Dead Safari?
My Safari app. is dead.
Once I launch it it freezes witht the round colourfull thing going round and round ad round. The only way out is force quit. I re-installed the Application but the problem persist. I am not running any enhancers/hacks. Any help?
Hi
There may be an incompatible 3rd party plug-in creating the hang (usually, the hang is due to cache corruption errors).
Anything installed in these locations:
Either the HD>Library, or your User Account>Library: InputManagers folder or Applications Support>SIMBL>Plug-ins folder

Suddenly Safari can't launch. (I'm using Firefox now) What can I do to make Safari responsive again?
I've had the same problems - inexplicable dead Safari and reinstalling didn't help.
After following this advice I also went into Library/Safari and deleted the 'history.plist' and the 'lastsession.plist' files.
And all is well.
Hope this helps.
(As for losing bookmarks, mine are all backed up using the apple 'Backup' program. Even better is using del.icio.us or another social bookmarking website. Much better over the long term.) -
Safari hangs since 10.4.9
I have had regular issues with Safari hanging since 10.4.9. Prior to the update I never had any issues. The symptom is that Safari hangs while opening a web page. It even hangs opening the Apple.Com site occasionally! The Url box is partially updated, but the page never loads. Safari gets the spinning rainbow wheel, and is locked up. Using Force Quit does not end the dead Safari. Sometimes opening a terminal window allows me to kill the Safari process. But often it is impossible to kill it, and the system cannot shutdown either. I have to hold the power button and force a hard restart. Again, this started to happen they day after I installed 10.4.9. I am somewhat dismayed that a single application can force a hard reset to be required. Reminds me a lot of another OS from the Pac North West!
Note that while Safari is locked up, other applications such as Itunes work fine.
Intel Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.9)
Intel Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.9)I downloaded Firefox as am experiment. I restarted the Mac. I opened both browsers and opened apple.com and then let the machine sleep for 36 hours. When I woke it, I pressed the refresh button in both Safari and Firefox. Safari progress bar went to 90% loaded, with no rendering of the web page when the spinning rainbow came and it was locked up. Firefox instantly loaded the web page.
On my other MAC i did the same experiment. This time upon waking the machine, I let Firefox refresh first. The result was the same. Firefox worked perfectly, Safari totally locked up.
For me this is conclusive evidence of a major bug in Safari.
And for me it started with 10.4.9. Both MACs worked flawlessly until that software update was unleashed.
Tonight I learned that QA engineers in Apple are diverted to work on iPhone instead of OSX! What about existing customers? When will this be fixed Mr. Jobs?

Is there a way to boost Safari? I'm using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.7 which has become very slow, almost dead. Many thanks!
If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
and here:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/01/26/apple_revamps_its_public_website_u sing_html5.html
For Snow Leopard/Lion users this should also be read:

Dead Spot-Top of the Screen (With: Maps - Stocks - Clock - Safari - iPod)
Dead Spot-Top of the Screen
I see some problems with the bottom of the screen but here the problem is with the top of the screen.
I can't use some part of this Applications, I don't know why, I already reset and restore the iPhone some times, and there is no change.
Maps - I can't type any direction on the search field.
Stocks - I can't select the first stock on the list.
Clock - World Clock - Edit - I can't select the Done button.
Safari - When the Phone is horizontal I can't select the Add Bookmark or the Back button.
iPod - When the Phone is horizontal I can't select the play button.
Please let me know how can I fixed or how can I change my iPhone, I'm working in McAllen Texas and the only Apple Store near to here is the one that is in San Antonio, so its like 3 hours driving, what can I do?If they try and make u pay for a loaner phone, be insistant that they give u one free of charge! I had to send mine in for repairs, but talked them out of the $30 loaner phone fee..only makes sense that we shouldn't have to pay! cheers

