Dead iMac, Looking for Options

My girlfriends 2001 iMac G3 died, and it would not be too much of a problem if it were not for all the photos on her hard drive.
I think i can get the hard drive out but I do not know if there is a specific size of hard drive enclose for the iMac's hard drive.
Can anyone help me out with this?
Also, is there any way I should store the hard drive after I take it out of the computer and before I put it in the enclosure.

The iMac has standard IDE/ATA HD, so you can get almost any enclosure, and put it in there, and then recover your data. I like the Mercury Elite Pro enclosures from OWC found Here. One thing that you should look for when buying an enclosure if make sure it has the Oxford 911 chipset and not the more common - and less expensive Prolific chipset. The only think you should do whilst teh HD is out of the computer is to make sure it doesn't get wet and what not.

  • New iMac looks for old Mac tower

    I purchased a new iMac recently and used Migration Assistant to move my Documents folder over from my old G5 Tower. To the best of my memory, I did not use Migration Assistant to move system files or applications over to the iMac.
    Once I thought I had everything configured just right, 3 things occured where the new iMac was looking for the old G5 Tower:
    (1) at startup, a dialog twice appeared, indicating that the old G5 could not be found. I used the Accounts/Log In Items to disable start up items that were "unidentified." First problem solved.
    (2) When I try to print, the iMac looks for my old G5 when I first try to access a pulldown menu in the print dialog window, and after quite awhile an alert message appears indicating that the G5 server is unavailable. I've tried deleting all installed printers and then reinstalling them, to no avail.
    (3) In my folder windows, under the Places list, there is a favorite folder that is repeated twice, one that links to the "04_FT" folder on the new iMac, and an identically named item that does not function as a link (but a folder with this name did live on the old G5) and I'm unable to remove it from the list. When I Control click on it, the only option I get is to "Open Sidebar Preferences."
    I suspect that both (2) and (3) are similar "ghost" references back to the old G5, but I don't know how to remove them.
    I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions that the iMac community might have to offer.

    I would recommend starting over and instead of using Migration Assistant this time using Setup Assistant. They are cousins, similar but different. First SA is more reliable and second it will not create a second user account. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

  • IMac looks for networks while connected

    I have a brand new iMac 21.  It's connected wirelessly to my Airport Extreme on a closed secure network.  It connects fine, but when I click on the WiFi icon, the first line "WiFi: Looking for networks" is grayed out, but with a spinning gray circle on the far right.  I can access the Internet and my network has a check mark by it, so why is the iMac looking for networks?  Also, when the iMac wakes up from sleep mode, I get a window saying that it's looking for a network, even though I can see that it's already connected to my network.  I checked the network preferences on my Macbook, and they're exactly the same as on the iMac, but the Macbook seems to know that it's connected.  I checked the "ask to join new networks" box if that makes any difference.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    If it is constantly searching for networks every five seconds or so, then it is the bluetooth - wifi problem discussed on other threads. I find that system preferences > network and clicking at the bottom on the 'Show wi-fi status in menu bar' button to switch it off, and then back onto the menu bar, solves the problem. Sometimes on waking I lose wi-fi completely and have to reload, but that's infrequent.
    Hopefully Apple will come up with a solution soon.

  • Dead screen, looking for screen sh

    I have a Zen Xtra with a dead screen. The backlighting works, but I do not get any text on the screen. Everything else works. What I am looking for is screen shots that will take me step by step throuh the different screens, ie, to pick an artist I press menu (pick of what screen looks like), press select button once, get this screen (pic of screen), press select button down twice to get to artist (screen shot) etc. I have an idea, through trial and error how to play some music, but need to know how to get to albums, artists, play all, and play mode. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Since many have viewed this (But no one has replied), I will reply to myself. I took the MacBook Pro to the apple store.  They took out the battery, which was working fine by the diagnostic, and found that somehow, the traChpad had tightened itself in terms of sensitivity.  They adjusted the trackpad sensitivity, buttoned it back up, worked like new, no charge!!!  If you experience this problem, take it to the apple store, let them adjust the track bar, you'll be off and running in 15 minutes...

  • Airport Extreme Causing Kernel Panics - Looking for Options

    I have an iBook G4/1.42 gHz/512MB (mid-2005) that is now out of warranty. All of a sudden, it starts throwing kernel panics. I read through the panic log and the log has references to the built-in Airport card. Keep in mind this is the model with the Airport card that is not easy to remove.
    I turned off the Airport card and the KP's have stopped. At this point, I'm looking for suggestions. Am I better off trying to replace the Airport card or is there an external device that will suffice at lower cost. Thanks for your input.

