Dead motherboard battery?

what can affect? can it prevent correct booting?can stop the video card from working?

Hi Dr.Monti-
A dead battery can affect many things. Considering the cost and ease of replacement it is a cheap and dirty fix if it works.

  • Where Do Dead Motherboards Go When They Die?

    Greetings,
What happens to dead motherboards when they are replaced? I need a peice off of one. It is a peice I can handle the soldering of. My warranty is expired.
    Thanks

From experience these are often scrapped. eBay is a good source for picking up 'dead' motherboards and other surplus equipment. Especially useful for spares etc.

  • 2010 mini logic board reset with dead coin battery

2010 mini will not see ram on start up; one beep & one blink. and again every 3-5 seconds. thats all. would, or could a  dead auxillary battery cause this ? have replaced ram with known good ram.
mini will not post, boot etc:

I doubt it's the battery, I haven't seen that cause what you're seeing.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2674 lists that it's bad or no ram.
So, it's either the ram isn't fully seated, the ram is bad, or the ram slot on the mlb is bad.

  • Dead PB Battery causing system operation issues ??

Hi, I bought a 1Ghz DVI Titantum G4 on Craigslist over the weekend. The system has what appears to be a completely dead PB battery that is 5+ years old (there is writing on the back of the battery "May 2005").
It came with a 3rd party 45W adapter/charger and the system will run from that just fine.
Mac OSX 10.4.11 says the battery is charged at 96%, but when I try to run the PB from the battery, nothing happens. I press the little button on the bottom of the battery and it indicates a fully charged battery. However the System Profiler shows no amperage from the battery on the power portion of the profiler. I checked the PRAM battery with a multimeter and it still has a charge.
Will leaving this apparently dead PB battery in the system cause other operational issues ? Any thoughts ?
    Thanks

Keeping a dead battery in the computer won't cause any problems, but the fact that it's dead will, of course, mean it won't serve to prevent certain kinds of problems that wouldn't arise if it were a good battery.
In particular, you probably won't be able to unplug the AC adapter and transport the Powerbook for more than a handful of minutes before the PRAM battery is completely drained, and then the drained PRAM battery may prevent the machine from starting up until it is recharged — which will go very slowly if a dead main battery is in place and the computer is trying in vain to recharge that too. The main battery gets charging priority, and the PRAM battery gets charged after the main battery is full. If the main battery never charges, the PRAM battery may not either, unless the main battery is removed.
It's also true that in the event of an AC power outage while you're working, the dead battery won't fulfill its usual function as an uninterruptible power supply. The computer will instantly shut down, and whatever you're working on that hasn't been saved will be irrevocably lost. If the battery were good, you might not even notice the outage.
If the computer is just going to sit on a desk and be permanently connected to AC power, you can leave the dead battery in it — except after a power outage, when you'll need to remove it for 5-6 hours to give the PRAM battery time to recharge in its absence. On the other hand, the only real reason to keep a dead battery in the machine is to prevent foreign matter or objects from getting inside the battery compartment. There's no other advantage to having it in there.

The PD11 diode on the motherboard (labeled AV ?) was burned, so i replaced it with no luck.
I dont know what the forward voltage drop for the diode that was burned; does anyone know?
And where to buy a motherboard ? (is it expencive?)

  • Problems with stuck/dead pixels, battery life, ICS, and other problems

    Stuck/Dead Pixels:
I bought my Droid Razr at around the 21st of December last year. On or around Christmas, I found a bright red pixel on the very bottom of my screen. Unlucky for me, I was leaving for Florida on Christmas Night. I got back on December 31st. Sometime in the first week of this year, I visited my verizon store and told the customer service lady that I had a dead pixel on my screen and had just bought it. But, she told me that she needed the manager to fix this and there was no manager there. For the next week I was busy with school and sports etc and was not able to go back to the store. It was now past my 14 day return period. So I decided, its only one pixel, most people won't notice it anyway. So here I am 5 months later, just starting to discover more pixels dying on my screen. I now have the one bright red one, two light blue ones, and one dark red. I have no idea what the return policy is on defective phones, and the verizon site is designed so that you can't find anything. And an FYI, I have tried stuck pixel removers and other apps, which  haven't been successful.
    Battery Life:
I have also been finding more problems with my phone. The battery life is terrible when 4G and even 3G are on. I actually see no difference in battery consumption between 3G/4G.  My battery dies  about 4-5X faster when data is turned on, compared to using no data. I know it isn't because of the apps I installed since when I use WiFi, the battery is alright. I also make sure that my RAM isn't above 400MB, so that the processor doesn't use a lot of battery. I feel like I completely wasted my money buying the Razr. Mainly because of the fact that the Razr Maxx was announced two weeks later, which has about 80% more battery. Not only this, but I've seen the Razr selling for only ONE PENNY on amazon over the past month and it still is. I payed $300 on my Razr.
    Ice Cream Sandwich:
After these major problems comes another one, that I bet all Razr and Razr Maxx customers are still thinking about. When will I get Ice Cream Sandwich? It is very disappointing when you are told that you will be getting an upgrade in early 2012, and are still wondering where your upgrade is 5 full months in. From what I understand, we won't see an upgrade until the end of June, since Motorola has posted on their website that "rollouts" would begin in the second quarter. Even if they release it by the end of June, when will it get to your phone? Maybe another week or two for some people. This is another thing that I feel I wasted my money on. My brother told me to get the Nexus because of ICS, but I trusted Motorola that they would upgrade my phone in a timely manner. WRONG.
    Phone Freezing:
One more problem that I've had is that the phone will freeze. Usually you only need to turn the screen off and on, but once in a while, you have to completely reboot your phone. When I was coming back from Florida, right as I was about to get home, my phone completely froze. I was about to go return it, but after about 15-20 minutes, it became unfrozen.
    Motion Sensor not functioning:
Another problem, an annoying one, is that sometimes the motion sensor that controls portrait and landscape mode will just stop working. Some of the games I play are completely dependent on the motion sensor. It is very embarrassing  when you are trying to show off to an iPhone friend and major components of your phone aren't working. They always tell me "why didn't you get an iPhone?". And I really just wanted to have a phone that didn't look like everyone else's, but I guess that comes at a cost. When the motion sensor stops working, I have to shut down my phone and restart, which takes a couple minutes.
    Problems with camera:
My last problem would be with the camera. Sometimes if you bring the camera close to something, like a barcode, it will keep trying to focus, but never will. Another problem is photo quality in low light situations. It seems like the camera can't focus because it goes from being very dark into being bright because of the flash. I doubt this can be fixed because it's hardware, but a potential fix could be having the option to keep the LED light on during picture mode, that way the camera will be able to focus correctly.
    In Conclusion:
I really just want someone to tell me how to return my phone for a new one, due to the dead pixels. I also wish I could be upgraded to the Razr Maxx because of the poor battery life on the Razr, but from what other people are saying, that probably won't happen. And finally, if anyone has more info about Ice Cream Sandwich, that would be awesome.

Well since it's a Manufacturing Error it should Fall under your Warranty if you got one with your Razr. You know you can Call C.S. an they can Assist you with the Matter on it.. Just remember to have another phone so they can Trouble shoot the One that is Experiencing the Issue an when you talk to them go over thing. An they should send you C.G.A.N unless they request you to send it in before you get anther one. If you feel Better going to the Store try that. And Good Luck..

Hi my I phone has just gone dead it has about 50% charge and wont turn on. It dont seem to take a charge either?
Any ideas my whole business revolves around this bloody thing with out it I am *********
    Can some one help please??

    Hello, gypsumspring.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are the best resources to go through when experiencing this issue.
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

  • Fried motherboard, battery still charging?

It was almost 12 days ago when I accidentally spilled hot water all over my keyboard and the computer automatically shut down. I have already tried to save it by keeping it in a box of rice and silica packs, but after a week it still would not turn on. My motherboard probably fried from the water, as my brother reported that he saw the marks when he opened the macbook that I bought last year.
Out of curiosity, I plugged in my power cord and strange enough, the green light still turned on. It does seem a bit faint though, but I just wanted to know if there's still hope of it coming back to life if I continue to wait it out? My warranty is done, but I know Apple wouldn't fix a water spill under warranty anyways.

    Hi
I just wanted to know if there's still hope of it coming back to life if I continue to wait it out?
Rather unlikely, I'd say... the charging part (even assuming it's working normally) is a separate little board on (at least some) mbp's.
Liquid inside, even just water, often needs dismantling/cleaning rather than just drying out, pre-suppsoing no actual damage to components.
On the upside, such as there is - parts fetch (sometimes) silly amounts on ebay & elsewhere - you've got perhaps a good battery, top & bottom case, lid, drives & fans maybe, display, keys, etc etc
Ok, it needs dismantling to get the best amount, but buying a couple of screwdrivers & watching an iFixit video could get you a few hundred $. Even if you don't want to strip it, someone'll buy it for spares & do the same thing.

  • T510 Start button dead, but battery alive

It's a T510 (4313-CTO) Win7Pro/64, new in June. When new I could start up on either AC or battery (just like a REAL laptop). Now, it runs fine on both battery  (good batt life) and AC, but will only start on AC. If I "jump start" with a quick bump from the power cord while pressing the start button it leaps to life and works for hours. My battery number is not one of those on the firmware upgrade list. I don't know if I am dealing with a Lenovo problem, an Intel problem, or some obscure Windows setting that has been changed.
Much has happened since June. After installing another hoard of updates to Lenovo, Windows, Java, Adobe, Firefox, Intel, antivirus, etc, etc, I began to get BSOD's (#50-hardware). When I called Lenovo Tech Support looking for help to diagnose whether I was dealing with a rootkit or a bad update they sent out a UPS truck, snatched the computer, and had it back to me almost before I hung up the phone. I couldn't tell from their return ticket whether they replaced the motherboard or "adjusted" it, but it didn't matter a whole lot, because nothing was changed. After more weeks of trying to fix it on my own I gave up and punched the Reinstall button. Now, it won't start on battery power, but is seems to work fine, otherwise. Problem is, I bought a PORTABLE, and a generator in a backpack isn't my idea of personal attire. Unfortunately, I was so busy with trying to just keep in running that I never tried to start it on battery power after it was returned from the service depot, so I don't KNOW it worked before the reinstall. Anybody have any ideas? Anybody want to see an almost new Thinkpad on Facebook being  cut into little pieces with a chainsaw?

I assume you have a warranty. It is time to use it.

  • Possible dead Wallstreet battery

Okay, I've got a 233 mhz Wallstreet. I run it now & then. last time was about a month or so ago.
The battery's not bad. No clock battery, so it tends to drain the battery keeping the settings when shut down.
Last time, it was fine, provided a good 1 1/2 hours of activity. However, I just started it again today, and no juice at all, no charging either. The media bay control strip shows no indication that the system is even detecting the battery - it says the bay is empty. Floppy modules are detected, and the cd bay doesn't detect it either.
Add to that, the battery doesn't even have the blinky "I'm about to die" single light anymore.
So, I'm guessing it might be permanently deceased, but I'd like to know for sure before I go and buy a replacement.
Is there any way to sort of jump-start it? I ran Battery Reset, and that had no effect.
If the battery sits unused and uncharged for a while, can it drain beyond it's ability to work?
    Thanks

    Good Morning, Andrew,
    Thanks for the forgiveness.
My friend whose three Wallstreets I maintain has two batteries that were original to the computers, bought in 1998, and they are still good for a couple of hours. Pretty amazing. System Profiler does not report on these old machines like it does with newer ones so all I have to go by is that they still run light-duty (web mail and surfing) tasks for a couple of hours. The new one from Global (the link I posted) reads around four hours.
Yes, you can certainly ignore these items if you are running the unit as a desktop machine. The PRAM battery is cheaper (I installed two of these) and would be useful in case of a power failure or a full main battery meltdown. Although the info around here is that the PRAM battery can be dead and not cause problems, I found two problems in working on the WSs that went away after i put in new PRAM batts:
    1) One computer would not give a display if I booted from retail OSX install disks, Apparently, OSX wanted a different screen resolution than OS9 for the installer, and OS9 could not hold the res settings with a dead PRAM batt. New battery--no more problems.
    2) One computer whose battery would work normally in the computer with the new PRAM battery would not work properly in a computer that had the original PRAM batt. The computer would shut down immediately on going off wall power with the main batt reading 100 percent. It would then read zero, then would not charge at all. Then I'd come back to the computer a short time later and find it showing 100 percent and the cycle started all over again. Still the battery worked flawlessly in the two other machines. The owner insisted I install a new PRAM battery even though all the symptoms pointed to a bad power card or PMU. Whaddayouknow? The main battery behaves normally now in that machine, too. That one blew me away. I had no clue that this would help and, to this day, cannot quote you a technical reason for this success.
Installing a new PRAM battery is a semi-pain in that you have to pop the top deck to get to it. The old machines develop brittle plastic after so many years and the odd of breaking some delicate part of the top deck is rather high.
If you are interested in reviewing the steps involved in changing the PRAM batt, review this most excellent take-apart guide:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Wallstreet/3
Clicking any photo therein gives you a nicely magnified view.
Not for the faint of heart, to be sure and requires a modified #00 Phillips screwdriver and a small Torx driver.
If the WS is not mission-critical, using it as a desktop for old times sake may be a good approach.
    Regards,
    Allan

  • Compaq CQ56-115DX Recalled Power Supply & Dead Motherboard

    Hello,
We currently have a Compaq CQ56-115DX in our shop that we are diagnosing. Currently the computer turns on and sits at a black screen while the caps lock light blinks repeatedly. Upon further research we have found that it may have an issue with the bios. We are unable to get anywhere past that black screen so we cannot update the bios. We have tried pulling the CMOS battery and letting it sit for a bit in hopes that it might reset the bios. Unfortunately that didn't work. We believe the motherboard is bad. Looking at the support page for more resources I saw that there was a recall on the power supply for this machine. I went through the confirmation pages and the adapter is one of the affected models. Is there a possibility that the power supply could have caused the motherboard issue?
    Thanks,
         ST

It is actually a recall on the cord from the power supply brick to the wall plug, not the brick itself. If that goes bad you just get no power at all so the power supply is not the likely culprit. Is there any evidence of melting or arcing on the power supply at the place where the wall cord plugs into the brick? Does it put out power to specs? I would agree with your motherboard diagnosis, by the way.

  • Dead motherboard?

I have problems with my MSI-KT6-FIS2R motherboard. I got the following components:
    MSI-KT6-FIS2R
    1x 512 No-Name RAM 400mhz
    Amd Barton 2800+
    1x 80 WDC, 1x 120 WDC and 1x 160GB WDC (all in IDE)
    Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600
    Coolemaster Aero7+
The cpu speed i ran was 11x200 with default vcore (the cpu temp was never ever over 60c)
When i built my pc for the first time i had a problem. I wouden't boot, only the fans started. So i checked the signals (the pci-bracket). It was 4 red signals. I checked in the manual and it sayd "CPU damaged or not corectly installed". I had no idea, so my uncle drove to a pc repair company. They fixed it. I don't know how. A few months later, when i was installing Windows XP the pc stoppd doing anything but the screen was black (it was, on) The fans, harddisks and all the stuff was on, but the pc had crashed. So i rebooted it, and a few minutes later it crashed the same way. I'd try to reboot it but with black screen :\ The pc is'nt going into bios or something, just black screen. I checked the signals. It was 4 red again. I have cleard the cmos with no luck, i took the BIOS battery out for a halfhour with no luck. I have also tryed another ddr-dimm (128mb 266mhz) with no luck, also tried to take off my CPU-cooler, and the cpu with no luck. :\
Sorry for my bad english. I am just a 14 year old boy from norway:)
    *desperate*
    Any ideas?

I wonder - I guess you have - if you have attached a cable coming from the PSU called the 4 pin 12 volt. It should be attached to the motherboard to give power to the processor. It looks like this in the end ::
I am afraid you also need a good PSU, as the big guys are saying.
    Ha det!
Harestua? :p Im Norwegish. One cable from the psu to directly to cpu-fan is that right? I did the same with my old powersupply. But one cable is missing with my old PSU one small cable to the motherboard. I don't know why i got that on the other, but i have no cable like that on my old.

  • IPod dead? Battery dead, will not charge...

    Hi,
I've got a video iPod here, a black one, 30 GB. It's my dad's iPod and he was using it a few days ago but the battery is dead. I'm trying to charge it for him by plugging it into my Mac with his USB cable, and it doesn't power up, doesn't charge, doesn't sync... nothing! He usually charges and syncs it with USB and I've tried several cables (my iPhone cable plus another cable). Nothing seems to work.
Any idea what to try next... or is it just dead!?

Oh, I figured it out. I had to plug it in and THEN press the reset key combo. It's charging now...
