Dead eMac Fan, USB resurrection?

Hi,
The fan has died on my beloved eMac. The local Apple specialist wants about $700 to fix it. (They claim they need to replace the '61-2850 Display/Analog Assembly, Northern Hemisphere' because, while the fan itself is fine, it's supposed to receive power via this part and that Apple does not supply the specific component on the assembly that powers the fan alone.)
I know the computer is not worth $700 but I would like to keep it for my kids to use as, other than the fan, the thing runs with no problem.
I'm wondering if there might be a relatively easy way to disconnect the fan from the blah, blah assembly and connect it to another power source, possibly even a USB port.
Does this sound doable? (I have experience swapping drives and ram on various macs.) What equipment would I need?
Can anyone think of a better solution? I've seen the assemblies in question on eBay for over $400, so with shipping to Europe this does not seem like a good solution.
Thanks

Hey Mcfugu,
The big problem is finding a power source for the fan as from what I've been told, the fan itself is not the problem. The problem is with the board that powers the fan and the internal speakers. (I had to hook up USB speakers to get sound.)
Some of this doesn't make much sense to me.
So supposedly the speakers are powered from the same board that powers this fan? The Northern Hemisphere?
Here's the procedure for the symptom
"No sound from either internal or external speakers"
From the service manual...
"1. Verify volume setting is correct in system preferences.
2. Verify the computer is not set to “mute”. Press the mute key on the Apple keyboard.
3. Reset parameter RAM. Press Command-Option-P-R during startup.
4. Boot from Apple Hardware Test (hold down the “C” key at startup). Run both quick and extended tests.
Proceed based on any error codes given. See AppleCare Knowledge Base article 112125 - Service
Diagnostics Matrix for Error Code information.
5. Test the computer with known-good headphones. Do you get sound? If yes, go on to step 6. If no,
replace the main logic board.
6. Verify that the speaker cable is connected.
7. Replace the speaker assembly.
8. Replace the logic board.
No sound from the headphones
1. Verify the problem with known-good headphones.
2. Verify the computer is not set to “mute”. Press the mute key on the Apple keyboard.
3. Verify volume setting is correct in Mac OS X system preferences. If the preferences are set correctly,
replace the logic board.
4. In Mac OS 9, check the Sound Control panel, Speakers tab. When headphones are connected, a
headphone icon will be present. If the headphone jack is malfunctioning it may indicate that
headphones are connected when none are connected. In this case, replace the logic board."
Hmm no mention of the PAV eh? either north or south.
Did you check the headphone output? It can be the cause of no sound to either internal or external speakers since there's a cutout circuit in there.
I've only got a 1 GHz taken apart here but the fan plugs into the front of the logic board. It doesn't make sense to me that there is a split power supply in your eMac.
The fan runs off of 12VDC off the logic board and if you have all other functions esp hard drive power (12VDC and 5.5 VDC) then the PAV is got to be OK. The eMac is constructed similar to the early G3 machines in that they have a PAV, Down Converter and Logic Board assemblies. It seems to me the fact that there's a Northern and Southern Hemisphere is due to the room needed for the extended CRT. So in construction they had to split the PAV.
The fan has 3 leads red-+12, black- -12, yellow - control (I think I've got one here and can verify that)
Unfortunately the Repair Extension Program finished a few months ago.
If you take the rear housing off mind the power connector. Only pull the housing back 4 inches before disconnecting the lead to the power button. If you take it off all the way you'll destroy that connector.
If you want to investigate further you can email me.

My ipod 32gb 1st generation battery went totally dead because the usb cable was defective.  I have since replaced the cable but now itune will not launch automatically as it did before and windows xp does not recognize it.  Nonetheless it is charging.  However can i resolve these issues bearing in mind that i am not tech savvy?

have since replaced the cable but now itune will not launch automatically as it did before and windows xp does not recognize it.
Try disabling a/v software and turn off the Firewall on your PC.
    Disable antivirus software
    Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off
Then connect the iPod to your computer. Launch iTunes. If your computer still won't recognize the iPod check out this article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Once your iPod is functioning again, with it connected to your computer, launch iTunes. Select the iPod under Devices in the source list on the left.
Select the box next to:   Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected
That way iTunes should open automatically when you connect your iPod to your computer.
And iTunes / Preferences - Devices. You can have your iPod sync automatically whenever it's connected from the Devices pane.

