Dead firewire Ports & PCI Card

Well here i go. Today I hooked up my firewire external drives. I am in the process of cleaning and reorganizing. The drives did not mount. The deck was next to be hooked up and is not recognized?
Okay so next its the forums alot of info. too much for me. Zapped the pram rebooted numerous times. Shut down let everything rest unplugged everything rebooted and plugged everthing in, nooo go. One of the LaCie fwdrives does work in my Mac Book Pro, so I realize it is not the drive or the cable. Reset the pmu button. NADA.
Okay so now its off to Staples for that Belkin PCI Firewire card. Installed it nothing. The system profiler recognizes it but the drives don't mount, and Disk Utility does not see the drives. Called Belkin tech support and I don't even want to go there, no we diffently do not want to talk about that.. anyone had a similar problem I would greatly like to hear what you have to say. It is real obvious that I would like to have the ports....BOTH FW PORTS THAT SHIPPED WITH THE APPLE G 5 work, however I quess that will not be and it seems everyone just settles for the PCI workaround, I will also if I can get it to work.. Thanks. I'll need the practice for when my USB ports LUNCH...

Regarding having to disconnect every FW connection before hooking up a Canon (GL2 in my case) I'd figured it was my Echo AudioFire 2 FW audio box that was causing the strin on the system, but as you quite rightly pointed out it's the Canon.
I just got back from buying a no brand "IEEE 1394A Card" from a local PC centric store and hooked the AudioFire up to it thinking it would end the problem, but as soon as I connected the GL2 the connection to my 1TB external LaCie was severed and my Lexar Professional card reader started flashing on and off (maybe it was flashing in sympathy with the pulses coming from the GL2 - a communication signal of some kind).
Anyways, I now have the following connections which is working great:
1. Firewire PCI card hooked up to the GL2 exclusively
2. Built-in G5 Firewire (rear FW400 port) hooked up to the FW breakout cable on my Cinema Display.
2a. (Cinema Display FW400 port 1) to Ext 1TB Lacie
2b. (Cinema Display FW400 port 2) to Lexar Professional card readers' FW port 1 and then from port 2 to the Echo AudoFire 2.
The only downside to this is that I was hoping to start using an iMac as my main machine but I can't now because I need two FW busses, and when I upgrade to a new Mac Pro I'll have to use up a PCI slot for the FW card.
I'm surprised Apple's pro machines only have the 1 FW bus, and even stranger how FW400 and FW800 share the same bus!!!

  • Trouble installing SIIG Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card

I bought a Siig Firewire 800 3-port PCIe card. I am unable to install it on my G5 Quad 2.5 ghz dual 500 GIG HD PCIe because there isn't a power port to plug into. I called Apple & they said no can do. Siig support said I could plug into my "DVD drive". I rechecked the super drive & confirmed that there is not a forr pin in line power port. I have read postings of other G5 (dual processor) owners using this card. Is my problem unique to the G5 quad or is there a solution? Please help John

Most of the time if a card or something requires power, the vendor should have included a "Y-splitter" with it so that you can run DVD and card.
I thought PCIe would have more than enough, too. I tend to avoid SIIG though, having seen too many issues on various cards. They use to use ACard but seem to be branching out on their own.
There are some other FW800 PCIe. I think www.barefeats.com either did or was going to review a few. And of course OWC would have a list.
Not sure it will help, can't hurt, but I have seen and heard where a drive wouldn't mount but did after reset nvram was done. Something that ATTO recommends when changing PCI cards (like UL5D).
Oh -one thing - does the LaCie show up connected to native FW800 port okay?

  • Firewire 400 pci card:  help

A friend of mine installed a Firewire 400 pci card to expand my firewire capability-- it worked for 2 months and just died. Has anyone had this problem? Please share your thoughts and advice. Does this mean I have to buy another one, merely 2 months of use?
    Thanks

    Hi k chen:
Can you give us some more detail about your computer, and its age, and the name and manufacturer of the firewire card? With that we maybe able to help

  • EMAC 1.2 mg 2 Dead firewire ports

EMAC 1.2 mg, 2 dead firewire ports neither will mount, but have power

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) by removing the user access panel and locating the push button switch to the right of the drive connector and just below the right end of one of the two DIMM slots on your logic board. To do so…
    • shut down the computer
    • unplug all cables EXCEPT the power cord from your machine but not from a grounded AC source
    • place it face down on a stable, level surface
    • remove the user access door by removing the center screw which mounts it to the frame
    • equalize your electrical potential to that of the machine by touching the exposed metal case
    • once you have done so, remove the power cord from your machine
    • do not move around, which would change your electrical potential
    • press the PMU reset button ONCE and once only, as second and subsequent presses can crash the PMU itself, and rapidly drain your backup battery
    • wait 10 seconds, replace the AC cord and power on the computer using the case mounted switch
Replace the plate, place the machine upright, and reconnect your keyboard and mouse.
Plug in a FireWire device to see if it appears in the Finder as a mountable volume and verify this by using the Disk Utility if it is a storage device.
If your issue has been resolved, it is the PMU reset which has done so. If you have not but still have power available at the FireWire interconnect socket, then your FireWire PHY controller is likely damaged, a condition which requires a logic board repair or replacement.

