Dead headphone jack?

I have an old 4G black-and-white iPod (20 GB), and I think the headphone jack is going bad.
My car stereo has a line-in jack in it, so whenever I'm going somewhere, I plug my iPod in through a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm cable. Lately, though, whenever I pick a song and hit the HOLD switch, it'll pause the song almost as soon as I put it down. I'm guessing the headphone jack thinks the cable has been unplugged, which it hasn't been.
I've heard that the iPod doesn't like cold weather, and when I'm at work, I leave it in my glove box. I live in Northern Virginia, where winter is pretty cold, so this may be a factor.
Any ideas, so I don't have to go buy a new MP3 player?

I suggest you go to www.ifixipodsfast.com and you can send it into them for $7.00. They will tell you what your issue is and from there you can choose to fix it or have them send it back..
If you are positive its the head phone jack you could always buy the part and fix it yourself..

  • Headphone jack dead on Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro front pa

I have the Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro running on a 2.4 GHz, Gb PC?with XP Pro. Everything was running perfectly yesterday evening. I went away for about one hour, came back to listen to some music and couldn't hear anything in my headphones. I hadn't made any hardware or software changes since I last used them. The headphones are plugged into the large (6.5mm) jack on the external front panel. The system is recognising them because the speakers mute?when they are plugged in, but no sound comes out. (If I plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack on the little volume control handset coming from the woofer, they work fine). I've tried two sets of headphones and I know that they are OK. In summary:- No sound from front panel 6.5mm headphone jack.- Sound connections and volumes seem to be OK, because speakers and woofer volume control headphone jack work fine.- Headphones are not the problem.- Speakers are muted when headphones are plugged in, but still no sound from 6.5mm jack.- No hardware or software changes since they were last working. HELP PLEASE!

OK problem solved. The flat connector on the card at the back of the computer was very slightly loose on one side only. I could only tell when I actually tried to move it myself - it certainly looked OK. Strange that the audio made it to the speakers OK but not to the headphones!

  • Speakers & headphone jack are dead

    I have a White MacBook, Intel-based, 2GB of RAM, 160GB of space.
Since day 1 the headphone jack has NEVER worked, but I didn't bring it in for repairs because I was headed off for university. I figured it wasn't worth it to send off my laptop just to get the headphone jack fixed.
A couple months ago I got fed up with OS X. It would make my fans go crazy. It wouldn't shut down (it would just do nothing- literally) unless I force quit everything but the Finder and then asked it to shut down. It would freeze every single time I opened System Preferences. iTunes would not play music- I would select a song, press play, and then it would stay at 0:00 indefinitely. Et cetera, et cetera. I could go on for years about things that OS X did to make me unhappy. Moving on.
So I installed Windows 7 32-bit (yes, the Beta version) and I'm extremely pleased with everything that it does. It doesn't give me grief and it does everything I ask it to without question (even shutting down! Yay).
The only thing is that now the speakers don't work. In Control Panel > Sound, it says that my speakers are enabled and working perfectly, and that the headphone jack is unplugged (it doesn't notice even when I do plug things in). The sound is at 100% and I can hear nothing. However, when the computer starts up, it does its little MacBook startup noise...
Also, the headphone jack started to eminate this creepy red light once the speakers stopped working.
I do realize that Windows 7 is only in the beta stages and that means it doesn't guarantee that my experience will be problem-free, but I just want to know if any of you can help me.
    Thank you!

Great, I heard Win-7 was going to be very functional and without all of the Vista c$@p.

Ok, your audio out has been set to "digital out" The creepy red light is in fact an optical digital output. When digital out is enabled you will have no sound.
Open the full windows Mixer, (with all of the sliders..etc). Look for a tab or menu entry that says "Advanced". Hopefully you will find some place on the mixer to enable analog out. If you see a "digital out" option in the mixer and it's enabled (checkbox?) disable it.
If there's no option you might check online and see if there's an audio driver upgrade.