    I'm in the same boat ... the kernel panics made me think I was using a windows machine. I should have known something was starting to go wrong when the internal fan was turning on more and more -- it must have been trying to cool the airport card off!
    Right now, I have airport and bluetooth turned off and I haven't seen panic since and the fan has stayed off. I'm using a firewall connection and internet sharing to my work laptop so my wife can use her email (a very temporary solution).
    The www.ifixit.com site has 'cards' for $70 and claim the installation is "difficult" -- they don't even offer installation instructions.
    For now, I think I'll run a wire from the airport to the where the iBook normally resides. And maybe when I concede that my iBook won't get fixed by itself, I order one of the external USB 802.11b/g dongles.

  • Cracked screen on iMac - Looking for a replacement.

    Hello:
    Unfortunately yesterday I cracked the screen of my intel iMac - *#@%&!.
    I looked into getting a replacement from Apple or from another supplier and a brand new screen will cost you upwards of $900. I obviously don't want to pay that much.
    I can probably get an old iMac in Craigslist and just replace the screen. The older the iMac the cheaper I can get it. I have the manuals and the knowledge to replace it but don't know if any 20" screen would work.
    For example - would a 20" screen from a G5 or G4 iMac work on my intel iMac?
    I've been looking around the forums but can't find any clear answers. If anyone has any information about this it would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Have you at least asked them if they can help? The iMac is in some ways an oversized laptop without a battery. The LCD screen is a common enough technology between laptops and iMacs, they may be aware of what's needed.
    Remember the iMac 17" domed machine had its display made by the same people as the 17" Powerbook.

  • Looking for option to view modified photos

    After years of owning a Mac and organizing all of my photos manually, I decided to break away from using Adobe Bridge and import everything into iPhoto. I think iPhoto is easy to use and doesn't get in my way except for two things:
    1. I'd like to be able to view all of the photos I've edited using iPhoto (i.e., I'd like to be able to have something like a View option that allows me to display Modified only). This would help me post photos to Flickr much easier so I know which ones I've edited (I edit all of the pictures I choose to upload in some way before uploading to Flickr).
    2. I'd like to be able to make multiple versions from an original and then have iPhoto index them.

    Captain
    Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
    1. I'd like to be able to view all of the photos I've edited using iPhoto (i.e., I'd like to be able to have something like a View option that allows me to display Modified only). Are you wanting to see the current version of all photos or seeing only the photo that have been modified - in iPhoto you will alway see the current version of each photo and if you export it you will get the current version
    You can go to the pictures folder and right click (control click) on the iPhoto library and select the show package contacts option and look - do not move or change anything - in the modified folder to see which photos have been modified
    2. I'd like to be able to make multiple versions from an original and then have iPhoto index them.
    you can duplicate any photo as many times as you want and edit each one giving you different versions - what exactly do you want iPhoto to with these
    If you have suggestions for Apple these user boards are not the place to make them - use the provide iPhoto feedback command under the iPhoto menu

  • Help iMac looking for bootable drive

    Started Boot Camp. Partitioned the drive. Inserted Windows 7 disk. Could not select partition because it was not formated. Quit windows 7 install. restarted iMac. I get "DOS" type screen the states "No Bootable Device -- -- insert boot disk and press any key.
    Now what???  Is there a OS X boot disk that I can download.  How do I get the iMac to boot to OS X again?

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    You were doing the Windows installation correctly. When Windows asks you for the partition to be installed, it will tell you that you can't install it in the BOOTCAMP partition, so you have to format this partition, and then, you will be able to install Windows.
    Now, turn off the computer and turn it on. Then, hold the Option (Alt) key just after the startup sound, until you see all bootable volumes on the screen. Then, choose the Windows DVD and install Windows. If you need all the steps to install Windows 7 on your computer, follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

  • ITunes 11 hangs up on iMac looking for airport express.

    Any help is appreciated, struggling with Apple issues. I have 3 airport express units set up to act as individual zones for a multi-channel amplifier in my home. The main iTunes library is housed both on my iMac running OSX Snow Leopard as well as an external network hard drive. With the latest upgrade to iTunes 11 i have noticed while directly using iTunes and through my iPad using Remote that iTunes gets lost and stops working. The screen will show that the program is trying to locate the airport express zone and you cannot close the dialogue box or close iTunes. When i view the airport utility it shows all of the airport express units functioning properly. The only way out is to manually shut down the computer and re-start. Is this an iTunes issue or possible setup issue with the airport express units. The 3 devices are in close proximity to each other feeding the amp but, functioned properly prior to the new iTunes release. Not as familiar with Apple networking and appreciate any ideas to remedy. Nothing worse than rocking out to a great tune only to have it stop mid-song with the only solution to shut down the iMac.

