Dead Router?

I believe I have a dead router. When you go to plug the router in, the last 5 lights light up for about a quarter of a second and then hide, unless if a internet connection was detected with the router. But the power light plugged in does not show, only a very dim light. I looked some info online, and it may be bricked, but with the info I am looking at, I think it is worse than that. Also, when I connect the router to my computer, I get a 169.254.*.* IP address, and the computer says "Limited or No Connectivity." Someone... HELP!

Before doing the following steps, you have to connect the modem to the
router's Internet Port and the computer to the Ethernet Port Number 1.
1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for
another 30 Seconds.
3. Plug back the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button
for 30 Seconds.
4. Release the reset button.
Check the Ip address ... if not getting valid Ip ..assign the static Ip & try accessing the setup page ....

  • Dead router....again

Am I the only user that seems to have to buy a new linksys router every 8 months to a year?  I love linksys and will buy them forever since they tend to last longer than most routers out there, but I seem to have to buy a new one every year or so because the last one decided to die.
Before anyone asks, I own a small Managed I.T. business and use these on a regular basis.  I've done everything from the standard power cycling to flashing the router with the newest firmware.  The router is even well away from other items and has nothing nearby so overheating isn't an issue.
Right now my wrt160n has stopped working.  It drops all internet connection and now the wireless is completly dead.   Guess it's time to buy another.

Your router has lost it's configuration...You need to re-configure your router...

  • Confirmation of dead router

Hello, Merry XMAS all, last night my area experienced a power outage (not the first) and now my router does not appear to be working as expected. I am thinking the router is dead. I have performed a soft reset sever times and a hard reset numerous times, but the power LED appears to be flashing at a rate around 5 to 10 Hz, the LEDs for the four Ethernet connections and the WAN LED are flashing at a rate around 2 to 3 Hz in sync. According the the following link if the power LED is flashing it indicates the router may be dead or probably is. http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&thread.id=6874&view=by_date_ascending&page=2 From the ping activity I was able to capture the following: Request timed out. Is there a way to get to the router's configuration page or reflash the device? I am hoping a reflash my fix the device, but I can't flash the device without a valid address. Any suggestions or should I get another router and put a surge protector between the outlet and the device this time around? Thanks Mark

  • Updating firmware on multiple wireless router setup

Hi, I'm trying to take over support from a tech who's moved out of the area. There's abut 4 mixed of these wireless routers WRT300N's and WAP54G's in the house. I can see and update the firmware for the router at 192.168.1.1.., the other routers are connected through their network ethernet port. Is there any way via the wireless connection to access the other 3 to update their firmware? It would be great to do it from one location. I don't know what IP the installer set each of these up to.

To update the firmware you must know the IP address of the device, regardless whether you use a wired or wireless link.
You should also never do the update through a wireless link. A firmware update must not be interrupted. If it is interrupted you are likely to have a dead router afterwards. As wireless links tend to be far more unreliable then wired links it is always highly recommended to use wired links for the updates.
I would suggest you do a network scan or ping all IP addresses inside your LAN subnet. Check where you get responses and check the arp cache with "arp -a" to see what MAC addresses are behind those IP addresses. This should help you to find and identify the IP addresses of those other devices. If you cannot find them anywhere inside your LAN subnet it may well be that they have an arbitrary IP address somewhere else. In that case, probably the best option would be to reset the device to factory defaults and then reconfigure them.

  • How to force traffic though a chosen interface in Windows 8.1?

Windows 8.1 seems to be able to detect dead routes and picks up the default gateway or next best route for routing.
I have a requirement where I want traffic for specific destinations to "always" go through the Interface that I pick and if that interface is not providing a path from some reason then I want the communication to fail instead of switching to the
    next best interface.
How do I achieve this? I already tried EnableICMPRedirect and DeadGWDetectDefault registry settings and disabling Auto Metric on the interface through which I want to route this traffic.
    Any clues would help.
    Thanks
    GW

