Dead hard drive just out of warranty

Does HP really not stand behind their products?  My hard drive has failed two months out of warranty and their customer support has been no help in resolving the issue other than trying to get more of my hard earned money out of me.  Anyone else have this problem?   Any suggestions, I'm not sure it makes sense to put more money into this product.

Yes if you can get your hands on a Windows 7 disk.
Here is the Service Manual:

This is a great deal on a 500 gb 7200 rpm hybrid drive...it has a built-in solid state drive so runs a bit faster than a standard hard drive.  $80 shipped.

  • Envy Ultrabook 6 Problem with recovery after hard drive failure (out of warranty)

    Hi
Please can someone tell me if it is true that to use HP factory recovery discs, the computer hardware has to be the exact same as when bought.
After wasted hours of trying to get recovery discs to work, I end up with the same 'Recovery failed@ screen and some unhelpful lines of code.
From reading various posts it appears that I have to have an HP replacment HDD of the same type as came with the computer. If this is the case, then the links on the support pages should say this before I shell out £39 for a set of discs.
To me a hard drive is a hard drive. I replaced a fried hard drive (1 month outside of warranty end) with a good brand replacement, but larger size. The discs will not load.
However I was able to load W7 form an iso file and get that to work. I need the recovery because I do not know how to set up the raid that allows quick boot on this laptop, and I don't have the time or any furhter inclination to get it to work.
Partly a rant, sorry, but am I right and is there any solution?
    Regards

    Hi !
From what I have read here, YES you can recover with a different(non-HP) harddrive. It just has to be the SAME size or bigger.
I would make sure that the laptop BIOS sees the new drive and set boot options to DVD in BIOS.
I don't have access to detailed instructions, but you can foun them here in this forum.
    Regards,
    Louis

  • HT1386 My hard drive died and I need to resync my iPad.  Will just following the initial instructions resync my iPad and restore all my information or do I need to try to recover the iPad file from the dead hard drive?

My hard drive died and I need to resync my Ipad.  Will following the initial instructions for syncing work or do I need to restore my original files from the dead hard drive.

If the hard drive that crashed is the one that stored the itunes library, be sure to restore the library from Time Machine (mac) or whatever backup you use on windows.  That will get back your music.  I suspect that the replacement drive has an empty itunes library and thus, perhaps, the itunes match used that to sync to its servers.
Try posting in the iTunes Match forum, you'll probably find more knowledgeable folks there.

  • [SOLVED] Possibly dead hard drive or bad raid setup...

I have a 4 drive raid5 running. Just recently one of the drives kept removing itself from the array. I have re / formated / partitioned the drive multiple times, but either mdadm doesn't accept the drive, or it accepts, resyncs, and when i try to access the raid it fails again.
I eventually pulled the drive out and plugged it into my desktop machine. That machine recognized the partition fine. However after putting the drive back into the raid i receive these sort of errors on startup:

I have tried using SMART to test the drives, however all the drives seem to fail with some sort of error. I believe this is a false positive as I have read elsewhere that the 1TB Green Western Digitals (WD10EARS) seem to have problems with SMART.
Is this drive dead? Its only a year old... and unfortunately just out of warranty.

Ok so i zero filled /dev/sde, and re-added it back to the array. It synced (for 2 days), and then my RAID5 completely failed. I can't bring it back up at all now. My BIOS says one of the hard drives is dead (SMART error). Fair enough drive is dead. But now i cant get the 3 drives back up and running in the RAID.
    I have attempted the following:
    sudo mdadm --assemble -vv /dev/md127 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1
mdadm: looking for devices for /dev/md127
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy
mdadm: /dev/sdb1 has no superblock - assembly aborted
It complains that every device does not have a superblock?
A mdadm --examine on each drive:

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • Dead hard drive after one 1/2 years

My ibook G4 stopped reading discs about 4 months ago, when the computer was about 9 months old. I was unable to bring in for help until recently, thinking it was not a huge deal. Now the computer at 1 1/2 years old, has a dead hard drive. Because I couldn't back up, I have to get data retrieval and a new hard drive. Because the lame warranty is up, I have to pay $600 dollars to essentially fix a brand new computer. Upset is not the word. It seems quite neglible that a company can make a $2000 item that starts dying essentially after 6 months of use.
The computer was used to write papers and do bookkeeping, this was not an abusive over use.
Any opinions out there? Is this "normal?"
I couldn't bring the computer in, due to a loss in my family, and school, etc...had I known it was much more than a virus, surely I would have! The lesson of a back up is also lost...because I was unable to back up, that is why I brought the computer in.....the day before I went for maintanence, ironically the computer wouldn't start.....

I am sorry to hear that you've had such a bad experience. We all have life situations that make it difficult for us to make things happen sometimes. It's all about your priorities. Obviously the problems on your computer were not important enough at the time to pay attention to. AppleCare was available to you within your first year which would have extended your warranty.
All electronic products generally come with a one year warranty. If your TV goes buggy within it's first year you would probably bring it in for repair. Afterwards it's your responsibility to repair or replace.
Again sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience but I don't know that their's much you can do aside from making sure you let Apple know. It seems to be a common occurance on these boards and if there is a growing trend to failing HD maybe Apple will do something.

  • Replaced hard drive, locked out of Windows, Recovery DVDs freezing?

My fiance has an HP Pavilion G61 laptop. He purchased it through a rental company back in 2010. Last month, the hard drive fritzed out and died on him. We had it replaced through a local computer repair store, as his laptop was no longer under warranty, but when we got the laptop back, Windows was not activated on it. We called them back and asked them to fix the issue, but after a few days, they discovered that the Windows code had been locked out and was unusable. We searched online for similiar instances and he was told to purchase the HP system recovery DVDs and run them, and that when the recovery was done, it would be back to factory settings and Windows would be activated. We received the discs in the mail after buying them from HP, and can get Disc 1 to run fine all the way to completion. Then we get to the "Insert disc 2" screen, and we put the disc in and...nothing. Absolutely nothing. It freezes on this screen every single time and does NOTHING. We're incredibly frustrated and he is talking about trashing the laptop because it's completely useless at this point. Can ANYONE help me out and tell me what is wrong and how to fix it?
For reference, it's Windows 7 Home Premium edition that was on his laptop.

I would test the hard drive and memory just to be sure there is not some hardware issue causing the problem with the recovery discs.
When you first power up the notebook, use the F10 key (tapping rapidly) to enter the bios and run the diagnostics. Post back any messages or errors please.
I can help you get Windows installed without the HP discs but is a huge undertaking and should be a last resort.
Also, Please post your full product Number for me.

  • Macbook (first batch) Dead Hard Drive

    Hi all,
i checked the search feature but didn't find too many instances, i have a first batch Macbook (May 2006) and so does my friend. He's had on going problems such as the fan problem and Logic board problem and his hard drive just went out today. But i've been somewhat lucky up until last week my hard drive just died, it went to sleep mode then all of a sudden froze, when i restarted it it just showed the Question mark.
I've tried all options such as, Option, Apple, P&R, as well as taking the battery out and holding down the power button, i can hear clicking noises but it wont read the hard drive, just the Question mark. i've loaded the hardware test and it finds no problems, as well as disk utilities but no luck there it won't even recognize the hard drive and only sees the optical drive.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1gb memory

First off, look at Terms of Use of this board. You can't post polls.
Secondly, hard drives can fail at anytime and for any reason. That does not have anything to do with whether or not the hard drive is a good batch or not, but merely because of the technology. Even though Maxtor's lineup of hard drives supposedly improved since their bad batch early this decade, my 500 GB hard drive from Maxtor died after 9 months, and that was a desktop hard drive!
This is why I strongly recommend anyone using computers to backup their data as my FAQ explains:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
As for your AppleCare won't talk with you, I don't believe it.
Edit: If you paid $250 to extend it, you should contact them and tell them that you did. Get your receipt for where you paid for it, and ask them to get you registered. As long as you bought it before the year was out, you should be able to have authorized.
If you didn't get it until after the year is out, you are out luck there, but AppleCare telephone calls usually only cost a $50 per incident fee that lasts about a week. That's why they ask for your credit card number. To ensure your call is covered under the same incident when you call back, be sure at the beginning of your call to get a case number established once you give them your credit card number.
Hard drives on notebooks are particularly succeptable to failure because of the heat inside the machines, the movement put through when the machine is in use, and their smaller parts. I strongly recommend that anyone using a notebook to at least shut down their machine before moving it off a desk for any period of time. The movement in a car or bus has such jarring motion from speed bumps and pot holes it can kill a hard drive quicker if the machine is up and running. And running into doorjams can do the same.
As for the slowdown in your machine, you may have too full a hard drive, a machine which needs the nightly scripts run, or one of these other issues my FAQ discusses:
    http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html
Ask before you do any maintenance.

  • How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

How do I recover data from my dead hard drive?

Is it dead or corrupt? There are recovery programs out there, however if your HD is head, paying pros to do data recovery is VERY costly.       Some have removed the platters and installed them in likewise drives that dont have head crashes, but torque tolerances are tight, and doing it right is a bit advanced and tricky for most. Ive done HD disk swaps 4 times and had success 3 of the 4 times. It requires cannibalizing another working HD.   In the future remember the golden rule, 2 copies is 1, and one is NONE.
Its likely you could find a local computer repair station that can do it for you cheaply.  HD dont really "die", they have fried SATA bus, or crashed HEADS........the platters DO demagnatize over long time due to heat and degauss of the data (poor storage, etc).........but in specific, a HARD DRIVE DOESNT DIE ,.........only the flying head mechanisms that read and write the data, and SATA / bus that feeds the data DIES,.......but the data (unless corrupt or magnetically corrupted) is THERE

  • Need to replace a dead hard drive

I have a G5 IMac that the hard drive just died on. A technician at the Apple store even took it out and tried it in another computer to verify and he said it wasn't even spinning. Can someone give me all the pertinent specs needed to buy a seamless replacement? (I had a technician replace the hard drive on my previous computer and there were compatability issues). Any recommendations for a replacement internal hard drive? TIA

Most drives are compatible, but use the link I provided to [macsales.com] and enter the exact model of your iMac. You will be shown compatible drives and can choose amongst them.
They also have a live help section, use that to be absolutely sure the drive is compatible.

  • Can't install OS X after replacing dead hard drive

    Hello-
Today I replaced the dead hard drive (Genius bar-confirmed) on my MacBook.
    The replacement itself was uneventful.
When I tried to load OS X, I reached the page that asks me which language I want, but that was as far as I could go. I received a warning: "ALERT--this software can't be installed on this computer". I backed out and went into Disk Utility, and YES--it recognized the new hard drive (although there was a line somewhere about "unformatted"). The new drive is a SATA 2.5" Fujitsu 7200 rpm drive. The Genius Bar guy said to definitely get a SATA 2.5".
    Any suggestions, please?
    Much appreciated.

On the off chance, have you tried a PRAM Reset or whatever passes for a PMU Reset these days?

Can I use imac 2007 which have dead hard drive as a Mac mini display

If just the hard drive is defective you could mke a bootable USB thumb drive or bootable Firewire HD. Not sure of the connecting cables for the monitor functions. This could provide the functions though.

  • T43 - Recovery from dead hard drive

I have a T43 (2686-DJU) with hard drive failure (noticed for the first time with an error message on start-up saying "media test failure, check cable ... operating system not found". After discussion with the Lenovo support folks they confirmed the hard drive needed replacement, and I have ordered a new one (part 13N6917) - I am wondering how I go about getting the new one up and running as well as rescue and recovery since I was not smart enough to make a rescue CD. Should I order one? Is there some way to pull recovery info off of my mostly dead hard drive?
I apoligize for what I presume are pretty basic questions - maybe someone can just point me to a resource that I have simply not found yet.
    Many thanks.

My hard drive failed completely and the Apple Store offered to "try" to recover it for $2000+. I went to a company called ProSoft http://www.prosofteng.com/ and they were very helpful. They sold me some software for around $100 to recover all of the data. It took over a week for the software to run correctly, but I got EVERYTHING back and ProSoft was so helpful with all of my questions.
    Good Luck

  • My External Seagate Hard drive just changed to read only

my External Seagate Hard drive just changed to read only on its own?
I went to get info and scrolled down to the  Sharing and Permissions
But there is nothing there but a greyed out : You can only read
There are No boxes to check or uncheck, No options to change to read and write, No name of owner or ignore ownership box. NOTHING ELSE IS THERE
    HELP!
I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and am having other problems as well

Click on the external HDD icon COMMAND+I.  You should see a display such as this:
You should be logged on as the administrator.  Click on the lock icon.  It should open and allow you to make the required changes.
    Ciao.

  • My HP hard drive went out.

My hard drive went out on my HP and I tried to contact someone online but could not get anyone. I need to know what I will need todo its still under warenty I HAVE ONLY HAD IT FOR GOING ON 6 MONTHS. I am not satisfied with how everything is turning out I expected more form this company.
I am a very unsatified customer.

I suggest that you contact someone by telephone or email instead or try the online chat again. Hard disks are a warranty replaceable item.  Contact HP
You will need to locate the recovery disk set or USB recovery media that you created (when asked to) at the time when you first set up your notebook.  If you did not create a set then you will need to purachse a set from HP or an HP Partnet
