Dead Power Computing machine with files I need to access

I have an ancient Power Computing machine that died this week after a full and fruitful life. Since I have my Mac Book Pro most of my files are on my new machine, but some old stuff I would like to recover. I am pretty sure the HD is OK, so what is the best way of getting info from the SCSI drive on the old machine to a new one?
I have several Performas, one of which has an internal SCSI CD drive. Could I attach my old SCSI hard drive, after modifying its address, to the SCSI CD internal cable? Then via ethernet to a G4 running OS10.3. What else can I do?
Many thanks,
Geoff

Although running the Mac OS, the Mac clones (Power Computing's "Power Tower" and Motorola's "StarMax" series) adopted the cost-saving hardware designs of the PC platform, specifically the use of both IDE hard drives and optical drives. Your hard drive is an IDE type with a 40-pin connection. Check your local computer or electronics stores for an IDE-to-USB adapter, that will plug into the back of the drive and connect to your new Mac via a USB cable. A separate power supply is also included. This is the easiest way to temporarily transfer data from older drives, and it eliminates the added expense of an external housing that would accomplish the same thing. The latter choice would be a consideration, if the hard drive were of significant capacity to justify its continued use for backup duty.

I tried recovery software but had no luck!

You reformatted the drive in your computer. The backup files you want to access were overwritten when you re-formatted the drive. They are gone. There may be data recovery services that can get them back. Search google if you want. This has absolutely nothing to do with using an iPhone at this point. You deleted files on your computer...

  • OS X Tiger Computer Reset with File Loss

Hello.  I am posting this on behalf of a friend:
The computer (a last generation 12" PowerBook) has been working fine for some time with no problems to speak of.  Mail was open and files emails were visible.  However, when clicking on them they returned an error message similar to "Not connected to server" even though they were stored locally.  Quitting mail and restarting it did nothing.  Eventually the computer was restarted.
After restart, no icons existed on desktop, dock was completely reset to factory icons as well.  When opening finder, the Desktop, Applications, Documents, etc folders no longer had their normal icons, but instead just normal folder icons.  All system and applications preferences have been reset, including trackpad preferences, Mail settings, address book data, and Safari preferences and bookmarks.  More disturbingly,  all data in Movies, Pictures, and Music are gone.  Data in Documents folder remains.  None of the data previously on the desktop is to be found, whether it's going through the home folder to the desktop folder, etc.
Spotlight searches turn up none of the missing files.  Nor does a search through terminal.
Subsequent restarts do nothing to fix the problem.  Computer had been functioning perfectly up until the above events, and the computer had not been making any clicking noises, unusual sounds, etc.
Can anyone suggest anything to help, any way to roll back, reset the file system structure, etc.  Clearly, the user is incredibly distressed and nothing we've found explains either why this happened or how to correct it.  Thank you, in advance, for any help.

Sorry gang...  Took it to a GeniusBar, they re-installed Tiger, and it worked...
Turned out what had happened was the user renamed her home folder, and so when she restarted it couldn't find it...
Why the OS would let you (even as an admin) rename the home folder without even prompting you to ask if you're trying to change your user name is beyond me.
I'll leave this here in case it happens to anyone else.  Cheers.

  • I have just purchased an iMAC. O/S is Lion. I just cannot access the files in my Microsoft network drive which my  macpro snow leopard has no problem. Looks like it is just the Lion O/S has the problem.  The file I needed to access are my photo files.

I have an iMAC running Lion cannot access my Microsoft Network drive.  It sees it on Finder but said connection failed.  By other Macpro Laptop which run Leopard has no problem at all. It lreads and load my photos from the RAID Drive. I am sure some asked the question before but it is new to me. That was the reason I am not upgrading my Macpro to Lion yet.  was it a bug in Lion networking area?
    Thanks for the help !

You need to move to Windows 7, because Apple is now releasing a new OS X version annually and it's playing havoc with people's hardware and software.
Windows 7 will get support until 2020, that's 8 years of software stability, however you do need to make System Restore disks, boot disk and another on a hard drive to self restore (like TimeMachine is for OS X)
Apple has no plans to change their currrent behavior as all they care about is selling new hardware with a shiny new OS X verison on it.
If you wait to move, what will happen is you'll lose that full 8 years and will have to swtich to a newer Windows sooner
Windows 7 machines are still widely avaialble, despite Windows 8 (a failure) being pushed currently.
Running three OS X operating systems on one machine is quite a chore reserved for only seasoned computer geeks, then it's only going to last X months as the next OS X version will be released, then the next a year after that.
Another method would be to get a virtual machine software (virtualbox is free) and install Windows 7 into that to ease your transitition if you cant' spring for a Windows 7 machine, preferablly a tower that will last a long time.
Here is a method to run Snow Leopard in Parallels, however it's a unapproced hack and not for the comptuer newbie.

We have no control over Apple's OS X release cycle, nor the third party developers who make their own decisions what to support.
Our only choice as users to stop using both products and seek software/hardware stability.

  • Time Machine backup files not able to access

Before Reinstalling  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, I have made my WD My passport 1TB as Recovery HD and then took time machine backup.
After Re-Installing  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, I am not able to see any of the content in my HD.
I tried to connect Timemachine using Migration Assitant to connect my HD but still it is taking long time.
How can I get back my data in HD to reinstalled Mac.?