  • Fix for Dead eMac Display

I found a fix for my dead psychedelic eMac:
    1. Reset the PMU (explained in the battery replacement screen)
    2. Reset the PRAM on the first start (Option-Command-P-R)
    3. Hold the Power Button down on the first start. Listen for the loud tone.
This worked for my dead eMac. I had tried everything. It was dead for two months. Sometimes I'd get weird psychedelic colored vertical lines.
The Apple Store looked at it and wanted to replace the Logic Board for $700. I said "Thanks, but No".
PS. Unfortunately, I got so frustrated that I bought a new Windows machine. I'm ashamed now. What a waste.

Given Macfixit is an independent entity from Apple and has a tendency to hide many of its repairs behind a pay only site, I would printout their suggested repair, and take it with you when you next visit an authorized repair shop and ask them if they can see whether they think that repair would fix your machine.

  • Emac Fan wont stop running

How do I get my emac fan to stop running? Computer is working fine, but fan is on constantly and the noise is driving me crazy.....

The eMac doesn't have temperature-based fan control like notebook computers. It's designed to run all the time unless you put it to sleep. Our eMacs have served next to my G4 tower; the tower mostly masks the noise from the eMac.
The third-party fan control utilities I found on VersionTracker list nothing for a G4. The oldest processor they support is a G5. Maybe someone else has another source.
With a large CRT monitor plus all the other heat-producing computer parts sharing the same case, I would be reluctant to do anything to slow the fans on either eMac we have.

  • EMac Fan Noise - Zalman FanMate 2 Installation Help Needed

    Hello everyone,
I'm after some help on how to install a Zalman FanMate 2 to my eMac to reduce the fan speed and therefore noise.
I purchased a Zalman FanMate after reading a previous thread on the discussion board on how to reduce fan noise. There was helpful info and links on the discussion, however the installation instructions (which included switching and soldering some wires) related to installation of the discontinued FanMate 1. The FanMate 2 I had purchased has slightly different wiring. Unfortunately the link on the discussion for installation of FanMate 2 is broken, and I can only seem to find conflicting instructions on the web on which wires to solder to which.
So, here's how the wires are currently arranged if the FanMate 2 is plugged into the eMac:
    FanMate (F) to eMac Fan (M): Yellow>Red, Red>Black, Black>Yellow
    FanMate (M) to eMac Power (F): Black>Green, Red>Black, White>Yellow
Having already unsuccessfully tried one suggested rewiring combination (the first FanMate 2 popped and gave an exhausted puff of smoke), I'm a little cautious and would really appreciate some sound advice before I do some serious damage.
    Many thanks in advance, folks.
    Best wishes,
    Ewan

    Hello Jon,
I don't thnk that model of fan drive is compatible.
If it looks different. I'd take it back.
There are fan add-ons and software that can tweak this issue(I went with software).
There is an article here: http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html
Scroll down and you'll see the guy did similar to you with the Zalman.

I tried to connect it to iTunes 8 and got this message.
Itunes could not connect to the ipod because an unkown error occured OX E8000001

Well the answer is YES! It can work with USB 1.1. For some reason the iTouch just needed to try to connect a few times before it finally did.

  • Km2m problem - dead (no fans, no led, nada)

    Hi there!
After reading problem 12 pages descriptions of KM2M problems without
finding a solution, I have to ask here... (I'm not a newbie, assembled
many PC's before without any problems)
    Mainboard: KM2M Ver 1.0
CPU: Duron 1800 MHz 133 FSB (Applebred?)
    CPU-FAN: Spire SPA04B4 WhisperRock IV
    RAM: 1 NoName PC133 SDRAM, 1 Apacer PC133 CL3 SDRAM, both 256 MB
    DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-113
    CD-RW: LG 8526B
    Harddisk: IBM 85 GB
    Floppy: NEC
    The PSU: LC-Power 350 W
    +3.3 V --> 26A
    +5 V --> 30A
    +12 V --> 15 A
    (Values MAX DC OUTPUT)
    Combined PEAK OUTPUT 3,3 and 5 V --> 210W
No other PCI or AGP cards attached.
The system will not boot, the fans are not working, completely dead. (In fact, this is a completely new mainboard, bought yesterday)
    - The CPU is correctly inserted, a little heat sink paste just on the
    DIE, fan is correctly mounted
    - FSB jumper is @ 133 MHz
    - both power plugs are mounted correctly
    - no additional metalclips in the case (also tried the antistatic
    bag method without luck)
    - resetting CMOS and battery-removing didn't help
    - power switch connector is plugged in, changing polarity didn't help
(I tried basically everything that's described in the sticky troubleshooting guide)
IMPORTANT: Noticed something, when pulling out the 20-pin ATX connector,
the CPU fan begun to work. Pushing in the connector again a little bit
the fan worked again, but when the plug is completely inserted, te fan
    stops working! Maybe this helps...
I don't want to return the mainboard if it's my fault.... :-)
    What else can I try?
    Regards,
    Bálint

    Hi!
The connection is alright, no additional metal pins (checked it again and again).
OK, I tried every possibility now, and I would like to thank you very very much for everything. But IMHO the board must be dead itself... I'll call MSI Germany tomorrow, hopefully they can help me with a new board...

