Dead iPod?

I've had my 120gb Classic for about 13 months now. A few weeks ago it stopped working. I got a message on iTunes mid-use saying something was wrong with it and I needed to restore it. Easy enough. I've had problems before and there was nothing a good restore couldn't fix! Restored it with my desktop (desktop contains all of my music; I set the iPod to manual after syncing and I use it with my laptop), plugged it into my laptop, and what do you know? No music. Got the same message (I don't remember exactly what the message said). Tried this once more with no avail. Now, I plug it in and it doesn't even show up on iTunes. It does however say it's connected on the actual iPod. I've tried it in different USB ports, with a different USB cord, and on two different computers so I'm convinced the problem is within the iPod itself. Seeing as how I can't get it to show up on iTunes, it seems 'unfixable' in my hands. Am I going to have to throw down two-hundred-fifty big ones or is there a solution?

Howdy lcavl,
The article linked below details a number of steps that can help get your iPod Shuffle to power on, and, if necessary, set up service for the device.

  • Is there a way to transfer music from a dead Ipod to a new one?

My Ipod won't charge and I have another one to use for music and idk how t put music on there from my dead ipod I don't have my music on my computer cuz I got detleed

You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If the computer does not see the iPod there is no way to get info off the iPod except a Data Recovery Company might be able to do it.

  • How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on?

How can I see the last location of a now dead ipod touch 4G that had find my iphone turned on? I can see my macbook but I cant see the last location of my ipod touch. I lost it a few weeks ago and figured it would show up. But it has not and I need it again for my job. Please help.

There is nothing you can do now. There are apps available from the app store that would give you that information if installed before it was lost/stolen.

  • Dead iPod touch during 3.0 update process

Cross-posted to "iPod Touch" forum... But because another person had a similar problem with Vista as well, am posting here too in case someone can help...
...Not only during update to 3.0, but also during update to 2.2.1 and during a restore attempt 6 weeks ago. All 3 "dead" iPods have been replaced by Apple - I'd like a solution...
I have videoed the update taking place and the iPod dying during it - sadly it is in MOV format (439MB) and I cannot convert to an uploadable version for Youtube... By DEAD, I mean, no power and will not display ANYTHING on the screen. Simply won't power up again.
This is what happens: Download update using iTunes... Extracting software... Backing up iPod... Preparing the iPod for the software update... (iPod shows USB plug and CD - then apple logo...) then the updating progress line appears on iTunes and on touch. Updating iPod software... Verifying updated iPod software... Updating the iPod firmware... White progress line on iPod disappears after a few seconds and screen goes black. Error message displays on iTunes - "The iPod xxxx could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (6)"
iPod is now dead and needs to be replaced,
    1) Has anyone experienced this?
    2) Has anyone SOLVED it?
Maybe related is a problem with some videos that have happened recently (and were the cause of me trying to restore the iPod last time it died) MP4 (or MPV files) play for about 20-30 minutes, then screen goes white, then black, then apple logo appears, then iPod returns to home screen after about 30 seconds. My usual solution to this has been to remove all videos, photos (which are corrupted by this time), audio, and then re-sync back.
I'd appreciate ANY help please. I intend buying an iPhone soon and would like to know that the problem won't occur on that, every time I try to restore.
    Cheers!

  • I need to add my new ipod to itunes. it will only show the old dead ipod. i want to keep the music, but get rid of the info of the old dead ipod and add my new one and its info. please help.

    Hello,
I need to add my new ipod to itunes.
itunes will only show the old, dead ipod that my niece had given me secondhand.
I just got a new one and want to put in it's serial number, etc. but keep the music.
Please help, I've been going around in circles online for hours. I don't want to merely change the name of the old ipod, which is the only info I can find.
    Thanks.

"In addition, I would like to get all of the music files that are already on my ipod on to my new computer"
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod to iTunes.
Once the music from your iPod is in your new iTunes library, you can go about adding new music as you did previously.

  • "Dead iPod" icon on screen -- help!

