Dead Graphics Card?

My boyfriend has a Powerbook G4 from 2005, which is no longer under AppleCare warrantee. After three years of using it at the peak of its abilities (playing World of Warcraft), the graphics card died today. Yes, we're sure that's what the problem is.
Is there a way to replace it? We were told by the kid at the electronics store that you cannot replace the graphics card in a laptop, period. This kind of sounds like bull, to be honest.
His laptop's not in very good condition to start with, and we'll likely replace it in a few months. I have an old G4 Powerbook (from 2004, I think?) that I no longer use (its power supply is shot, and the screen is cracked. A price quote from Apple for repairs on that one was more than the cost of a new computer, so it was never repaired, but as far as I'm aware the hard drive and graphics card should still be in good working order). Is it possible to replace the card in his computer with the one from my old one, at least temporarily?
If not, is it possible for us to replace it with a new card ourselves? We are not in a financial position to replace the computer in its entirety right now, but we will both be starting newer, better-paying jobs in a few months so we will buying a new computer then. This one only needs to last till then.
PS- Apologies if this isn't in the right place, there didn't seem to be an appropriate subcategory for this question. Moderators/maintainers have my blessing to move this question to a better place if they can find one.

The video circuit is embedded in the logic board, so what the kid at the electronics store told you is correct. You can replace the logic board .... the least expensive way is to check with your local Apple store. It's been reported that they can offer a 'fix everything' service for around $350, which is less than specifically replacing the logic board itself.
If that doesn't work, you can buy used logic boards and replace it yourself if you're handy mucking around the insides of a notebook computer. You can view directions on how to do this at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-12-Inch-1-1-5-GHz/63 . http://pbparts.com and http://www.ifixit.com are two parts houses that should carry the logic boards.

Unfortunately, the graphic card replacement is not easy or not possible.
In my knowledge mostly the whole motherboard must be replaced.

Reinstall a MacBook Pro with a dead graphics card?

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 Inch. Its graphics card died. I want to do a clean install of OS X Mavericks. However, if I do this, screen sharing will go off, and I will be blind during the installation. How can I do a clean install?
If I connnect the hard drive externally, then it will get the wrong drivers during the installation, if I do it via Target Disk Mode, same thing.
I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 15 Inch. I know the drivers will be closer on this, but will they be the exact same?
Is voiceover during the installation good enough to navigate blindly? If it is, I could just go blind, and once its set up use voiceover to turn screen sharing on. I know voiceover will suffice once it is up and running to get screen sharing on. (I did it that way when the graphics card went out initially)

I am going to use this as a server, and I want to make absolutely sure that everything that I didn't put on is off.

I purchased my MacBook Pro that way last year (180 days same as cash). They were pretty slow approving the card even though I have good credit. I payed very close attention to the dates and made sure all was paid off before the end of the 180 days and had no issues. I was also careful about not charging anything else to the card until I paid off the MBP, gets a lot harder to understand and control what they consider the promotional amount paid when you start mixing in other purchases and payments for those.
For me it worked out great, Almost 6 months to pay is better than 1 big hit.

Using a Macbook with a dead graphic card as an external Hardrive

Hey,
I own a Macbook pro and my graphic card just got crushed.
Assuming that the hard drive and everything else is still OK,
Is there any way I can connect it to another PC as an external hard drive and pull out all the information?
(I can turn on the mac, but it always got stuck on the grey screen and that is it)
I'm aware to the option to open the mac and pull out the disk itself, it just that I'm trying to avoid it.

Dead Graphics Card after upgrade to snow leopard...

I recently did a clean upgrade/reinstall to snow leopard. Right away as I clicked to restart the computer my screens stop displaying anything. They say 'no input' and go into energy save mode.
I had had problems before with them occationally not getting signal but I switched the two displays cables around and somehow I managed to get them
to not have problems anymore.
Trying the same tricks as before with no result I then had to turn the computer off completely and turn it back on and then the displays seem to work again.
And since I was doing system updates I had to restart several times and every time I had to do this restart one extra time. We suspect this is a dying graphics card and are thinking to replace it.
I currently have a ATI Radeon HD 2600, and have tried to find exact replacements for it but they're not easily found without ordering them
online, and I'd like to have this fixed sooner than later. I did find a firmware update but it won't work for me anymore because I'm in snow leopard and not leopard.
Any suggestions for a better one out there? or a firmware update that could possibly save me buying a whole new card?
My main uses for this computer are audio. But I do some occasional work on FCP so would like some thing that would work well there.

