Dead Hard Drive and Purple Screen

Hello all.
I recently updated to 10.4.4, by reformating my drive and putting everything on fresh. I then put just the stuff I use back on. Didn't have any problems along the way, till today. I had the computer set to sleep after an hour, and when I got back from lunch I hit the spacebar to wake it up. There was a Solid purple screen, so I waited awhile then hit the reset button. Then it came up with the question mark folder. I started from the OS disc and ran Disk utility, it sees the other drives but not the main one. The drive doesn't make any unusual noise. Any thoughts?

Is the drive "grayed out" in DU or just not present?
I then put just the stuff I use back on.
Did this include any system stuff?

  • V570 dead hard drive and now cant boot past BIOS welcome screen

Bought my Lenovo laptop in December, 2011.  My hard drive (750g Western Digital) died last week. I was able to save some of my files but recovery partition and everything else is gone. Hard drive is unreadable when I insert in another machine or using an external USB casing.
I have a spare hard drive but now when I install that and try to boot, laptop does not go beyond the Phoenix BIOS screen. I tried the CMOS battery reset action (unplugging the CMOS battery etc) but no luck. Tried booting then pressing F keys but it just says please wait and stays there.
Someone please help. I really liked this laptop and cant believe the hard drive conked out after only 6 months of use.

not encouraging.  I'd certainly re-seat the RAM and even go as far as testing it with MemTest86, if you have more than one module test them individually for at lest 3 passes each - keep plenty of coffee or whatever at hand.
Pulling the CMOS should at least provoke a date and time error at post hopefully enabling you to then enter BIOS, it will also automatically select BIOS defaults for you - not a bad thing.
If all else fails I would put the original drive in the system and call service as OKR-MAN previously suggested, something is definitely not right.

  • How to reinstall Mac OS X with dead hard drive and no DVD drive?

    Hey,
I need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 on my Mac Mini as my hard drive doesn't appear to be booting. However, I cannot reinstall it through the OS install DVD as the DVD drive is not working either. I don't have any other Macs on hand to help create a boot disk or something so does anyone else have any solutions?
    Thanks,

Your going to need a external blank (preferably Firewire 800) drive if your not capable of replacing your Mini's internal drive.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Your going to need a external DVD drive, or use a friends Mac with one and follow these instructions to place 10.6 on a bootable USB thumb drive to install on the external or new internal drive.
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
To boot from the external drive, hold the option key down on a wired keyboard and select it to boot from, set it as the Startup disk in System Preferences.

  • Hard drive and logic board failure

    Hi everyone,
we have been suffering from 4 dead hard drives and one logic board failure in 20-inch intel iMacs (~2007) recently and last month the logic board and hard drive of a 2010 27-inch iMac (just out of warranty) just died.
Are there any known issues with the iMacs that Apple fixes even outside the warranty?

Frank:  I have a 5 month old 27" iMac and the logic board on it just died as well as I was getting all kinds of kerner errors.  I have Apple Care and although the cost to replace the product was $800 I am not going to have to pay anything.  I did talk to someone else who also had a logic board go bad on him but I doubt that you will be able to get it fixed without having to fork over $$$

  • I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to Mavericks OS.  The screen died and it's not worth replacing.  How do I remove the hard drive and use a drive sled to access info I need?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

  • HT1553 I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error...

I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

  • Hard drive and screen failures

Hello all, thank you for any help! I have to do this on my phone, apologies for any errors!
I have an early 2011 macbook pro, purchased in the fall of 2011.
    Last repair:
I had 3 year apple care, and had last taken it for repairs september 2014, for first not ejecting discs from optical drive, then losing touchpad sensory control, then starting to sometimes not booting and/or black screen. When I got it back they had replaced the logic board, hard drive, and screen and connections there were a few screws not flush on the base, and they said that was fine, and it needed to be like that for the touchpad to work.
Today, this morning, it was fine.  I left it at 9 am, came back at noon and the screen was black,  and only the least of fan sounds
    I have
MBPro early 2011 OSX 10.7.4 Lion
Use surge protector 95% of the time (except rarely when out at a cafe)
    'Symptoms':
    Black screen
No boot sound on start up
No sounds of hard drive or disc/DVD drive
No indicator light bar at the front right corner
Sound of fans running on low
Light from charger indicator is green (full)
    I tried:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
A)Shift-control-option-power a handful of times, no change
    B)Disconnected power cord, waited, reconnected
Combinations of these (power off, then A, B, power on; on, A, B, on; B, A, on; etc)
    D) I tried command-R, no boot, no change
Results: only when I use method A, then the optical drive clicks/buzzes. Otherwise no change for any other attempts I listed ^. If I shut down and restart with the power button then as before, no sounds except low level fan sound.
I am quite disappointed, one reason I've enjoyed Apple products is in being able to use them for 5-10 years :/

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the third-party developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, email the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Regards

  • I have a quicktime movie on a hard drive, and I have the hard drive plugged into my macbook, and the quicktime movie is not opening, its just a black screen. How do I convert it to the right file so I can watch it ?

I have quicktime movie files on a hard drive, and normally when I plug the hard drive into my computer, I can open the quicktime files and watch them. Now when I am doing it, the quicktime movies are opening up with a black screen. How do i convert it to be in the right format to be able to watch ?

I plugged my old drive into an identical Vostro and saved my bookmarks per the instructions. Later, when I check the file, it was in html format. While waiting for the replacement laptop to arrive, I put my old (Vostro) hard drive into a case so I could access the files. I have been able to launch web pages from the file bt accessing them through My Documents so I know the file is good. The problem is, I apparently need to convert them into a JSON file in order to use them. There is a set of instructions on the Mozilla/Firefox website but that method does not work.

  • How to wipe the hard drive on a screen-dead Powerbook G3?

The display on my 1998 G3 Wallstreet Powerbook recently went black and the computer made a noise that I understand is called The Chimes of Death, although the hard drive still makes whirring noises. My local and trustworthy Apple repair service assures me the Powerbook wouldn't be worth repairing even if they could get the parts for such an old machine.
Is there a way to wipe the hard drive and make my data irretrievable before disposing of the computer?
If there's no way to wipe the hard drive, I'd like to find out: (1) How to remove the hard drive. (2) The best way to destroy the hard drive or at least make it forever unreadable (can my shredder eat it?). (3) The correct way to dispose of a Powerbook that has heard the Chimes of Death. (From what the repair service says, I assume nobody would want it as a donation.)

    Turtlewiz,
I would not be so quick to pronounce it dead:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14438
I would try the suggestions in the above article. Will it boot to a CD?
As far as wiping the drive, it is easy as long as you can see a display so you can follow the steps necessary. You just open Drive Setup in the Utilities Folder on the CD > select 'zero all data' in the Initialization Options; do it a few times if concerned.
Removing the HD is relatively easy: Just lift off the keyboard and the heat sink, then remove the HD.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/3.0.0.html
Hit the HD a few times with a hammer and nobody will bother with it...it has a glass platter.
Nothing to offer on the recycling except Good Will may still take it as "non-working" since there are Mac users looking for such bargains.

  • Brand new hard drive and still can't get past the gray screen

i was having problems with my mac last night going to the gray screen, sometimes i'd get the folder with the question mark. i looked up for solutions and i tried every one i could find short of reformatting the hard drive. nothing worked, getting the start-up disk causes the mac to freeze on the screen with the picture of a disk and an arrow after i press the arrow to go into disk utilities. i took it to the apple store, which i wasn't really happy with my service there- i was called up immediately but then was never able to explain  what was happening to the guy he just plugged in the computer, went back to helping someone else and periodically looked at my screen. i understand that they probably take care of multiple people at once so they don't get complaints about wait times, but i don't think i was really helped at all, he just ended up saying that i needed a new hard drive and if i knew how to put one in i was better off doing it myself then sent me on my way. well i bought a new hard drive and upon installing it and putting in the mac os x disk it still freezes and no solution has worked yet.

So all you need then is to know how to format the drive and install Snow Leopard.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Gray screen before change of hard drive. Changed hard drive and still gray.

I have already done the startup commands and I'm getting nothing. Have the install disc in and still nothing....bought a new sea gate 1tb hybrid hard drive from macupgradestore.com. Help me

I went to macupgradestore.com and went to my my version iMac Intel mid 2007 20 inch.
I clicked on upgrade my Mac and went to hard drives and chose the "HYBRID HARD DRIVE" and got the 1TB.
    It's a 3.5" serial ATA-600 7200RPM.
I didn't think I could go wrong when this was one of the preferred stores from the Mac serial lookup site...
As far as the commands...before I changed the hard drive, it did nothing with the reinstall disc apple sent me.
After the hard drive replacement the commands still do nothing. I hear the disc inside the Mac spinning and making all those noises but nothing happens, just a bright white screen.
The only commands that do anything for me are the eject/f12 and command+option+R+P.
C at startup or any of the other commands do absolute nothing. Frustrated....

  • HT1386 My hard drive died and I need to resync my iPad.  Will just following the initial instructions resync my iPad and restore all my information or do I need to try to recover the iPad file from the dead hard drive?

My hard drive died and I need to resync my Ipad.  Will following the initial instructions for syncing work or do I need to restore my original files from the dead hard drive.

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.