Hi. I have a fifth generation iPod that went dead on me today. Is my music and iPod lost?
The iPod froze mid-play so I reset it. I had to repeat this a few times (froze, reset). Then it turned on and I could hear and feel the iPod gears turning and clicking in a way that I've never heard or felt before. Almost like something was loose. Then I got the dreaded "Dead iPod" icon (ipod with two x eyes and a frowning face) with an exclamation point and the apple.com support address. It won't take me to the main menu. Oh no!
Then I remembered that today my iPod got stuck to a magnet that is on the clasp of my bag. I don't know how long it was there for, but it's never been stuck to that before. Maybe that is what did it.
Can someone help me understand and fix this? Please?
    1. What should I do? Should I try plugging it into a computer to restore it?
    2. Is my music lost? Is there a backdoor way to pull the files off of my iPod?
    3. Is there any hope at all for my iPod or should I just toss in the towel.
    Thanks in advance!!

The magnet might have destroyed the iPod's hard drive if the drive was spinning and the magnet caused the read/write head(s) of the drive to crash into the platter(s).
An example of what I mean...

  • Dead ipod shuffle first generation

Hi everyone! First time here. Lots of great information, but I can't find my answer. Mine works fine until I plug it into the USB and then there is absolutely nothing. No lights, no nothing. Anybody had this happen before? Please help! I love my music!

It may help fix your dead iPod however you may need to run the application a few times for it to work.

  • I fixed my dead :( iPod

Hi, I thought I'd share this one with those who've had the dreaded " iPod go to support" picture come up on their iPods.
Some 18 months ago my 2nd gen monchrome 40 Gig Click Wheel iPod got corrupted when connected to someone else's computer. I followed all the descriptions on the Apple site to no avail. Every now & then I tried it again, but still dead. This is what I did to get it back to life.
    1) Pressed the centre button with the menu button. Waited for the Apple symbol then put the iPod to my ear. As I listened to the hard drive it sounded as if it was "stuck" in trying to get started much like I compared to a record player stuck in the groove.
I'd listened to this b4 but this time decided to physically give the iPod a shock by dropping it (upright) onto the base of my hand in order to jog the hard drive playing head.
    2) I then quickly pressed the centre button & fast forward. That's when it sprang to life & gave me the language screen
    3) It then asked me to refresh it via iTunes. It came up as "brand new" status. I re-installed the firmware to 3.1.1
    4) Finally charged it the iPod via a mains adapter I have.
2 days later it's still working perfectly. I really believe the jogging was the turning point, & hope my story will be of help to those with the same problem.

Ok I don't recommend that anyone try this, but it worked for me. I have had a dead ipod with all the same symptotes as the above and I tried a small tap on my hand that did not do it but then I tapped it on a harder surface, my chair. And it sprang to life. I figured it could do no more harm. But like I said I could have wound up buying a new on at around $200-$300, SO DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!

  • Retrieving notes from dead iPod

Hi everyone, I have a first generation ipod that is dead, will not turn on, not sure if it is the battery or something else. Is there someway that I could get the notes (350) off of it? If I take the hard drive out and swap it into a working ipod, will that do the trick? I'm thinking of going this route rather than trying to get the dead ipod repaired because the home key is also not working, and for some reason you have to be right by the router for it to pick up the wi-fi. I had not synced the ipod with my laptop in a long time, so there is no backup of the notes.

I had written many notes right before the ipod died and had not synced the ipod with my laptop in such a long time that if there is a backup of the notes, there would only be like 20 of the 350 notes. If I swap the logic board with the built in solid state memory chip into a working ipod touch and all goes well, then all my notes, Safari bookmarks, contacts & apps would be there?

  • 2nd dead iPod Touch 4G in 2 months?  Battery/charging problems!

    Hi everyone,
It seems as of tonight that I will have to return my second iPod Touch 4G in the last two months. In both cases, it was an issue where the device would no longer charge, and became very hot on the top of the back panel when the device was turned on even for a few seconds (while not being plugged in). In the first case, the device seemed to be defective from the time I opened the box, which was confirmed at an Apple Store, but they asked me to ship it to Apple Repair to be checked out. Apple took a very long time to get a replacement to me, but was good about that problem, and I was happy with the replacement for the past month when all of a sudden tonight the new one would not change and became very hot.
Is this an issue that anyone else has seen? I essentially only charged it off of my laptop or a wall charger unit, but it seems like the battery essentially is shorting out. I love this device, but actually need to use a PDA-type device enough that I am questioning whether I should get a replacement or go back to my old Palm TX.
Thanks for any thoughts/feedback on my iPod Touch 4G battery/charging problems.

