Dead MBP after attempted HD upgrade

So I found a good deal on a 320GB WD HD at MicroCenter yesterday and thought that would be an easy nice upgrade for my MBP. So I installed the new HD and powered the MBP on and the little light came on and the CD drive would spin up but no video. So I thought maybe I forgot a connection but after opening and closing the unit 5 or more times and putting the old HD back in and removing the 10.5 OSX CD from the drive I have yet to be able to to do anything to make my laptop boot. The light on the latch switch stays on and the drive will CD spin up every so often but never get video or the boing sound at power on (I am not sure if the speakers were muted the last time I was using the laptop which I thinks somewhat controls that).
I believe the unit is a 2.16 with 3gig ram installed with the original HD I am just trying to get it back running. I have tried CMDOption+RP at power on and no boing and not reset with a second boing.

Funny - I recently went thru the exact same thing! I had two problems - Keyboard/TrackPad cable was disconnecting when I was attempting to fit the top cover back in and one of the RAM stick wasn't seating properly. After I fixed those two problems I was able to use the new HD (Oh and as it happens to be the case - I used the same 320 WD HDD!).
So hopefully this will help you.

  • Has anyone been unable to restore their iPad after attempting to upgrade to ios5? error 1

Has anyone been unable to restore their iPad after attempting to upgrade to ios5? I get an unknown error 1 message. Thanks.

I have the same problem. Something happened during the download and froze iTunes. After spending three days searching these forums with the dead iPad, the only thing I got to work was to try downloading iOS 5 using my sons computer. This worked. However I cannot now get my computer's iTunes to sync with my iPad.. It contains the same error message (1602) and has the same problem as before. It is not an antivirus problem. I need some help too

  • IPhone 3G no longer works after attempt to upgrade to 2.0.1

    Hi all,
I have a black 16 GB iPhone 3G on a contract with Vodafone Australia. Last night I attempted to upgrade the firmware through iTunes to 2.0.1, after getting the latest security update and version of iTunes (7.7.1 I think it is). Anyway, the iPhone software appeared to download fully but then when it tried to apply the update everything froze and all I could see was the apple logo in the centre of the screen with the spinning cog below. I have tried restoring and followed everything I could find in Apple's support documents, including trying to put in DFU mode and restore but nothing - I keep getting a 1604 error. I can't contact Apple as their phone lines are only open weekdays and there is no Apple store in Melbourne as yet. Any ideas?

It was like that overnight. However, I just took the iPhone in to a Vodafone store and they replaced it with a brand new one. Problem solved I guess. Just synced up the new phone with latest firmware and everything seems to be working fine.

  • Cannot address WRT54G Ver5 After attempt to upgrade.

I attempted  to upgrade the firmware and now I cannot communicate with the router. I just have a blinking power light . Tried the reset and what I can find on the Linksys board. Any Ideas?

You may need to hard code an IP on your PC NIC so you can get communication with the router and try to flash the code again. Try entering say 192.168.1.50 with a 255.255.255.0 mask. Linksys has a tftp utility to do a tftp transfer of the code to the router. You can get that from their ftp site in the network directory. If you can't communicate with the unit it is probably partly because the router's DHCP server cannot function in the state it is in. It may be able to communicate on its default IP address of 192.168.1.1 but can't serve up an IP for your machine. Your best bet is to get a direct internet connection and get a live chat going with a Linksys engineer. They can help you get the code flashed on the unit again. That is if it is possible to recover it. You can't flash the code with wireless. If you tried to do that then you may have created a problem. You can only flash the code with an ethernet cable connected to the device. After you have the tftp.exe program, a static IP address on your PC and the code image downloaded to your PC you will be ready to try it again.

  • HT6154 iPhone 5s is stuck in recovery mode after attempting to upgrade to  7.1.1

I attempted to upgrade my iPhone 5s to 7.1.1 today
During the process, the phone Screen got on the upgrade progress bar. After an hour I decided to cancel the upgrade by turning off the phone.
I am not sure if iOS 7.1.1 ever finished installing. After turning it back on I see the recovery icon which won't go away after turning it off and on.
How do I get out of this recovery mode loop?

    OmarZB,
it appears the bottom line is that the upgrade failed and left the phone in the recovery loop. As it turns out, because I plugged in and used itunes for the upgrade, a backup was automatically created before the upgrade started. I had know idea until i decided to check under itunes > preferences > devices.
I resolved my problem by restoring the factory settings and then restoring the backup that was automatically created.
All is well now after many hours of stressing.

  • Imac g3 screen issues. (after attempting to upgrade.)

    Hello!
I was installing mac osx on my failry old imac g3. It told me that my firmware needed to be installed. So I clicked restart. When it restarted, my screen didn't show up at all! I restarted again and my screen was faint, crooked and blue. Now I can't even run my original os9!
Did I delete some kind of screen setting!?
    How should I fix this!?

For a firmware update to be applied to such a machine, the machine has
to be running/booted into OS 9.1/9.2; and support for the USB pen/flash
drive would have to be working inside the computer to import from one.
If the iMac G3 has FireWire ports, you could use a FW cable from another
Mac and use that Mac to import the firmware update into the hard drive of
the other computer; or use disk utilities of the proper type to attempt to
repair the old iMac's hard disk drive before going further. Could be not
only is the logicboard in jeopardy, the drive may also have issues.
[In some cases, a dead or weak clock battery can also be a problem in
the process of firmware updates and PRAM matters.]
The incompatibility of pre-Firmware updated iMac G3s to properly
display video is part of the symptom you get to experience in a sit-
uation where the OSX was installed (or X disc was used to boot the
computer, before firmware was updated in the running OS9 system.)
A different hard drive with the OS9 system for the iMac installed on it
with the Firmware Update on it, and put into the iMac could help in the
process; but you'd have to run the Firmware update after the computer
itself was physically installed in the drive to flash the computer's ROM
and upgrade the bootROM firmware to 4.1.9 or whatever your's needs.
A universally recorded CD-R would work in both a Mac and a PC; Mac
users have been making these for years, usually on a Mac, of course!

    There are a few different approaches to attempting to solve this;
    one company has a special process and wanted to sell something;
this following quote is someone's experience from the above link.
"...I thought, what the heck, it's good as dead already... why not try one
more thing? So, I held down the Programmer's button on the side of the
iMac while starting it up.. and bingo! It didn't shut down this time! The
screen was black, but it was up and running to some extent. I hooked up
a PC monitor to the iMac and saw the Open Firmware screen. This was
pretty exciting, until I realized that it was not accepting any input from the
keyboard or mouse. What now? I stuck my OS 9.2 CD into the slot, did
the "3 finger salute" reboot, held down the C key and prayed harder than I
have in a while.... and eureka! The CD booted the iMac successfully! I
was able to do a clean install of the OS to upgrade it from 9.0 to 9.2,
restart the Mac; then upgrade its firmware..." -- may not be repeatable.
Anyway, hopefully you get more feedback on this and a resolution solution!

  • Mac air won't start after attempt to upgrade OS to Maverick

I was prompted by APP store that a new OS Merverick was available so I decided to install.
I downloaded the OS via APP shop (therefore no disc) and check for the updates for other software before restarted the Mac.
Since then, it won't start up the system and keep stack on the grey screen with a apple mark.
Having checked some forum in the Apple Support Communities, I managed to open a disc utilities and tried to repair.
At the first instance, there were some error occurred, but after few attempt with the disc utilities it now says that HD is fine.
However, main HD which is displayed on the left side of disc utilities is gray and I can repair permission.
It also says that HD (journalled) which terminology that I have no idea what this means.
Several attempt with the disc utilities, when I tried to restart "Apple symbol" appeares and several second later the "NO ENTRY" symbol appears and get stuck.
At this point, I decided to re-install OS X Lion from the CD, but when I try to select the HD is says that HD is locked.
I am completely lost to what to do next.
I have several files on this MAC which I would like to rescue if possible.
I have never had any issue with HD and I can only deduce that this was caused by the new OS installation.
    Could someone help please?
    Thanks.

Ok as I said i unfortunately inherited the computer, so I was not the one to go through the install of Arch.

The last upgrade was probably performed around a year ago. Please let me know any other specific information that would be useful.

  • Iphone not charging after attempt to upgrade to 3.1.3

I tried unsuccessfully yesterday (2nd time) to upgrade to the latest software version 3.1.3. The upgrade failed, and I believe error code was 16. Now, my IPhone has low battery, itunes won't recognize it, and when I turn iphone on, a picture describing connecting the usb to Itunes appears.
    Please help.

While it does not mention error code 16 specifically, this KB article talks about failed update attempts and how to correct them. See if this helps you.

  • IPhone won't restore after attempted os4 upgrade

Like everyone else, I started updating last night (well this morning, at 1am) and after an hour of nothing happening, I impatiently unplugged the iphone, and wiped the phone, in an attempt to speed it up (at this point I hadn't read that other people were having similar problems)
After 7 hours of sleep the phone had still not restored successfully. The iPhone itself is stuck at 2/3 complete and iTunes says "Restoring iPhone software" and was stuck at what looked like 95% complete.
After an hour, it became stuck at around 97%. iTunes still works as I can use it to play songs using the keyboard controls and it does not offer me the option of force quitting (unless I use the force quit menu). I tried unplugging the phone again, and trying again, in case something somewhere had frozen.
The phone then asks to be plugged into iTunes, where it attempts to restore back to factory settings. It quickly restores until both phone and tunes get stuck at the exact same position.
I'm over an hour away from an Apple store.. Any suggestions?
And while I'm asking, will o2/carphone warehouse accept this phone as a trade in on Thursday when I go to buy the iPhone 4, or will they only accept fully working phones?
    Thanks in advance.

    Finally it updated to iOS5.
But EVERYTHING has disappeared off my iPhone. Music, photos, movies, podcasts, all installed apps.

  • Firefox will not open after attempting to upgrade to v5, sys restore didn't help

Was running 3.6 with no problems, but trying to upgrade today apparently broke it. The upgrade failed for some reason (the old .exe is still the only one in the Firefox folder & I can't find any files newer than April 2010 in there), but no matter how I try to run it, nothing happens - Firefox will not open, period. I tried reverting to last week with sys restore, scanning for malware with Malwarebytes, but still nothing happens. I'm using WinXP 5.1 media edition SP2 (yes, it's been around a few years but it works for me). I'm now using Chrome which seems to run just fine, tho I miss all my plugins.

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode

also check if [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firewalls Firewall] or/and other security software blocking firefox start (like ad-blocker, web-accelerator etc).
[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Kill_application With Firefox completely closed] (probably because you can not start it), open the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory application folder] (by default, C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox on Windows) rename firefox.exe to firefox1.exe, then double-click firefox1.exe. If Firefox runs without problems, it could indicate that your firewall is blocking Firefox.