With PowerShell you should be able to view the applicable routes and modify them accordingly to alter this behavior:
    # you can determine your adapters with
    Get-NetAdapter
    -IncludeHidden
    # then you can see what routes are associated with what adapter interface (lets assume your wifi interface is 4 and your loopback is 1)
    Get-NetRoute
    -AddressFamily IPv4
    # you will get your specific interface index, destination prefix, nexthop and the routemetric
    # you can then set a specific route policy using:
    New-NetRoute
    -DestinationPrefix "200.200.200.200/32"
    -InterfaceIndex 1
    -RouteMetric 256
    New-NetRoute
    -DestinationPrefix "200.200.200.200/32"
    -InterfaceIndex 4
    -NextHop 10.1.1.1
    -RouteMetric 0
    # you can modify the configuration with:
    Set-NetRoute
    -DestinationPrefix "200.200.200.200/32"
    -InterfaceIndex 4
    -NextHop 192.168.10.1
    -RouteMetric 0
    # finally, you can remove the specific route or all the routes with:
    Remove-NetRoute
    -DestinationPrefix "200.200.200.200/32"
    -InterfaceIndex 1
    -Confirm:$false
    Remove-NetRoute
    -DestinationPrefix "200.200.200.200/32"
    -Confirm:$false

  • Newbie Q about terminal and telnet

Not sure this is the right forum but I posted on the osx server threads with no reply so here goes.
    Q. turning off the wan side telnet port on my router using telnet via the terminal.?
I've seen instructions some where about how to use telnet to turn off sip in a router re getting ichat to work. Can I close or stealth my telnet port in a similar way. also ping and ftp and 80 are open not stealth. (re shields up site.)
I'm used to seeing no real traffic over my old & possibly dead router unless I initiate it. I've just got the echolife hg520s over which their is continual if minor traffic and it bugs me.
Btw... in the firmwares http gui I've disabled the cwmp option and selected all wan side options as disabled including ping and telnet.??
    Thanks

This is very strange. Being the paranoid kind of guy that I am, whenever I go on business travel, I run nmap against my home network (I'd do it more frequently from the office, but my employer's IT Secret Police blocks almost all outgoing destination ports), and this last trip (last week) I found telnet 23, http 80, LM Social Server 1111 (what the heck is that?) and 52869 open. In Terminal, I typed telnet {myHomeDomainName} and got a login prompt to my modem! Previous nmap about one month prior all was ok. I freaked out.
Once back home, I could not close the ports, even though the modem's configuration page said that the only port forwarded was my ssh port (as desired) and that remote management was disabled. I hard reset the router, I reinstalled the firmware from the critical recovery disk image, and I reinstalled the firmware update -- multiple times. That would close 'em off, for about an hour or two. I was on the phone with my ISP (Qwest) about three or more times for about 45 mins per call, and then, mysteriously, the ports have closed with no interaction on my part and have remained closed thus far for two days now. (It just so happens we have a WAP at work for visitors, puts 'em outside our really restrictive firewall, but when there, you can't access anything inside the corporate LAN when you do that, but I affiliated to that WAP anyways so I could run nmap this afternoon during lunch.) So I'm wondering whether my ISP's Secret Police have a backdoor programmed into their firmware set for the DSL modems that they sell, but they shut it down (at least temporarily) since I caught 'em, well, caught somebody, with my ports open?
Check your firewall logs for unusual activity: in Terminal, as admin-privileged user, type
    +sudo cat /var/log/ipfw.log+
if unusual probes or activity, get on the phone with your ISP, ask why your modem config pages say your firewall is on and no ports are forwrded but telnet's open, and if you have unusual acitivity in those logs, ask 'em to start an investigation.

  • WRT400N data loss

Have new WRT400N router and 2 laptops running Windows/XP SP3.  Copied a 2.3GB folder of photos from PC A to PC B.  Lost 152 photos on 1st attempt (wired); 3 photos on 2nd attempt (wired); 8 photos on 3rd attempt (wireless).  Normally did 10-16GB machine-to-machine copies without a problem on old, now dead router.
When I copy the same folder to an external HDD or a memory stick, I lose no data.  When I move the memory stick to PC B and copy onto the internal HDD, there is no loss of data.  Anyone else having data loss problems with the WRT400N?  Or have any ideas?

Thanks, via_fan.  Have to admit that it took awhile to figure out that you wanted me to change router settings.  Guess that's why the Linksys forum calls me a "Newbie".
I did try your recommendations, but still have the same problem.  I have also made sure that the drivers for my 4 network adapters are the latest versions (one was a year out of date).  Followed by another test run; still a few missing photos.  Then I ran CHKDSK on both machines and tested again.  Still missing photos.  One lap top is on the road for a few days, so I have time to develp my next step.