  • Re-using HD from dead eMac

My trusty eMac died but the internal hard drive is OK and I've removed it. I'd like to install it in a firewire enclosure to use it as an external drive for another Mac. The drive is ATA/IDE Hitachi Deskstar 60GB 7200rpm. Apple HDD firmware 2002.
Where can I get a firewire case and what do I need to look out for in terms of compatability etc? I now use a Mac Mini 1.42Power PC running OSX 10.4.8 and I also have a G4 1.25 Dual processor power PC running OSX 10.2.8. Would I be better off installing it as a 2nd internal drive in the G4?
Are there slave master issues for either option?
Mac Mini 1.42 Power PC 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Mac Mini 1.42 Power PC 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Just about any enclosure will work, just making sure the enclosure takes 3.5" drives and it is for Parallel ATA drives which is what you have. This is the most common type/size of enclosure. These days you do not see to many Firewire only enclosures and when you do they tend to be expensive. What you find now are either USB2 enclosures or Combo enclosures (supporting BOTH USB2 and Firewire ports). Personally I prefer the Combo enclosures since I like to hook up hard drives via Firewire rather than USB2 so I am willing to pay the slight premium for them. A USB only enclosure will run about $18 on up where as many Combo enclosures start at around $25-$28 and up.
Here is the last one I purchased...
    http://tinyurl.com/ncgbg
which is $32 shipped and can be used to boot your PowerMac via Firewire if you have a bootable system on it.
But that same place has a few other choices that are a few bucks less for Combo drives many with free shipping when ordering $25 or more. They also have a few USB only enclosures for $18+ but again, for the ones with free shipping, it only applies to an order of $25 or more.

  • Will new iPod range work with oldish eMac with USB 1.0?

I've eventually come to the conclusion that my iPod no longer works. Its a 3rd gen click, but when you turn it on it clicks and hums and Ive read that this means the hard-drive is fecked...Can only confirm this to be pretty the case?
So basically...after realising this I checked out the new range on apple website and noticed that all of them require USB 2.0. Does this mean that apple now wants me to upgrade my computer as well as my iPod?! I have an oldish eMac which only has firewire and USB 1.0 ports.
Would really appreciate it if someone could tell me whether the new range will work with my connections. Or whether I will have to get older iPod via Ebay for example.
    Many thanks

Thanks, does that meant that the new range doesn't use firewire at all? Crap if thats the case.

  • EMac Fan Problem

    Hi there.
I have a curious problem with an eMac. The exhaust fan does not spin at all. This is even after replacing it with a new one that I purchased. I have checked and re-checked all the connections between the fan assembly and the machine itself and everything looks fine. Is there something I'm missing? I replaced the fan as I could see it wasn't spinning, plus the Hardware Test CD gave this error code: 2FAN/2/1:MLB
The reason I had to suspect something was wrong with this machine was that when netbooting it would get so far (Connect to the server, start to download the image) then power itself off completely. So I assumed it was overheating.
Anyone have any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? Or if I am? Is this perhaps indicative of a deeper problem?
    Thanks in advance!

Tough to say for sure, but sounds like either the thermistor that measures the heat in the computer or the speed control circuit is shot. Unfortunately I do not know where either is in the machine.
As a work around, you could run +12V (assuming it is a +12V fan) from the power supply to the fan connector directly so that fan is full on all the time. Might be kind of noisy, but at least then you would have cooling. It might be your fan runs full on most of the time anyway, so the noise may not be any worse than usual.
Did you test the old fan? If you still have it, put the proper voltage across its leads and see if it runs.

  • Noisey eMac fan solved with Zalman fanmate

I bought a Zalman fanmate 2 a year ago but I was to scared to install it. However I bit the bullet recently and finally tried it out. It is the best upgrade I could have done. I have the fan operating now at about half speed and it is whisper quiet. Whereas it was a howling monster before. I was about to upgrade to a G5 imac just because I couldn't stand the noise any longer. But now I don't have to, which is good because, as a graphic designer I prefer the CRT.
In my house with the ambient temperature of 71 degrees the exit temperature at the fan was 95 degrees. After turning the fan speed down to the point where I could barely hear it the exit temperature only went up to 99 degrees.
Therefore I can highly recommend this solution for noisey emacs.

Hi Jon, already replied to another post related to this but thought would double my chances of you seeing it. How hard was it to alter the fanmate? The noise on my emac is driving me round the bend.
