Dead G5 1.8ghz dual

G'day,
Woke up this morning to find my G5 was powerless (ie no power). It is always either awake or sleeping, so thought perhaps there had been a minor power outtage overnight... but it would not turn back on.
(In this case, it had been awake, running "Transmission". Heard it "ding" to announce finishing a file at about 1am...)
I tried unplugging everything except for the 17" studio display (only had a firewire cable going to a video camera, ethernet cable coming from Airport Extreme Base Station, and USB hard drive attached), and tried again, but still wouldn't turn on.
What do I try next...? CUDA switch? (Do these machines use one?)

How good is a powermac G5 1.8ghz Dual??? Still good?

Hey all,
So my buddy gave me this computer...owed me some money. I have the new MacBook pro and have been using that.
Here is the G5.
1.8ghz dual.
1.5gb ram
500gb seagate and a 1tb seagate.
stock video card and a 19" samsung display
Overall, I updated it to 10.5.8, loaded my movies and videos on it and have been using it a lot. Honestly, for everyday use it seems as fast if not faster than my 2.66ghz macbook pro with 4gb ram.
The macbook does cover HD content well which I could not play my 1080P stuff on the G5.
How are these machines? Still good.
Is the dual processor better than two on one chip like intel? I remember when they came out they were comparing it to a 3.06ghz intel.
Just thought I would bring it up
It seems like it pulls pretty well especially for how old it is. I do know the programs will be out of date, but really just wondering your thought on ppc and everything.

After installing, Reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
The 5 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
At least if it doesn't fix it, it'll eliminate a few questions.

Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???

I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.

If it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case).

Help!! What kind of graphics card can I upgrad my G5 1.8ghz dual?

Can anyone help me to find a graphics card for my G5 Tower 1.8Ghz dual core in order to install final cut studio2 and be able to use all of the software? My cpu came with NVDia GeForceFX 5200 (not Ultra).
Which Graphics card can I use or should I use to run the whole final cut studio2 (especially Motion 3 and Color)? Please help.

Hi-
So, you have a Dual 1.8 PPC G5, correct? 8x AGP graphics(?).
The two choices that you have, are, the ATI Radeon X800XT, or the Geforce 6800 Ultra.
Here are some benchmarks for comparison sake. Note that the 9800 is a possibility, but the X800 is better for FCP.
This benchmark shows how pitiful the 5200 really is.
One other option, is a flashed Geforce 7800 GS. These benchmarks show the possibilities.

1.8Ghz & Dual 2.0Ghz Logic Boards/Power Supply

I have a perfectly fine working 1.8ghz G5. I also have a dual 2.0Ghz G5. However, the dual doesn't power up. I'm pretty sure it's the power supply. But, I'm not positive.
My question is. Is it possible to put the dual 2.0 logic board into my 1.8ghz machine? The inside of the cases look very similar. Or is there a way to test the logic board of the 2.0 before I take everything apart?

The CPU speed of a PowerMac G5 is always 2x the bus speed or less. Thus, with the 900 MHz bus speed of the 1.8 GHz motherboard, your 2.0 GHz CPUs would clock down to 1.8 GHz at best.

G5 1.8ghz dual - Power, but no start

G'day,
I've just stuck a new CPU into my dual 1.8GHz G5, and it doesn't start up...
When you press the power button, the light comes on, fans start, DVD will spin if there's a disk in there, hdd seems to spin, but - no chime, no video to my 17" ASD.
The power light does not flash - it's just solid.
There is no response to keyboard controls - wont eject, wont control volume/beep.
Have to press the power button (makes the light more intense) for 5+ seconds to power off.
The ASD appears to be connected ok, as it can turn the computer on/off, but there is entirely no picture.
I have no 100% gaurentee the CPU works... came from a guy off the net. He's sent me 2, plus 1 heat sink, so I may just have to try the other and hope it works...
But first - anything I should try?

I tried re-installing the CPU, and paid a lot more attention to how it was seated.
I think what I'd done, was to not have it properly connected. Unlike the original CPU, it needed an extra "push" to get it in all the way. I had a flash light illuminating the connection, and was peering in through the swiss cheese case to see what was happening.
Powered up, and it booted a-ok. Let it go to the Finder, and opened Temp Monitor. The new CPU was reading 1-1.5°C hotter than the original CPU - that is - about 27 and 28°C.
Currently running a thermal calibration using the Apple Service Diagnostic CD. It gave an intial warning that the (new) CPU Slot Number Verify failed... hoping that's just cos it was a new CPU?

Can you tell me why you don't think its a good buy? Someone bought it that must have thought it was a good buy? You?!!!
I had a macbook pro, spilled an entire latte on it. Cannot afford to drop another 1500 on a new one. I understand the air is a great machine. And for someone that is hard on equipment (aside from liquid!) with no moving parts its a better option. This one is priced at $929 - good?

I was wondering if this hardware combination really exists.
The reason I ask is that when I go through the steps of building a new 13.3 1.8GHz configuration there is only the option of 1.8GHz i5 or 2.0GHz i7.
Is this possibly a typo on the apple website or does a 1.8GHz i7 exist, even though it's not an option for a new Air.

he means new as in most recent, but still refurbished models
the 1.8ghz i7 was on the 2011 macbook air, the 2012 model has 2.0
they are no longer selling any non refurb 2011 models which is why they dont appear on the site

RAM for MacBook Pro (Winter & Fall 2011) 13-inch with 2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7?

In the apple store it says no memory is available for this model. I was just wondering if RAM designed for another model (or non-apple RAM) would work. I'd really like to get some more so my computer can better handle video and photo editing. Thanks.