Most battery complaints complain about loss of charge. The iPod is designed to lose heat through the back as the battery discharges. This is most common when using the device a lot - like playing games. If yours will no loner charge, by all means return it to Apple.
As far as being a PDA goes, it is as good as any smart phone out there. The PDA, as you once knew it, is dead and has been for 5+ years. Take your iPod to an Apple store and insist on a replacement.

  • Dead ipod 4th gen

I have a ipod classic 4th gen with 20gb and it has stopped working. I reset it when I first got it and put my songs on it and it worked fine. I let is set for a few months while I tried to find a new ipod cable for my car. When I tried to use it, with ear buds, it didn't turn on so I thought it may be dead even though it had a full battery when I shelved it. It has been plugged into a wall charger for about 45 minutes now and it still doesn't work. I have looked at a few other discussions and
1 menu + select doesn't work, ipod is completely dead (fancy paper weight)
2 my macbook 10.6.8  with itunes 10.6.1 doesn't to recognise my ipod, it doesn't even show up as being plugged in
I get no exclamation points or sad faces just the black and white screen, off. It absolutely will not turn on.  I have yet to try the drop on floor method, especial since that is how I lost my last Ipod(poor ipod mini, I miss you). I also am not as technically inclined as some so I will also not be taking my ipod apart. I have aslo not dropped this ipod since I have owned it, looks like it was dropped maybe once before I got it.
I really don't want to drive 45 miles to the nearest offical Apple store...
    Thanks for any help.

Mine is dead too. I have 80GB Clasic. A few weeks ago, the LCD screen stopped working, and when i went into settings..with the help of a flashlight, the backlight in settings had nothing next to it like the other featueres had. Then I plugged into the computer and I barely saw LOW BATTERY.
So I left it in thinking that is charging, but after several hours, it just had a blanl black window. I jiggled the power switch back and fouth and left it on OFF. I first tried to reset using the Center and Menu button, and held it for 6-15 secs...NADA, Then I did the same jiggling, and this time I tried the bottom Pause and center button (as a genius at apple phone support told me to try, and it worked. This was after I went to the genius apple store, three years ago, he told me it was FRIED.  I was ****** after spending 400.00 on this 80GB.
Now.Nothing at all. Just Black screen. BUT, weirdly enough, afrter thinking the LCD screen went black and no useful, I did see the light on the LCD screen splashed a Apple website...WHAT?  How did that happen?  I tried differnt apple cables, JBL soundstage, my computer, and itunes, it also never showed up in devices.
I'll think twice before i ever get another apple ANYTHING.  made in china.....well well well. Does not surprise me AT ALL!  So I guess this goes to recycle.  heck if i'm going to give this back to apple and get a smaller reburbished ipod, only to that to go out too. I'd rather toss it in the trash.

Take the broken computer to an Apple Store for a free diagnostic test.  Ask the repair tech how much it would cost to fix.  No one here can tell you because we don't know what is wrong with the computer.

  • Dead ipod when using 2nd laptop to charge

    1. Using the USB port on my laptop (Dell Latitude 420) to charge my 5G 80GM ipod has worked fine for the past 30 days since new.
    2. Switched to my wife's Dell Inspiron 5150 to charge it and now it's dead. I started out with the flashing white screen every 5-7 seconds and then absolutely nothing.
    3. I reconnected to my laptop and its still dead. iTunes does not recognize that the ipod is connected.
    I have considered:
    A. 5Rs, but don't think this is an option given that the ipod must be charged first and all indications are that it is not charging.
    B. The toggle of the Hold button followed by the menu/select button exercise.
    C. Ran the diagnostics in iTunes - redlight/failure in the iTunes box.
    Any help appreciated.

Have you left it pluged in for an hour, I'd hate to say it but you may need to send it off to get it fixed.
