Dead drive...in the middle of the mac (mbp)...li'l he'p please

stuck in china and temporarily using an ancient computer unit due to mbp hd crash and burn...HELP!
tried searching "magic block" and there were 4 matching but none of the links will show onscreen on this ancient piece (can't even read google mail this thing is so old
can't raise anything on my mbp (flashing file with ?)...stone dead
diagnostics suggest that there is a long piece of code missing or inaccessible in "magic block"
is there a way to retrieve data from fried harddrive, or some other known work-around (the issue is apparently known to some)
went to my "gurus" but they are not hip, to this particular issue at least
went to authorized service center
they say they can replace hd but need my old one in exchange...what's up with that
do folks really just send bad harddrives back to apple with personal and sensitive data on them?!!
your thoughts?
this issue is apparently addressed in some form already on this forum; even if you could just provide hotlinks to threads relevant to "magic block," i'd be most appreciative (i just can't get the search to display those links on this lame machine)
my mbp is still under hardware warranty, but no apple care pkg
many thanks in advance

Do you have , or can you obtain, a Tiger (10.4.10 or later) or Leopard DVD, micbojangles?
If so, try booting from that by holding down the C" key while starting up with the disc in the machine.
Run Disk Utility from the menubar and see if it can "see" and "repair" the drive.
If it can "repair" it, you are home. If not, then , as long as the drive can be seen, you should be able to do an "Archive and Install" of your OS from the DVD , using the settings that allow you to keep your data / settings etc. If even this isn't possible then you are going to have to have access to an external drive.
What were you actually using to run these "diagnostics"?
If you can get hold of an external drive, and install OSX 10.4.10 or later on it, there is a good chance that you would be able to recover the contents of your drive using Prosoft's Data Rescue . As long as the drive hasn't suffered a hardware failure it will usually get back most stuff, regardless of how badly corrupted the drive directories etc are.
(One other word of warning - don't trust any diagnostic results obtained while running in FW TD mode from a PPC based mac. Chances are that they will be incorrect. If you are going ton hook up in FW TD mode to another Mac make sure itis an Intel model when doing such things)
Cheers

I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?

In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.
Holler if you need specifics on how to do each. This was just an executive summary.

I have ordered a 800 firewire to 800 firewire cable and am hoping to use the target mode option to copy files from the MBP.
    Is this possible?
    Hope so!
Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thanks Ogelthorpe.
Just bought an enclosure to try that also.
Hoping the MBP isn't really dead but just feigning death
    Fingers crossed.

What is the best external hard drive for the MAC Book Pro with Retina?
I was looking at WD MY PASSPORT FOR MAC and Toshiba. I want something that will work best with time capsule! Suggestions on the best external hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!!

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.
For 1 TB drives PlotinusVeritas gives some great suggestions here:

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H9378ZM/A/lacie-2tb-usb-30-porsche-design-p923 3-desktop-hard-drive
    $130
A 2 TB drive just as good for only $92.

Not sure which driver you mean when you say "the driver in the Mac's list". Apple does not provide a driver for this device, so if you mean one of the default printers that are included with 10.6, like the Generic Postscript or Generic PCL, then these will only work if the optional PS or PCL print kits were installed in the machine. Given your inability to print then it would seem that you have neither kit installed. So this would require you to install the Canon UFR2 driver, which you can obtain via this link.
With the UFR2 driver installed, you add the printer using IP > LPD. Enter the IP address of the iRC2380, leave the Queue name blank and change the Name to iRC2380. Leave the Location field blank and in the Print Using menu, browse to the "Canon iR C2380/2550 UFR II (UK)". Click OK and then Add to complete the queue creation. You should now be able to print. Please reply if it does not work.

  • Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. HELP!!

Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. I know that the folders that have the problem were not transferred to the hard drive via a photo transfer application (I have a Canon camera) but I simply copied them out of the photo card and onto my old PC.
Is there some way I can open these pictures on my Mac? They work fine on a PC.

    Thanks for your reply.
The files don't open in preview either. In preview I get the error message 'The file "xxxx_xxx.jpg" could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize'. The folders with these un-openable pictures do not even get imported into iPhoto. When I try to import them I get an error message about the files being unreadable.
The color profile information on the un-openable files is not visible but I see that all the other files from my old drive are RGB.

  • Is my drive dead or is the Mac Hardware Test lying?