  • Headphone jack, speakers went dead, analog mic jack dead, HDMI sound ok

     HP ENVY dv7-7270ca
After about a year the device has lost all sound from internal speakers;  the test meter in the 'Playback Devices' shows everything ok with the IDT Speakers, but the Headphone jack shows unplugged when headphones are indeed plugged in.  'Recording devices' shows Internal Microphone Array active and ok, Exernal Mic (IDT CODEC) shows unavailable, with an analog mik plugged into the jack.
Followed the procedures of uninstalling sound devices and drivers, removing batttery and holding power for 30 seconds; reloading device drivers specified in these forums, to no avail.
Did a data backup and reloaded Windows fresh from the factory image.  Went in smooth.  Still no sound or analog mike, or internal mikes for that matter.
I've got a client ready to lynch me because I convinced him to buy this thing.
    Any ideas?

  • Headphone jack dead after update to 10.8.4?

After the update to OS X 10.8.4 (12E55) my headphone jack stopped working. Tried to unplug & reinsert the jack- nothing.
Immediately following the update the headphone jack worked, UNTIL I unplugged it. Then it died. Anyone have suggestions to troubleshoot?
    Thank you.

You could try and SMC and PRAM reset:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
And if that doesn't work, try re-installing the 10.8.4 update using the Combo:

If I wiggle the headphones around I can get sound and it getting recognize in real tek. From what I researched its a bent pin in the headphone jack. Is there any way I could fix this or am I going to have to replace it?

  • Headphone Jack Question

    Hi guys,
My headphone jack came loose and snapped, I have a replacement one coming but one of the two small screws that holds the headphone jack in place is missing. Does anyone know what type of screw that I need to replace and where I could find one? Would going to the Genius Bar help me? (I'm out of warranty).
    Thanks!

My ipod battery seems to short out through the headphone jack unit---if the wire/
exterior post of the headphones gets jostled while the unit is playing, it stops and then displays the screen announcing that the battery is dead and the unit needs charging. This happens even though the unit has been used only 15 minutes since the last time it was charged. I can't figure out how the battery and headphone jack would be hooked up such that the two would interact in this manner.
This has happened frequently enough and with numerous headphones (apples, sony, GE, as well as a few others). I have also heard that using non apple headphones are deleterious to the jack. Yet, apple headphones hurt my petite style earholes (ha). Is this true?s

  • The headphone jack.

I'm beginning to lose my mind over this. Maybe someone can shine some light on what I can do here.
I bought my MacBook Pro on Sunday, the 25th. I enjoyed it greatly. I love everything about the MBP.
But no more than 12 hours into it's life, I plugged my iPhone's earbuds into the headphone jack while riding on the BART train. The audio sounded VERY distorted, so I pulled them out, and discovered the volume controls are disabled. One trip to System Preferences later, I find that the MBP is stuck trying to output to S/PDIF. This is verified by the red light coming out of the headphone jack.
I called up AppleCare, and they have me perform some procedures. They have me zap the PRAM, restart the computer...nothing works. So they gave me a case number and sent me to Apple Store Walnut Creek to get a replacement MBP. So on the 27th, I did just that.
No more than 15 minutes after I arrive, I'm walking back out with a new MacBook Pro in the box. Got home, unboxed it, and speakers worked. I was a happy camper.
    Until today, the 28th.
I decided to listen to some music while I was on break at work. Feeling skittish about plugging my iPhone's earbuds in again, I instead opted for some noise canceling headphones.
Lo and behold, the exact minute I unplugged them, the internal speakers went dead again. The MBP now (again) only outputs to S/PDIF or headphones. Internal speakers no longer work at all.
This is my second MBP from Apple as they replaced my last one for the same exact problem.
What should I do? I'm pulling my hair out in frustration.