There are actually 3 passwords on the Time Capsule - assuming it has the same setup as my Airport Extreme Base Station.
One password for the WiFi connection.
One password to access setup of the device
One password for access to the storage drive - most people leave the check-box to just use the base-station setup password again.
And, as I said before, you also have the option to encrypt your TM backups.  So even if somebody runs off with the device and breaks in to the disk, it will all be garbage without the TM password.
This is the screen as it is on my computer:
As you can see, to access my drive I have it set to use the device setup password.
Here is a screen shot of the other options:

  • Row with visibility expression - need to access values in other rows if present

I have a row that I added and set its visibility with an expression since I want to handle its display differently than the others in its group.  So, to calculate the value I need to refer to other rows.
The report has its first column with names of the "metrics" we are reporting on.
    Shoe Volume
    Shoe Revenue
    Shoe Revenue / Order
Its that last one that Id like to use an expression based on the other two, but that seems rather messy in SSRS.
The data comes from a stored procedure, and Im thinking thats a better place to handle this, rather than SSRS.
Is there any decent solution to this in the report with an expression?

It is a little confusing... You say that you wish to hide a row in your report based on other values in the table. That is simple to do. Just use IIf statement that will return true when you want to hide the row. Something like =IIf(Fields!Other.Value =
    17.7, True, False).
You say that your first column has the names of Metrics and you give three names. Are all three in a single column or is it three columns?
You also state that it is the 3rd of these that you wish to use an expression with. Does that mean that you want to hide that column and not the row? or you want to hide that column as well? Or that you want to hide this one value in the row and not the
    entire row?
In any case, IIf statement is most often used for Hide expressions because an item (row, column, cell, table, etc.) is either hidden or visible... 2 states... and IIf returns a Boolean. You refer to other fields in the same scope using a Fields!Field_Name.Value
syntax so simply check if the value from the other cell meets your criteria to hide.

  • Which files are needed for connection to database in 11gR2?

I'm confused about the following files:
    sqlnet.ora

If I understand correctly, sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora can exist in both client and Oracle database server and listener.ora should only exist in Oracle database server. I guess host file can exist in both client and Oracle database server.
I'm trying to understand which of the files are needed to access Oracle 11gR2 database using different tools such as
sqlplus, SQL Developer, and Database Control on Oracle database server or from a client machine.
If I'm on an Oracle database server, which of the files are needed for accessing 11gR2 database on that server for the different tools?

Some of the config parms available to it apply only to the server side, some apply only to the client side, some apply to both.
tnsnames.ora is used by client processes to resolve a connect alias to a specicific host, port, and service. It is used ONLY by the client side of tns. You see it on host machines because those machines can also run client processes.
host file. Oracle doesn't know what this file is. Oracle doesn't give a flying fig about this file. It is used by the standard network software in the OS to resolve a name to an IP address. The only reason you even see it discussed in the Oracle world is because Oracle TNS sits on top of the standard OSI network stack, and uses it. Thus, if your tnsnames file has an entry like:
    houston =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = vmlnx01)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVICE_NAME = houston)
#==========tns will never know or care where vmlnx01 is. The request will be packaged and sent to the standard network stack with a request to "route this package to vmlnx01, wherever that is.". The OS network stack will then resolve 'vmlnx01' to an ip address, by one of several possible methods. ONE of those methods is to look it up in the local hosts file.

If you have a license for Lightroom, you should be able to reinstall it from an installer disc or re-download it from Adobe after explaining the situation and clarifying the license issues. Either will be simpler than trying to extract and install it from a TM backup of a different Mac, I think. If it's anything like other Adobe products, it has bits and pieces all over the place that you'll have to find and put in their right places on your girlfirend's Mac.

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

    Re Time Machine
I have an external  hard drive with files I backed up manually over the past 2 years 1TB of memory.
I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?
can I split it the drive in two partitions?
    Also
as I have two separate Macbook Pro's- one older than the other.
    OSX 10.68
    the other is
    OSX 10.75
can I back them up separately?
or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

  • Problem with File Vault account after restoring from Time Machine Backup

my old 13" macbook 2.4 running OS X 10.5.4 was recently stolen and I've purchased a refurbished 13" macbook pro 2.66 running OS X 10.6. On booting up for the first time I restored from my Time machine backup (via setup assistant) and opted for migration of all files, applications, user profiles etc.
My main user (with admin privileges) is normally encrypted with File Vault but when I've tried to log in it's coming up with error(3) message. any ideas as to the problem and how to fix?

Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):

I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:

    followed by this one:

If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • Need advice about IBM p6 machine with Oacle10g (release 2)

    Dear Friends ,
We r going to make some changes to our production server . So we need some suggestions from urs . Look at the following scenario which I have to describe and plz give me some suggestions :
    1) Presently our production server is running in IBM AIX 5.3 OS (Power 5 machine) server with Oracle 10g (Release 2) .
    2) Now we are going to prepare our DR server with IBM AIX 6.1 OS (Power 6 machine) server with Oracle 10g (Release 2) Database . Now is it compatible to run Oracle10g (Relase 2 ) with the power 6 (AIX OS version 6.1) machine ?
    3) And Finally we will synchronize (as well as clustering) our production server to our DR server with the above setup . Is it possoble to do ?
If there any prob , then plz give some advices . ... ..

    Hi,
what do you mean with 3) Synchronize???
    What I would do:
    1) Create a physical standby on your new server (RMAN does the job for you)
    2) Do a simple switchover - your new server is now the production server
    3) If you mean with clustering: Cold failover clustering??? Then yes, this would be possible afterwards
If you mean: RAC clustering then you'd install clusterware in step1 as well plus a 1-node-RAC - after upgrading your 5.3. server to 6.1 you'd add it as a 2nd node to the existing one node RAC