  • Airport problem 2

since apple closed the previous port related to airport problems , now noone can put their experiences, that i think it can help apple to see the problem we are experiencing here. please put all the details so apple will read this and arrive to a good idea of what's going on.
    i have 2 mbp
    1 2.33 ghz ,2gb, 120gb 10.5.1
    2 2.0 ghz ,2gb, 120 gb 10.4.11
the laptop runing 10.4.11 is also aving issues with the wireless, so is not only the leopard one. now, i downgraded my 10.5.1 to 10.4.10 and i have no more wireless issues anymore with that laptop. so there's a problem in networking software design with 10.4.11 and 10.5 and 10.5.1 . that is what i experienced. i did not want to go back to windows, so i purchased a linux machine to survive junt in case apple will ..... but still have faith, just i'm waiting for months, like others are doing too.

There's another thread called "Airport Problem" that goes into extraordinary detail about the behavior he's experiencing. Since someone locked the thread it is now being pushed back by current updates to other threads, in this category, but I recommend going back and skimming the comments in that thread to get a better idea of what is going on. You can't miss it, it has 33,000 views and 530+ comments.
I have been experiencing similar wireless behavior. I installed Leopard 10.5.0 (as an update) and my wireless connections became intermittent: I would see the airport icon in the menu bar indicate full strength, a few seconds later the icon indicates zero (0) strength, and then the indicator shows full strength again. This happens about three to five times per minute, and makes real time tasks, like playing in a raid on a Warcraft server, appear to lag badly for a few seconds up to about three times a minute. My interim solution for this was to drape 50' of cat 5 from the router to my office and wire in. Worked well enough for me to get work done and let Apple take the time to identify and fix the problem.
I did eventually do a clean install of Leopard, but that did not clean up my wireless signal problem.
Here's the interesting news, however. I'm using someone else's wireless facility at this moment. That facility used the same wireless router I've been trying to use with Leopard at my normal office location without success. So, predictably, when I first tried to use the wireless router here, I was seeing the same problem. Then a couple hours later, that router's transmitter appears to have died, because nobody here was able to see it on the Airport list.
We replaced the dead router with a new one of the same make and model (different revision), but with a different third-party firmware package.
I now have a rock solid wireless connection. It no longer drops signal strength to zero three times per minute.
This leads me to conclude that while there is still a problem with code in Leopard that makes it not work with some wireless routers that worked fine with Tiger, it is entirely possible to work around the problem by installing a different 50 dollar wireless router. Take your machines and try (with permission!) to use different wireless connections to see if any work.
I notice that AP Grapher indicates another wireless access point using the same channel as the AP I'm attempting to use, and the app also shows my transmit rate dropping to zero periodically. Nevertheless, the wireless appears to work now. I'll be changing my own wireless access point shortly.

    Hello,
The mail notification uses the mail address informed in the BP master data. To change it, open transaction BP and type the mail address (external, not the internal one, if your company has this feature) in the field "E-Mail", in frame "Communication" (pay attention here, because there is another frame called "Address-Independent Communication" with an e-mail field too, that doesn't need to be filled for this purpose), in tab "Address", for the "Business Partner" BP role.
If mails are been sent without any e-mail address in this field, you may check the e-mail address in the user data, under transaction SU01 (usually Solution Manager doesn't use this information to send e-mail, but your configuration may be changed).
See if this solves the problem and, if not, check the action you are using to send mail and look at the method called by the action. Maybe someone edited the ABAP code to take the information from another source (or even hard-coded it).
    Best Regards,
    C Canzone

  • E3000 - Password

Just replaced a dead router with the E3000.  I am trying to install the Cisco Connect but I cannot get by the password.  Where do I find the password or how do I work around this problem?

Are you referring to the password when accessing the router or setting up a password for wireless connection?
By default, username is "blank" and password is admin.

  • New firmware for 350N?

I check once in a while and the other day I saw that there was a new firmware listed for the 350N.  1.04.3 I believe.  I downloaded it, but did not get around to installing it until tonight.  Just on a whim, I checked again before proceeding, and saw that the old one was listed again.  I know I am not imagining things, since I have the file.  I can only conclude that they pulled it back.  Was there problems?  It would not be unprecedented.
Either way, I am not installing it until I see it offered again!