It does sound like a hardware issue. You can go to any Apple Store for service. I know it's a pain, but you should do this soon - within the first 14 days after purchase, they replace defective products with new ones. After 14 days, they repair your product, meaning that in some cases it's sent out and takes 1-2 weeks.
Regardless, they will not swap out your HDD, no matter what. Instead, you might consider getting an external hard drive and cloning your internal onto that; Time Machine will only back up your Mac OS, but cloning the drive (e.g. with Carbon Copy Cloner) will do the whole drive, and allow you to clone back to your new machine. Yes, it's an additional expense (and I was a student for many years!) - but, hard drives fail too - usually at the most inopportune times (for example, just before you print your dissertation) and if you have no backup...well, you get the idea.
    Good luck!

  • No sound from the headphone jack

MacBook Intel, purchased Jun 2007, Leopard 10.5.1 here.
The problem - about two weeks ago headphones stopped to work. The effect is: I plug them into the headphone jack, the preferences show that sound output changes to headphones, the sound comes out of the headphones then after between 20 to 50 seconds it is cut and goes dead. Removing the jack and plugging it again gives another 20-50 seconds of sound.
Checked five different headphones + one set of external speakers. Same effect. Checked with different audio sources inside the system. Same effect.
Checked system config - everything fine, OS "thinks" the headphones are on but the sound is cut in less than a minute.
Did reset as described (switch off, remove power sources, hold power button for 5 seconds, power on) - this brought back the familiar sound when the computer powers on (was silent previously, though I didn't notice it) but the headphone effect persist.
What can I do besides sending to Apple for repair?

if the start up didn't have the normal tone then that means that when you restarted/shutdown the computer then you had the volume on either mute or down very low..
So i assume that your computer speakers work fine...
i think that it may be the computer switching to mute all the time when an external device is plugged into the headphone jack.... either way you have 5 months left on your warranty and i would take advantage of that or you may be kicking yourself in july...
    cheers

  • Headphone Jack Glowing Red, Internal Speakers Not Working...

Hey, I have a 2.0GHz White MacBook (almost a week old), and I just recently came across this problem (this morning, actually). I usually have my MacBook connected to some external speakers through the headphone jack, the internal speakers are pretty terrible. Anyway, last night I left the computer on playing music as I fell asleep, this morning I woke up and the computer must have some how come unplugged from the AC power, as it was dead. I plugged it back in and everything was fine (I mean, it had to charge up, and the battery 'health' in iStat Pro was down to 93%, also not sure what this means... But everything else was fine). Then, I unplugged my external speakers and the jack was glowing red, I believe there's an LED inside. The internal speakers would then not work.
I did a quick Google search and discovered that this problem had been experienced on MacBook Pros. Someone recommended plugging in a set of headphones, I did so and then unplugged them and the internal speakers worked for a moment. I plugged in the external speakers again, and they worked (and work) fine. The problem is with the internals, they don't work, and plugging in my headphones again has not solved the problem, and the light is still on when the jack is not occupied.
    Any ideas?
[edit] As of this writing, they are currently working, after plugging in the headphones again and unplugging them, however, the light still blinks when I do this, and there is a bit of a hesitation between the headphone being unplugged and the internal speakers kicking in... (longer than normal, I know there was always a slight delay, but this is a few seconds of blinking light and no sound).

you can fix this by "cleaning" the audio jack. the computer thinks that a digital output is connected. if you go to sound under system preferences, and it says digital output rather than internal speakers, then this is the problem.
I used a tightly rolled up piece of toilet paper to clean the jack. I twisted it up, stuck it in the jack, and then moved it around for a while. the red light went off and my internal speakers started working. someone else used a toothpick.
also, before i fixed this, i couldn't turn the volume up or down (unless i was using headphones) and the volume level screen that shows up on the screen had a circle with a line thru it...like the no smoking signs, but small and just under the volume bars.

  • Ever had the headphone jack go out on a netbook?

