Dead g5, makes hurricane noise, drives ok

Hello,
My trusty PPC g5 from 2004 has died, or at least it won't start.  It shows the grey apple screen, but no spinner, and after a few minutes the fans kick in and build to a wind-tunnel noise.
I don't have a backup of this machine, or it's other drive, so I am nervous about taking it into Apple where they might just wipe it.
Also, I surprisingly CAN start it up in Firewire disk mode, and both drives seem to be OK when accessed from another computer.
So I've copied off the most important things, and I will probably try to make clones.
But before I finally cart it into Apple (where it will probably cost more than its worth to fix it), anyone know anything I can try here?
Thanks
Bob

Hurricane sound = fans going into automatic full speed since software controlling cooling is not running.
Target Disk Mode (firewire) is a fairly low level function
Seeing drives in Target Disk Mode  = good; at least not totally dead.  Probably a system problem.  Not sure about using 10.6 Disk Utility on Leopard drive but probably OK so you could try to repair the boot drive while in TDM using your other computer.  Alternatively, boot from Leopard discs and run Disk Utility repair from there.

  • Disc drive makes strange noises

I just got my macbook and from the very start whenever I insert a disc it makes a noise like its popping and breaking internally. the disc will play fine, but the sound is SO wrong that its worrying me. Has anyone else had this problem? Was it just something wrong with the disc drive?

I think what your hearing is the drive sorting itself out, mine makes quite a racket when you first put a disc in but its fine, i think it is standard across the range. To make sure it would be worth comparing to a friends or listen to one in a shop.
    Cheers.

  • Super Drive makes bad noise/is loud on initial load

    Hey There,
Just got an MB with the super drive and i have noticed an extremely loud noise when you first load a cd/dvd. Anyone else get this? The media mounts fine and when the disc spins up, the drive is quite, but when you first load it, there are 2-3 loud cranks coming from the drive

    Compare it to this...

Mine makes loud noises as well, but I think that comes w/ the territory since it's such a skinny drive, and it's a slot-loader.

    Reset the SMC multiple times.

  • My macbook 15 inch wont turn on, it makes the hard drive sound and then a few seconds later it sounds like its powering down with like a clicking noise

Try Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If that doesn't help, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If neither helped, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utillity. The startup disk may need repairing.
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Check the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.

  • My hd makes clicking noises...

I just got the 30GB iPod video yesterday and I noticed at the start and finish of a video, and occasionally while playing music, the HD makes quite obvious clicking noises. The reason I'm worried is because I though HD's only make the noise of starting up, no clicking noises. Is this a problem? And one more question, how do I tell if it is a 5G or a 5.5G? Or are they both the same?

if you bought it yesterday it is almost surely the newer version. one easy way to tell is check if you have the search function. if you do, it's the new version. another way is to cross-check the serial number, but i don't know how to do this. the clicking is normal. it is your hard drive updating temporary memory. it is more prevalent while viewing the videos because they take up so much more data than songs.

  • Ipod HD makes cracking noises when turning..

My HD makes cracking noises when I try to search a song, or photo..
I have him for 3 weeks now, and he didn't do it before. It just sounds like normal hard-drive sounds my old computer makes, but in my opinion it's not normal.
    anyone experience with this?

I had that problem too before.
I waited for 2 days and it stopped.
My friends banged it on the floor and it was perfect (exepet for a small dent.)

When i plugged my ipod into the computer it started to make buzzing and screeching noises. It became hot so i removed it and then the screen froze while it continued to make these noises. I have never had anything like this happen. (never gotten it wet or had it exposed to extreme temperatures) It is also unresponsive to any buttons on the ipod and it didn't show up when i plugged it into my computer. What do I do? Also if it is unfixable could i get a free one from apple?

  • On start up disk slot makes weird noise

this isn't my question but its my friends mac makes this weird noise like dvvv divvv when on start up coming from disk slot

It is normal to make some DVD drive "access" noise at startup. If the drive still works (reads CDs or DVDs), don't worry about it - until it doesn't work anymore!

  • HT1338 Multiple dvds won't play.  Just make spinning noises for a few seconds then ejects.

Multiple dvds won't play.  Just make spinning noises for a few seconds then ejects.

Because this is affecting multiple DVD's it suggests a faulty drive. If you were willing to spend a few $ or € and purchase an external optical drive from any electronic shop, that would be a sound diagnostic step to take; possibly a solution and cheaper than replacing the internal drive if counting labour is a factor.

  • HP 15-d041TU DVD-ROM HP UJ8FBA makes a noise when not using

Hi everyone, here comes another problem from my newly bought HP, i sorted out nearly every issue that came along (packed) with this driver less laptop, now i have a issue that dvd rom makes a noise as if pick up is moving every once in 5 minutes, there is no disc in the drive, and i am not using it at all. I opened it and closed it doesn't seem to help. So after numerous searches i did this!
    1. ) Disabled Autorun of Windows 8
    2. ) Did a hard reset, i don't know if it's correct. "Hold the power button for 15 seconds" when computer is swtiched off
    3. ) Updated the bios again, it was updated i think but i did update again i don't know no messages about same bios etc.
Now so far problem didn't arise, PHEW!
What could have caused this? has anyone had the same problem? What was the solution worked for you?

Here's the solution, it's not the drive that makes the sound. it is the hard drive, lol hardrive is located in the right bottom of the machine which i thought it's in the left. Even when i have the drive ejected it still makes the noise so it can't be the drive right?.

  • Hard case makes clicking Noises

    Hello
Can anyone possibly help me out with this so I don't have to mail my MBP out or drive 2 hours to the nearest apple store?
My hard case at the top left corner, by the power source, makes a clicking noise when I shift it on my lap. It's not the hard drive, since it makes this noise even when the computer is off. It sounds like something is catching inside and getting loose, causing the "clicking" noise. Has anyone else had any problems with this?
    Thanks

I have a similar issue with my MBP (mid 2010), but the location is at the right palm rest area. Mine has been diagnosed as a defective bottom case and possibly top case too, waiting for the new parts to arrive. In my case, in order for them to actually replace the part, I had to take it to the store 3 times to prove their minor adjustment fix doesn't fix it.
    Hope it helps.

  • Powerbook chimes when turned on, makes some noise, then nothing

So I went to turn on my powerbook and it made the chime noise, I could hear it start to boot up, and then nothing. The screen is blank, and it does not make any noise. However, it is still on, because I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. I really need my computer for school, so any input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Melissa

    I have the same problem.
I clicked on Firefox to get it started, moved the attached mouse across the screen to click on an icon, and the screen froze. Tried rebooting using standard options but what would happen was:
    the Mac would chime.
I could hear the drive start.
Lights to hubs turn on but not enough juice to turn the light on for the optical mouse.
The keyboard will shut the Mac down.
I have been a Mac user since May, 1984 (still have my 128k)and very seldom have had assistance with problems because I try every option approved.
If I slightly depress the PMU reset button, everything starts up just fine. Can restart. Can switch drives (two external FireWire drives) and full boot will occur.
If I shut down, then restart... back to the chime and nothing else works. t did go into target mode a couple of times - the only "live" action on the keyboard other than the shutdown by the power button.
Someone suggested the PRAM battery (as he called it, the "buffer" battery). After boot, if I don't depress the button all the way, the correct time shows. If I depress it past the "click" point, it will reset to December 1969.
Any help would be appreciated and might solve both issues in this thread.
    thanks,
    lloyd