I may have been the culprit in getting the new firmware removed. I tried to install the new firmware via a wirelessly connected Mac. The upgrade failed, and left my router in a dead state (flashing power light, not initting the http server.) I tried to update the firmware manually via tftp, but forgot to set binary mode. My interactions with support were prompt and courteous, but not mac friendly.
Net result was that when I discovered my blunder (after hanging up with support), I was able to tftp both the old and the new firmware into the router using a wired connection. I currently have the new 1.04.3 firmware installed and it has solved a ton of intermittent outage issues for me. 802.11n was useless in my neighborhood until this update, so I can't say enough about it. If you don't have the currently offered firmware, you might want to dl it, but as soon as linksys re-posts 1.04.3, I would rec trying it.
If any Linksys techs are monitoring..... I know that Mac's aren't well supported throught your tech support proceses, but here is the correct way to bring back a router from the dead using Mac OS 10.x
---- new tech procedure for support of any tftp update to router firmware using a Mac OS X box ----
    - first, note the tftp is installed on all 10.3 and greater OS's (may be earlier, but am not certain), so all of your apple customers should be able to complete this procedure.
    - second, note that the wireless connection to a dead router is obviously not available, but this might not make sense to a Mac user who expects everythign to just "work".
-third, note that this presumes the existence of a viable firmware version on the users machine. Have the user move it to their home directory or someplace where they know where it is. Procedure (version 0.a)
1 - connect via ethernet cable to the router
2 - open the system prefs, go to network and set up a manual IP of 192.168.1.105 (or something)
3 - open the terminal.app located in the /Applications/Utilities folder, and perform the following:
4 - change directory to the location of the firmware you want to install. if it has been moved to the home directory, this step isn't needed.
5 - type the command ls this should show the contents of the directory and verify that the needed firmware is present. note the name of the file.
6- type the command: tftp 192.168.1.1 this should connect you to the router
7 - type the command binary this should set the transfer mode to binary, the correct way to upload firmware
8 - type the command put this will upload the firmware. a message indicating successful transfer is all that is needed.
9 - reset the router by unplugging and plugging. the new software should boot.
please double check my process, but this worked for a couple of installed and reversions. for my 350N t

  • HELP WRT54G V4

    Hi,
I have a WRT54G V4 wireless router and i just upgraded my firmware today( the latest one)..but then after it's done..the router menus screwed up..
    can be seen here: http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/7452/helpah6.jpg
can someone help me on this? I'm not really familiar with router things. any details how to solve it would be appreciated.
    Thanksss

If you cannot connect at 192.168.1.1 then maybe this is not your router's address.  Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt
This will open a black DOS box.
Type in "ipconfig"  (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key.
What is the "Default Gateway" address ?  Is it 192.168.1.1  or something else?
Point your browser to the "Default Gateway" address, and try again to log in and display the router setup pages.   If you are still having problems, go to step 1 of the procedure below.
You must be able to ping your router to use the tftp.exe program.   The procedure below also shows how and when to use the tftp.exe program.   If you are still having problems with your router, then try the procedure below.  If you still cannot ping your router by step 9, then your router is dead.
Here is the procedure to use to try to recover a "nearly dead" router:
First start by trying to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.

I recently replaced my dead airport router with a Netgear91-5g router and synced it successfully to my Lexmark Pro 915 printer and my computer; yet when I try to print wirelessly I get the message: "printer not connected; printer offline". Lexmark support verified that my printer was connected to the new router and the problem was with the computer's printer configuration and they could reconfigure it online if I paid for their "Premium Support" services ($119 for one year, 3 fixes). I declined, feeling sure that this is something I could do if I knew how. Could it be an incompatability issue with OS 10.8.3?

You saved me $$$ that I can ill afford on my fixed income. I was very unhappy with the "support" from Lexmark... what a rip off!  Thank you dwb!

  • Is router entirely dead? (BEFW11S)

    Hello everyone!
My router stoped to work without any reason.
Now computer isn't "see" it and on the router illuminates Power, Link, Diag, Link/Act(3), Full/Coll(2,3) and 100(2) lights (not blinking).
Can anybody answer is router dead entirely or may be there is a way to make it alive?
    WBR, Alex

    1)  Reset the router for 30-40 seconds ..... after resetuplug the power for 10 seconds ...plug back the power & see if DIAG light is still  on
    2)  If so use static Ip in Local Area Connection .... see igf you are able to ping 192.168.1.1 ....if so acccess routers set up page & try to upgrade the firmware ........
Ifboth the settings don't work ....... may be the router is gone bad.........

  • Router dead?

I can't get an internet connection with my D-Link DI-604 but the connection is fine if I hook up directly to my cable modem. I tried unplugging the D-Link for five minutes and plugging it back in and pressing the reset button for ten seconds with the power connected. Neither helped. Is my router dead? If it is dead can someone recommend a reliable wired router?

I got the silly thing to work by unplugging it for an hour and following the initial setup instructions to turn off the cable modem and powering up the router first. I tried that identical thing last night but only left the router off for five minutes with no success.