Sorry if this seems a double post from the OS X Snow Leopard forum, but realized maybe it would be better to post here.
I was having huge problems with re-occurring "Invalid Node" errors and other disk corruption - I would restore from a back and the problem would be gone - but return a day or two later, three or four times in the last week.
Well I ran the Extended Hardware Test earlier today twice... both time I got the same errors....
    "4HDD/11.40000004:SATA(0,0)"
Bascially it said there is a problem with the HDD - I just put this drive in like 10 days ago... So I called the store they said if it is defective I could bring it back. Great! I thought... so I zeroed the drive tonight to ensure there is no data is on it... and for kicks after the 2 hour zeroing I ran the test again... this time there were no errors!!!
Is this hardware testing the 'Hardware' because I am thinking that if the file system was corrupted shouldn't that be a software issue and the hardware test should ignore it.
Now I am wondering... do I try using this drive again now that it is zeroed and clean - or do I return it and re-install my original 160Gb drive that came with the Mac Book (which by the way never had this problem).... is this disk really dying or is the Hardware Test pulling my leg... do I trust the drive or the Hard Test?
    What do you guys/gals think?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Thanks Dave,
I was thinking maybe I will just get my $$ back and go back to the Fujitsu drive that came with the Mac book till my iPhoto and iTunes libs get huge and then look at a larger driver then.
Or get a diff brand... this was a Western Digital - perhaps they are not the best out there.

  • Being able to 'Read & Write' on an external hard drive on the Mac

    Hi there,
I can't seem to be able to add things to my external hard drives on my MacBook Pro. I can with my USB stick but not with the larger external hard drives. Could someone help me change the permission settings to allow me to 'Read & Write' rather than just 'Read Only'.
    Thanks
    Nadia

How is this drive formatted? If it is NTFS then it is read-only. In order to use it on the Mac you will have to repartition and reformat the drive. On the other hand if it is properly partitioned and formatted for the Mac and the drive has become read-only then there is a different solution.
    For the first alternative:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    For the second alternative:
Fix No Access Permissions on HD.

  • Swapping out internal hard drives within the Mac Pro

I'm thinking the answer is a huge NO but was curious to know for sure. Is it safe to switch out internal drives from within a Mac Pro while the machine is up and running? Meaning if the drive is ejected from the machine by unmounting the drive in the finder window can one then physically pull out the drive tray while the machine is still on? The same question applies to popping another Mac formatted drive into an empty slot (say from another mac pro). Kind of like popping in a thumb drive to a USB port. Just curious. Thank you.

Oh, absolutely NOT! Those slots are not designed for hot swapping hard drives. Doing so will most likely damage the drive, the computer, or both.

  • On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive, On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7 without the optical drive

On the mac mini 2011 how can I run windows 7pm bootcamp without an optical drive.  I watch lots of football on sop cast and other such windows based programmes but can't work out how to do it.

Actually Windows can be installed and booted from an external drive if the drive is connected eSATA (external SATA), since the drive is treated as if it's an internal HDD. I used the same method previously to dual-boot from 2 different HDD instead of partitioning.
Most PC motherboards come with them as standard so it's pretty much plug and play but I don't recall seeing a recent Mac with eSATA connectivity though, so that might not be an option for you.

  • Can i use my G5 drive in the Mac Pro?

    Hi.
I have a 2005 G5 with a western digital serial ata drive with all my audio on it.
I also have an airport card which id like to put in the mac pro.
Can i put them in my new mac pro which i should get in the next few days?
Im not sure if there is a faster airport now and i should buy that?
    Cheers, Benji

Sometimes it is okay, but in the end, you are much better off to clone the drive, erase format so it has a GUID partition scheme. Really.
As for 4 yr old WD drive, keep it for an emergency boot drive or something. I'd say put it in USB/FW case but not everything is happy in FW land lately. Pick up some new SATA drives, they are more than 2x faster, and $100 for 1TB.

  • Can I install OS X 10.6 on a USB drive after the Mac HD dies?

I don't have a bootable backup HD for my Mac, nor a complete backup copy of my HD.
So, if the Mac hard drive suddenly fails one day, would I be able to still turn on the Mac, plug in a USB drive, insert the OS install CD, and install the OS on the USB to use the Mac???

Ok, thanks Can the USB be one of those cheap small flash drives (16GB or so)?

  • How do I create a new folder in my hard drive - free agent go flex drive - on the mac book air?

    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.