  • Is my Firewire 800 PCI card fried?

A couple of days ago my G4 with Sonnet dual 1.8 Ghz processors woke up. There was an immediate warning on my screen in five languages that something bad had happened. I rebooted and all was OK, except my G-RAID 320 gig wouldn't mount. I had it connected via Firewire 800. There was nothing I could do to get it on my desktop, including swapping cables. It shows up fine if I connect via Firewire 400.
I just tried it again after installing Leopard, and it still won't mount via FW 800. My thoughts are that my LaCie FW 800 PCI card is blown and I'll need to replace it. Any other ideas?

Hi! Try resetting the pmu. Press the button once with all external cables unhooked. Tom
Here's an example of the button location.

  • Dead firewire port

Seems my firewire port suddenly died. I tried plugging in my iSight and it's not detected, and I tried a firewire hard drive as well, and that is not detected.
Any steps I should try on my own before contacting Apple for APP repair?

After installing firmware password protection, I found out that it disables your firewire ports.
So I disabled the password, but my firewire ports are still dead, i can use targetmode, but my mini never mounts, I tried connectiong isight and it didnt work also, I did some research on this and found the code that checks the firmware for this setting.
is located on the file IOFireWireController.cpp
it looks to me as if the security-mode is set to none, once it was set to anything else other than "NULL" value it will still disable the firewire. so i tried to set it to NULL also but no luck. My Firewire is dead, and also my other laptop that had a firware password has the same problem. I've tried:
    altopt+of
    setenv security-mode none.
    rest-nvram
    reset-all
    return.
    Then
    reset the PMU.
    but nothing.

  • Which firewire/usb pci cards are VERIFIED to work with a G5 2.7 Ghz?

I have a Powermac g5 2.7 Ghz, and need to add a firewire/usb combo card for the external peripherals I have.
I have the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL video card, which blocks one of the pci slots. I am aware I can get separate usb and firewire cards, but do not want to that. I would have to replace the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL video card.
I have seen various brands advertised, but sure which ones will ACTUALLY work.
I am having trouble finding any information here about a firewire/usb combo card that has actually been verified to work.
ANY reliable info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Glen, the Combo FW/USB cards seem to have disappeared in the last year or two, my workaround would be a FW card & powered USB Hub..

  • Dead firewire ports

I have an iMacG5, 2.0ghz, 17", last model without iSight, that has been working fine, till the Apple Care Warranty expired. Sometime since that, the firewire has stopped working. Is there any way to get it re-started short of a logic board transplant?

Try [this|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338] and these as well:
    Zapping the P-RAM:
After the startup tone, hold down <commandd><option><r> until 3 additional startup tones are heard, then release the 4 keys.
Or try an Open Firmware reset:
After the startup tone, hold down <command><option><o><f> until the text screen is visible. When text can be entered, type the following commands, followed by the <return> key (there are no space characters in each command):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
reset-all (the Mac will boot up after this command is entered)

  • G4 firewire port is damaging external drives

My 400 MHz G4 tower has suddenly started killing the firewire ports on my external drives (four in total). I found out I have what is known as a "killer firewire port". Has anyone else ever heard of this and If so can I fix this problem by simply installing a new firewire port PCI card on my G4?

    Hi
If a firewire port or connector is poorly manufactured or excessively worn due to lots of plugging and unplugging, it is possible for a power pin in the port to connect to a data pin in the connector, frying whatever's attached to the other end of the cable. Assuming the problem lies with the port and not the connector, a PCI card should solve the problem. I'm not sure whether you've tried using different cables to rule out the connector. You could see how much you can waggle the connector in the port (with everything switched off at the wall socket).

  • Recommendations? USB 2.0 & Firewire PCI card for MDD Dual Boot G4 (1.25 Ghz

Can anyone recommend a good USB 2.0 and Firewire combo PCI card? (at least 3 USB 2.0 ports and 2 FW) for my G4 MDD Dual Boot- 1.25 Ghz)?
I have an Orangelink+ Micro USB 2.0/FW PCI card from the days of OS 9- that's supposed to be USB 2.0 under OS X, but isn't (it shows up as max 12/mbps in System Profiler). I'd like to get an external Hard Drive and most of them are USB 2.0 now.
    Another question:
Under system profiler, it shows that I have one USB 2.0 port. I'm assuming it's an internal port, because all of the external ports show transfer rates of 12mbps. Is this a correct assumption?
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • PCI Card doesn't fit?!