"Blocked plug-in message" problem on my OS X 10.6.8 (Safari's 5.1.10). Any solutions for a non-techie (step 3 on Adobe Flash's instructions leads to dead end, i.e. product for sale). Thank you.
Prior to updating flash player, you must first uninstall all previous versions. Make sure you are downloading from the proper Adobe website = Adobe Flash Player Software
Flash Player Uninstaller
Repair permissions and restart your computer after the installations. -
Dead Google Search Links in Safari
After making a Google search, I hit the 'back' button, only to find all of the links on the page frozen. This happens ALL the time in my Safari Google searches. Is anybody experiencing a similar issue?
For example:
1) I search "Martin Luther King" in Google (typing into the Google search box in the Safari toolbar).
2) Google shows the search results.
3) I click on an item to read it.
4) After reading the article, I hit the 'back' button to return to my search.
5) None of the search results are clickable. They're all dead. Not a single link on the page works. (Control-click does nothing, either)
This happens on a daily basis, with nearly all of my Google searches.
I have done many re-sets of Safari caches, etc. This incredibly frustrating problem continues. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the errant extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. Its settings will revert to their defaults. If the extension still causes a problem, remove it permanently or refer to its developer for support. -
Download items from Safari's Activity window DEAD OS X.7 Lion
Downloading items from Safari's (5.1) Activity window DEAD- Mac OS X.7 Lion
Aargghhh this was brilliant before for grabbing stuff and not working now,
all i get is a massive amount of text showing up and no download anymore.
Yup you can download an earlier version (5.0.6) but Lion will not swallow it
tried pacifist to open the old package but even that fails.
thought i could find it inside and run it.
so....
what now?
is there a way round this?
a third party plug in!
something?
anyone got any idea how to sort this out?
so i can grab filmclips pictures etc...
just like before.I thought I was the only person who was grieving the loss of this feature. I used it mostly for downloading PDFs as preview handles them so much better than shoddy propriety viewers, or even the "preview in safari" mode. During my degree it was invaluable to me as it also let me save these files into folders and keep them for referencing later.
To further exlpain; it was one of the features which set Safari out from the rest. The activity window shows all the different elements of the website which are either being loaded or which have been downloaded. It will show elements of javascript, images, music, PDFs etc embedded in the page including videos and the like.
Within that activity window, you can also see (and copy!) the DIRECT LINK address of each element of the page. ie: Where the actual media files are being hosted, downloaded or streamed from. Certain sites disable this feature for protected works, as they are entitled to do so, but the vast majority allow it.
When we had a separate downloads window, instead of this overlay box in the Lion safari, it enabled the end user to copy the DIRECT LINK in the activity window using Ctrl + C and do the following:
1) Either paste it into the address bar to watch/ listen to the media free from the other elements of the page which waste memory/ get in the way
2) Paste it into the "Downloads" window (Using Ctrl + V) which would instantly start downloading the file, as if you had clicked a "Download file ABC Now" link on a web page.
With the loss of the download window, only option 1 is available. This means that only images and certain formats of video/ audio will be viewable off the website in question ie: ones that quicktime can play. And the current version of quicktime embedded within safari doesn't give you the option to "Download a copy" or "Save as" like older versions used to.
This may necessitate a revisiting of Firefox, which has a "Media browser" function.
I wonder if there is perhaps a bookmarklet out there which forces a download of whatever is dragged onto it. Any ideas? -
Safari 5.1 Snow Leopard, dead windows
Safari 5.1 in Snow Leopard, some buggy behaviour:
1. Click on dock icon: no new window appears
File->New Window: now you get window, a dead, blank white one
Re-start Safari: now you get an active window, which is nice until:
2. Sometimes when you finally get to a web site, all the links within are inactive, and of course the Bug reporter is dead. The window is just dead, dead, dead. Re-start Safari and somtimes it will behave for awhile.
3. Cannot activate Private browsing
4. Often will not work with Password Wallet; going to a website from within the application yields a cold, white dead window, though with the correct url in the address bar.I have this problem too.
SL 10.6.8
First window seems to work fine.
New window doesn't display new one unless you then choose from window list.
New windows are "dead" - do not respond to any GUI action, butncan close window with keyboard.
All Safari extensions turned off.
Another reason to move to Firefox or Chrome :-(
Anyone have a solution?
Thanks,
Ashley. -

Dead links when using Safari.
I first noticed dead links when trying to read "the Week in iOS Apps," on Macworld. I could go to the second view, but never past the second view. I solved the problem by switching to Firefox. the same thing happened on the Verizon wireless site when I tried to pay my bill.
Should i make Firefox my primary browser? I have a habit of using Safari. Dead links shouldn't be a problem. You can try this. May help.
Reset Safari.
Click Safari in the menu bar.
From the drop down select "Reset Safari".
Uncheck the boxes beside all items.
Just check the box beside “Remove all website data”.
Click "Reset".
Empty Caches
Safari > Preference > Advanced
Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
Turn off Extensions if any, and launch Safari.
Safari > Preferences > Extensions -
Enter this url in any modern browser IE9 (I never would have believed that I would be complaining about Firfox not working and IE does! - it that how far you've gone down?), Chrome (no wonder people are switching to it in droves) and even Safari - and it plays, but not in Firefox v6.02 - it used to play fine when I first uploaded it back in July 2010 (v3.6 Firefox I think)