According to http://www.everymac.com that model can accept up to 16 GB of ram, but Apple does not certify it for that amount. You should go to OWC, http://www.macsales.com who are Mac specialists for ram that will be guaranteed to work. They even have on-line videos on how to do the installation.

Installing a Seagate 500 GB Internal HD in a G5 PowerPC 1.8Ghz Dual Core

I have just installed a Seagate 500GB SATA Hard Drive in my PowerPC, and wanted to optimize the performance to handle some intense Final Cut Pro activity. The original 80GB Maxtor 6Y080M0 is hardly big enough to store the program empty, so my First Question is: Do I configure the system to use both Drives, OR, Should I mirror the 80GB to the new 500GB & then REMOVE the 80GB to REPLACE with another 500GB Seagate?
If I were to do the latter, What is the easiest way to do the mirror/switch procedure, versus what is the BEST procedure.
Second Question: Do I leave the Jumper ON or OFF for the 1.5Gb-3.0Gb/s setting?
I am not very computer savvy- but if given good instruction I will follow it to the letter.

First problem Solved! I put the Seagate 500GB into lower slot B, plugged the Hard Drive into the waiting connectors, turned on the computer, let Disk Utility initialize the Drive, Downloaded the program "SuperDuper", Backed up the 80GB Start up Drive, then made the 500GB the new Start-up Drive. Voila! Super simple!
Once I verified all was well with the new setup, I then went on macsales.com and bought a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 750GB SATA II 32MB Cache for $132 bucks! If you're wondering how these new Seagates measure up to Western Digital & Hitachi, just check out this article @ www.barefeats.com/hard94.html and see for yourself.
Anyway, I got the 750GB today, so I took out the old Maxtor 80GB, put the 750GB in it's place, which by the way, I had to borrow the screws from the old drive as well as taking the spares from out of the Drive Bay before I got the 750GB in slot "A" and the 500GB in lower slot "B". Done.
Boot-up, OS/X loads as usual, Disk Utility sees the new drive, Initializes, I start SuperDuper, copy 500GB to 750GB, make 750GB the Start-up Disk, Re-Boot, Done-638 gigabytes free space!
The first Mirror Back-up took about an hour and forty minutes to move 65 gigabytes from the 80GB to the 500GB. When I did the Mirror Back-up from the 500GB to the 750GB it took 64 minutes! These drives ran without a sound, no heat, the fans never went above idle, and transfer rates were between 14MB/s & 24 MB/s, which basically worked out to about a Gig a minute!
What really blows me away is how much cooler and QUIETER my G5 runs now. So go for it, if I had it to do all over again, I would have bought two 1TB Drives and been done with it, but we'll see how this goes for now.

Is a 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 4GB MBA as good as a 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 4GB 1333MHz 500GB MBP?

As i am just a secondary school student, i basically just use my laptop to surf the web and watch videos play facebook apps etc.i also need to be able to run microsoft office for powerpoints and word documents. i also do a bit of photoshop when i am free. i have only a few songs in my iTunes. i cannot decide between the third generation MPA and the MBP although many people tell me to chose the latter as it is faster and has more memory. i like the MBA as it is very light and very compact. Do i need so much memory and power in my laptop if i am going to need it to last for another 3-4 years? Advice is welcomed.
And if i get the Mac book Air, should i take the upgraded to i7 with memory of 4GB and 256 flsh 11' or the one thats 13' with the same things?

I have a maxed-out 2011 13" Air, and I find it perfectly adequate for the purposes you describe. In many ways it is faster than the MBP, because of the SSD advantage. Yes, the MBP is much faster in computational power, but for your purposes you would rarely perceive that computational speed difference.
I don't think anyone can comment on the life-span as it pertains to an individual, because your usage may change, and some others won't.
I also have a maxed-out 2010 11.6 Air, and found it more usable than my 2010 MBP, which I just sold in order to buy the new Air.

Sorry, but it won't work. Video cards must be Mac versions in order to work, and there is no Mac version of the 7600GS.
You need a card such as ATi's X800XT, nVidia's 6800Ultra/GT, or ATi's Radeon 9800. All of these were produced in Mac versions.

FSB is completely different between the dual 1.8 and dual 2.5 GHz processors of the 970FX series....900 MHz vs 1.25 GHz. That likely isn't going to work as it is a big overclock.
Also, if the 1.8 processors are 970 series processors, I doubt that they would work on a 970FX board, which the 2.5 GHz board is..

Historically Apple have generally used 5400rpm hard disk drives and while the detailed information on the Apple store does not definitively say what speed hard disk the 1TB Fusion drive includes, it does make mention of testing conducted with a 5400rpm drive.
Therefore I think we can safely assume it does come with a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk. However this is not necessarily as bad as it sounds, the whole point of a Fusion drive is to automatically off-load the most commonly used files to the much faster 128GB SSD portion of the Fusion drive so overall you should get performance better than even a 7200rpm hard disk.
Finally, as far as I can see for the Mac mini it does not matter which speed model you buy they will all come with the same 1TB drive model if you chose a 1TB capacity, so the 3.0GHz Dual Core i7, 2.8GHz Dual Core i7, and 2.6GHz Dual Core i5 will all have a 5400rpm 1TB hard disk.

Dual core vs Quad Core for mild video and photo editing

I've owned PC's since ever and I'm now contemplating on coming over to the Mac world, my question is would a fully upgraded 13" MBPr Suffice for mild photo and video editing or should I try to shell out the extra cash for a lower end 15" with Quad-Core?