    Hey guys,
I need firewire 400 for my audio mixing desk. I was advised to not buy an adaptor and use the current Firewire 800 ports, but to instead buy a Firewire 400 PCI Card.
Well, I did that and it doesn't fit. Obviously I have made a mistake. Would I be correct in saying the full length card I have is PCI and I need to buy one that is PCI Express?
Any Firewire 400 PCI Express card I can see online seems to be very short and not contain enough gold connections for the rather long looking PCI-e slots inside my mac pro.

    A little help please?

Yes I did. I forgot about getting back to you, I am very sorry. I have been extremely busy and stressed trying to start up this new business. This recent hickup is one I really didn't need and can not afford to repeat so I need to make sure I am getting the correct product this time.
Thanks for the website link but I am in the U.K.
Its proving very hard to find any PCI Express Firewire 400 cards. I find a lot of cheap ones by Startech. I have no idea if that company is any good. Perhaps this is something that I do not need to spend a lot of money on?
The apple store online doesn't appear to have any.

  • Firewire ports inoperative

    Mac G5 with PCI-X slots.
My firewire 800 port stopped working. Also the firewire 400 port unresponsive. Additionally, the computer refuses to shut down. It goes through shut-down and then restarts itself.
I know the external drive and CF card reader are working as they function fine on other computers and the drive mounts up with run through the USB port but I need the speed of firewire 800.
I took it in for repair. They replaced the logic board. Took it home: same problem. Took it back and they replaced the logic board again. I tested it several times at the shop: it shut down fine and the firewiree 800 port worked just dandy.
Took it home and the same problem: no firewire connectivity and it won't shut down. I have reset the PRAM and the PMU.
What else can I try? Would a firewire 800 PCI-card have any better luck? I've given up on the repair shop and just need to get the firewire working.

Depending if it's an ATA drive or a SATA drive inside you can use the drive in another FW case...

  • FireWire ports disabled and gone missing

I'm having a major issue with all my firewire connections. They are not existing or active anymore. In the system profiler, it mentions no sign of having any connections only that the maximum speed is 800 mbps.
I installed a FireWire 800 PCI card but it doesn't recognize any drive connected to it. Also, its design doesn't fit my G5 correctly and I can't fasten the screw to hold the card in place.
This card advertises no drivers or software to make it work, just plug in and start up.
I'm lost for solutions to get myself working firewire. Anyone know why the system profiler doesn't see the ports any longer? Anyone know what FireWire card works on a duel G5 PowerPC?

I read the link and I have done all those things. This problem occurred last Tuesday and I have been troubleshooting ever since. (Along with my video card....as you graciously answered my call there as well.)
So, yes obviousely this card doesn't fit. I will order the recommendation from the other response.
But, how do I "reset the firewire bus"? I pressed the reset button on the logic board. Is that what you are speaking of?

  • External Drives Won't Mount with SIIG Fire WIre 800 PCI Card

I can't get any drive to mount using this card. It's the SIIG FW 800 3 port PCI card. I've also got the SIIG FW 400 and I think a Belkin 5 port usb PCI card. I've removed the other cards leaving just the 800. I've moved them all around into different slots. Nothing Changed. I've reset the PRAM and the NVRAM. I've Unplugged system and let it sit for a while. I've had only one drive connected to the 800 card and no other 400, 800 or usb peripherals connected. That didn't help either. Again, this is the second card, so I have to assume that the odds of getting to bad cards in a row is a long shot... right? I have to assume that it's the G5 but the other cards work when put into any of the PCI slots. I know all the drives work. I'm just kind of baffled here. Oh, and in the system profiler the drive shows up as "Unknown Device" but it never mounts on the desktop. Also drives connected to the 800 PCI card don't show up in programs like Diskwarrior or Drive Genius. Starting the drive while Disk Utility is open also does nothing. So, I'm at a loss. I spoke with SIIG tech support and they said they had no idea but they could test the card if I send it to the. That would at least confirm or deny if the card is faulty. I think the card is ok and the mac is just messing with it somehow? Any Ideas? Could resetting the PMU help? I've also cleared my cache and defragged and rebuilt the data directory and all the usual utility stuff. So the system is peppier but still no drives mounting on the 800 pci card? Please shout out if you have an idea... Thanks..

I eventually gave up. I will probably get another card at some point but it probably won't be a SIIG card. Even though they are recommended by digidesign I just doesn't seem to want to work with my G5. Maybe it's some kind of weird software conflict blocking the functionality of the card? Don't know. Two cards in a row were non functional. Something is gummin up the works and the PCI slots work with the other cards I have. The only thing I did not try is plugging in the optional power connection to the FW800 card, which is supposed to be optional. I called SIIG and they had no idea what the problem was and they also said that the power plug would not make a difference for the problem I was having. Anyway, I'm gonna keep monitoring posts to this cause I'd love to hear the answer.. but I'm throwing in the towel. Good luck to the rest of you still trying to solve the riddle.