    The same goes for iTunes 11.2.1 on 10.9.3. And it's not the first time, either. In fact, I've lost count of the number of times a software update has broken Airplay. It's immensely frustrating. If past experience is anything to go by, they'll fix it in a few months' time but until then there's nothing we can do about it. Unless someone can tell me I'm wrong?

    Here are the Tiger System Requirements.
    The iMac G4 700MHZ, will support Tiger 10.4.x, but you will need additional RAM.
    What size is the Hard Drive, and how much free space is available?
    What type of internal Optical Drive does it have?
    "...have 10.4.11 tiger..."
    Is that a a href="http://members.aol.com/onlyftp/TigerRetailFull.jpg">Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD?
    The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Firefox insists on looking for some links on local disk

    The other day, Firefox, out of the blue, asked me to confirm something which I did, but was swamped and did not notice the details of the question. Now, when I go to my own website (which is not problem) but try to click on a relative link, Firefox looks for the html file on my local machine instead of the Internet. I have looked for options to alter, checked the registry, etc, and can't stop this. Third party links embedded in my website open normally. This is driving me crazy and I see that some other people have had this problem...but their pleas for help did not garner them a solution. Help!

  • Looking for advice on small office use ...

    I'm looking for options to share our photo library in a small office environment. Essentially we have a single person (ie, our photographer) who is responsible for maintaining our program's photo library. What we're looking for is a way for him to very easily "publish" the photos which would allow other staff in our environment to quickly find and use images when necessary. We're a pure mac environment, although our photographer is currently a bridge / CS3 user (ie, not Aperture). I'm an experience Aperture user at home, and I'm trying to see if it could be used in a shared environment.
    If not - does anyone have any suggestions ?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Tell us about your "shared environment." I assume the various Macs are connected via a local network. Do you have a dedicated server? (A mac that is used to store files and is always on - that all other macs can access via cable or wireless.)
    If so, it seems that Aperture may be the wrong app for this. Since "everyone else" just needs to access pictures that the photographer has adjusted (using AP), what you need is software that accesses a "library" of image files. I'm thinking of something like the old iViewMedia Pro (now MS Expression Media, yes it's available for the Mac). So, basically you need a good DAM (digital asset management) app for everyone to use.
    What I envision is this (not sure if this is the workflow you are thinking about) - photog processes RAW or other image formats in AP and exports adjusted images to jpg or tiff. These are then stored in some folder hierarchy. "The DAM Book" discusses a strategy for this - folders in the
    <year>
    <month>
    <day>
    hierarchy, but you can use some other organization like
    <year>
    <subject>
    Once the photog has processed the images and exported the final products, you import each new batch of images into each of the DAM software on each Mac. This software should be able to read metadata like keywords (you'd have to be sure the AP exported image files have XMP sidecar files or DNG files with embedded metadata that includes keywords - keywords are the important data you really need for everyone to use when searching for images). Unfortunately, DNG is still not well supported in AP, it's better handled in Lightroom. However, others here may want to add some ideas. I believe you can add some metadata like keywords directly inside other image file formats (tiff, jpg??). Don't know if AP handles this.
    At any rate, look into Expression media or something similar that others here might suggest.

  • Time Capsule "looking for backup disk" problems, running Lion on 24" iMac

    Hi,
    I'm having problems with my Time Capsule.  I can't get the backups to run for about a week.  The backup just says "looking for backup disk" for ever.  This is a first gen Time Capsule, and it's still working fine for two MacBooks in the house.  I have all the Apple updates installed, and I'm running 10.7.2.  In Preferences, Time Capsule, I can see the available/of space and there is plenty left.  It's not showing any Oldest and Latest date info for backups.
    If I go to "select disk" and choose the Time Capsule, I'm prompted for the password.  When I press "Connect", the message changes to "Stopping Backup" and this will run for ever.  I have plenty of disk space available, have repaired permissions, have booted in safe mode, reset pram and nvram and probably a few other options to no avail.  I can enter the Time Machine and see all of my backups without problem.
    As a side note, I have also noticed instability whereby various programs have been 'not responding' of late, and need to be force quit.  Once that happens, the iMac won't properly shut down and restart; I usually need to how down the power button.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    I'm having the same problem.  Anyone have a fix?