Go into Displays Preferences and, if you haven't already done so previously, put a checkmark in the box for "Show displays in menu bar". Then, click on the resulting icon that shows up in the menu bar to drop the menu and select "Number of Recent Items" and set it to 10. Now drop the menu a second time and see if there are two 1920 x 1080 resolutions. If so, one of them may be the older one previously in use that was working.

IMac 27" 2011 with Dead Graphic Card AMD Radeon HD 6970M

I'm from Thailand and my iMac 27" mid-2011 model is malfunctioning. I have windows 7 installed and I can use it only on safemode or when I disable the graphic card AMD Radeon HD 6970M. Updating the driver won't help at all.
I talked to the local iservice and he says it will cost me $570 just to replace this card. I find it very expensive.
Now I have learned that there is this replacement program http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167 for the graphic card issue. I'd like to know if I am part of this. I'm not sure if I'm under any service coverage since it's been after many years of purchase.

You should be covered - usually replacement programs last for 3 years from the latest date of consumer purchase (when apple discontinues the model). This is typical, but by no means concrete as I have nothing to do with Apple or its replacement policies. Your model also meets those specifications. Since the replacement program is stated as wordwide, it should also be applicable in your country.

Connect to MBPro with dead graphics card

Just returned form holiday where I have been using my MacBook Pro (2007) running Mavericks. When I tried to boot the MBP this morning it has a black screen. Tried everything including external monitor, resetting PRAM VRAM et al. Have concluded the graphics card is shot.
I can get to the files across the network but I need to run Thunderbird (my mail client) to access some of the sent emails I generated while away.
Have tried to get in using screen sharing but have not set up the necessary permissions on the MBP so it's locking me out. Is there another way in?

Just because you see a black screen doesn't necessarily mean it's the grahics card.
See if you can use OS X Recovery.
The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

Dead graphics card? machine still fine otherwise?

Hi all,
I have a 1.5ghz PB 12 that I put to sleep one afternoon. When I woke it up later, the display did not come up.
I grabbed a flash-light and shone on the display, but didn't see anything there.
The machine is still up, responds to ping, ssh & vnc just fine.
So I vnc'd in, looked at the System Profiler and the Graphics/Displays section displays "No information found".
Is there any way to make the machine realise it really does have a graphics card?

Hi and thank you for the welcome; I wish it were better circumstances, but still
I did do a PRAM reset, as well as the PMU reset, and neither made a difference.
I'd love to do the hardware tests, but as I can't see anything on the display (or even any external displays) I don't know how to run them, or how to see what they would output.. (I only know of booting from the CD drive to run them--is there a different way?)
I don't know if this would make any difference, but I did recently put Leopard on the machine.

Almost dead graphics card ?

Hello, 2 days ago my MBP out of nowhere started showing funny stuff on display.
I assumed it could be screen it self. I have attached external Display, but the same funny stuff is on it as well.

You are correct. The corrupted image on both monitors indicate the video chipset (there is no graphics "card" like in a tower computer) has failed
If this were a slightly newer MBP, the symptoms are classic for a failed NVIDEA 8600M Gt chipset and you would be entitled to a free repair (new logic board) as long a the computer also flunked Apple's special hardware test.
However, if this is the 2.16G in your profile, then it has the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 chipset and that one is not covered by a Repair Extension Program. X1600s have failed but not a the rate of the NVIDEAs, whose problems affected other notebook computer makers, too.
In the US, we have an option for a "depot repair" that is much cheaper than having the store replace the logic board. If you have an Apple Store, ask if a Depot repair is available in the UK.

Dead graphic card?

