wheel is dead

Hi there, got a i-Pod nano 5 years old, never problems. Connect i-Pod with Mac book, appears no icon in itunes.
The menu screen is on, but the click wheel is completely dead. Still for 4 ours. Think menu screen will stop when battery is empty.
    Someone knows what to do?

Make sure the Hold swtich is not ON.  Even if it is OFF, try moving it to ON and then OFF again.
Try doing a Reset of the iPod

A Reset "reboots" the iPod.  It is not erased.

  • My 4th gen nano has locked up and the click wheel doesn't function, is it dead?

Hi my 4th gen nano stopped working, the screens ok with no error messages but the click wheel no longer functions other than reseting. I've set it back to default ok but still no good as it's stuck on the language page. Is it dead??
    Pete.

  • Click wheel issues, dead pixel

Ok, so I have issues with a very loose click wheel and a VERY obvious dead pixel, it's like bright purple compared to the rest of the screen and is very annoying while watching videos. I have a purple 16gb Are these issues that I can get an exchange on? I've babied this thing to death, I haven't dropped it or scratched it in any way. I'd like to just go in to the Apple store and exchange it, but does it matter where you bought it? Obviously I'm still within my Apple warranty, so do they just look it up with the serial number? I don't have my purchase receipt either. Any help would be wonderful, thanks in advance!

No, it does not matter. Make an appointment before going to the Apple store. The genius bar will help you. If you don't have an appointment, you could wait a long time.

  • Brought back click Wheel back from the dead

    Hello forum,
Newbie question from a newbie poster. I have a 40 gig Click Wheel that I had left for dead. I was able to get it working (hopefully not temporarily. My question for any knowledgeable user out there is; I haven't used this iPod since it failed on me 2 years ago and I've purchased a replacement 5th gen since. My desktop does not have the original install any longer for the the Click Wheel. What I want to do is re-install the install CD on a notebook running XP independent of my iPod/iTunes program on my desk top. If I do a fresh install on my notebook, will I be able to get the most current version of the software for my Click Wheel, if available on the support page? I noticed the current version I should be running in the help section and I would think it's more current than the one on the install disk. The other question is for my iTunes. Can I install the current iTunes version and not have to install any previous version? I'm assuming(hoping) that all bugs or fixes from previous upgrades are covered in the new version?
Sorry for the long winded post. I am anxious to get this iPod back to use.

ok, just give you a brief idea.
It used to have 2 software needed to install for the iPod, an iPod Updater and iTunes, but now we can install just one software i.e. iTunes and when we connect our iPod, it tells whether the software is the most update.
Try to download and install the latest version of iTunes here

  • Click Wheel on 40gig 4G sorta dead?

A few weeks ago, my clickwheel (40gig 4G, bought in July 2004) stopped responding randomly, for most of the day. That night, I ran the iPod updater (Win XP) and restored the software, which brought the ipod back to life.
Well, yesterday, the same thing happened, but I haven't been able to bring it back from the dead. The wheel is completely nonresponsive, but the buttons work fine.
I've tried the software restore, tried resetting it, tried letting it change and sit for a while, tried using it both plugged into power and unplugged.
    Any suggestions?

  • 20GB Click Wheel - is it dead?

The click wheel on my ~4 yr. old 20GB has stopped working. Immediately after I unplug from my computer, it will allow me to select a playlist, but then I cannot navigate forward, backward, etc. In order for me to hear songs from another playlist, I have to plug it into my computer, make my selection, then unplug.
It is also not holding much of a charge.
Is it time for a new model, or can this one be fixed?

If plugging it into the computer allows it to work, and you say it does not hold a charge, replacing the battery may fix the issue. Maybe the power is too weak when disconnected for the iPod to operate properly.
You can buy replacement batteries for about $10 including shipping on eBay. Be sure get one that has the plastic tools needed to open the iPod. Some listings show the mAh rating; higher means more capacity to store energy. Also, make sure to get the right battery for your model. Your iPod, if it has a +click wheel+ (and about 4 years old), should be a 4G or 4th gen iPod.
Here a helpful guide for repairing the iPod.

  • Dead iPod, broken click wheel

I have a 30gb 4th gen iPod photo. The click wheel does not work at all, although the hold will toggle. The screen will only turn on while it is on the power adapter. It will also show up and mount. As soon as the power is unplugged the iPod dies as if there is no battery at all installed. I have tried everything. Resetting is not possible b/c the click wheel doesn't work. I have restored it a couple of times, and mounted and erased the volume via OS X's disk utility.
Thinking it could be the battery and wheel ribbons disconected, I dissected the iPod. The owner stepped in and cracked the screen. dooh! So, what could be the problem? Doesn't seem software, having reset it.
Is this iPod destined to be a USB external hard drive?
    Thanks!!

I have almost the same problem, mine seems a little less serious. I plug my Ipod in and my computer recognizes it's there, I toggle the hold switch and it recognizes that, but the wheel doesn't work.
It was just completely turned off, and I toggled the hold switch, and all it did was bring up the black background and the apple symbol appeared, then it went on like it normally would, but the wheel doesn't work. I know that usually it wont turn onto the black background first, so somethings wrong, I just have no idea what it is.

  • My 4th Generation click wheel 40 GB iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes.

    Hi There,
The title actually says it all..
(My 4th Generation click wheel 40 GB iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes 7.4.2, although the iPod works fine.. iTunes keeps saying to reset it, but I don't see why I should)
The iPod seems to work just fine, so I'm not in a big hurry to erase all my songs audio books etc..
I am thinking that this is a problem with Macintosh iTunes version 7.4.2, from what I'm seeing, but how should I proceed?
    Many thanks for any help.
    Eric

Sounds like a dead battery. Take it into your local Apple store/Genius bar and see if there is anything they can do for you.  Another option is to send it in to a third party repair company who can replace the battery at a pretty low cost.

  • Battery/Click Wheel Crisis!

Ok i have a referbished ipod mini 1st generation. the first one had some problems and now it seems this one they gave me has even more! The battery lasts about 3 hours max. and on occassion it'll be dead and then I'll plug it in and it claims it's done charging! That was my first problem and all of the sudden I'm having click wheel issues. If the back light goes out the click wheel will stop responding! My ipod died a minute after being charged for an hour. I pressed Select and Play (a friend told me this is how you can really see the battery status) and then all of the sudden a check mark shows up and "It's ok to remove your ipod" or something like that shows up and at the top it says enable disk use which i didn't! And now the click wheel won't respond.. at all. Can someone please help me or atleast tell me what went wrong? Thank you.

You should try here if you want a replacement battery (or somewhere like it).

There are many cheaper and better batteries out there than the ones Apple provide. Google 'iPod batteries'.