Try this link in Firefox v6 and then try it in Chrome - nuf said.
Hope you can fix this or I'll be having a big disclaimer on all of my site - does not work in Firefox. Never thought I would be saying this.
Thanks. Craig.I should test it on my wife's old Xp with v3.6 - too late tonight - will check tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Craig.

I found two answers to the Safari going dead on me after a Security Update
I don't know if this helps but I will try not to make this too long.
I was confronted with a Mac Software Update out of the blue and didn't expect it, so I complied and let it do its thing. It took about 30 minutes but everything seemed to work ok but I didn't test SAFARI until about four days later when I found it wouldn't kick start. It just stubbornly jumped up and down like a drunken bean in the Dock!
Luckily I have Firefox as a backup but I like Safari mainly for the private browsing it does. Well nothing worked and I tried moving it out of the Dock and back to the Applications folder. Still no good.
After a while I began to lose patience with it, because I tried to re install it from the MacBook Leopard disk and I can never find my way around that thing.
It wrong-foots me every time, but this time it told me I couldn't install bundled software on the Macintosh Hard Drive. This riled me as I couldn't think of where else it might want it put. I put this down as probably due to Apple's obsession with not crediting end users with the ability to know what files are called, or what extensions they have, or indeed where they are placed when operating.
Sorry I'm ranting now. Well once I'd lost my rag with it I threw all the Safari files into the waste basket and then went and Downloaded (using my more trustworthy Firefox!) the Safari Update installation called Safari311UpdLeo.dmg and I installed that.
Suddenly you could knock me down with a feather, because it ran perfectly. And I must have kept the files on the system that stored my history and bookmarks for Safari as they're all still there.
So that looks like the best solution to this. Dump the main program file of safari in the waste basket and all shortcuts, oops sorry Aliases into the Waste Basket, sorry again Trash! Then fetch the proper Safari 311UpdLeo.dmg from Mac Downloads site and install it and off she goes, running like a smooth engine.
I hope that works for you. I did make sure the download was the version for the Macbook Leopard 13 laptop.
All is well. At least all is well until the next Software/Security Update when I will come and see how many more people have been caught out. This is all like those Firmware Upgrades that stop your TV working !

I have a page with 2 nav links originating from 2 different images. 1 image / link works well with Firefox, Chrome and Safari. The other image / link works well with firefox, only half of the image is active in Chrome and none of the image is active in safari. The documents links checkout fine. I have replaced the image, the container as well as relinked. The result is the same. Can someone help please? Here is a link to my site (in progress) PikiPiks: film reviews Only the first 2 images in the left column are currently linked. The first image / link for "Kiki's Delivery Service" is the problematic one. Thanks! MacOS 10.9 / Dreamweaver CS6

I won't even talk about the liberal usage of absolute positioning -- none of which is needed. You'll soon learn that this is not the way to build web pages when this comes back to bite you in the butt. It almost looks like this layout was created in another program. Was it?
#1 On the web file names cannot contain special characters like apostrophes. <a href="Kiki'sDeliveryService.html"> is not a valid file name. You need to rename without the apostrophe.
#2 This link is pointing to a file on your local hard drive which nobody except you can see.
<a href="file:///CARBUNKLE/Users/jev/Sites/WowAbout/index.html"> That path should be pointing to your site.

I have just downloaded and installed OS 10.4.11 “upgrade“ and with it Safari 3.0.4. Safari just doesn’t work! I can’t even open the bookmarks page. It doesn‘t appear to make an internet connection. I have repaired permissions but that hasn’t helped.
Fortunately, I can use Firefox in the meantime.
Any suggestions?I installed the 10.4.11 update last night and now Safari crashes everytime I launch. I cannot get into the program at all. I have tried deleting the files above, reinstalling the patch, and created a new user account with no fix. Here is my crash log:
