Dead Pixel on Macbook Retina.

Hi,
I just got a refurbish Macbook Retina 15 inches (2012 version) a month ago and I already have a dead pixel in the middle of my screen. Is it covered by the warranty, should I go to the store to have it fixed.
Thank you very much.

Yes, you can do that, rather than spending $700 on the new display assembly. Its not that noticeable, you see....
Also, there is no guarantee that the newly replaced screen will be free of problems. There are high chances of getting a much more defective screen again.
Apple’s display replacement has always been like a lottery system. You may get Gold or else a Lemon....
I would strongly suggest not to bother to change the display. If I were in your shoes then even I would have done the same thing.
Hope this helps...

  • Moving dead pixel on Macbook Retina display!

So like the title says, I have a moving, (what appears to be) dead pixel. At the very beginning, I thought it was in my head so I began taking pictures. Sure enough i noticed a pattern. Every day or two it moves down ever so slightly. Its been about 2 weeks since it first appeared and in total it has only moved about 0.5cm (but it has moved nonetheless).
So basically what I want to know is if there is any fix for this that doesn't involve replacing the entire screen. I did get on to a local store that sells apple products who gave me a ridiculous quote of 1000 euros to fix this issue!
The fact that it moves, has made me think it is not a dead pixel. But if not then what exactly is it? The laptop itself it now about a year and a half old so the warranty is gone!
    Any comments/suggestions welcome!

  • Dead Pixel on Macbook Pro 15' Retina

    Hey there Apple community,
Recently I purchased a 15' Retina Macbook pro for $2,500 (AU). I have owned this Macbook for approximately 4 months, with no issues what-so-ever.
Until, 2 days ago I was working on a project (I am stuying Graphic Design.) when I zoomed into a black area in photoshop, to discover a little green dot near the centre of my screen. At first, I believed it was a peice of fluff so I cleaned my whole screen. With no success I finally came to the conclusion it was a dead pixel. Over the two days it has became progressively worse.
Unfortunately, when I bought my Macbook I did not purchase Apple Care. So my question to you is, if I take my Macbook into an Apple store will I be able to get it fixed/replaced as it is a manufactuerer fault?
    Thanks for your time,
    Charles.

As others have stated you have a standard 1 year warranty and do not at this time need Applecare extended warranty to get your Mac fixed for free.
Also you can still buy the Applecare extended warranty. You have the full standard oine year warranty period to do that. IE Buy the Applecare extended warranty.
I suggest you do it sooner then later as it also extends the normal 90 day phone support to the full 3 year period of the standard and extended warranty coverage.

  • Dead pixels on Macbook Pro Retina Display and keyboard scratches.

Since the purchase of my Macbook Pro with Retina Displey 15" early February 2013 it has gained 5 dead pixels on the screen. If I take it to the Apple Store are they going to tell me it's my own fault and not help?
I also found a scratch on the <H> key on the keyboard, which has removed a little bit of the black coating, allowing the backlight to shine through. Does anyone know of a solution to this, or if apple are able to help? I have already tried writing over it in black sharpie pen, but it doesn't help.

Apple has some system they go by to determine how many dead pixels are 'acceptable' on a display - it's not your fault.
You may be able to get a replacement key from -> https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/. Since Apple will probably say it was caused by user damage, you'll have to pony up the $5 for the key.

  • Dead Pixels on Macbook Pro with Retina

Hi!  I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Retina.  I just noticed a white pixel on a black background...  i.e., dead pixel!  What do I do?  This is a brand new laptop!  Seriously not even 2 months old.
    Help!

The MacBook Pro is in warranty, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take it to an Apple Store or reseller to get it repaired. You won't have to pay anything

  • Dead pixel on MacBook Pro?

I'm getting really upset about this. I bought a 13" MacBook Pro w/ Retina about three or four months ago. Now I have dead pixels. The guiness at the Apple Store informed me that one or two dead pixels was within the quality control standards. He then proceeded to let me know that he could replace my screen, but there may or may not be more dead pixels on that screen and eventually they would cut me off because it meets Apple's "standards."
So I guess I actually have a few questions:
Is this a problem with all Mac displays? Or is this specific to the Retina display?
Should I get it fixed now, or wait for more and more pixels to die?
Are there any "at home" remedies? (Other than massaging the screen, because I already tried that)
I know Apple will replace products, but would they let me exchange it for a Pro without Retina if this is a retina specific problem?
This may all sound petty, but this computer was extremely expensive and I'm really not happy about this issue.

    1) All displays. Retina display is no different in terms of composition, it simply has a higher pixel density. It is still an LCD display. Perhaps the fact that more pixels are being crammed into the same surface area would raise the probability of a pixel failure. But, it would be safe to say, no.
    2) Now. This is an anomoly, not a major issue. There would be no advantage in my opinion to wait. See below for Apple's 'standards' regarding dead pixels.
    3) Not applicable / No. Apple's warranty only covers your model. There is no exchange program. They will service your display free of charge within the one year warranty period. During this period, you can opt at any time for an extended warranty (Applecare), which would extend hardware coverage for two subsequent years.
    4) Not petty, extremely legitimate. Expensive machine that should work as intended. This is why Apple's warranty coverage is more extensive than any other major CPU manufacturor. You are paying for a top of the line product, and the servicing needs to be commensurate with the price.

  • InDesign appears pixelated on MacBook retina display

I have just installed InDesign CS6 ver8.0.1 on my new MacBook Pro. It appears all blurry and pixelated on the retina display. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

    No.
CS6 is not optimized for retina displays. You'll need to move to
    Creative Cloud for that.

  • Dead pixel on MacBook Pro 15"

Hi, my Macbook Pro 15" has one dead pixel on the top right of the screen. It's a tiny red dot, and it is seen very clear when the screen does dark (like when you run FrontRow). Is it in the warranty condition? Thanks

Probably wasn't a "dead" pixel; it was a stuck pixel. A dead pixel would appear black and is usually not revivable, whereas a stuck pixel can be red, green, or blue, and rubbing the LCD can sometimes bring them back to life.

  • Dead pixel on macbook pro screen

i have a dead pixel on my screen what should i do ? and are they going  to do with my macbook ???
    thank you

Is it brand new?  You have 14 day return policy.
    Otherwise
I would take it to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider  (AASP) for evaluation, or call your nearest Apple Contact Center. Visit the Genius Bar at the Apple Retail Store,  make a reservation.

  • Stuck/Dead Pixel on Macbook Pro?

I've had my Macbook Pro since July 4, and I just noticed today that there is a weird part of my screen that remains like a transparent white color. It's a very small area around the size of the tip of a sharpie. It looks larger that a single pixel, but its not huge. For example, if the screen is red, that part of the screen is a lighter shade of red. It's the same for all other colors like orange, green, etc. Even when its all white, the little area stands apart. I ran Pixel Check, and I notice the small area for every test except on black (when all pixels are on). What can I do?
    Thanks

I had a similar situation, but in my case it was just one little hot pixel it appears that you have more than just one. I’ve called Apple Care and demanded and exchange they hesitated in the beginning and try to convince me that this kind of issues are common. However, an hour later of continuing pressure I have talked with the manager in charge and I’ve got the exchange, the new laptop came in without any issues. My advise to you is to call Apple Care and demand for an exchange and if the “1st layer” will not work with just ask for the manager.
Apple should stand behind their product, good luck to you

  • Dead pixels appeared on Macbook Pro Retina 15"

    Hi,
Bought my Macbook on September / 2014 and so far no problems.
Unfortunately today a lot of dead pixels appeared on the center of my screen !
I tried to clean it but it seems to be behind the screen actually. Tried to reboot and reset SMC as request by Apple support, with no success : (
They suggested i bring it to the nearest service center, problem is i use my machine to work and it probably will take weeks to repair.
Is there any other solution ? Why this happened ? My previous Macbook was not Retina and never had this kind of issue.
I took a photo of the screens while in the google website :
    Very disappointed

A 15 ft display boy that is big. Perhaps a smaller display with fewer pixels is in order.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina 2013 has a Dead Pixel

I just noticed my MacBook Pro Retina has a dead pixel in it. It is black then changes to white when on a black screen. (It's just one) It just came out of no where, and I wanted to know if I was still in Warranty? And if not how mush would it cost to repair it?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac is in warranty if you purchased it less than a year ago. In this case, you can try taking the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to see if they can replace the screen, although I have seen cases in which Apple refused to replace it if there was only one dead pixel. You do not lose anything by trying this.
Before taking the MacBook, make a backup of your files on an external drive with Time Machine.

  • Dead pixels on 2014 refreshed 15" Retina MacBook Pros

I am a long time Apple user and I own a few Apple products including a White MacBook. Recently, I ordered a top of the line refreshed retina MacBook Pro through the education store and it appeared to have a few dead pixels. Sure the defect was very minor. Not noticeable for most people. But I am extremely sensitive to such anomalies. When I drop $3.5K+ on the absolute maximum configuration (15" rMBP, 2.8GHz, 1TB disk) that Apple has to offer on these notebooks, I expect ZERO defects. Anyway, I returned the rMBP to Apple and ordered a new one. It too had a few dead pixels. I returned that too. I was very frustrated. I thought about this for a while and suspect that it's because I bought the notebooks at a discounted rate from the Apple Education store that they are selling these "A" grade screens rather than the A+ grade ones. I have ordered a third notebook not from the education store. I'll see what quality display I get with it.
FYI, the first notebook had a LG display while the second one had a samsung. Both had very similar pixel anomalies. I would gladly pay full retail if I get a flawless screen as I'll be spending over 14 hours staring at it. For someone whose going to drop $3.5K on a notebook, $300 don't matter much.

Take it back in and gently but firmly try to persuade a senior supervisor to authorize a replacement. Had it been stuck on black, would have been easier on the persuasion, but you may get lucky.