Hey everyone! I've run into a strange problem while playing World of Warcraft. While playing the game I started to notice little squares everywhere and a sort of "kolidascope" (spelling?) thing happening with the screen. I knew my fan needed to be replaced but was told that it would probably not be an issue until I had gotten rid of my G5 so replacing the fan wasn't a huge priority. However I did buy a new fan for my Radeon x800 and installed it. The fan is an Artic Cooling ATI Silencer fan and does one heck of a good job cooling the card. However, after installing the fan the issue remained with my game. Now, this problem only happens when I play the game. No other games do this and my desktop and movies are just fine. Just so you know I use the DVI out for my monitor and have not tried using the VGA out. I talked to Blizzard on the World of Warcraft forums and was simply told that the squares issues is due to the fact that the card is overheating. But how can this be true if I've just installed a new fan that cools the card better than the original fan I had. I've ran many temperature applications to watch this fan and have a widget that watches it at all times. The fan runs quieter than the stock ATI one and seems to be cooling it a few degrees lower than the stock one. I'll see ranges from 3 to 10 degrees depending on what I'm doing. Warcraft is an intensive game for the card so the fans do kick up when I play, so I do expect a rise in temperature but no overheating.
To add I've just installed the Warcraft Test Realms, which is a seperate game from the regular application. When booting up the Test Realms the issue is still there but incredibly less noticable. Should I maybe try reinstalling the game?
So all in all is my card the issue or the game the issue? I know this is a very wide question but any help would be awesome. Have I maybe damaged my card with the old fan if it was dieing slowly? I'm currently at work so when I get home I'll post some screen shots of what is happening in game for a better understanding of the situation. Again, I thank everyone for there time and help. Dual 2GHz PowerPC G5 (December 2004). Ever since I swapped my graphics card for an ATI Radeon X800 XT (November 2005) I observed a considerable heat issue with my G5. The machine got very hot, to say, the cooling fans were running constantly on high speed, sometimes full speed (summer). So at some point the original cooling of the graphics card quit – and it took me a while to figure this out (I am not looking into the computercase every day). So I bought this Arctic Cooling Silencer (February 2007), which is a fine piece and does a very good job alright, and attached it, so far so good, but I cannot help the notion that the heat from this graphics card blew my motherboard and CPUs last week (November 2007)! So, you may well exchange harddisks and memory, but avoid fiddling with your Macs, they just do not like heat.

Graphics card dead or not?

I have a 2007ish 1.1 Mac Pro and I'm reasonably sure the graphics card (an nVidia GeForce 7300GT to be precise) is dead. There is one thing that confuses me, when I turn it on I get the grey screen, the chime and the twirly processing wheel thing for the first 15-20 seconds of bootup, then the screens go black. If the graphics card was dead surely I wouldn't be able to see ANYTHING? Why do I get some seconds of output to the monitors before it all goes dead? Is this a dead graphics card or not? I just want to be sure before I invest in a replacement.

There are various states of "dead", depending on the failed component and type of failure.
Some bad cards will still work in Safe Mode or to boot Install DVD.
Did you try a Safe Mode boot (hold Shift while starting)?
In Safe mode, graphics drivers are unloaded. A compromised but not completely fried graphics cards will usually show desktop.
Then, in a normal boot, graphics acceleration drivers are loaded. In a compromised state, an ailing GPU or VRAM can't deal with the demands of the drivers; black screen.
I just want to be sure before I invest in a replacement.
Dead or not, replacing a 7300 GT with a modern, more powerful card is always a good thing.

G5 replacement graphics card dvi socket

Just replaced my dead graphics card with a new ATI 9600 AGP card. I’m running a dual 2.0 GHz G5 and a 23" Apple display. Problem I have is my DVI plug from the monitor does not fit the DVI sockets on the card!! The plug from my monitor has 10 pins and rounded corners and the 2 sockets on the card have only 8 pins and a square shape. Are there adapters that will connect the 2 or do I need to find a new card.

I had a 'dead' iMac repaired and it needed a new HDD & graphics card, the repairer installed OSX 10.6.8 and i now need to install other software but I am being asked for 'User' password so I may do this, I've no idea what this will be. Help please.

Graphics card is dead! Help with replacement please!

I've just been given a Dual core G5 powermac (2.0ghz) model. It works fine with the exception of the graphics card. Previous owner took it to an apple store for testing and they said he would need a new card.
I've got an apple display with the ADC plug.
Can someone please advise me on a suitable replacement please? I guess my options are a card with an ADC plug or and adaptor and a standard DVI card?
I find it all a bit confusing! Most of my work is music related so I don't need a high end card. I really just want a cheap solution to get this machine back up and running!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My graphic card failed and developed strange barcode type lines that flickered intermittently - getting worse the longer the computer was on. The flickering changed when the cable to the graphics card was "jiggled" / moved around. It turned out to be a problem with the ATI Radeon 9800 graphic card that came installed with the G5. There was nothing obviously wrong with the card the fan was fully operational.
This is how I fixed it:
1. Ran a Apple Hardware Diagnostic check from the Startup disk - hold down the Options key, Select Hardware Diagnostic and then select Extended. This confirmed that it was the Graphics board (Video (RAM)) and not the Logic board (contrary to the view of Apple and TechServe - both of whom wanted me to bring the G5 in for their diagnostic ... $150 +)
2. Purchased the new board (I got it from B&H Photo):

3. Installed the new board - 5 minutes total: remove one screw - carefully remove cooked 9800 board - install new board - replace screw.
4. Install new 9600 software (which the manufacturers suggest you do first) - it automatically overwrites the necessary 9800 files.
5. Purchase and connect the Apple ADC-to-DVI converter - used to connect the new board to my Apple Cinema Display 23".
6. Reboot
I hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.