It happened to me on my eMachines emd250 Netbook I recently purchased about a month ago. The headphone jack went totally dead, but the laptop speakers still work and the headphone jack works as well.
I know I could have this fixed under a warranty, but this would leave me computer-less
The solution? A cheap $3 USB sound adapter I purchased off of a popular auction website solved my problem.
I do not notice any fluxuation in battery usage as a result of that USB sound adapter.
Lesson learned : Always buy something more expensive in the future

yes... the headphone jack was replaced by a third party.. I took it to a mobile phone repair shop near me. If all else fails I'm going to take it back there but I wanted to see if I could fix it by myself first.

  • The headphone jack malfunction Creative won't help me w

I have a Zen Micro 6GB with a headphone jack on life support. I've tried contacting Creative for the location of a repair depot, but since it's paid for and the warranty's finished they've quit responding. I guess I'm on my own now, and it may not be a "Creative" solution that replaces the Zen. Supposing every company abandoned their customer after the warranty ran out. Wouldn't YOU try another brand Their website offered NO "creative" solutions, or direction to where you could get an otherwise good product once they had your money and had a replacement model to sell you. Well, I'm now looking at home repair, because unless I cough up for a long distance call to someone who may or may not have a repair solution for me, this puppy goes into the drawer with the other dead battery-operated devices, the electronic graveyard. Bye, Creative.

Jonz,?I also am a newbie and I joined to look for people with your Zen Micro headset problem, so I could pass on the help I got. When you read below, you will know why Creative won't help you--Too much to admit!!!. The below web site provides guidance on how to probably fix the problem you have. I just fixed my daughters after finding this fix. When you open up your Zen, you won't believe how cheap the soldering is on both the Headset and the USB connection points. It appears to be generic the 6GB Micro. So, its not IF your Headset won't work, its just WHEN. These are not electrical connections, but rather connections that keep both Headset and USB pieces from moving on the circuit bd. There are 8 total. On my daughter's Zen, one of the four on the Headset module was just sort of laying on top of its mounting point, letting the Headset connector move a lot on the board, as if no solder was installed at all. The other 7 looked they were just glued down--waiting to come loose. Two things not mentioned in the fix.
. When you take the metal casing out of the plastic cover, you may encounter two small cotter pins (not mentioned in the article). Instead of finding where they came from, I just reassembled the unit without them. No problem. 2. One of the Heaadset solder points (for me the one that was completely loose) is mid-on-the-board in between the?Headset and USB?connectors.
The soldering iron adaptor I had would not?reach the point without melting all the Headset plastic and?possibly frying the Headset connection beyond repair. Had to buy a Radio Shack circuit board soldering iron?for about $8 with a narrow shaft and?long tapered point to reach the point. Fix went perfectly. Good luck.

  • Mac Book Pro Headphone jack isnt working?

Out of nowhere my headphone jack stopped working, i can only hear out of one ear. is there a way i can fix it or get it fixed for me?

How old is your MacBook Pro, and do you have Applecare?  You might still be under warranty.
Otherwise, have you tested your headphones out on another device and tried a different headset on your Mac?  Is the channel completely dead, or can you apply slight pressure to the plug to get the channels to work?
Maybe answers to these questions will give clues to others here to help.

  • 80G Headphone Jack not working

My 80G iPod headphone jack stopped working.  I did the 5 R's.  Didn't fix it.  Transferred jack out of my old (dead) iPod to my 80G.  Nothing again.  Could have been a bad part though.  Can I buy this part on here?  Or is there anything else I can try?  Thanks a lot.

Since you seem to know how to take them apart (and have the proper tools), maybe you can buy a broken iPod (of the same type) on eBay for the spare part.  Most iPods with a hard drive that are broken are broken because of a bad hard drive.  So your chances are good that the assembly with the headphone jack will be working.
And you'll have some other spare parts, such as screen, click wheel, dock connector...
If that broken iPod is broken because of a bad hard drive, but it is otherwise in better shape than your iPod, you can transplant your working hard drive into that iPod.
